Number 16
16th May 2014
Dear parent,
It has been another busy two weeks in school. Year 1 children visited Prudhoe Castle in two groups.
Although the weather last Friday wasn’t as good as we had hoped it would be, the children still
enjoyed their visit. Many thanks to the staff for organising the visit.
Class 8 and parents visited Hylton Castle last Saturday morning. Mrs Green arranged for a guide
from an English heritage background to speak to the children. Sadly, the weather again was the
problem, but the children certainly enjoyed this visit.
We are very pleased to be able to tell you that the school boilers , heating and hot water systems
will be replaced during the 6 weeks holiday. We have secured funding from EFA to enable this work
to happen. The boilers are 25+ years old and currently, only two of the six are working at capacity.
This will certainly improve the heating in nursery, where a domestic boiler needed to be installed
when the nursery was built. This work will mean school will be completely closed for the first 4
weeks of the holiday.
In September, we will be using the small classroom in the extension to provide a base for a fourth
teacher to extend our provision for the children currently in year 1. Although they will remain in
their existing classes, an additional teacher will provide smaller group teaching in literacy and
numeracy and specific topic work in other subject areas throughout next year.
We all enjoyed class 7 and class 8’s first assemblies, recognising how much they have progressed in
their first year at school. They were so confident as they told us about sea life/sharks and
castles—their chosen class themes at the moment. Well done to them all...

In cookery club this week,
we made chocolate cup
cakes...
After school bakery club made
bread buns this week. The smell
was delicious and we all were
very tempted to taste the
finished product. Mrs Colclough
has added the photographs to
their recipe books.

As the summer term progresses we
have been spoilt this week with
lovely weather. ! Please remember
to apply sun cream to your child and
provide a sun hat on sunny days.
Sun cream (named) can be sent in
to school. If necessary, the
youngest children will be guided into
applying it by their class team! We
have lots of shade available, but if
the weather is too hot, children will
remain indoors.

Year 1 classes visited Prudhoe
Castle this week. Two trips by
coach were enjoyed by the
children. The castle, in a beautiful
setting enabled the children to
witness first hand key aspects of a
castle—the moat, the keep,
battlements etc. Can you work out
who the battle is between? (left)

Mrs Green, Mrs Cowley and 17 children and Mum’s
and Dad’s braved the weather on Saturday
morning to visit Hylton castle. Thankfully, the
weather was warm and the sun shone as they
enjoyed discovering and exploring the second
oldest building in Sunderland.
Mrs Green, Mrs Cowley and
Mum’s and Dad’s for making
this trip possible.
