Time to enter the tunnel! We’ve had a good, long dose of Epiphany joy this year, but it’s time to prepare to enter the long tunnel of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 26, when we’ll begin 40 days of fasting, prayer and introspection. Tunnel driving has always been fascinating to me. In our home state of Colorado, you drive west out of Denver on Interstate 70 and to get to the western slope of the Rocky Mountains from the eastern slope, one has to speed through the Eisenhower Tunnel, a well-lit, easily-navigated tube of concrete. The signs in the tunnel warn you: Don’t change lanes and maintain a constant speed. In Boston and other East Coast cities, one can tunnel-drive under water to get from one part of the city to another. Imagine: under water! Ah, tunnels are wonderful things. The Lenten Tunnel is a straight shot from Epiphany’s busy, mission-oriented action to Easter’s heady joy. It invites us to focus on that darker side of living that we would too often avoid as we traverse the landscape of life. Within its darkness we will encounter the injustice of death, the cruelty of human beings one to another and the ever-present repercussions of sin, our ages-old alienation from God and one another. The instructions are similar to driving the Eisenhower Tunnel: “Don’t change lanes and maintain a constant speed.” If this tunnel is to be effective for us, the Lenten journey should be 40 days of reflection, prayer and giving up ourselves to God. Your church is prepared to accompany you on the journey. In addition to Sunday services of a more somber nature, our Wednesdays (6:30 p.m.) and Thursdays (10:30 a.m.) will offer midweek worship set in a courtroom in which the various characters in the passion story are “convicted.” Make that a part of your tunnel travel this Lent! It could get a bit dark in the tunnel. Lent is like that. But the beauty of driving through the Eisenhower Tunnel is that exuberant blast of light that you know is waiting as you emerge. You reach for the sunglasses, take a deep breath and the endless vista of the Rockies stretches before you, as you travel westward. It’s called “Easter” in the language of the Church, and that too will come gloriously this year on April 12 and beyond. Those who drive the tunnel know what awaits them, which always fills the trip with hope. Ready or not, here comes Lent. Time for “Tunnel Vision.” Pastor Donald Hinchey, Winter Pastor

From the Winter Pastor’s Desk:

Tunnel Vision Ready or not, here comes Lent! Time to enter the tunnel!

We’ve had a good, long dose of Epiphany joy this year, but it’s time to

prepare to enter the long tunnel of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 26, when we’ll

begin 40 days of fasting, prayer and introspection.

Tunnel driving has always been fascinating to me. In our home state of

Colorado, you drive west out of Denver on Interstate 70 and to get to the western

slope of the Rocky Mountains from the eastern slope, one has to speed through the

Eisenhower Tunnel, a well-lit, easily-navigated tube of concrete. The signs in the

tunnel warn you: Don’t change lanes and maintain a constant speed.

In Boston and other East Coast cities, one can tunnel-drive under water to

get from one part of the city to another. Imagine: under water! Ah, tunnels are

wonderful things.

The Lenten Tunnel is a straight shot from Epiphany’s busy, mission-oriented

action to Easter’s heady joy. It invites us to focus on that darker side of living that

we would too often avoid as we traverse the landscape of life. Within its darkness we

will encounter the injustice of death, the cruelty of human beings one to another and

the ever-present repercussions of sin, our ages-old alienation from God and one

another. The instructions are similar to driving the Eisenhower Tunnel: “Don’t

change lanes and maintain a constant speed.” If this tunnel is to be effective for us,

the Lenten journey should be 40 days of reflection, prayer and giving up ourselves

to God.

Your church is prepared to accompany you on the journey. In addition to

Sunday services of a more somber nature, our Wednesdays (6:30 p.m.) and

Thursdays (10:30 a.m.) will offer midweek worship set in a courtroom in which the

various characters in the passion story are “convicted.” Make that a part of your

tunnel travel this Lent!

It could get a bit dark in the tunnel. Lent is like that. But the beauty of

driving through the Eisenhower Tunnel is that exuberant blast of light that you know

is waiting as you emerge. You reach for the sunglasses, take a deep breath and the

endless vista of the Rockies stretches before you, as

you travel westward. It’s called “Easter” in the

language of the Church, and that too will come

gloriously this year on April 12 and beyond. Those

who drive the tunnel know what awaits them, which

always fills the trip with hope.

Ready or not, here comes Lent. Time for

“Tunnel Vision.”

Men's Bible Breakfast moves

to new locaon The Men's Bible Breakfast will continue its study of the Old Testament hero David in a new location when it meets on Saturday, Feb. 8.

The monthly second Saturday class has outgrown space available during Season at The Grind Coffeehouse near Zion. So the group will shift to Zion's Room 108, just off the East Entrance to the Atrium.

"Facing Challenges as a Godly Man: David" is the topic, currently focusing on 1 Samuel 16. Discussion in February will begin by looking at what it means for our anxious world that God

sets boundaries over the forces of evil.

Breakfast will be available at 8 am, with the study starting at 8:30 am. Bob Goodman will host a continental breakfast of bagels, spreads, pastry, fruit, coffee and orange juice.

All men in the congregation and community are welcome.

Pastor Hank Simon leads the hour-long discussion, which looks at the text, considers background which helps explain the story, then moves to resulting questions and connections about living as a follower of Jesus in 2020.

Questions? Contact Bob Goodman ([email protected]).

MIDWEEK LENTEN MEALS FOR

YOU AND MISSIONS!!!

Midweek Lenten Meals are being

planned on Wednesday nights this year

FOR YOU!!! We hope you will join us

from 5:30-6:15 p.m. each week for

fellowship, a chance to get to know our

snowbirds and a convenient delicious

meal. Meals will be served in the

Fellowship Hall. Each week the meal

planners will designate a mission

project for the freewill offering taken at

the meal. Each Sunday the location and

menus for the following Wednesday's

dinner will be in the bulletin. On Ash

Wednesday is a roast pork dinner

served by Brothers in Christ. March 4

our Fellowship Committee will be

providing a salad bar.

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are in need of meal planners, cooks and servers for meals on March 11, 18 and 25 and April 1. If your group or a 2-3 individuals or couples would like to plan a meal, we’d be delighted! Please contact Margaret Hinchey (303-667-5671) or the church office if you are willing!

LENT BEGINS ON ASH WEDNESDAY,

FEBRUARY 26

Join us for Ash Wednesday services the last

week in February as we begin our Lenten

journey. We will have worship on

Wednesday night, February 26, at 6:30 p.m.

and Thursday, February 27, at 10:30 a.m.

Both services will include imposition of ashes

as well as Holy Communion. Our midweek

Lenten theme this year will be “Convicted.”

Each week a different Biblical person is put

on trial accused of a 21st century crime. The

congregation gets to be the jury. Plan now

to make midweek worship part of your

Lenten walk this year.

A supper will be served each week from

5:30-6:15 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall before

the service. On Ash Wednesday our

Brothers in Christ will be serving a meal and

if it’s anything like last year, you won’t want

to miss it! On Thursdays (except for Ash

Thursday) during Lent, the Adult Group

(TAG) Bible study continues with Pastor

Hinchey in Room 108.

Have a Heart

February: the month devoted to love.

Stores are filled with heart-shaped boxes of candy

and heart-shaped cards and vases of flowers with

heart-shaped gi) tags. All this is available for the

consumer so that he can find the appropriate

expression of his devo+on to his loved one. If that

expression of love has been preceded by a year of

though-ul and loving words and deeds, it is

welcomed and cherished by the recipient. If not, it

is just an empty ritual, done out of duty rather than

true devo+on.

Our rela+onship to the Lord is similar. He,

too, desires our sincere devo+on, not empty lip

service. “The Lord says: ‘These people come near to

Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from Me’ ” (Isaiah 29:13).

Stewardship is serving, helping, giving, but

love is the basis for stewardship. Without love, our

good deeds are empty and without merit. The first

act of true stewardship is to “love the Lord your God

with all your heart and with all your soul and with

all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5). Jesus called

this the most important commandment (Mark

12:29, 30). With that love for the Lord in us, we are

enabled to be good stewards. Then we can do acts

of good stewardship, acts of true devo+on. We are

enabled to . . .

“Give generously to Him and do so without a

grudging heart” (Deuteronomy 15:10).

“Carefully observe [His decrees and laws] with all

your heart and with all your soul” (Deuteronomy

26:16).

“Share with God’s people who are in need. Prac(ce

hospitality” (Romans 12:13).

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as

working for the Lord, not for men” (Colossians 3:23).

God, through Ezekiel, promised, “I will give

you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will

remove from you your heart of stone and give you a

heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit in you and

move you to follow My decrees and be careful to

keep My laws” (Ezekiel 36:26-27). This promise He

has fulfilled in His Son, Jesus, Who has followed His

Father’s decrees and kept His laws for us. As we

strive to live frui-ul lives of stewardship, at the

same +me, we rest in Christ who has been the

perfect steward for us.

Stewarding Ministry

DO YOU HAVE A MUSICAL GIFT TO SHARE?

As the interim music director at Zion, I am

interested in scheduling singers or

instrumentalists for Sunday and Lenten Midweek

worship at Zion through May. If you could offer a

vocal solo or small group or play an instrument,

please give me a call at 303-667-5671. I can

accompany either a vocal or instrumental solo or

small groups and would be happy to prac+ce with

you. God has given many of us talents which can

edify our worship! Let us know what gi) is yours!

Tuesday Bible men's class explores 'distorted images'

The Brothers in Christ men's Bible class will continue a study on "Distorted Images of Self" as it meets twice in February.

The topic looks at ways we think and feel about ourselves, moving to how this impacts our relationships with others, and especially the God who loves us.

Otto Kunst will lead a session on "Forgotten Versus Remembered," starting at 10 am

Tuesday, Feb. 4 in Room 108. The topic will focus on Genesis 16, the story of Abraham's first-born son -- who was not Isaac -- and the mother of that child, Hagar.

Larry Ives will moderate discussion on "Insignificant Versus Significant" in a session beginning at 10 am Tuesday, Feb. 18 in Room 108. This topic is based on the Beatitudes (sayings of Jesus about who is "blessed") in Matthew 5:1-10, 14-16.

Grab a cup of coffee or tea and a pastry, then join us for some spiritual nourishment. Contact Denny Bowers ([email protected] or 239-945-7105) if questions.

Brothers in Christ meet for Bible study at 10 am on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, then share in fellowship over breakfast at an area restaurant at 9 am on the fourth Tuesday.

Zion offers Weekend Worship Two-fer

Zion now offers a Weekend Worship Two-fer.

On one weekend, you can come to two different services which both proclaim the Good News of Jesus and respond with praise and thanksgiving.

That's the result of the launch on Jan. 11 of Oasis, our new "come as you are" contemporary worship service in the fellowship hall at 5 pm Saturdays.

Oasis differs from the Sunday services by having a different theme, preacher and sermon, different songs and musicians (a praise band), different worship style (informal contemporary in a relaxed setting) and different worship space (fellowship hall).

For example: on Jan. 11 and Jan. 12, Pastor Curtis preached on Saturday at Oasis and Pastor Don preached on Sunday in the sanctuary services.

A rotation of preachers (including both of them and others) will take turns presenting the message in topical sermon series at Oasis. Feb. 1 marks the final of four messages on how we are "Blessed" in unexpected ways.

Upcoming worship themes are listed on the Oasis page on the Zion website (Zionfm.org).

As of the printing of this newsletter, attendance for the first two Saturday services averaged more than 100 worshipers. Oasis is scheduled to run for a 14-week trial period, which ends April 11, Easter weekend.

At least one Zion member is attending both Saturday night and Sunday morning worship frequently. She wants to enjoy Zion's Weekend

Worship Two-fer.

No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another God abides in us and his love is perfected in us

2020 Oberammergau Passion Play & the Best of the Holy Land June 19 – 30, 2020

Pastor Curtis and Jo Ann were just informed a few weeks ago that a few more spaces were added to their tour group. They had run out of Passion Play tickets and the tour was closed. But now they have had some extra tickets released and have made them available to our tour group. Pastor Curtis hopes to expand to a group size of about 20 to 25. If you decide to come, you will not only you get to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau (performed every 10 years) but you will also see many parts of the Holy Land where Jesus Himself walked on this earth. As an added bonus, the trip will end with several days in southern Germany and Austria exploring castles and churches. Pastor and Jo Ann invite you to join them for this once in a lifetime trip. The information and registration forms are found at the welcome center in the narthex. If you have any questions please contact Pastor Curtis or Jo Ann.

“Parish Nurse Notes” by Lynda Hagman, PhD, RN

Thank you so much for the day of

celebraon, cards, well wishes, and

gracious gi@s. It has been my joy to serve

Zion Lutheran Church as its Parish Nurse for

the last four years. I have had the privilege

of working with and assisng many of you

with various health and life issues. The Lord

always gave us a way to deal with those

issues and for that I am truly grateful. I

believe He has a person in mind to be your

Parish Nurse. I will keep in touch. Blessings

to you all.

Always Your Sister in Christ,

Lynda W. Hagman, PhD, RN, Parish Nurse

In Exodus Chapter 16, we read of the fascinating

account of God literally raining down bread from heaven!

This is a tremendous reminder for us today of how our

great God provides “daily bread” for his people.

Well, I have never found any manna on my lawn in the

morning, but I still constantly marvel at how God

continues to provide for His people and for His church. A

great example of that is an awesome new resource

called http://heartfeltgiving.net/.

Heartfelt Giving has given over $52,000 to Lutheran

churches and charities over the last 3 years.

Now Zion has the opportunity to receive cash back

from Heartfeltgiving!

Here’s how it works! Many of us are already shopping

online at name-brand stores and travel centers and

receiving nothing back for doing so. Now, with http://

heartfeltgiving.net/, we can get cash for our church with

every online purchase we make!

Since the average family spends enough online to bring

back to their church about $102 per year, a church with

100 families would generate over $10,000 for ministries

in their church every year! Larger churches (and those

with schools or preschools) would generate even more.

Zion Lutheran has registered with Heartfelt Giving for

FREE!

And now Zion has its own online shopping mall.

You can get to our mall through our own unique web

address at

heartfeltgiving.net/np14

You must go through this web address in order to

benefit Zion!

First, you type in the above web address and go to the Heartfelt Giving website and you will see our name Zion Lutheran Church near the top of the page. This means you are in our online mall. Now, let’s say you want to shop online at the Walmart store. So, you look through the stores on the site until you find the Walmart store and then click on their logo. You will then be directed to their site and you just simply do your online shopping like you always do. The prices are the same when you go through our shopping mall on the Heartfelt Giving website as they are if you were to go directly to that site. The only difference is that when you go shopping online through our shopping mall, using Zion’s personal website address, then our church will get a percentage of what we spend sent back to our church! So now you can shop online and at the same time benefit our church. What a great stewardship opportunity we have been blessed with.

Zion Zoups Our kitchen will be busy in February: Split pea, beef barley and lemon rice

zoup on February 9, and it will be ready for pick up on February 16. Please

note the date changes. Suggested donation is $5 per quart. A shout of

thanks goes to Thrivent Financial for their support in this fundraiser.

Our Thursday Adult Group will be applying funds realized to help reduce Zion’s mortgage

liability.

February Newsletter Article The married couple were both faithful in participating in everything in their local congregation. Every time the lights were on, they were there. They were without children and by all appearance, very modest in the assets they had. In reality, this couple had been so careful about the stewardship of their gifts, that by the time the Lord called them home, they had hundreds of thousands of dollars in their estate. 95% of it went to support ministry when their earthly life was complete. What a blessing to their home congregation and other ministries across the country. We get so preoccupied with paying bills and facilitating family needs that we often overlook that the Lord is giving us opportunity throughout our earthly life to create and grow accumulation of assets that can be directed to ministry long after we are no longer here. Maybe that is the best kind of giving, when credit isn’t the goal, but faithful support of Gospel sharing is. Just as you have opened a saving account for vacations, or Christmas, or a college fund for children’s education, or a retirement account, have you ever considered creating a “fund” for the future support of ministry? How would you do that? Maybe you set aside part of an inheritance you receive. Maybe you designate a percentage of your estate to the Lord’s work. Maybe you consider endowing your weekly offering to the Lord, directing money from your estate to a personal endowment that will keep on supporting your favorite ministry just as if you were still here writing the check. There are many ways to respond. The appropriate plan is the one facilitated by the gifts the Lord has provided in your life. Your LCMS Foundation Gift Planning Counselor can help you think, pray and plan toward a gift the Lord has enabled from before the foundation of the world. For more information, contact Jim Pennington, Zion Gift Planning Counselor, at 863-370-0305 or [email protected].

Gentle/Chair Yoga January - March 2020

Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines movement, controlled breathing, and meditation/relaxation. The integrative health approach of a regular yoga practice creates mental clarity and calmness; increases body awareness; relieves chronic stress patterns; relaxes the mind; centers attention; and sharpens concentration.

Chair Yoga is a gentle form of yoga for men and women of all ages that can be done sitting on a chair or standing on the mat while using the chair as support. We will reach, bend, and twist using a variety of movements designed to increase flexibility, build strength, and improve balance.

Class Times:

Mondays & Wednesdays 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Where: Fellowship Hall, Zion Lutheran Church

Cost: $20/month for Members

$30/month for Non-Members

What do I bring?

(a) Yoga Mat (I recommend one that is 1/4” thick)

(b) A Curious Mind

I know you will be amazed with how your body and mind will respond to these movements and how calm you will feel after each class.

If you have questions, comments, or concerns, you can reach out to me at [email protected]

See you… on the chair and on the mat.
