Palm Oil

The grade 6 students have been investigating palm oil

and the impacts illegally farmed palm oil can have on

rainforests, the surrounding environments and the

animals that live there (including endangered tigers,

orang-utans, elephants and pangolins to name just a

few). Palm oil may be present in more than half the

products on supermarket shelves, and not all palm oil is

from sources that are responsible for deforestation but it

can be difficult to tell.

Here are a couple of apps that you can use to check if

the product you are buying contains palm oil (and

whether the palm oil is responsibly produced). These are

available from the App Store or Google Play.

Palm oil also is disguised as more than 200 different ingredient names (the most common being

‘vegetable oil’. Check out this list to further help you when you are shopping:

http://www.palmoilinvestigations.org/Fold%20up%20ingredients%20list-1.pdf

Here are some popular products we discovered contained palm oil:

Oreos KFC Pringles KitKat Nutella

Twisties Milo Skittles LCM’s Yoplait

Arnott’s Shapes Milky Way Maltesers Ice Magic McDonald’s

Maggie instant noodles Tim Tams Pop Tarts Nesquik

Lindt choc. Doritos Warheads M&M’s Starburst

Froot Loops Most margarines Ferrero Rocher Streets Ice Creams

It is also contained in many lipsticks, shampoos, ice creams, chips/crisps, instant noodles, breads,

frozen pizzas and soaps.
