Thanks to everyone who helped make the 11th Annual Louisville Blues-n-Barbecue Festival a huge success. Close to 15,000 people attended the three-day event at the water tower and with the exception of a slight interruption from Mother Nature on Saturday night the event went off without a hitch. Festival season has switched into high gear with several blues fests on the horizon including the Cincy Blues Festival (August 1 and 2), the Madison Ribberfest (August 15 and 16), Ken Lake's Hot August Blues Festival (August 22 and 23) and the Kentucky Blues Festival in Bowling Green (August 22 and 23) hosted by our brother blues society to the south the Kentucky Blues Society. In September and October we have the Bean Blossom Blues Festival (September 4 to 6), Blues to the Point in Car-rollton, KY (September 4 and 5) and the Garvin Gate Blues Festival (October 10 and 11).

Stevie Ray's Blues Bar has been host to several outstanding national blues acts recently and more are to come. Murali Coryell brought his soul-blues show to Stevie Ray's on July 8 and after several sets even stuck around and played with the blues jammers after his show. At one point as musicians were changing positions on the stage he even took a turn at drums. The evening ended with a fiery jam that included Coryell, John Burgard, Mike Lynch,

Gene Wickliffe, Jack Hurley and “Big Poppa” Stampley. On Monday, July 14, Albert Castiglia (pronounced Ca-steel-lia) had the house jumping with his excellent guitar work and promises to return in the near future. The month of August continues the run at Stevie Ray's with John Nemeth (August 3), Stacy Mitchhart (August 13) and Watermelon Slim (August 25).

Just a reminder that August 29 is the deadline to apply for this year’s annual blues contests. We are hosting both a band and solo/duo competition for the 2009 International Blues Challenge. See the ad in this issue of Blues News and apply on-line at kbsblues.org. The Blues Foundation has announced that they are again accepting applications for the Best Self-Produced CD of the year. The KBS has the right to nominate a CD for this award. If you are interested please send a copy of your CD to us at the Kentuckiana Blues Society, PO Box 755, Louisville, KY 40201 by Wednesday, October 1. The CD must have been released after November 1, 2007. A KBS com-mittee will pick the best CD for this competition and the winning entry must provide a total of four CD's to send to Memphis by Novem-ber 1. If you have any questions please contact me at 502/724-9971.

The Kentucky Center is again offering prime seat locations for next years' Joe Bonamassa show to KBS members. Bonamassa will be performing on Friday, March 6 in the Bomhard Theater. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, August 15 at 10 am. How-ever, if you call or visit the Kentucky Center box office on Thursday, August 14 between 10 am and 6 pm, you can buy tickets before they go on sale to the general public. The box office phone number is 584-7777. Be sure to provide the promo code word GUITAR. Purchase just two more shows for the 2008/2009 season and save 15%.

The Kentuckiana Blues Society Myspace page is finally up and running thanks to some assistance from Paul Moffett at the Louisville Music News. I consider myself fairly computer savvy but I could not get it to work until Paul let me know what I was doing wrong. How-ever that has been corrected and you can visit our page at www.myspace.com/kbsblues. We already have over 60 “friends” and are looking for more.

It is my sad duty to report the death of Donald “Ike” Harris on Wednesday, June 25 at the age of 68. The Don Harris R&B Band had become a Friday night staple at Zena's Cafe for the last few years. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. If you wish to leave a personal message of condolence you can do so on-line at the Courier-Journal obituary section. (http://www.legacy.com/louisville/GB/GuestbookView.aspx?PersonId=112571894.) Don's band will continue to play at Zena's on Friday nights so you can also stop by, pay your respects and show them your support.

4 BLUES NEWS August 2008

When Bernard Allison (the headliner) hit the stage, the night air got infused with S-O-U-L! Dressed in a white sports suit, wield-ing his weapon of choice: the guitar--he came onstage with an excellent crew of musicians, the drummer (Erick Ballard) was abound with energy and smacked the skins with the utmost precision, the fantastic keyboard player/co-writer from Jonny Lang's band (Bruce McCabe) and a great bongo player had the audience up and off their feet the entire show.

Allison's performance was an energetic funk cocktail with a garnish of blues and soul.

On the song, "My Guitar and Me" from his newest cd entitled, "Chills & Thrills", he walked out in the audience brandishing a big smile and delighted the audience with his slide guitar riffs. The groove of that song made it irresistible not to get up and dance! That song is probably my favorite from the cd. Its the perfect combo of blues and funk.

He was in the crowd for quite a while, stopping at various points & jamming with the closest participants. He stopped in front of me and I could not help but smile back & dance to the solo. People were standing on their tiptoes trying to get a look at him.

Most people did not stop dancing the entire show! He also performed a slower song, "Serious" also from the new cd, and a rock tune called, "When I'm Gone", and "Black and White", among others. Bernard also showcased his love of rock as well, doing a melody of Jimmy Hendrix, Ted Nugent, and Def Leppard among others.

He did reference his father, Luther Allison, a couple of times and smiled when speaking of him. I purchased his cd which he autographed and took his time talking with his fans.

Bernard Allison has a friendly persona about him, and I really enjoyed his show!

The cd is fabulous with a mixture of funk, blues, and rock.

2008 Chicago Blues Festival Celebrating 25 Years

Every year my wife and I become blues lemmings. We rush north before the second week in June to the shores of Lake Michigan, where the Chicago Blues Festival is held in Grant Park. We immerse ourselves in four days of music on six stages. Over the past 25 years, we have survived each one. Below are some pictures and impressions of our blues blur.

Keith Clements and Peggy Hyland

Louisiana Red’s lyrics can be political, pitiful and poetic.

Piano C. Red was a regular, performing on Maxwell Street. This survivor of shootings and strokes played ‘Flat Foot Boogie’ with a little help from Ice Mike on guitar.

Sharde Thomas, the granddaughter of Otha Turner, carries on his tradition with the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band. My favorite blues face to photograph is Pine-

top Perkins who is 95 years young. He was backed by an all star band of Bob Margolin, Bob Stroger and Willie Smith.

The pairing of James Cotton and a frail but energized Johnny Win-ter brought back memories of their 1977 tour with Muddy Waters.

The dynamic duo of Lightnin’ Malcolm and Cedric Burnside (grandson of R.L.) showed that the North Mississippi blues is alive and well.

I had never heard of L.C. Ulmer until this festival with his one man show of Mississippi and Texas style of country blues.

Sam Lay has switched from drums to guitar and preserves Chicago blues traditions.

What a surprise to see Little Willie Little-field back from Holland to pound the ivories and boogie with the crowd.

7 BLUES NEWS August 2008

This blue blues bus used to be parked in the Maxwell Street Market where you could hear it a block away and buy tapes.

Otis Taylor, accompanied by John Richardson, explored the deep haunting mysteries of the blues.

Louis Jordan was born 100 years ago and he was paid tribute with a nice set by Duke Robillard and Red Holloway.

Eddie ‘The Chief’ Clearwater will blow your tail feathers off when he plays October 11 at the Garvin Gate Blues Fest.

The ‘Queen of the Blues’ KoKo Taylor hosted her bus tour on Saturday night to Captain Hard Times, The Rockin’ Horse and Lee’s Unleaded Blues.

Jimmy Johnson could sing in the choir or on the corner and his tenor voice would preach the blues.

No female singer today has more sass than the diminutive Sugar Pie DeSanto.

The gritty guitar and the gravelly voice of Magic Slim are unmistakable.

There are legends and there is the Master, B.B. King, who closed the festival on a high note.

9 BLUES NEWS August 2008

It was sad to learn of the passing of Harry Lewman on July 8. He was only fifty eight. He had been suffering from a rare blood disease that very few knew about. Harry was not one to complain.

I got to know Harry when he was on the Board of Directors of the Kentuckiana Blues Society from April 1994 to February 1997. He was the authority on Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly). Harry could play Leadbelly’s songs impeccably note for note on his twelve string guitar. Harry didn’t have Leadbelly’s deep resonant voice but he did his best in his own way. Harry’s mother, Cordelia, told me the story of when the lyrics and transcriptions of thirty one of Leadbelly’s songs were going to be published. Harry read and played the notes and found them wrong. He contacted the publisher and the pub-lisher asked Harry to come to New York and work with them to make it right. Hence the book “Lead Belly, No Stranger to the Blues” was published with Harry’s important contribution.

Harry became acquainted with members of Leadbelly’s family including Tiny Robinson, the niece of Leadbelly’s wife, Martha. Tiny had looked after her uncle’s business interests and funeral service in 1949. In August 2002 Harry and Tiny appeared together at the Port Townsend Blues Festival in Washington with Harry performing and Tiny sharing her memories. Harry’s only CD, “Gonna Be The Death of You” was released in 1998. He paid tribute to Leadbelly and other twelve string pioneers like Barbecue Bob and Blind Willie McTell plus a brief interview with Tiny.

After Linda Cushing passed away in February 2001, Harry and Dan Colon resurrected the Wednesday open stage jams at Air Devil’s Inn. Harry and his then wife, Claire, opened their home to a House Concert in December 2001. They hosted a memorable evening of traditional Piedmont and Delta blues by Paul Geremia.

During the visitation at Pearson’s Funeral Home, Jimmy Brown and I exchanged some memories of Harry. Jimmy, who plays bass with Bodeco, said that lead guitarist, Ricky Feathers, wanted to have some sitar music to open their show at the Pour Haus on May 31. Jimmy remembered that Harry was getting interested in the music of Ravi Shankar and had started playing the sitar. On short notice Harry agreed to open provided he had a young lady go through the motions dancing to the ethereal string music. Jimmy said it was quite an eye opener for the crowd who came for just some raw rock and roll.

I will always remember Harry as a kind, gentle soul who was devoted to his particular niche in the blues. He can be proud of his son, Curtis, who carries on the tradition of playing guitar in several jazz and fusion groups.

So long Harry. “Hello Central, Give Me A Long Distance Phone.”
