In Memory

At 10:00 PM on the night of November 17th 1864, General George Pickett sent a small

force from Howlett Line positions near the Howlett House in an attack on a heavily manned Union

picket line position to their front. In the assault force was Junior Lieutenant Henry C. Britton of

Company C, 9th Virginia Infantry. Crossing the "no man's land" to the enemy positions, Britton,

the only officer available in his company, led his company through and to the rear of the position

while supporting units spread right & left. This splendidly coordinated assault resulted in a quick

and total Confederate victory.

A letter is in Lt. Britton's service record from his regimental commander to the Secretary of War

recommending Lt. Britton for promotion to Captain of his company under the "Valor and Skill Act

of 1862" for his "special gallantry and distinction on the night of November 17th instant". The

letter states that Britton captured a Yankee Colonel in hand to hand combat and led his men

rapidly to the enemy rear surprising and securing almost the entire camp to his front. Besides the

Colonel, he personally captured two other officers. In all, the Yankees lost 5 officers and 112

enlisted men captured plus another 63 killed or wounded. Pickett's assault force lost 1 man dead

and 9 wounded. The Yankees initially admitted to a loss of about 40 but later admitted to more.

Yankee records also report that hundreds of other troops were caught so off guard at this

unexpected and fierce attack, that they simply threw down their weapons and fled. The captured

Union position was turned into a Confederate position including rifle pits and was never re-taken

by the Yankees.

The engagement took place in Chesterfield County. Lt. Britton and his men were from

Chesterfield so this action would have been "double sweet" for them. Lt. Britton enlisted at age 22

at the Chesterfield Court House and rose to the rank of First Sergeant before accepting a

commission to 2nd Lt. He was WIA at Malvern Hill July 1, 1862 and captured at Gettysburg

during Pickett's Charge. Held as a POW at Johnson's Island he returned to his company after being

exchanged March 1864. Unfortunately, he was captured again April 1, 1865 at Five Forks and was

returned to Johnson's Island until released June 18, 1865. At 6'5" tall, he was a conspicuous figure

with a service record reflecting courage & dedication.

Camp Annual Auction

I want to remind every one of our February annual "Auction Night". This has, historically,

been one of the most fun meetings that we have ever had. Besides being a lot of fun, it

accounts for about half of the money our little treasury gets each year. We need a big turnout

of members, friends, and families there with money in hand and ready to "do battle" in the

bidding process. We ask that you bring items to donate for the auction, please search

through your houses, garages, basements, and attics for those items that you no longer use or

need and are marketable to our members. Such items as books on the War Between the

States, relics, militaria, reenactors equipment, fishing equipment, hunting gear, camping

gear, edged weapons, pictures, etc. I have never seen anyone turn down a homemade cake or

pie

The Stuart-Mosby Society will hold a service at 11:00 AM in the Capitol building. Our service will start at 1:30 PM and last about an hour. We plan to follow our memorial service agenda. Make your hotel reservations OUTSIDE of Lexington ASAP to receive the SCV Discount.

Saturday, March 16th: Sons of Confederate Veterans Confederate Heritage Rally 2013, Biloxi, MS, Beauvoir. The Va Flaggers will travel together and take part in the parade and events there! Make plans to join them!

On Sunday, December 2nd, The Va Flaggers had the honor and privilege of forwarding the colors in the Mechanicsville Christmas Parade. They had 35 join and walk, ride or drive in the unit. It was an absolutely beautiful day, with temperatures near 70, lots of sunshine, and a nice breeze to lift the flags. Before the parade stepped off, they asked members of the Latane and FireEater Camps, SCV who had Flagged with them to join them for a group photo. These great pictures gives you an idea of the Confederate presence in the parade, but there were actually many more! :)
