The Pump Track opened on July 17 and we were official-lythefirstasphaltpumptracktoeveropeninCalgary.Quiteamilestoneforoursmall,humbleCommunity!

Thewordquicklygotout, andattimesitseemedlikeallofCalgarywascomingtocheckoutournewpark.Weheard rave reviews of the track, and there were people coming from over an hour away to check it out. With so many other summer holiday plans, day camps, and otheractivitiesinlimboduetoCOVID-19,thetrackre-ally opened up at a fortuitous time to give people a new place to go outside and be active. Next summer should bequieteraslifewillhave(hopefully)returnedtonor-mal, and there are more Pump Tracks being planned and builtintheCitywhichwillfurtherdispersethecrowds.

Going forward, there will likely be some tweaks to the setup of the park, most notably to address parking and safety issues posed to cyclists coming and going from the park. The exact details will be sorted out this off-season, but you can expect a more orderly approach to parking in the alley which may also include restric-tions on parking in certain areas. This will ensure resi-dents and users of the alley can still move about safely. We are also looking at installing another garbage can at the park. Finally, the donor sign is just about done so all of our corporate and personal donors can expect to see the permanent signage recognizing your donation go up soon.

Don’t Let Intruders Deceive You on The PhoneA message from the Federation of Calgary Communities

A person who is intent on stealing your property would prefer to do it when you are not there. To reduce the odds of getting caught, a burglar may phone first to see if any-one is home. They may get your name from the mailbox or from the family moniker above the door, or they could simply look up your name in the phone book. If they get no answer, they may decide it’s a good time to break into your house. If someone does answer the phone, the po-tential intruder may try to get as much information as possible about the household in order to determine the best time to strike. Rapists sometimes use this tactic to determineifawomanishomealone.Becausecriminalscan be very good at extracting information, it’s impor-tant that you treat a stranger on the phone the same way you would if that person came to your door.

Watch what you say. Warn family members not to give information to strangers over the phone about who is home, who is out, or how long anyone is expected to be gone. Do not give your credit card number over the phone to anyone unless you initiated the call and are absolutely positive that you are dealing with a reputable organization — for example, when making reservations for a plane flight or buying tickets through an agency.

Answering machines. If you use a phone answering machine, your recording should not say that you will be gone for a specific time. It’s better to say, “We can’t take your call right now, but we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.” This is also a good message for a single woman to put on her phone machine, since it conveys the impression that she is not living alone. For added security, some women who live alone ask a male friend to record their outgoing message.

Unlisted phone number and address. Consider get-ting an unlisted phone number or removing your ad-dress from the phone book. An intruder might see your name on the directory of an apartment building and use it to throw you off the track while calling over the lobby telephone or intercom system. Consider all ofthe places that your name might be seen by the public

and then use your discretion about where and how you want to list it.

Obscene callers and other unusual talk.Hanguponobscene callers immediately. Do not show that you are upset or afraid. Many nuisance calls are made by in-dividuals who pick names randomly from the phone book. If you do not react and simply hang up, most of the time they will not call back. If the caller continues to harass you report it to the police and phone company.

When to call the police. Police should be notified if you receive an unusual number of “wrong number” calls, hang-ups, late night calls from strangers, obscene, or otherunusualphonecalls.Callthepoliceimmediatelyifsomeonethreatensyouoryourfamily.Yourlocalphoneservice may also be able to offer a remedy. If necessary, you can change your phone number.

November reminds us of the coming winter and gives uswarningstogetready.Butforme,Novemberismoreabout Remembrance Day, and the sacrifices made in warsCanadianshavechosentofightin;chosentofightfor our values and beliefs. While COVID doesn’t comeanywhere near the same sacrifice, there are similarities and reminders that are worth noting.

As Canadians, we strongly support individuals’ rightsand responsibilities, but we’ve always been able to bal-ance our individuality with an understanding that there is a common good, and sometimes that common good outweighs those individual rights. I mentioned last month how proud it makes me, not as your MLA but as justanotherCanadian,thatwe’vedonesowellinthink-ing more of others than of ourselves. That is the same attitude that sent young men and women into harm’s way. They knew the risks but accepted that there was a greater good. Even today, our military and first respond-ers stand and serve.

The rows of white crosses along Memorial Drive every year serve as that stark reminder of how many Alber-tansgavetheultimatesacrifice.CountingtheBoerWaras our first international war, we have 117 years of do-ingourpartinagreaterglobalcommunity.Overthose117 years, the world has become a much smaller and a much more connected community. As we look be-yondCOVIDandtowardsaworldofgreatertradeandtravel freedom, we must remember our vital place in the world and hope that war never again is a necessary tool to resolve issues.

As always, please remember if you need help with prov-incial programs from my office, Tasha is there to help you. Reach her at: 403-640-1363.

Although 2020 has been an especially challenging year for all of us, we still live in the best province of the best country.

I hope your family continues to feel safe and supported.

I look forward to connecting again soon.
