Welcome to 2020... When moving into a new year you should always first look back. What can you do today that you were not capable

of 12 months ago? Did you challenge yourself over this past year to learn one new thing? Did you step out of your comfort zone to try or experience something new? What goal will you set for 2020? So many times a person sets too lofty of a goal that they become overwhelmed and they give up. If you could pick one small thing and accomplish that change, wouldn’t that be great?

A new year. A new fresh start. New goals. Feel the fear of trying something new or different and do it anyway. 365 new days. 365 new chances to get it done.

I look forward to this fresh year at King with all of you. Together we can achieve anything we put our minds to. Together we will accomplish the best possible outcomes and environment for our Members. Let’s do better than we did in 2019 and continue to move forward with Service Excellence in mind.

Gettingto know our Team

Carol AndersonMeetHi, I’m Carol and I have been

volunteering at King Veterans Home in many capacities for 20 plus years. I retired as a CNA after 24 years right here at King. I love our veterans so much that I felt I never really left! As of this date, I have racked-up over 5,500 hours of volunteer time.

I’m a mother of two. One of my daughters just retired as a CNA from King and my

other daughter Sue still works at King in the Medical Supply Department. I am a Guardian for two of our Vets and was also a Guardian for several vets over my years as an employee. Over the years, my volunteer work included doing personal laundry for up to 15 members on a weekly basis; making thousands of boutonnieres and corsages for the Spring Gala, which included buying silk flowers at many rummage sales, and helping with Ramp Bowling League.

Aside from volunteer work at King, I volunteer at the Waupaca Food Pantry. In my spare time, I love to read, bowl, enjoy the outdoors and I am a member of the quilting group at TLC in Waupaca.

Due to injuries, I haven’t been able to give many hours for the last two years, but I’ll be back at it as soon as possible. I miss the members and the atmosphere at King.

Home News

The King Rec Committee held their Christmas party at the Marden Memorial Center last month. The committee volunteers their services to King and donates funds to King for member activities. Thank you for all that you do and for your continued support.

Members, family and staff of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King came together to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Chuck Davis, a member at King, is a survivor of Pearl Harbor. A big thank you to American Legion Post 161 and the Waupaca High School Band for attending and participating in the program.

Gary Schwersinske sponsored a catered holiday lunch of Chicken for all the Pokers participants. We held a two day tournament and the winner was Gary Schwersinske , who also was awarded the trophy. Even “Steve the elf” got in the Holiday spirit.

Members had a great time at the DAV & Aux. Christmas party at the Marden MPR on Saturday December 21, 2019.

On December 14, over 7,000 wreaths were laid during Wreaths Across America at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Thanks to the dedicated work from American Legion Riders District 8 and every volunteer who showed up to honor and remember our veterans and their families.

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KINGChaplain’s Column

It’s New Year’s Day and I’m sitting in my daughter and son-in-law’s dining room looking out the window. The view is spectacular – evergreen trees laden with snow, glistening in the sun. It snowed several

days ago and the trees and landscape are still covered in white. It’s amazing how newly fallen snow transforms the scenery from dirty and drab to fresh and white. The view reminds me of the lyrics from the Christmas song Sleigh Ride – “It’s nearly like a picture print by Currier and Ives.” I am grateful that I live in Wisconsin where the beauty of snow is part of our annual winter experience.

Not only is snow beautiful and provides us with many winter activities – skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and others – but it also has a spiritual lesson to teach us. Isaiah, the Old Testament Prophet, writes about God’s forgiving grace and describes its transforming effect on our lives like fresh-fallen snow on the landscape. Speaking through the prophet, God says to His people, “Come now, let us reason together says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” [Isaiah 1:18].

Freshly fallen snow covers all the flaws and imperfections, all the dirt and filth on the land. The snow is a reminder of the goodness of God. The Lord tells us that if we come to Him in faith, He will take the sins, the shortcoming and failures that we have in our life, wash them away and cover us, making us as pure and as white as freshly fallen snow. “You, Lord, forgive the iniquity of your people and cover all their sins.” [Psalm 85:2]. What a beautiful picture of God’s forgiveness!

The Old Testament King David knew the meaning of these verses and found true grace in them and in God’s mercy. In Psalm 51, after he had sinned and fallen into adultery with Bathsheba, he wrote in a prayer to the Lord, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” [Psalm 51:7]. After turning in repentance and faith to God, David was blessed with God’s forgiveness. The prophet Nathan reassured David, “The Lord has put away your sin; you shall not die.” [2 Samuel 12:13]. David believed and accepted God’s forgiveness so he could move on with his life clean and renewed.

We have come to an end of another year and are moving into a New Year. In order to deal with the past and plan for the future, many people make New Year’s resolutions. But it’s difficult to move forward if

Folks, it looks like an article about Christmas wreaths, etc., will need to wait until another

time. This month there is something more important to tell you about so I hope you won’t mind too much.

I want to start this month’s article off talking about change. With the New Year coming faster than ever we are faced with new changes here at King. As many of you are aware Stordock Hall will be closing in 2020. All of the members and staff here will be moving into the other buildings here on the campus. I know everyone is nervous but as we get closer to that day we are looking forward to seeing what God has in store for all of us.

Right now I will be the last female on Stordock 4th Floor and will be moved on Friday, Dec. 13. I am moving to Ainsworth Hall; 3rd floor. They gave me a tour of third floor; Ainsworth last week. Wow! What a place! It’s the difference of night and day! Stordock Hall reminds me of a steady old, very tired, worn out building that has been serving faithfully for many, many years and will keep serving, if asked to do so because it is faithful and will do as asked. Ainsworth absolutely got my attention while making the rounds through it. This hall is clearly more like the five-star hotels I used to stay in all over the country as I traveled with my last career. A fabulous place!

Ainsworth first floor seems to have more specialties that I’ve seen so far. It is beautiful and the people seem to be so nice over there, too. Although I will miss those beautiful workers at Stordock there will be other very nice people to work with at Ainsworth so I am grateful. It seems there are lots of nice people in this entire Camp and I am pleased.

Sadly, it still means leaving the wonderful staff behind because they will be moving as well. They have become more like friends than caretakers. Some of the ladies are presently expecting and I am hoping I will get to meet their little ones when they arrive. I know with only three buildings for the ladies to go into I am bound to have some of my wonderful friends again.

Now, onto holiday news……My family enjoyed celebrating Thanksgiving right here in Stordock Hall. My kids and grand kids arranged the big room in the basement so we had a big, wide table with plenty of room for all of our tribe. It was so great! I can’t begin to mention all the food on that table but one thing I know; it was way too much for us to eat it all in one meal. The kids outdid themselves and made me so proud of them! And it was so nice that we could have a regular meal with all of us at the table right here so it wasn’t a problem getting me involved too.

This image of a young cowboy, who is a volunteer here at King, was taken 75 years ago in Mineral Wells, Texas where he and his mother were living in military housing. His dad, who had the rank of staff sergeant, was serving our country in the Army Air Force at Camp Wolters, just outside of Mineral Wells. Both of this young cowboy’s parents were residents here at the Veterans Home in King until their passing. His dad, who lived at Stordock Hall passed away in 1989, and his mother, who lived at MacArthur Hall, left our world in 2007.

we are troubled by the past. God is aware of our sins, our fears, our guilt, and our regrets. Though we are stained by our sins like deep scarlet and crimson dye, God says, “I will get rid of all that. I will take it away and make you as white as snow.” As we enter 2020 God wants us to know how amazing His love is and how great is His forgiveness.

Our recent celebration of Christmas has once again reminded and reassured us of how our cleansing comes about. St. Paul writes: “When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” [Titus 3:4-7].

I believe we have all enjoyed a landscape scene covered in snow, evergreens trimmed in white and trees and bushes glistening in the sunlight. At this time of year, in freshly fallen snow, God gives us a wonderful picture of His forgiveness. Turning to Him with hearts that trust in His forgiveness accomplished in the death and resurrection of Jesus, you and I can enjoy the cover of God’s forgiving grace and enter the New Year As White As Snow.

But I do have a serious complaint! As we were eating that fabulous meal Mike kept making comments about how tired I looked. At the end of the meal both Rob and Mike came beside me and took my arms and helped me onto my scooter, all the while I was hollering and protesting like our babies when they didn’t want to do something. Just like when Mothers win the battle, the boys did too. They escorted me up to my room and made sure that everything was okay, then back they went downstairs. Doesn’t that seem like a mean way to treat your Mom just because she is tired? I’m just teasing. Rob, Mike, Loni and Cindy take good care of me and they make me very happy.

Then the party continued for several hours while the family played games and visited. Doesn’t that sound like a pretty nice Thanksgiving? Of course, it started with a humble prayer of Thanksgiving because we have so much to be thankful for.

And we do have a lot to be so thankful for. Our family has welcomed about TEN new babies in our family in the past couple of years and we love each and every one of them. They are all growing and developing so quickly and we are so grateful! These babies are enough to make us grateful all by themselves. They are so special and so intelligent already. It will be fun to see what they do as they grow. Right now they are like a little circus!

A Promise to Kill by Eric Storey Clyde Barr, the drifter with lethal skills, is alone again, wandering the highways of the American West in search of something to believe in. As summer turns to autumn, he trades his car for a horse and heads for the mountains, planning to clear his head and regain his edge with some hunting. But when he runs across an elderly sick man—a Ute Indian from a nearby reservation—Clyde’s dream of solitude is quickly dashed.

On the reservation, Clyde finds the old man’s daughter, Lawana, and grandson, Taylor, as well as a group of menacing bikers called Reapers running wild in the economically depressed, half-abandoned village. Gripped by the desire to do good in a hard world, Clyde offers to stay on Lawana’s ranch to help out until her father is released from the hospital. He controls himself around the bikers, even when he sees them harass a few Native American women—but when the Reapers attack a local boy Clyde has to do something. As tensions rise between the locals and the Reapers, Clyde’s efforts to protect the reservation become a fight for his, Lawana’s, and Taylor’s lives. And then the stakes ratchet up even more. In the remote Utah desert, surrounded by enemies, with no law enforcement presence, and with communication effectively cut off, Clyde must find a way to save his new friends, defeat the gang, and, hopefully, escape with his own skin intact.

A Dog’s Way Home by W. Bruce Cameron Lucas Ray is shocked when an adorable puppy jumps out of an abandoned building and into his arms. Though the apartment he shares with his mother, a disabled veteran, doesn’t allow dogs, Lucas can’t resist taking Bella home. Bella is inexplicably drawn to Lucas, even if she doesn’t understand the necessity of games like No Barks. As it becomes more difficult to hide her from the neighbors, Lucas begins to sneak Bella into the VA where he works. There, Bella brings joy and comfort where it is needed most. After Bella is picked up by Animal Control because pit bulls are banned in Denver, Lucas has no choice but to send her to a foster home until he can figure out what to do. But Bella, distraught at the separation, doesn’t plan to wait. With four hundred miles of dangerous Colorado wilderness between her and her person, Bella sets off on a seemingly impossible and completely unforgettable adventure home.

Virtual Reality group. Tom Smith received a 300 in bowling on December 17th.
