Dante Alighieri students visit Beijing sister schoolsfannie sunshine [email protected]

It was a curious sight for both the Dante Alighieri Academy students and their Beijing, China, counter-parts.

The 20 students, along with sev-eral staff from the North York school, took a trip to visit their two “sister schools” over March Break.

While they marvelled at both similarities and differences between Eastern and Western education, their presence also drummed up the interest of the Chinese students, who took pictures of Dante students snapping selfies.

“They were taking pictures of us taking pictures of ourselves,” said Sabrina Porretta.

The Grade 12 Dante student, along with 19 other students and three staff, including principal Flora Cifelli, spent 13 days in China, visit-ing sister schools Beijing No. 50 High School and Beijing Jiuxianqia No. 1 Middle School, along with taking in some cultural sightseeing.

The trip, which cost each partici-pant about $3,000, marked the first Toronto Catholic District School Board student visit to China.

It all started when Cifelli and two board superintendents visited China

last year as part of a delegation to meet school representatives there and build partnerships, she said. It was there Dante entered into two sister school agreements, in the form of social activities involving students from the three schools.

Cifelli, along with other members of the Dante community, welcomed 22 students from Beijing No. 50 High School in July. The students spent one week at Dante’s Beatrice campus for the Grade 9 summer school transition program, working alongside Dante’s incoming Grade 9 students.

Brothers and sisters

Earlier this month, it was Dante’s turn to visit their sister schools.

“It was a great experience,” Cifelli said, adding they spent four and a half days with the schools. “We felt we were welcomed and it was as if we were in our own school. We were treated as if we were brothers and sisters. Our students are still emailing and texting the students they met there.”

She said she believes the trip gave her students the opportunity to see a country they might not have been able to otherwise, and the chance to learn about other cultures.

“They saw how other kids are taught, what the school system is like, and this will give them a better understanding of our own (interna-tional) students,” Cifelli said, adding she hopes there will be future trips with students to China.

For Porretta, the 17-year-old said she’s always yearned to travel, so when the China trip presented itself she jumped at the chance.

“Even though there are differ-ences, there are similarities,” she said. “They are ready to learn, like us. They were so inviting and wel-coming.”

One thing she did note was the lack of multiculturalism, and the long hours students put into their studies.

The Dante students sat in on paper cutting and Chinese cal-ligraphy classes, she said, adding the Beijing students put on a piano concert for their visitors.

When they weren’t in the classroom, Dante students had a chance to visit the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall of China, and took a cable car up Mount Hua.

Grade 10 student Filipe Fiuza was having such a good time he didn’t want to leave. “It was amazing,” he said. “I’d love to go again.”

York’s Glendon Campus is a French language service providerYork University’s Glendon Campus is officially a French language service provider.

The provincial government granted York University partial des-ignation under the French Language Services Act last Wednesday. The partial designation formalizes the university’s commitment to provide francophone and bilingual educa-tion now and into the future.

“The bilingual nature of the Glendon campus makes it a key player in the development of the Francophone community in central and southwestern Ontario, where nearly half of French-speaking Ontarians will reside by 2020,” said Mamdouh Shoukri, York’s president and vice-chancellor in a release.

Some 700 francophone students attend the Glendon along with 2,000 francophiles who chose the campus in order to immerse themselves in a second language. Students choose from more than 20 undergraduate

programs, two professional pro-grams (education and translation), seven certificates and four master’s degree programs (in French studies, translation, conference interpret-ing and public and international affairs), as well as a PhD program in Francophone studies.

“Partial designation ensures that funding for French-language programs is protected, and York,

through Glendon, is committed to expanding those programs,” said York University’s Rhonda Lenton in a release, about Glendon’s official partial designation.

w mental health funding for York universitY

York University researchers have received almost $1 million in fund-ing for a mental health care virtual community for students.

The research team will receive more than $898,000 in funding and in-kind contributions from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and industry partners to research and develop support for the mental health needs of students through a Mindfulness Virtual Community.

Researchers believe more stu-dents may seek help online as many are reluctant to pursue in-person help because of the stigma associ-ated with mental health.

Money for transit, and possibly more for hous-ing. It was welcome news from Ottawa last week, when newly minted Finance Minister

Bill Morneau released the federal Liberal government’s first budget, and it included those two things.

Among other things, the budget pledged $3.4 billion in public transit investment across the country over the next three years. And an $11.9 billion infrastructure plan will allow for federal funding of housing.

Both of these announcements are good for Toronto, which needs major investment in both areas, and has for many years.

With the exception of the late former mayor Rob Ford, everyone occupying the Toronto mayor’s office has agreed that the federal government needs to engage in the direct financing of municipal needs – housing and transit in particular.

But mayoral advocacy has only ever achieved partial suc-cess, and often none at all.

Count this year’s budget as another partial win.

Toronto stands to get a size-able portion of the federal transit funding, as the allocation

will be based on ridership and the Toronto Transit Commission’s ridership is formidable.

But 26 per cent – the share that Mayor John Tory’s office estimates will come to the city on that basis – is still only $884 million. The Toronto Transit Commission’s state of good repair backlog currently sits at $2.7 billion.

Similarly, it’s hard to imagine federal infrastructure money, which will be divided more equitably, will get Toronto very far in completing the $2.6 billion repair backlog in Toronto Community Housing.

Will there be more money in future budgets? One might hope so, particularly as Prime Minister

Justin Trudeau and Morneau have signalled that they’re not going to be shy when it comes to running deficits higher than usual.

But we shouldn’t confuse hope with expectation, and Toronto needs to accept that it will be, at least to some degree, on its own – with maybe, just maybe, a bit more help from the cash-strapped provincial gov-ernment.

That means that later this year, when Toronto con-siders new revenue tools, councillors will need to look very seriously at the options. We’ve been given a boost. But we’ll have to climb the rest of the way ourselves.

We welcome budget boost

Federal Liberals make good on transit, housing

I’ve been thinking a lot about forgiveness lately.

Generally, the act of forgiv-ing is a healthy one. Carrying grudges, nursing old wounds, maintaining rifts is bad for the soul if you believe in that kind of thing, and for the digestion whether you do or don’t. It feels good to let go. But in the case of Robert Bruce Ford, interred yesterday after his untimely and awful death at age 46, forgiveness becomes… problematic.

It’s not that he didn’t beg our forgiveness.

When he was still mayor, before cancer struck him, Rob Ford offered a fulsome apology for the behaviour he exhibited while under the influence of his alcohol addiction. He went so far as to apologize on television, in the summer of 2014, where he accepted “full responsibil-ity” for his “poor judgement.” During that time, he’d been recorded saying an awful thing about his mayoral rival, city councillor Karen Stintz, and he apologized for that.

With that done, of course, he launched into an eyebrow-raising stump speech for his bid to be re-elected mayor then left without taking ques-tions. But still: an apology is an apology, and it’s only good manners to accept it.

And even if he hadn’t apologized, there is still the generosity we all feel toward the terminally ill. Imagining ourselves at a dying man’s bedside, a long-held grudge becomes an unimaginable burden.

And so it feels good for us to absolve: to recall Rob Ford as a good bloke after all, whose sins were egged on by the demon rum; to conclude that he was simply the mayor that loved Toronto too much; and that through it all, return-ing phone calls and posing for selfies, coaching grateful high school footballers and hobnobbing with celebrities, he somehow did great good

for the city. That this doesn’t square

with the historical record is problematic. Indeed, it is significantly problematic, as our consideration of the Ford years is not simply a matter of the historical record.

In addition to a widow and two children, Ford leaves behind a political machine, in the form of Ford Nation: tens of thousands of people who supported him unques-tioningly, and a political heir, in the form of his brother, former councillor Doug Ford.

Earlier this week, Doug was front-and-centre at the visita-tion that the family requested be held in the Toronto City Hall rotunda, greeting well-wishers, embracing support-ers, and posing for the selfies with those in line to visit his brother Rob’s flag-draped casket. We all grieve in differ-ent ways, but to onlookers, it seemed an awful lot like cam-paigning. And in the context of campaigning, the narra-tive of what really happened

between 2010 and 2014 in the mayor’s office matters.

The truth of that is that Rob Ford stepped off a well-run campaign and into a job that he bungled from nearly the beginning. At some point, booze and other drugs over-took him and made things worse.

But there is little evidence that he loved Toronto enough, never mind too much, and plenty of evidence that drunk or sober, he despised significant elements of the city. His accomplishments – abolishing the car tax and the contracting out of some garbage collection – are few. The damage he did – to public transit, to the simple level of discourse – is considerable.

And for that, and many other things, he never once apologized. As good as it might feel to grant, forgive-ness is really not an option.

The North York-based Toronto Aeros junior women’s hockey team have made the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) final four tournament.

It’s being held Friday to Sunday in Barrie.

Toronto earned a berth with a 3-1 minor upset of Oakville Jr. Hornets in the best-of-five, second-round series. Toronto finished fifth in the 20-team league and Oakville fourth - both had 55 points in the 38-game regular season schedule.

Toronto will now have to pull off some more upsets as the Top 3 seeds have also made it to Barrie including first-place Durham West Lightning, second-place Whitby Wolves and third-place Mississauga Chiefs.

The tournament format has each team playing each other once in round robin action on Friday and Saturday.

On Sunday, the Top 2 teams then face off for the gold medal, the bott-tom two teams for bronze.

OJHL

In men’s junior hockey, the North York Rangers bowed out of their second-round best-of-seven series with the Georgetown Raiders 4-2.

North York won the opening two games of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) series but then lost four straight.

- Norm Nelson

Seneca College has secured its first national curling title.

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) curling cham-pionships were hosted by London’s Fanshawe College March 23 to 26 with the Seneca Sting women’s team winning the national title 8-4 over the hosts.

Members of the team, who also won the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) title, are Kim Headley, Courtney Mabee, Kendra Pierce, Stephanie Vanhuyse and coach Peter Cadorin.

The Sting scored two in the third end following a pair of blank ends.

The turning point in the game occured in the fourth end when the Sting stole four to take a command-ing 6-0 lead.

From there, the Sting stayed composed and forced the Falcons to run out of rocks to capture the gold medal.

The Sting only dropped one game at the tournament (their second round robin game) for an overall 6-1 record.

Crescent School students homeCrescent School students and teach-ers who were stranded in Brussels following terrorists attacks in that country last Tuesday are back in Toronto.

A group of nine students and two teachers from the private all-boys school was heading back to Toronto from an outreach trip to India when their plane landed in Brussels for a layover but was prevented from taking off again by the terrorist explosions.

The group managed to land in Toronto late last Thursday.

“Air Canada bused our group, as well as other stranded Canadians, from Brussels to Paris Wednesday afternoon, then flew them Paris-Montreal that evening at no charge,” Colin Lowndes, deputy headmaster, said in an email Monday.

The last Air Canada flight to Toronto was full, but Porter airlines stepped up and flew the students back at no charge.

“The group arrived tired but in good spirits at Billy Bishop Airport at about 10:45 p.m. Thursday eve-ning.”

w access legal aid division at osgoode hall

Jane and Finch residents dealing with employment law issues can now access a new Legal Aid divi-sion at Osgoode Hall Law School geared towards that service.

The Community Legal Aid Services Program (CLASP) at York University’s Osgoode Hall now offers a one-year pilot project employment law division.

w north York resident receives award

North York resident Rev. Rauni Salminen, co-founder and CEO

of Emily’s House, Toronto’s first and only pediatric palliative care hospice, was recognized by the Order of Saint Lazarus with a prestigious Member of Merit award.

Salminen, who is also the head of the Philip Aziz Centre for Hospice Care, was recognized by the order, which is one of the most ancient Orders of Chivalry dating back to 1098 A.D. The rec-ognition is for her leadership and vision in hospice palliative care.

Salminen received the award specifically for bringing to life her dream of building Toronto’s first pediatric hospice, Emily’s House, which opened just less than three years ago in Riverdale.

The services for children with complex, terminal illnesses provided at the six-bed facility are endorsed by the SickKids Advanced Care Team as well as the Community Care Access Centre, community clinicians and agencies.

They include respite care for families with a seriously ill child, pain and symptom management, and acute end of life and bereave-ment care.

Hearing tests are provided free of charge for adults ages 18 and older. Some conditionsmay apply. Please see clinic for details.

Similar to choosing between contact lensesor glasses, you can decide with your hearingprofessional which hearing aid style wouldbest suit you. Both styles have approximately thsame performance and functions, but are fittedthe ear differently.

It’s almost a shamethis technology isn’tmore visible!

Open-fit and IIC hearing aids are smaller andmore sophisticated than ever, striking the perfect balance betweensize and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, andthe thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid–now withwireless technology–provides all of the outstanding features and benefits youwant in a digital hearing aid, minusthe stigma that camewith wearing one in the past.

CALLNOW - Candidates are being selected. The selection process for this test periodwill endMarch 31, 2016.

Call us toll-free today at one of the numbers below to see if you qualify for this Field Test. Potentialcandidates will be given a FREE hearing test to determine candidacy.
