Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14 B:
Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right. ~Oprah Winfrey
I hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday season. According to the calendar we are
beginning a new year and it is when many of us make resolutions to improve ourselves in
some way, such as taking better care of ourselves through exercise and diet or just being a
better person through our actions with others. Sadly, most resolutions we make will be
history by February if not sooner. One resolution I would like to see us all make is to
spend just a little more time being active Lions. Maybe it might be participating in more
of your Club’s activities or attending a few more meetings. Every little bit helps in
sustaining our existence into the future.
January also marks the half way point in our Lions’ year and I feel that this would be a
good time to see where we stand with our membership numbers. For the period July 1,
2017 thru December 15, 2017 we have added 55 new Lions and have dropped 67
resulting in a net loss of 12 members. I should point out that many of these drops were due to a few clubs making overdue
roster adjustments. Our mission at this time is to make sure these 55 new members feel welcome and comfortable and part
of our team. As I have said in the past, our most precious and important asset is our members. As of the end of November,
14 of our 34 clubs have added at least one new member and at this time 34% of our members are woman which is the
highest percentage in the Multiple District 14. All in all, I feel we are doing well with membership and I want thank each
of you who have sponsored a new member this Lions; year.
I am happy to report that our district has four new Certified Guiding Lions as a result of attending the Leadership
Symposium on November 5th in Greensburg. They are Lion Melissa Kondrich-Hogan (KL Monroeville LC), PDG Alice
Jones (Mon River Fleet LC), Lion Marni Latterman (KL Pleasant Hills LC) and First VDG / Kirby Marchand (KL White
Oak LC). Thank you and congratulations to you four dedicated Lions.
At this time, I would like to welcome home PDG Harold Fletcher from the Cleveland Clinic where he underwent a very
successful double lung transplant. He is no longer tethered to an oxygen tank and is ready to resume his job as Cauldron
editor next month. I also want to give a big thank you to Lion Frank Deluca for the outstanding job he did as interim
editor for the last several months.
Yours in Lionism, DG Geoff .655.3321 H

Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B,
I hope that all of you had a wonderful Ashura, Bodhi Day, Christmas, Hanukkah or
Kwanzaa and had a fun time bringing in the New Year. We lost a lot of good Lions in
2017 and our thoughts and prayers go out to those families.
We are now in the last half of this Lions year and we must do all that we can to increase out membership. District 14-B
has done OK, but losses far exceed the new members that we’ve added. We need to do better. Getting new members is a
365-day task; it is not good enough to try every two of three months, or once a month or even once a week. We must look
at every day as being the day that we will get a new member. Increasing membership numbers is vital for every club and
our District to function as they should, to carry out new projects and objectives, and to stay in good standing with Lions
Clubs International.
Our next District Cabinet Meeting in February 10th and it would be great to see more clubs represented there. Your clubs
should be taking an active role in District matters by attending the Cabinet Meetings to see what is going on and to offer
your voice and comments on the subjects that are brought up. Our District is dependent on the involvement and strength
of its clubs. I encourage all those clubs that are not actively participating in District functions to become more involved.
Your club can benefit from the things you learn from other clubs. We need to share our ideas, successes and failures with
each other. Being involved in the District is the key. It is a win-win for all. Because of the hard work of Lions, Districts
across the nation and around the world are getting stronger and our service impact is growing. District 14-B and your
club can benefit by your increased involvement.
International President Naresh Aggarwal has challenged us to “Celebrate the Gift of Lions.” He says, “Why be ordinary?
Why be an ordinary Lion or club or do an ordinary project? Worldwide, Lions serve energetically, innovatively and most
importantly, effectively. We change lives and improve communities. We see a need and fill it. Doing good is its own
reward. We gain so much by giving to others.”
Speaking of giving, I’m starting to ask around for Lions to give a little more, by helping our District by serving in the
cabinet. Have you thought about giving a little more? There will be many open positions on the District Cabinet and I
would love to talk to you about how you can help during my year as Governor. I also want to remind everyone that at this
halfway point, District 14-B still does not have a 2nd Vice District Governor, which essentially means that we do not have
a 1st Vice District Governor for next year. If you have ever considered being a District Governor, now is the time!

By far the most valuable element of
these meetings is the opportunity for
key leaders to simply exchange ideas
and challenges with other club
officers and members.
The meetings generally focus on the
implementation of service projects,
club management, membership
growth and leadership development.
While the main objective is to
provide club a forum for discussion,
the meeting also provides the zone
chairperson the opportunity to gather
recommendations that can be shared
with the DG team.

Harold is back home after spending the 52 days in Cleveland. Harold said “It's great to be back

everyone for the prayers, phone calls, cards and well-wishes! You're All so wonderful!”

What a gift!
As a member of the West Mifflin Lions Club, I was collecting donations for the blind on our annual White Cane
Days at the Giant Eagle next to Kennywood Park back in August. A young lady placed what looked like a $20
bill into my White Cane can. Later I discovered it was some 20’s along with two $100 bills. We thank her for
her most generous donation.
Her contribution plus the contributions of many who participated will benefit blind organizations in the
Pittsburgh area.

Congratulations to Vayda Caruso – 12 years old – a 6th grader at Saint Maria Goretti Elementary School –
Friendship Campus in Bloomfield. The poster was submitted by the Bloomfield-Lawrenceville Lions Club at
the District 14B Cabinet Meeting on Saturday, November 11, 2017.
Vayda’s quote is: “The Future of Peace: I have two sides of my poster, dark black and white and a brightly
colored side. On the black and white side, I have Martin Luther King, Gandhi and Rosa Park who fought for
peace. On the bright side I have 5 countries that represent how far we have gotten for peace so that peace will
reign over the world as our “Future of Peace” one day.”
Congratulations to Vayda Caruso
Her poster will now be sent to Council Chair Larry Edwards to compete against all the other District winners in
Pennsylvania. The state winner will then be sent to Lions Club International to compete with the posters that are
submitted from across the 200 countries and geographical area.
Your club could get involved with the Peace Poster and International Essay Contests. Contact Peace Poster Chairperson
Lion Mary Ann Belles at 412-833-3450 or by email at [email protected]. Lion Mary Ann can come to a
meeting to show your club how to get started.

The Mon River Fleet Lions Club and Fleet Leo Club students of McKeesport Area School District Health Apprenticeship

Almost 200 children, parents and grandparents enjoyed the Frozen Winter Wonderland program held on December 2
during the Mon River Fleet Lions Club holiday pancake breakfast at the Main Pavilion in Renzie Park. Just look at those
smiles and happy faces as the children got to personally meet and take pictures with the Ice Princesses Ulsa and Anna.
Funds raised from the breakfast will be part of year-end distributions toward programs and services in the Mon River
Fleet communities of Braddock, Clairton, Duquesne and McKeesport. Co-chairs of the event were Lions Helen Stratigos
and Alison Piccolino. What a fantastic job done by all!
Members of the Mon River Fleet Lions Club collected gift cards for their annual “Holiday Gift Card” Framing. A total of
31 cards were collected for $1,083. Tickets were sold at the hospital, at the Mon River Fleet SHIP meetings, and the day
of the Frozen Pancake Breakfast on December 2. The winner, drawn that day, was Lion Belinda O’Keson shown with

They believe they can best
address needs when going

where they are in life, and
show them they care – not
