City of Calgary Update as of June 11, 2019What’shappeningwiththeoldFairviewArenasite?
There are a number of factors weighing into consid-erations for what comes next for the site where theFairviewArenasat,priortotheroofcollapseinFebru-ary2018.ThereisnoCitybudgetavailabletodevelopthe site.The Fairview communitywas below the rec-ommended allocation for green space. For now, thesitehasbeencleanedup,andgrasshasbeenseeded.Oncetheseedisestablished,itwillbeopentousebyresidents.TheCitywillpaintthesouth-facingwallthatis now exposed, and provide adequate landscapingtomaintainthesite. Inthemeantime,therearesomeplanning processes underway that will guide devel-opmentof Fairviewas awhole, andwill informwhatmightmakesenseforthissite.
Area 31 Local Area PlanningMulti-communitylocalareaplansisanewCityapproachto localareaplans.TheyarecreatedbyTheCity inco-ordinationwitharangeofstakeholders,includingcom-munity associations, local residents, local groups, localbusinessowners, localdevelopers, andbuilders.Multi-community localareaplansoutlinewhereandhowanarea might grow, change, and evolve over time, andprovideplanningdirectionfordevelopment,aswellashighlightsinfrastructureneedstosupportgrowth.
The estimated public launch of the Area 31 Multi-community local area planning initiative, whichincludes the community of Fairview, is fall 2019. Thefirst stakeholder engagement session took place onJune20atRoseKohnArena.Itintroducedtheinitiativeandcollectedinputtohelpinformtheprojectplanandassociatedcommunicationsandengagementstrategy.
Fairview-Specific EngagementCalgary Neighbourhoods is committed to communityengagement in Fairview and determining how it willstructure engagement to synthesize with the Area 31effortsbeingpursued inyourneighbourhood.Thisen-gagementeffortwouldbeCity-led,coordinatedincon-sultationwiththeFairviewCommunityAssociation,andworkwith the information gathered through theArea31localplanningwork.Thiswouldbeacommunityen-gagementopportunitytoengageFairviewresidentsinabroaderconversationontheirvisionfortheirneighbour-hood.TheCitycanthenworktogethertodeterminehowthe8038FairmountDrivesitecanfitintowhatresidentsimagineforthefutureFairviewasawhole.
8038 Fairmont Drive Site and Insurance MoniesCalgaryRecreationhasdeterminedthatnonewarenawillberebuiltonthissiteandthereisnoneed/planfora Recreation facility at this location.TheCity received$4,929,523.95fromitsinsuranceprovider.Thereis$4.3million remainingaftercoveringcostsassociatedwiththedemolitionand remediation.The remaining fundswillbeusedtowardsaniceallocationstudyandfuturerecreationcapitaldevelopmentproject(s)elsewhereinthecity,basedonassessedneeds.NoneofthesefundshavebeenearmarkedforreinvestmentinFairview.

cheese),meatprotein,andnon-perishableitems.Thereisalsoaccesstobabyformula,babyfood,anddiapersifthereareyoungchildren inthehouse.Hampers must be picked up in person;however,a localdepot isopenfor thatpurpose at St.Andrew’s PresbyterianChurch,703HeritageDr.SW,everySaturdayfrom2-4pm.Otherpickuplocationsarealsoavailable.
Restrictions:Clients cancall inon theirown for theirfirst3hampers.Afterthat,theyneedtoworkwithan-other agency of their choice that can refer them foranother4hampers.Eachhamperneedstobe30daysapart,andaclient/familycanbook12hampersinthespanofayear.
Option 2:To request a food hamper of dry goods, non-perish-able foodandagrocerygiftcard,call theSociety of St Vincent DePaul atSt.Cecilia’sParishby12:00pm,noon, on Monday at 403-252-2790, extension 223.Hampers are deliveredtoeligibleclientseveryWednes-dayat1pm.Restrictions: Clients must complete an intake form and are eligible for a hamper once every three (3) months. The Society is closed for the month of July.
Option3:DropbytheAcadia Food Pantry ProgramatMcDou-gallUnitedChurch,8516AthabascaSt.SE,every thirdTuesdayof themonth,year-round, from12noon-1:00pm. The food pantry program works with Spinz-A-Roundandother foodrescueprogramstocollectandredistribute freshproduce andother perishable itemstopeopleinneed,noquestionsasked,otherthanyourname, and the number and ages of family membersbenefittingfromthefoodprovided.
Restrictions: The food pantry is open only once a month (the next date is Tuesday, July 16, 2019), and food is dis-tributed on a first come, first served basis. Registration be-gins @ 11:45am.
