tailgateTALKBy Jack Chastain, Editor

October is by far one of our busiest months of the year. We have

most of our fall sales this month and remain optimistic that our sales will be strong in spite of the weather and reduced cow numbers. Results from our “Cattle for sale” listings have been exceptionally successful as reported by those participating. Other members have reported excellent private treaty sales all summer. Hereford demand is

great and we have had a steady number of calls wanting both bulls and heifers, both horned and polled. I encourage all members to take advantage of our “For Sale” listing. I encourage any non member to join and utilize this most helpful marketing tool. Our goal is to make our magazine and website the first place buyers look when wanting to purchase Hereford cattle.

Our second annual fall classic bull

sale is fast approaching on October 24. I compliment the consignors for offering a quality set of bulls. I encourage everyone to attend and support this event.

The annual membership meeting and election of directors of the American Hereford Association is also held in November in Kansas City during the American Royal Show. Although the terms of the merger of the AHA and APHA do not allow every member a vote, you can still have a voice by contacting the elected delegates from Texas and express your choices. The three men elected this year will serve on the board that makes policies of AHA for the next four years. Make your views and voices heard! I encourage the voting delegates to support the candidates from the southwest region in Jay Wright and Curtis Curry. There are four other candidates that are very qualified to represent the Hereford industry

I wish to remind our junior exhibitors that our THA Foundation will again offer at least $5000 to the exhibitor of the highest placing heifer and $2500 to the second highest placing heifer if funds permit at the Jackson Hereford Ranch National Hereford Show in Fort Worth on February 4, 2013. (Enough funds were contributed in 2011 to pay $5000 and $2500 to the high and second high placing animals at the 2011 show.)The exhibitor must be a TJHA member and both exhibitor and animal must be eligible to show in the junior show in Fort Worth and exhibitor must be at the halter of the animal when shown to be eligible for the award. A few friends of THA have sponsored the funds for this award and have hopes of growing it to the level of the San Antonio scholarship. Any one wishing to contribute to this fund should contact Jack Chastain, Gary Buchholz or Scott Nolan.

I close with a reminder that entries are due now for both the Cowtown Select Sale and 44th annual THA Whiteface Replacement Female Sale. Please help yourself and our sale with a quality offering. A successful sale is a reflection of everyone involved in the Hereford industry. I hope to hear from you or see you at many of the upcoming events. ★

Imagine a place in Texas where the untold stories of our Soldiers,

Veterans will finally be told. A place where the untold stories of the Texas communities that have shared in the development and growth of the world’s largest military installation will be told. A place where children, families, and scholars can go to commemorate the past and celebrate the future. Imagine a place where you can step into the story and become a part of something bigger than yourself.

The place is the National Museum of Mounted Warfare and Soldier Center. The National Mounted Warfare Foundation, a Texas 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is working to make this vision a reality. Planned to open in the fall of 2019, the museum is envisioned as a 100,000 square foot, technologically advanced, interactive and immersive museum that will become the premier

destination activity in the Central Texas region. The museum will be located in the immediate vicinity of Fort Hood, and will be outside the security perimeter of the post to allow for easy access by both military and civilian visitors. In addition to the inside displays, artifacts, simulators, and digital learning stations, the grounds of the museum will feature a vintage military vehicle exploration trail, playgrounds, a memorial park, and plenty of parking for all types of vehicles. Visitors will also enjoy easy access to other memorials and attractions on Fort Hood and in the city of Killeen.

The Foundation has partnered with numerous education institutions to ensure that the museum will provide a worthwhile and meaningful learning experience for our children and families. As the premier destination activity in the region, the National Museum of Mounted

Warfare and Soldier Center will have a significant economic impact on the communities of Central Texas. The museum anticipates 265,000 visitors annually, which will result in an influx of $4.5 million to the local economy. In order to build this world-class museum, the Foundation must raise $95 million between now and 2019. Although the capital campaign only began in March of 2012, the Foundation has already raised over $1.6 million towards this goal.

October 2012 • TEXAS HEREFORD 11

AUSTIN – The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) proposed several changes to the current Texas Bovine Trichomoniasis “Trich” regulations at its September 18 meeting. The proposed amendments to Chapter 38, “Trichomoniasis” reflected suggestions by an industry working group of cattle producers, veterinarians, and other stakeholders which meets annually to review the program and make suggestions for improvement. The Trich program helps protect Texas cattle from a venereal disease caused by protozoa that can cause abortions and infertility, resulting in economic losses for the producer. Diagnosis of the disease is made by laboratory testing of samples collected from bulls by veterinarians. The disease does not affect humans.

Although the rules have not been officially passed yet, the Commission will put in abeyance its existing rules and allow the following changes to take

Despite back-to-back years of drought and escalating costs in the beef industry, the Hereford breed is making a mighty resurgence. Hereford registrations were up more than 8% during the 2012 American Hereford Association (AHA) fiscal year that ended Aug. 31. Registered cow herd inventories are up 3% compared to the previous year — with more than 101,000 females reported this fiscal year.

Hereford breeders continue to experience a dramatic increase in production sale prices while reports of private-treaty sales continue to out-pace the previous year reports.

A total of 182 Hereford production sales were reported by AHA field representatives this fiscal year. Bull sales averaged $4,671, up nearly $700 and females $3,329, up almost $300 per head.

The second largest cattle breed in the U.S., Hereford reports 70,260 registrations and 37,091 transfers with 101,021 cows on inventory. The Association has 3,455 active adult members and 2,263 active junior members.

Hereford semen demand in the commercial industry is also increasing. According to the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB), Hereford semen sales increased 23% over last year. Since 2006 Hereford domestic semen sales has increased 86% a testament to the

TAHC Proposes Changes to Current Texas Cattle Trichomoniasis Regulationseffect immediately. The TAHC will now accept tests run on samples “pooled” at an official lab, for both change of ownership and quarantine release. The veterinarian will still collect samples from individual bulls for submission to the laboratory, and the maximum acceptable pooled ratio will be 5:1. Upon receipt, the lab may combine up to 5 samples together if requested prior to testing. “This change in protocol will result in substantial savings for Texas producers testing their bulls for this economically devastating venereal disease,” stated Dr. Dee Ellis, Texas’ State Veterinarian. Recent studies have confirmed that pooled sampling is acceptable to make the diagnosis while saving the producer considerable money.

A second significant change was also proposed. Diagnostic samples will now be accepted at the laboratory if submitted up to 120 hours (increased from 96 hours) from collection, if specific guidelines are followed by the submitting veterinarian

to ensure the integrity of the sample. This will give veterinarians one more day to submit the samples to the lab, which is helpful to rural veterinarians with long distance shipping concerns.

Proposals were also made to amend Chapter 51 “Entry Requirements”. Out-of-state bulls will also now be allowed to enter Texas using the 5:1 lab-pooled sample method described above. Further, the validity of Trich tests on bulls entering the state will be extended to 60 days from 30 days. These changes are intended as cost savings measures, as well as an attempt to help align Texas entry rules with other states requirements.

For more detailed information concerning the proposed Trich rules, visit www.tahc.state.tx.us or call 1-800-550-8242. Founded in 1893, the Texas Animal Health Commission works to protect the health of all Texas livestock, including: cattle, swine, poultry, sheep, goats, equine animals, and exotic livestock. ★

Beef Industry Resurgence:Hereford Registrations, Cow Herd Inventories, Sale Averages Increase During FY 2012

increasing demand for Hereford genetics in the commercial industry.

Helping with this progress in the commercial industry has been the AHA’s Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR™) program. Now 11 years old, the program has helped the AHA and Hereford breeders build a database that documents the breed’s strengths. More and more Hereford breeders continue to go above status quo and submit ultrasound data, body condition scores, udder scores and cow weights, which all add to the integrity and accuracy of the AHA database.

“Because the AHA Board of Directors placed a resource emphasis on breed improvement and industry research, the Hereford breed now has the single largest database for cow fertility and productivity in the world, and we have documented the inherent economic traits in the breed that can deliver efficiency to the industry at a time when the industry needs it most,” says Craig Huffhines, AHA executive vice president. “More importantly, congratulations to our AHA membership for adopting technology and making the strides in genetic improvement that have positioned Hereford has a breed of choice for commercial producers looking to add heterosis to their Angus-based cow herds.

“Today, the Hereford breed is poised to provide as much value to the commercial

industry as any other breed with its combination advantages of fertility, feed efficiency, good disposition and an end product that will complement a vast array of quality beef programs across the country.”

This fiscal year AHA also released genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs). The AHA genomic approach is the first of its kind to work with the scientific community and the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC) to build its own training and validation population. This approach is important because AHA now has access to all of the genotypes, phenotypes and pedigrees, which will allow the Association and its members to continue to train and build the Hereford-specific panel.

Also noted at the fiscal year’s end are top registrations by state and by breeder. Texas topped the list of registrations per state at 7,156 with Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas and Oklahoma rounding out the top five.

The top five breeders by registration numbers were Rausch Herefords, Hoven, S.D., 840; Upstream Ranch, Taylor, Neb., 646; Alexander Mih, M-M Ranch Polled Herefords, Chanute, Kan., 543; Topp Herefords, Grace City, N.D., 492; and Mrnak Herefords, Bowman, N.D., 431. ★

Advantages of THA Membership

SERVICE – The Texas Hereford Association is a service organization to benefit the Hereford breed and the breeder.

Members are assisted in buying and selling cattle at private treaty and by auction.

The Texas Hereford Association sponsors the Commercial Hereford Heifer Show and Sale and the Texas Select Sale. These sales promote the use of better Hereford bulls and females. The Texas Hereford Association is also actively engaged in the promotion of Texas Herefords and in sponsoring seminars, field days, and other events to encourage educational opportunities for members.

ASSOCIATION – The Texas Hereford Association was organized in 1899. Its membership has included the elite of the Texas Hereford industry since its inception. First year membership dues are $95.00. Dues for active membership after the first year are $95.00 plus a $1.00 per head assessment on calves registered the previous year, less those steered, etc. Associate memberships are available for $75.00 per year. Each member receives an attractive membership certificate.

DIRECTORY ISSUE – Every active member of the Texas Hereford Association has a free listing in the Directory issue of The Texas Hereford. This Directory is used by thousands of Hereford breeders the year round. Information pertaining to your herd such as herd sires, bloodlines, location of farm or ranch, telephone numbers, etc., will be listed in this widely used reference book. This herd listing alone is worth the price of membership. Associate members are also listed.

THE TEXAS HEREFORD – Monthly publication of the Texas Hereford Association. It is the only publication in Texas devoted solely to Herefords. It includes news about the association, news about Herefords, and timely editorial features. Active members can list Herefords for sale FREE in the Herefords For Sale column. This service has been responsible for selling thousands of Texas Herefords all over the nation. Texas Hereford Association members may advertise in The Texas Hereford at low livestock rates – a considerable savings for your marketing program. Sale catalogs, brochures, flyers, and other marketing aids designed and produced by our professional staff at considerable savings. (Advertising rates will be sent on request.)
