LOGLINEA well-to-do 30-something man invites two rowdy young girls to party in his loft, leading to a night of provocation and cruelty, all in the name of getting laid.
SHORT SYNOPSISJoe, a well-to-do 30-something, encounters two rowdy young girls late one night outside a bar and impulsively invites them back to his loft. The three begin to party hard, and despite their age dif-ference they flirt with reckless abandon, each one eager to provoke the others. When it’s revealed that Joe has a girlfriend and that their relationship is on the rocks, the teasing becomes increasingly manic and destructive. As the night escalates, it becomes clear that Joe and the girls will go to great lengths to get their kicks.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENTThe Nymphets began as a story about the reckless activities we find ourselves caught up in at dif-ferent times in our life. My interests set me on a creative exploration through bad behaviors, gender and generational expectations, and the misguided attempts to find happiness. I had this idea that no matter how troubling the situation gets for my characters, the audience should have a good time. This perfect storm allowed me to play out a daydream, or nightmare, if you will.

Q&A WITH GARY GARDNERThe premise of the film is so audacious. Where did it come from?I was pretty wild as a teen, getting into my fair share of trouble. I started to consider what type of antics I’d be doing if I were a teenager today and all the ‘what-ifs’ started to snowball. What if I was a teenager? What if I was a teenage girl? What if all my great life decisions made me unhappy? And what if I wanted to blow it all up in one night?
It’d be interesting to hear a little bit about the rest of the journey, from when you started to write it to where it’s at now.I was working at a digital creative agency where I directed and produced adverts and branded con-tent for various global brands. I felt the sudden creep of mortality and thought if I died tomorrow, I’d be pretty disappointed in myself that I hadn’t made a movie and that all my ideas would be dead. So I quit the agency and started writing the script.
As most first time feature directors learn, nobody really cares if your movie gets made. I knew that if I wanted to make it, I’d have to do it myself. I basically went line by line in the budget and called all my filmmaking colleagues, friends and family, and pulled in all the favors I could. Next thing I knew, I was on set, actually making the film that had been in my head all this time.
Tonally, atmospherically, what were you interested in going for?I wanted to create a fun party vibe, with a hint that things might get super fucking dark. I love the idea of people having a good time even though they might be miserable. Movies should be an ex-perience, and a good movie always plays with audience expectations.
![Page 4: THE NYMPHETS - Quality American, Independentvisitfilms.com/media/product/Nymphets Press Kit small.pdf · LOGLINE A well-to-do 30-something man invites two rowdy young girls to party](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051721/5a7a0e5c7f8b9adf228cd694/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
There’s a lot of wild dangerous behavior in this movie… could you talk about that?I think it would be fool-hearted to avoid topics that are dangerous or destructive. For better or worse, these are all things people are doing. Exploring behavior without passing judgment is an en-lightening experience and I think many audience members will feel the same way when they view it.
What’s your take on the girls and the guy? Who’s good, who’s bad?I’ve had the most fun hearing people’s reactions to this topic. Some identify with a character and others point fingers at who bears the most responsibility. Personally, I’m a little bit of each character, so for me, they’re all good and perfect and well-adjusted people!
How did you create a movie that takes place primarily in one location without it getting boring?I tried to withhold as much information as I could from the start and took my time in revealing who these people are and what they were after. I also never used a proper establishing shot to reveal the location. As an audience, we’re not given any more information than the characters, so every time they learn something, we learn it with them.
Can you tell me about working with Academy Award® nominated artist J. Ralph for the song that was specially written for the film? How did that come about? He’s been a friend since forever. For years I’ve worked with him on a variety of projects. When I start-ed making this movie, he was quick to offer his support. As the film was taking shape, we sat down together and discussed the movie a bit. From there, J. Ralph provided the perfect song for the film.
