We all have the ability to help one another by simply listening and sharing the stories of our search with each other. Member Robertus van der Wege will preach the sermon. November 27 – Unnatural Compassion – A good sermon makes its point without attracting undue attention to itself. It invites the hearer to enter into the experience, interacts with declarations, identify problems, and lean into solutions. Worship Ministry Chair Rev. Larry Brumfield will preach the sermon.

November 6 – Día de Los Muertos – Member Tracy Tanwar brings us this significant and unifying annual celebration. It is a day of prayer and remembrance of friends and family members who have died; to help support their spiritual journeys and ours. Though traced back to ancient Aztec rituals, it has become a deep multi-religious tradition that helps anchor our Liturgical year. It is a day of special food, music, costume, prayer, and beautiful altars.

November 13 – What Now, My Love? – “Life is first and foremost a collaborative endeavor. Our freedom only comes when we find ourselves in a place that sustains us, and among people who nurture us.” (from The Journey is the Joy – UU World.) The election is over and no matter the outcome, we will always have the community that sustains us, nurtures us, and sets us free. Rev. Mark Walz will preach the sermon.

November 20 – Listening: The Mortar for Building a Strong Community – Our world is in the midst of a refugee crisis that is often beyond our ability to comprehend. For many of us there is little we can do to help the vast numbers of people whose lives are in flux. Have we become jaded by the size of the problem or is there a way we can reach out to those whose lives are in turmoil?

If we look closely, we will realize that our “Faith Community” is a collection of religious refugees. Many of us are fleeing bad experiences and looking for citizenship in a new and more accepting community.

SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY

Social Justice Ministry Meeting Notes • Oct. 9, 2016 Anita Mills, Ad Hoc/Interim, Acting Chair

1. At check-in, we shared our passions related to Social Justice:a. Discrimination/equality/civil rightsb. Reproductive/gender/racial justicec. Peace – broad understanding of justice; people not killing/

hating each otherd. Justice – racial and economice. Environmental/eco justice: if we continue to destroy, our

existence will be mootf. Food – feeding people; it is the road to justice

7. Share the Platea. Q4 2016 (current): LULAC Rainbow Councilb. Q1 2017: Indigenous Environmental Group (Mavis is

working to identify a local group)c. Q2 2017: Innocence Project (judicial inequity)d. Q3 2017: Focusing on HRC or local LGBTQ organizatione. Q4 2017: UUSC program (yet to identified)

8. Filmsa. November: Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ Warb. December: FagBugc. Additional films being considered: Constantine’s Sword,

also a documentary on the architect (female) of the Vietnam War Memorial; reviewing possibles to coincide with Share the Plate emphasis, especially in second month of the respective quarter.

d. Promotions: Sherri has been contacted by Dorothy, who has expressed interest in working to contact community calendars. Scott will be forwarding to Sherri a list of community calendars of which he is aware. Anita will ensure that Sherri has contact information for the additional person who signed up at Snack and Serve for work on Films and Share the Plate.

9. Other discussion:a. All to think about ways to remain involved with Share the

Plate organizations on an ongoing basis rather than just during the quarter they are highlighted.

b. Agreed to participate in Guest at Your Table program of UUSC this year – Anita to contact Kathy KinKaid to see if RE would like to be involved.

c. Genesis House visitor last month invited UUCOC to participate in Interfaith group. Dec. 1 is Dallas Peace & Justice Center annual awards dinner. Traditionally UUCOC has sponsored a table with attendees contributing as they are able. Will address at next month’s meeting.

d. How to communicate activities of this group? Anita is currently printing and posting on bulletin board the Notes from our meeting, working with Scott to post on the UUCOC website, and working with Kathy G. to include a summary in the newsletter. Also, discussed was publishing a summary on the UUCOC FaceBook page. An email relay was discussed.

10. Next meeting: November 13, 2016, 12:30 pm, Hope Chapel

On the 11th Annual National Day of Silence, Erin Davies was victim to a hate crime in Albany, New York. Because of sporting a rainbow sticker on her VW Beetle, Erin's car was vandalized, left with the words "fag" and "u r gay" placed on the driver's side window and hood of her car. Despite initial shock and embarrassment, Erin decided to embrace what happened by leaving the graffiti on her car. She took her car, now known worldwide as the "fagbug," on a 58-day trip around the US and Canada. More at FirstTuesdayFilms.org
