Action Summer 2011 1
ChairmanWITH SUMMER UPON US, it is a time to
watch the promise in our foals, as well as
attend the many events throughout Australia held
by the Regional Promotional Groups, and plan
for the coming years. Please support our RPGs
by entering or attending their shows, etc. It takes
a lot of effort and commitment to provide these
to promote the Welsh Breed. These events give
members a chance to catch up and socialise, per-
haps as part of their annual holidays.
Mrs Jan Buttfield, Society President has been
busy travelling including attending the NSW All
Welsh Show and the South Australian All Welsh
Show. Residing in Western Australia does not
make it easy to travel and it is great to see Jan
making the effort to meet members and support
events.
Michael Gates, the current Society Young Am-
bassador has been busy and is committed to
assisting with the Young Judges Competitions
and other events. He has also been raising funds
for the Young People’s Group.
The application form for the Young Ambassador
for 2012-2013 is included in this issue, and is
open to members from 18 – 25 years of age. The
closing date for applications is the 1st February
2012.
The Committee of Management recently ap-
proved a ‘Member’s and Breeder’s Code of
Ethics’ and a copy is included in this issue. I ask
all members to read this document, as a reminder
that all members represent the Society and the
Welsh Breed in their endeavours.
Remember to plan Journal advertisements and
submit any articles for publication. The adver-
tising form is included in this Action.
The Society now has a ‘Facebook’ page. This is
a ‘read only’ facility which is updated regularly
by the office staff, keeping members up to date
with any recent developments and information.
The National Office will be closed from the 22nd
of December and will re-open on the 3rd of Jan-uary 2012. Thank you to the Staff who are adedicated team and I wish them a well deservedbreak. If members have any urgent queries, please contact me.
Thank you to the Regional Promotional Groupsfor their hard work thoughout the year. It ispleasing to see the cooperation between variousGroups, sharing judges and avoiding clashes ofdates of events when planning.
I wish all members a safe and joyous Christmasand Holiday Season, and a Happy and Prosper-ous New Year.
Regards
Michele Baker
From the
I WOULD like to welcome Mrs Joan
McKinlay of Orana Park Stud, Victoria, as
Patron of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of
Australia.
After ‘discovering’ the Welsh breed in the early
1970s when searching for ponies for her three
young children, Joan decided to start breeding
ponies, purchasing mares from Owendale and
Fairway Stud. She was then fortunate to secure
Fairway Hallmark, a Welsh Mountain stallion.
Joan went on to breed Welsh Mountain Ponies,
and then Welsh Ponies and Part Welsh ponies
and from my personal experience, has always
encouraged new members and enthusiasts.
Joan served on the Committee of Management
for 16 years, being particularly interested in the
finances of the Society. Joan was also involved
in the beginning of ‘Action’ including the editing
of it. In the early days of the Victorian Promo-
tions Group, Joan assisted in the organizing of
various Open Days and functions to raise much
needed funds for the Society which assisted in
providing furnishings and office equipment for
the first Society premises at Essendon.
Joan is a Past President, and was awarded an
Honorary Life Membership in 1992.
More recently, Joan has been assisting with the
collecting, collating and editing of the Society
History Publication, planned for release in June
2012. Joan has worked on this task with her
usual enthusiasm and energy and coaxed infor-
mation from many members which may have
otherwise been lost.
Joan continues to breed some ponies and assist
at various events, being a great seller of promo-
tional goods as well as helping where required.
Joan is well worthy of being Society Patron and
on behalf of all members, I wish her well in her
role.
Michele Baker

Dear Editor,
I wish to congratulate John Riley and the clever people who select the
articles for the Journal. The 2011 Journal had such good history arti-
cles, very interesting to those people who have Nattai and Coed Coch
bloodlines in their ponies; interesting ‘Vale’ stories; interesting ad pho-
tos of people’s studs and achievers. The things you learn. How beauti-
ful are our Welshies for the world to see, at home and at the shows.
Thanks,
June Jones Petherton Park Stud
Hi Megan
Have been meaning to contact you for months. You are doing a
great job with Action, always look forward to receiving it.
Just had to say though that I really loved the photo you used under
your editorial in the Winter Edition, with the young boys riding
their ponies in the water. I think it was an exceptional photo and I
just wish that we could see more like it. I would have loved to have
seen it on the cover. There are so many more ponies out there doing
great things than we ever see in the showring, I just wish that we
could make more of the 'ordinary' pony for the 'ordinary' owner. I
know you can't publish the photos if you don't get sent them, but
perhaps when we do get them we could make more of them. That
photo really did my heart good. Good job.
Cheers
Suellen Deane
John Riley received this letter of appreciation from Sue Clasen (see
2011 Journal – page 216)
Dear John,
Thank you so much for the two Journals which arrived this morning.
What a fascinating publication - the photos make me very nostalgic
for Wales and those far-off riding days!
It is good to have so many disparate threads drawn together in print
as it saves my trying to explain it all to our grandchildren... Per-
shore will now have to prepare itself for an invasion of Welsh/Aus-
tralian pony enthusiasts though, won't it ?! Thank you again and our
best wishes to you and the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of Australia,
Sue
PS: Could we have one issue of Action that features old photos of the firstponies that we rode, that led to our Welsh love story. Maybe the geldingissue. Here is my gelding ‘Smokey’ by Nattai Starlight, circa 1950.

12 Action Summer 2011
IT WAS A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY to be able to get behind
the scenes and be involved at the recent New South Wales All
Welsh, both in my role as Young Ambassador and as a judge. After
a last minute judge change, I had the difficult task of judging the
Junior Handler classes and my congratulations are extended to all
the young people that competed - the level of skill and competence
was extremely pleasing to see and even more difficult to judge. The
always popular Fancy Dress was later in the evening and the effort
that parents, family members and children go to for this class is
enormous and it is always enjoyable to be a part of it.
I was very pleased to assist with running of the Young Judges
Competition that was extremely well supported across all age
groups. The competition is aimed at encouraging young enthusiasts
to experience the judging process in a relaxed setting, with the view
of them hopefully becoming judges in the future. I am certain that
the experience I gained from competing in the Young Judges
Competition helped me enormously during my assessment to be
included on the Society’s judging panel and hope that I was able to
pass on some useful tips to the competitors.
As part of the young judges competition, I gave competitors a brief
about how the competition is run and what they can expect during
their interview with the judge. This was a good opportunity to also
assist with communicating the newly approved Committee of
Management (COM) regulations. To assist the participants during
the competition, I also provided a competitor pack that was used to
assist them during the judging of the class and during the interview.
The packs received good feedback and will be further developed
and be available to all competitors competing at the upcoming All
Welsh shows.
During the NSW All Welsh I was also able to speak with several
young members on my plans to form a Young Peoples Group, with
many great ideas being discussed. I plan to use the upcoming All
Welsh shows as another opportunity to finalise these plans to be able
to put to forward a proposal to the COM in early 2012.
The proposed Young Peoples Group will be holding a social event
on Friday evening, 9th March 2012 in conjunction with the Welsh
National Show. There will be several short DVD screenings
including the 1992 Imported Stallion Parade, footage from the Royal
Welsh and hopefully the prestigious Horse of the Year Show in the
UK. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to come together
in a relaxed and friendly environment to see some of the ponies and
cobs that have had a tremendous influence on our breed. Light
refreshments and soft drinks will be provided and everyone is
encouraged to come along. If anyone would like to assist or has any
other ideas about this evening, I would love to hear from you.
To assist with fundraising for the proposed group, I will be raffling
a copy of Tom Best’s book The History of the British Riding Pony.
Tom is co-founder of the renowned Waxwing Stud in Scotland UK. The book
records the history of the British Riding Pony from the 19th Century to the present
day and describes how the expertise of influential breeders combined the best
bloodlines from the Welsh, Thoroughbred and Arab to create today’s modern
Riding Pony. The History of the British Riding Pony is the definitive account
of the subject and worthy of a place on any equestrian bookshelf.
The raffle will be drawn on the 15th December 2011 with tickets on sale for $5
each or three for $10 and will be available from the South Australian, Western
Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian All Welsh shows, the National Capital
Horse Show and the Southern NSW Pony Classic and Youngstock Show.
Alternatively, if you would like a chance to win a copy of this great book, please
get in contact with me to arrange tickets.
I am looking forward to finishing off the year attending the remaining All Welsh
Shows and getting further involved with these shows.

QUALIFICATIONThe Achiever Award is a prestigious award in recognition of out-
standing performance by a Welsh Pony, considering the versa-tility demonstrated in their general promotion of the Welsh breedin OPEN COMPANY (led, saddle, harness etc).
NOTEAlthough general agricultural show results will be considered, greater preference would be given to an exhibit that, for exam-ple:- won at Barastoc, represented their state at an Australiawide competition of significant importance, excelled at andgained recognition for its contribution to the RDA etc.
Achiever Award - Do you own or know of a super Welsh Pony or Cob? if so, let us know!
THIS TROPHY was created in memory of
the late Lady Dinah Creswick of the fa-
mous Nattai Stud. The winner receives a beau-
tiful plate especially made for this trophy.
It was a huge honour to be awarded the presti-
gious Dinah Creswick Breeders Trophy at the
2011 Society AGM. Having come second
every year since it began as a National Award
in 2005 until it became a state by state award in
2009, was an incredible feat in itself.
It was South Australia’s turn to host the trophy
at the 2010 SA All Welsh Show and we pro-
duced 16 ponies for the show and the seven
Welsh Mountain ponies all trace back to a Nat-
tai pony.
We are very proud to have won the trophy as
Lady C, as she was known was a very dear
friend. The family had visited and stayed at
her famous Nattai Stud many times over the
years. Ponies bought included the impeccably
bred stallions Nattai Vychan dec.(Coed CochBari Imp UK x Nattai Moon Fairy) and NattaiHarri II (Coed Coch Bari Imp UK x Nattai
Lady Moonlight 2nd). While Harri II was the
show stallion (winning Supreme Welsh Moun-
tain Pony at every outing) it was Vychan who
produced the top show ponies and continues to
have such a huge influence in the stud through
his many descendants.

20 Action Summer 2011
RPG RoundupNEW SOUTH WALES - Eastern
THE NSW ALL WELSH is over for another
year! This year we found ourselves with
record entries particularly in the Part Welsh
classes and with some Welsh classes having in
excess of 20 entries.
No show of this size can occur without the as-
sistance of non-committee members, a commit-
tee of six cannot possibly cope with the demands
of the weekend. The committee members would
like to thank those non-committee people who
have worked so hard to assist in the smooth run-
ning of the Welsh Show. Peter Taubman does
the most fabulous job as judges’ host from the
time he meets them at the airport, taking them
home to look after them and then bringing them
to the show and taking care of them until the
show is finished.
The show could not run without our wonderful
stable and camping coordinator Jeff Perry and
his assistant Mick Rath. Jeff comes to SIEC on
Wednesday and works tirelessly all day and
much of the night looking after members’ needs
in that area. Jane Newton refuses to be on com-
mittee but may as well be as she spends weeks
organising the show making sure everything is
catered for from ordering of ribbons to finding
presents for judges. I don’t know what we
would do without Fred and Mary Riley who
come to help set up rings before the show starts
on Thursday and then continue to work through-
out the weekend, you will generally find Fred at
the rings making sure that classes commence on
time and Mary assisting competitors with ques-
tions in the official tent. If you ever wonder who
those wonderful voices are that warmly welcome
us each day as well as keeping us entertained and
up to date with classes are they are Sue Clarke
and Greg Allchin. We would like to thank them
for giving up their time announcing for us.
We would also like to thank the families of the
committee members. They endure a long suffer-
ing year of spending many nights and weekends
at home alone while their family member is off
either at committee meetings or setting up for the
shows. They also often have to assist in looking
after the ponies at these shows whilst the prepa-
ration and clean up happens. It’s hard to imagine
what work does go into a preparation of a show,
especially a show which is one of the biggest in
the state. Committee members spend endless
days and nights organising every aspect of the
show to ensure that it runs as smoothly as possi-
ble and this could not be achieved without
backup from home and friends.
We are very lucky to have some wonderful spon-
sors who generously donate towards the show.
They are listed in the catalogue and many have
links to their business on www.welshnsw.home-
stead.com ; and we would ask that you support
those studs and businesses that support the show
as without them it would not be the success it is.
The committee would also like to thank our
wonderful stewards and marshalls, we really do
appreciate the time and effort you put into mak-
ing the show a success and Luke Stuart-Smith
who is always happy to help pack up and shift
things around for us. We have to give special
thanks to Sandy Anderson of Bryndefaid Stud in
Scotland and Kate Treneman who came to our
rescue at very short notice when the advertised
judge, Sandy Goodwin was suddenly unable to
come. For those who were not aware, the com-
mittee had to locate these judges only two weeks
before the show. There were two other people
who jumped in at even shorter notice when sud-
denly we found ourselves needing a saddle judge
for the ridden welsh and we sincerely thank Sue
Ch de Crespigny and Mark Bullen for delaying
their trip home and helping us out.
We were honoured to have the Society Patron,
Joan McKinlay, and the Society President, Jan
Buttfield, at our show this year. We really ap-
preciated these ladies making the trip to attend.
The 2011 All Welsh results will be available on
the Society website shortly. Please keep an eye
on www.welshnsw.homestead.com and photos
can be found on the websites of Lorelle Mercer
www.lorellemercer.com.au and Suz Worsley-
Deacon www.swdimages.com.au . Please sup-
port these ladies who spent three days in 30
degree heat taking photos for you. Theirs is a
hard job taking literally thousands of photos to
sell relatively few. Many photographers are no
longer coming to horse shows, if you would like
this service to remain then you need to be pre-
pared to support them.
The NSW All Breeds Youngstock and New-
comer (any age) Show will be held at Hawkes-
bury Showground on the 4th December 2011.
The program is on the Welsh Information site.
The show is enter on the day so come along and
support your RPG. Medals are on offer for
Supreme Welsh In Hand and Supreme Part
Welsh exhibits and our judge for
2011 is Geoff Trim from
Kingswood Stud in Queensland.
If you or anyone you know would
like to sponsor a class or breed at
the show, please contact our fan-
tastic Sponsorship Coordinator
Maryanne Smith on www.yarra-
heights.com.au . We are always
looking for people to sponsor the
shows so we can provide our com-
petitors with fantastic prizes. We
are also regularly looking for
items to raffle; the proceeds of the
raffles generally go to activities
throughout the year like the Infor-
mation Workshop day.
By the time this Action goes to
print we should have already
placed our Sydney Royal entries. The closing
date this year was a little earlier than previous
years so I hope that none of our members missed
out. We need to support the Welsh classes so
that we can continue to have them. The RAS
Horse committee have approved some changes
to the Welsh Program notably that there is no
longer a height restriction for Welsh geldings
competing in their led classes.
For those who know him, Cliff Brown has re-
cently been very ill. Cliff and Marge would like
to thank all the people who have contacted them
to wish him well and Meg Foster for all her help
and support throughout this difficult period. It
was wonderful to see Marge at the NSW All
Welsh, Marge has been a fabulous supporter of
the Society for more years than most would care
to remember.
Jess Kerry has had her neck fused after being
crushed by a horse last May. At this stage she is
still frustratingly sitting on the sidelines watch-
ing her mum show her cobs however she is
slowly on the mend and hopes that next year she
will be able to assist again. To make matters
worse, on the Sunday night of the All Welsh she
was involved in a serious car accident with her
cousin and now is waiting to hear if she has a
fractured sternum. Jess and her mum Sharon
would also like to thank all the people who have
contacted them to wish her well for recovery.
Helen Dohan of Woranora Stud has had her first
foal for the season by Ysselvliets Golden Boy(Imp NL) who she imported last year. WoranoraPortia has had a superb palomino colt with lots
of bling. This is the first foal of many for the
Woranora stud so keep an eye out for ‘Goldie’s’progeny.

OUR ANNUAL WELSH SHOW will be
held in late November and we are planning
our Youngstock Show, this year it is moving to
February, details are in this edition of Action.
Belgarra Ponies beautiful girl Oak Park Georgiapurchased from Hanley Park in QLD has had her
foal at the end of August by Owendale MasterBlack (by Owendale Black Forest), a very
cheeky and cute dark brown/ liver chestnut colt
but his colour is changing I'm hoping dark liver
or steel grey, he’s Welsh B. Bellgarra Annabelle(Bamborough Paramount x Indi Grace) has
now found a new home and a new best friend a
young girl in Wollongong area. Another Part
Welsh colt three weeks later (Brampton Princeof Thieves x Indi Grace) - he’s an absolute beau-
tiful palomino colt, he will be gelded and as his
dad is so quiet should make a great little ridden
pony. Buena Vista Alyce is due to BramptonPrince of Thieves and Mirinda Keepsake is due
to Bellgarra Indi Joe.
We are looking forward to Northern NSW Welsh
Show in Tamworth in November and hope that
everyone has a great time and it’s not a hot
weekend. Please be on the lookout for those hor-
rid slithery things that come with the heat - we
have seen a lot more this year already.
NEW SOUTH WALES - Southern

Chris and Janet Murphy from the Keyi Welsh

fillies and three colts) they have bred by WestonPark Congo and Pontsteffan Simwnt (Imp UK)this year. They are particularly pleased with the
two chestnut colts by Pontsteffan Symwnt. One
of the colts (a full brother to Keyi Chasca the
yearling filly who has been shown very success-
fully by Daniel Harvey) has already been sold to
a great show home in Bungendore.

OUR ANNUAL PERFORMANCE Show
was held in late August at the Oxley Re-

have asked for a better day. The number of ex-
hibits in some events was outstanding, I think we
must mention we had six stallions in the Welsh
Hunter Stallion class, it was lovely to see so
much quality competing. This is a great day out
and always a nice start of the show season, so
mark it in your diaries now for next year!
By the time this is out we will have run our

of Vanoca Park Ivory by Dangangle Griffin. We

none of that happened all we got up to at 8.00am
on the 19th October 2011 and there was a foal in
the paddock. We are looking forward to show-

ISTART MY REPORT with the sad news thatDavid Verner from Akeringa Stud passed
away in August. David and his wife Judith hadbred Welsh and APSB ponies for over 40 yearsand were both very active in the SA Branch ofthe APSB. Our thoughts are with Judith andtheir family.
It has been a busy start to the show season thisyear beginning in August with our Annual Per-formance Day. This year’s competition includedthe very first Native Pony Competition for SA.Gary LeBroq from Torlyn Stud and MeganHowe from Nawarrah Park Stud flew over fromVictoria to judge the Native Pony and WorkingHunter classes, local Kerry Glass judged theDressage and well known SA Equestrienne JaneBush and fellow local Elizabeth Chibnall judgedthe Showmanship classes. With 28 classes onoffer, there were more than 40 competitors whoenjoyed the perfect weather. Dressage classeswere at capacity again this year with five testson offer, Walk Trot, Preliminary and Novice, keeping judge Kerry Glass very busy.
Whilst the dressage was being held on one oval, the Working Hunter was in full swing in thejumping arena, with competitors of all levelscatered for. Encourage classes were again verypopular with both children and adults able tohave a go over a small jumping course judgedby Gary LeBroq. Gary designed a great jumpingcourse, with only the hay bales proving difficultfor some competitors with most ponies stoppingto eat! Once they had finished their jumpingrounds, competitors moved to the flatwork arenato be judged by Megan Howe.
At the completion of the event, five awards weremade to the ‘Best Performed’ Welsh, Part Welsh,APSB, Conemarra and Open Exhibits. Best Per-formed Welsh was a draw between DalbraeHetty ridden by Jessica Ellard and Akeringa Al-legro ridden by Troy Woollard and Best Per-formed Part Welsh was awarded to KerulenFelspar, ridden by Brianna Peters. Congratula-tions to all competitors. We will be holding thisfantastic event again in August 2012. Full re-sults are on the South Australian RPG Web sitewww.wpcs.com.au/sa and photos can be viewedat www.kerriaffordphotography.com

Thispromises to be a big event with several celebra-tory activities planned. We are delighted that ournew WPCS Patron Joan McKinlay and cur-rent Young Ambassador Michael Gates will
be joining us.

away from her mother trying to suckle a tree.Thankfully mother and daughter have recoveredfrom the ordeal… not sure Barry and Marlenehave though. RPG RoundupTASMANIA
FIRSTLY THE TASMANIAN RPG would
like to thank our guest presenters Gary Le
Brocq, Helen Dohan and Matt Patterson for their
informative presentations during the Equine En-
thusiast and Social Day held on September 4th.
It was great day and good to see members of the
Equine Community attending to support our
group.
The Tasmanian RPG is now busy organising the
2011 Tasmanian All Welsh Show to be held at
the Campbell Town Showground on December
11th. The Tas All Welsh Schedules are available
online www.wpcs.com.au. This year we wel-
come two International Judges: Catryn Bigley
(UK) and Lesley Hillard (UK). Entries close on
December 1st.
Some news from Tasmanian Studs:
NORTHERN WINDS STUD: Our season got
off to a heartbreaking start with the loss of our
beautiful Part Welsh mare Kerrilea Ella Bache.Home Vale Impresario, current Supreme Part
Welsh from the Tasmanian All Welsh has been
retired to stud after an extremely successful
show career. She had her last saddle outing at
Launceston Royal where she won Reserve
Champion Hunter Pony qualifying her for the
Grand Nationals once again and she will be
going in foal to Myscal Encore later this year.
We are now looking forward to getting the
young ponies out – Northern Winds Ever So Fairand Llangollen Lapdance have both been broken
in and will be shown as newcomers and we are
also preparing the lovely Welsh A filly CreswellPrada for Brooklyn Lodge.
MIDSOMER STUD: We are pleased to have
purchased the Welsh B Stallion Lyric LodgeDakota from Margaret van De Weg at Lyric
Lodge. He has settled into his new home and
routine like an old hand enjoying the pampering
and preparation of being stabled and groomed.
We are aiming to breed Galloways and Part
Welsh ponies for the show ring and performance.
We have hand served our well performed 15hh
thoroughbred mare Midsomer Maiden to Dakotaand with both gorgeous looks and more impor-
tantly unflappable temperament we are excited
about this baby in the making, as well as Willow-croft Silhouette. Dakota has really amazed me
with his temperament, after only paddock serv-
ing, he was a little surprised at us hand serving,
he had a look on his face as if to say, "Really you
are all going to be part of this??" which made us
laugh and then got the job done. Although he
has been paddocked here on his own, his best
friends are two pugs, the rooster and our
Maremma dog, who he adores. We hope every-
one is enjoying this glorious weather and wish
everyone endless joy with their fabulous Welsh
ponies this season.
Sally Larkin-Taylor and Ron Taylor of SAL-
RON PARK have had a great start to the 2011
show season! Although the ponies Salron ParkMiss Pink and Tooravale Madonna still have
some coat to lose, both fillies have come away
from the two shows entered with excellent re-
sults! Miss Pink was Supreme Welsh at Burnie
Agricultural Show, Best Youngstock Native
Pony and Supreme APSB exhibit at the Cham-
pion of Champions show at Campbelltown, and
the yearling filly Tooravale Madonna was
Champion B, and Champion Palomino at Burnie
(her first ever show!) and Supreme B Native
Pony, Supreme B, Reserve Champion Palomino
and Runner Up Best in Hand at Champion of
Champions, still on a huge learning curve but
coped really well with her outings, and we are
really pleased with both ponies! Now we are
looking forward to another show or two before
our All Welsh in December.
SNOWDON VALE STUD has one foal a little
palomino colt by Woranora Minstrel out of
Creswell Gretel and he is very cute! We are very
thankful to Dean Quinlivan for selling us the
beautiful little chestnut Herod stallion, ImperialMadryn and we are looking forward to breeding
him with our girls this season.
A note from Supreme Horseware, our All Welsh
Trophy Rugs have arrived and they look great!
With Welsh colours and a HUGE Welsh logo on
one side and Sponsored by Supreme Horseware
on the other! They will look great on the win-
ning ponies at all the state shows as well as this
year's National show!

RPG RoundupVICTORIA - Ballarat & Central Highlands
ALPHA STUD says it was a great surprise to
see in the last Action that our dear old buck-
skin Section A stallion Jinchilla Nero (born
1990) was the leading Sec A stallion for Victoria.
People fall in love with this gentleman of the
equine world when they visit; his huge dark eyes
and very gentle disposition also make him a
dream of a stallion to own. His foals are also
very special as people owning them often say.
Congratulations to all who helped Nero receive
this award. Our first foal this year is Alpha PinUp Boy a cream blue eyed colt by Nero from
Alpha Pin Up. Alpha Royal Liege who we sadly
lost in April, has his first foal for the season on
the ground, Alpha Karisma our very precious
filly from Alpha Keepsake. Alpha Royal Liegealso had great success as a top sire being the
Leading Welsh sire for the APSB 2003/2004 and
just missed out by a few points in winning this
award again, he is very sadly missed.
Ballynamona has seen a few ponies move on to
new or lease homes. Imperial Radiance and
Ballynamona Vanita have moved to my daugh-
ter’s farm for grandchildren Will and Charlie to
ride. They are being brushed daily to within an
inch of their lives and ridden constantly, with no
worries now in getting the kids up and dressed
in the mornings. Ballynamona Jaslyn has headed
off to her new home to be started under saddle
and then go on to a performance career. Yearling
buckskin colt Ballynamona Romeo is currently
out on lease to Nicklewood Stud. We wish
Georgia lots of enjoyment with the beautiful
Romeo. Buckskin mare Ballynamona Reflectionand chestnut Glenire Morning Snow have been
leased to Prinley Park Stud to breed dilute ponies
with good height. We wish Tina many success-
ful foalings from these lovely ponies. We have
five foals due this season, four Section Bs by
Ballynamona Reality to Warranwood Banquet,Keyi Dawn Serenade, Congarinni Honeygemand Imperial Ruffle. Our lovely Part Welsh mare
Carisma Park Jade is also due to foal.
Coufel Stud reports that Coufel Remington with
rider Felicity Devereux came second in the First
ridden at Geelong Royal and got Reserve Cham-
pion Child’s Pony. Amaranda Summer Cloudwho has been sitting in my paddock for five
years, also competed at Geelong Royal with his
little rider Felicity and won the Ridden Welsh
under 12.2 hh and was awarded Reserve Cham-
pion Ridden Welsh. They also competed in the
Working Hunter for the very first time and got a
fourth. This pair has only been together for the
past two months and seem to be getting along
beautifully.
Dyarah Park. Well it’s was a busy weekend for
us, 14th-17th October. Charlotte and I attended
The Royal Geelong Show and placed with
Elargee Preacherman in the led gelding and the
leading rein class it was a perfect day and we
met some lovely people. On Sunday morning I
was very pleased to see Glynyarra Park Tapestrywith her new very pretty bay filly foal by Colee-myn Park Back Chat and then off to the local
school fete where Elargee Preacherman and
Stonyvale Roger Ramjet were the lucky ponies
for pony rides all day by all ages big and small,
they took everything in their stride! With bal-
loons and paper flying everywhere due to the
lovely South West Victoria weather! On Mon-
day we had our second filly a perlino out of
Shalida Park Cherish, our first foal by our new
boy Thorpeville Anthony. Two mares are due to
foal in the next week or so it’s a busy but a fun
time for us!!
Lykanarro Stud. Well finally feels like spring
with the arrival of our first foal a lovely big Sec-
tion B filly by Cheraton Cadan x FayrewaysAnna-Marie. Kirreway Vivacious, Imperial Her-mina and Mirinda Goldmark are also expecting
foals by Cadan. Finally getting back into some
horse action after my broken leg which is mend-
ing slowly; hopefully summer will help. Our
family were very saddened by the sudden death
of the champion pony Lykanarro Rockafellaowned by the Maloney family. Rocky won many
major awards in the Welsh and open showing
scene and was about to start a dressage career.
Hoping to take a youngster to our BACH Pony
Pageant in October, my first show since last year.
Salient Stud has had four beautiful Section A fil-
lies so far, all by Sketty Park Chicago, a chestnut
out of Salient Old Lace, a palomino/grey out of
Salient Arpege, a black possibly grey filly out of
Salient Old Fashion and a bay filly from SalientPendant, four lovely babies and we are very
happy with them. We welcome the very expres-
sive cob mare Dracmoore Dixie Chick by NeboDyfrig Express (Imp UK) to our cob herd. A four
year old 14.3hh sect D mare she will be a very
welcome addition to our breeding program with
her big, flashy movement and true cob type. We
look forward to seeing what she will do in the
stud. ‘Ellie’, Crosswynds Eclipse, has been sold
to Queensland as a show and future broodmare.
We wish her new owners every success with this
lovely Section C mare. We are still waiting on a
couple of foals and for once are actually in hope
for a nice colt.
Vanoca Park Welsh Ponies. Foaling is going
well with 17 foals so far, we have sold several
ponies over the winter and wish all the new own-
ers the best with their purchases!! We have had
a great start to the show season with Nattai DarkLady taking out Supreme Welsh Exhibit at Gee-
long Royal Show 2011.
Mithril Stud made the difficult decision to sell
two stallions recently. Derlwyn Rhys, a young
Section B pony, has gone to Julie Bagrie’s Stone-
fields Stud on the South Island, New Zealand.
Rhys left us a lovely filly out of Mithril MaryKathleen and nice colt from Mithril Keepsake
and Hazelmere Ups a Daisy who we had on
lease from Oceana Stud, gave Jade and
Chantelle a lovely filly by him. Bookra SportsEdition was sold to Megan and Trish Farrell of
Shannon Lodge and they have him out and about
already, winning Supreme Section C at the
BACH Welsh Pony Pageant. We are thrilled to
see Sport being shown - he is much too good a
pony to languish in our paddock and only cover
one or two mares a season. We have retained his
five year old Section D son Westbury Spitfire,
who is doing well in Pony Dressage and showing
lots of talent for jumping. As a parting present,
Sport left us a super palomino colt from MithrilValerie - he looks like one to run on and should
make a dressage pony. We were very pleased
that Mithril Hester has given us a black colt after
three beautiful black fillies, all by our veteran
stallion Owendale Brandyman. It’s hard to be
ungrateful for all those fillies, but we really
wanted a possible follow on for Brandyman, and
now we have one - Mithril Cary Grant, we
reckon he is sure to be a leading man.
The BACH Pony Pageant was held on 31st Oc-
tober at Geelong Showgrounds in the most
dreadful wet conditions. Entries were very good
although a number of exhibitors did not attend
on the day for various reasons. Thanks to all
judges, stewards, exhibitors and workers on the
day who managed to cope with the shocking
conditions and the last minute changes to the
program due to the late withdrawal of one of the
judges. After two wet shows on the trot we have
booked a beautiful day for the 2012 show.

OUR EDUCATION DAY was held on 21stAugust at the magnificent indoor complex
Oakwood Riding School. We were honoured tohave gathered four of Australia’s most influentialpony people to share their experience andknowledge with those who attended. The daywas well supported with many new faces whichwe were delighted to see. Daryl King was on themicrophone and gave a wonderful introductionto each presenter.
Darrell Owen from the well known OwendaleStud spoke on Showing in Hand and Presenta-tion. The Welsh A and Welsh B ponies providedfor Darrell’s talk were great representatives ofthe breed and stood quietly while Darrell ex-plained the good points of Welsh conformation.
Next was Amanda Hewitt who spoke on BasicColour Genetics and Identification. This talkwas very informative and gave everyone a per-fect overview of the many colours and variationsavailable within the horse world. She also pro-vided some great pictures that better explainedthe colours and markings. A light luncheon wasprovided for all in attendance thanks to the won-derful helpers in the kitchen. At lunch break wealso ran a Dutch Auction. Our Auctioneer wasDaryl King who did a splendid job in windingthe crowd up and encouraging them to spendmoney. It was all in great fun and many a bar-gain was bought.
Peter Harkness discussed harness. We had twomembers from the Australian Carriage DrivingSociety with their ponies, one harnessed up to aViceroy and the other to a Jinker. Peter ex-plained the different types of harness availableand how it should be fitted correctly. The Aus-tralian Carriage Driving Society Inc. also set upa stand to display the many photos, magazinesand equipment used and were keen to explain toany new enthusiast the benefits of harness.

STUD NEWS:
Sue Sporys of Foxbridge Stud reports - I havejust returned from the UK where I had the goodfortune to have the opportunity to attend part ofthe Fayre Oaks Welsh Pony Sale including theHigh Flyers Sale & Dinner – I always wanted tosee 100’s of Welshies in one place! I am gladthat I didn’t take my cheque book. So manybeautiful ponies many that would have looked athome in my paddock! Prices I felt were rela-tively low in comparison to ours given some ofthe quality ponies available for sale – although Idid overhear that the average price was up andso was the clearance rate much to the auctioneerssurprise given the economic climate in Europeat the moment. I must say that I did notice aslight difference in type between the Welsh inthe UK and Australia – unless it was my imagi-nation and this is my opinion only – their poniesboth A and B seem larger, have more substanceand seem to be shorter coupled than ours and Ifelt that their ponies eyes were larger and betterset than some of ours, also their ears were tiny. There were three stallions that I would gladlyhave brought home – two A’s and one B – andlots and lots of beautiful mares – just as well IRTdid that talk at the AGM – it was just so tempt-
ing. So I spent a fortune at the trade stalls in-stead. (When Hubby thought about the trade off,he was a happy chappy). now I just have to waitfor the parcels to arrive home.
Marconi Stud has had a great start to the foalingseason with two fillies and two colts, one of eachby resident stallion Weston Park Mercury andone of each by our our past sire Tooravale Pi-casso. We are retaining one of the fillies and theother three have been sold to show/stud homes.Still another three foals to arrive in the comingweeks. A new arrival in partnership with Thor-wood stud is the gorgeous yearling cremello PartWelsh/Riding Pony colt Thorwood Quicksilversired by our own Weston Park Mercury out ofBeleradah Spun Sugar. We would like to con-gratulate Welsh B stallion Marconi Matrix andVanessa O’Donnell winning a WPCS medal forSupreme Champion Ridden Welsh exhibit at therecent Western NSW RPG WPCS Spring Show,Nicole Rivett’s Part Welsh mare Pearl of Mar-coni has also been taking all before her in herhome state of NSW with her most recent winbeing Champion ARP at the NSW Arabian StateTitles.
Llanfairbyrn Stud reports at the time of writingwe are in the midst of foaling and to date havethree colts and a filly by our Kingswood Snow-man. Llanfairbryn Delyth has a bay sabino filly,Christabel has a chestnut colt, Christine has abuckskin colt and Miss Daisy has a grey colt - acolourful lot. We received the good news thatLlanfairbryn Ffansi That has foaled a chestnutfilly by Snowman for the Caddy Family - a fillyat last after five colts. Llanfairbryn Little Heronowned by the Gibney family has had her secondfilly in succession to Nattai Bedwyn. Now all weneed is a few more fillies here at Llanfairbryn.
So far this season Tooravale Stud has five foals,a grey filly by Weston Manhattan out of WestonPark Candice, a chestnut filly out of WestonPark Coppelia and a grey filly from Weston ParkPromise by Tooravale Jamaica, a buckskin coltby Tooravale Phantom out of Tooravale Pa-tience and a grey colt out of Tooravale Cameoby Weston Park Vision. Very pleased with themall so far; another six to go, which includes oneby Heniarth Wood-Wind (AI UK).

UK VISIT 2011
WE SET OFF on our long awaited UK trip
on a cool afternoon in mid July, Denise,
the experienced international traveller (one trip
to the UK two years ago) and Heather, the com-
plete novice (terrified of flying). We left behind
the incessant rain and fetlock deep mud and
headed for the hopefully mild UK summer.
Having survived the flight, we stayed in London
for one night to recover our strength. We then
commenced the train section of our journey to
Builth Wells and the Royal Welsh Show. Our
first leg was to Swansea on the West Wales
coast, to meet the train to Builth Wells. Ha ha!!
The train windscreen broke about an hour out of
London and we were off-loaded at Didcot Park-
way - half way to Wales. We were then loaded
onto a train to Cardiff, then yet another train to
Swansea. We had of course missed our connec-
tion to Builth Wells. Panic, followed by rescue!
Along with two other passengers we were
treated to a taxi ride to Builth Wells at no cost -
moral = it pays to pre-book train tickets as the
railways are then obliged to get you to your des-
tination!!
In Builth Wells the weather was great. We vis-
ited Eppynt Stud and were rewarded with the
sight of a mob of the most beautiful Welsh
Mountain Ponies running free on the hills - a
fabulous sight. We also met up with fellow Yarra
Valley RPG member, Kate Abbott, and spent
four wonderful days at the Royal Welsh Show,
watching the most amazing array of Welsh
ponies and cobs you could imagine. The Royal
Welsh should be a definite for everyone’s Bucket
List.
The next leg of our journey was by train to
Aberystwyth via Shrewsbury in UK – nothing
by train in Wales seems to go in a straight line!!
We arrived in Shrewsbury OK, but the connect-
ing train to Aberystwyth shrank from four car-
riages to two carriages, so we travelled like
sardines. According to Denise, “This is an ad-
venture”.
In Aberystwyth we hired a car for a couple of
weeks touring. We were also kindly collected
by Anne Jones (Frongoch Stud) who showed us,
not only her own lovely ponies, but took us to
Park Stud (Cobs) which is also the base for Or-
mond Stud (Welsh Mountain Ponies), once again
seeing some really beautiful animals.
While at Parc Stud we met Timothy Evans, one
of Wales’ well known tenors, who also has a
wealth of knowledge about Welsh Mountain
Ponies. He kindly arranged for us to visit Ce-
maes Welsh Mountain Pony Stud set high in the
Preseli Mountains. Once again we were treated
to lovely ponies running on the hills. The views
were spectacular though we believe the temper-
atures are well below freezing in winter.
We were made so welcome by all these people
and cannot express too strongly our appreciation
of their wonderful hospitality.
Onwards then to Cricceith on the West coast for
a few days R & R and sightseeing - no ponies.
Then on to Caernarfon where we first visited
David Jones and Geraint Thomas at Telynau
Stud (Section B and Part Welsh) for a sumptuous
dinner. More beautiful ponies and fantastic
scenery. David and Geraint judged at the last
Yarra Valley Feature Show and it was lovely to
catch up with them again. We also visited
Gwyndaf and Emma Edwards (Fronbach Stud)
who have some really lovely Welsh Mountain
Ponies and were treated to yet another banquet.
Emma also took us on a ‘girlie’ day out to Port
Meirion, one of the most popular tourist spots in
Wales. Known as ‘Little Italy’ it is very Italian
in design and has everything a tourist could wish
for.
Then on to Conwy on the North Coast for more
sightseeing and castles. Still lovely weather but
we must admit that driving in the UK is a little
hairy and one does not try to park at the beach
resorts. We then headed back to Builth Wells,
stopping at Rhayader to buy Welsh Crystal.
More beautiful country and better driving.
At Builth Wells we were invited to visit Maesg-
wyn Stud where Lewis Edwards and his family
made us very welcome despite being very busy
preparing sheep for Anglesey Show. Once again
we saw beautiful Welsh Mountain Ponies. It is
really a breath-taking sight watching them run
seemingly wild on the lovely patchwork hills.
We then spent two days at the International
Welsh Show, which is held every two to four
years somewhere in Europe. It was just our luck
that it was held in Wales this year. It is a shame
this show is not more widely advertised within
the Welsh community here so visitors could plan
their trip and take in both the Royal Welsh and
International Welsh Shows. This is another
‘Bucket List’ show.
Once again we were treated to a magnificent se-
lection of ponies and cobs each presided over by
two judges. There are also extra events like the
‘Traditional Ridden Welsh’ class, where exhibits
are shown only at a walk and a spanking trot, as
they would have travelled the country years ago.
Interesting also to watch the Supreme Awards
which were judged by all the judges together.
After each individual workout, every judge held
up a numbered card, facing the spectators, and
the scores were added to select the winner. A
slow process, but does give an insight into each
judge’s thinking.
Our next stop was Bath for more sightseeing.
We also visited Betty French (Forlan Stud) for
our last look at beautiful ponies. Betty has some
lovely ponies with the most delightful tempera-
ments. We actually managed to find her prop-
erty without getting lost! However we did
managed to dint the car windscreen on the way
home - more driving horrors! We toured Stone-
henge and surrounding areas by bus and had a
lovely horse-drawn carriage tour of Bath. It is a
lovely city but we were pleased not to drive
through the town centre.
Then we headed back to London for a couple of
days, where we found ourselves on the fifth floor
of the hotel with a broken lift - not funny!! More
sightseeing, bus tours and a lovely walk through
Hyde Park. We even saw a group of children
setting out on a mounted ride to Hyde Park from
Hyde Park Mews, right in the middle of the Lon-
don back streets. Something you would not see
in Melbourne!
We had by then been away five weeks and were
ready to come home, however Melbourne de-
cided to turn on the fog and we were detoured,
at the last minute, to Sydney and back - not
funny either!! We had a great time though, met
some lovely people and saw some of the most
beautiful ponies and cobs you can imagine. This
is definitely a trip you should make if you can.

THIS SPRING, the WA Regional Promo-
tional Group welcomed a host of new addi-
tions - not only of the equine kind, but also an
amazing 42 human members! It’s fantastic to
have so many new Welsh enthusiasts join the
fold and with such strong numbers we can really
fly the flag for our breed on the West Coast.
It’s a testament to our membership that we have
so many successful ponies and cobs competing
in a diverse range of equestrian pursuits. In par-
ticular, harness is really taking off in WA with a
great Welsh turnout to the Step Back In Time
Carriage Driving Show hosted by Murray Dis-
tricts Carriage Driving Club. Competitors and
South Australian judge Rose Pisconeri dressed
in circa 1800-1910 attire catching the eye of
spectators keen to find out more about driving.
Indi Placebo won the Concours D’Elegance and
both Turnout and Champion Pony was awarded
to Penley Narcissus, shown in the Authentic
Buggy. Champion Horse and the Supreme Har-
ness Exhibit for the day went to the big-moving
Section C Narcoola Parc Baldwin driven by
Merryn Bojcun of Albany for Athol Purchase.
Part Welsh gelding Trapalanda Dandaragan,
owned by Tracey Tester, is another horse doing
wonderfully in harness, recently returning home
from the Bundanoon New South Wales Carriage
Driving Festival the best performed Part Welsh
of the Show. He was also awarded the Supreme
Harness exhibit at the Perth Royal Show.
It was a glorious October day for the Welsh
classes at the 2011 Perth Royal Show with judge
Helen Dohan from NSW having a strong selec-
tion of quality animals to choose from. Early
Champion Welsh Mountain Colt or Filly hon-
ours went to the up-and-coming star WendamarNayeli owned by the Edwards Family, while
Kim Thomas’ San-del Popstar was named
Champion Welsh Mountain Stallion or Colt.
Helen found both her Supreme Welsh Mountain
Pony and Supreme Champion Welsh exhibit
(winner of the Emlyn trophy) in the lovely bay
mare Dalgangle Cariad owned by Hazel Filear.
Owendale Firefly was the Champion Welsh
Pony Stallion or Colt while the Champion Welsh

at her very first outing that really caught the
judge’s eye - Champion Part Welsh Mare or Filly
and Supreme Champion Part Welsh Exhibit was
Bramley Cleopatra owned by Carla Towers-
Hammond.
The ridden classes were very competitive with
Dalgangle Candice owned by the Harper Family
taking out the honours for Champion Ridden
Welsh while Helen Duffy’s Cimeron Disco Divacompleted a lovely workout for the Champion
Ridden Part Welsh sash. Welsh ponies also held
their own in the open competition with Amanda
Taylor’s well performed Owendale William ofOz awarded Champion Show Hunter Galloway.

Horse of the Year, run by the Geraldton Combine
Equestrian Club Show Horse Subcommittee
under judge Anna Duffy. Melearon DownsWilliam Tell was awarded First Ridden Pony of

Year 14hh & under went to Wendamar Blushwhile Part Welsh Command Performance ofConneely was awarded Large Pony of the Year
12hh up to 14hh.
Peta Gallagher’s Part Welsh Yule Tara’s Ooh LaLa had her first official outing in October, going
from novice to champion in the same day. An-
other pony doing extremely well on the show
circuit is Morefair Welsh Ponies’ scopey mare,
Morefair Portia, who was successful in being
awarded Champion Small Hunter Pony at the
Gosnells Masters, following her SHC Classic
win in May. The stud also advised us that their
first Jackpot daughter Ngaire, has been just been
started under saddle and that Congarinni ThaiSilk, acquired from Gail Maize in 2009, has
foaled a very nice chestnut filly by resident sire
Morefair Bryn.
With the breeding season now in full swing,
Western Australia members have welcomed a
gorgeous drop of Welsh foals, many of whom we
are destined to see in the show ring in the not too
distant future. Jamiru Pony Stud is thrilled with
their two new coloured colts by Wendamar Fi-garo - a cremello out of San-del Pippa and a
palomino out of Nindylup Elffyn.
Brookevalley Welsh Cob Stud are proud as
punch with the safe arrival of a black colt from
Llanarth Emperess (UK Imp) by Trapalanda DaiWynne, who will now be offered to outside
mares via chilled semen. Imperial Magdelyngave birth to a huge buckskin colt by Indi TheMoney Maker four days prior. Avonvalley Ariel(Imp UK) has been enjoying life in the sun, she
arrived at the stud 12 months ago. Joanne made
a throwaway comment of, "She would look good
in my paddock" which started the ball rolling!
Penley and Penrhys Pony Studs have enjoyed a
fantastic start to the 2011 breeding season with
the arrival of seven fillies and two colts. EvansRoyalist (Imp USA) has exceeded expectations
with his third crop of foals, finally giving them
the much anticipated daughters to retain for fu-
ture breeding. His 2009 and 2010 progeny have
had much show success with Penley Nadia being
awarded Supreme Welsh Foal at the WA Foal
Show and then winning the yearling filly class
at the Perth Royal Show. Penrhys Autographwon the yearling colt class at the Perth Royal
Show and then went on to be awarded Reserve
Champion Colt or Stallion. Penrhys Apostle was
Supreme Welsh Gelding at the Youngstock
Showcase with Penley Royal Glance first in the
yearling filly class. Penley Naturalist produced
a full sister to the successful Part Welsh yearling
gelding, Penley Skyshow, who was Reserve
Champion Part Welsh Gelding at the Perth Royal
Show and runner-up Supreme Champion Part
Welsh Foal at the Youngstock Showcase. PenleyEl Paso once again won the Welsh B Gelding
class at the Perth Royal Show.
Sally Browne has advised that the first foal born
in WA by Bookra Legal Edition is now on the
ground, an adorable Section D colt out of cob
Springdale Anna Rose.
Leeara Park are pleased with the arrival of their
first foal for the season ‘Carter’ (Royal andRegal of Sefton x Tanglewood Park Serenade inGold), the full brother to Leeara Park Royal Pe-tite, Birthday Girl and Royal Jester, and half
brother to Leeara Park First Edition (Exp NZ) -
each having proven themselves as either Royal
Show Champions, HOTY winners or claimed
National titles.
Sadly, Shangrala Arabian and Pony Stud lost a
palomino colt by Wendamar Cassanova last
week but are looking forward to another baby by
him due in November. Their relatively recent
purchase, the lovely Welsh A stallion ElargeeRowen has just covered his first mares and Sue
and her husband are very excited about meeting
his progeny next year.
