1 The Examiner The Newsletter of Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church, Richmond, VA April 2016 At their March meeting, Congregation Council received the recommendation report from the Long Range Planning Team and adopted a new mission statement and logo for Epiphany Lutheran Church. The congregation will hear more about the long-range plans in the upcoming months, but the new mission statement and logo are ready to be introduced now, and we are excited to do so! After many months of prayer, Bible study, and discussion about the vision for this congregation, we believe the following mission statement best describes who we are and what God calls us to do. Because we are Epiphany Lutheran Church, we found inspiration for this mission statement in the story of the magi in Matthew 2: The mission statement and the new logo (to the left) are intended speak to each other. Designed by two graphic design students at VCU, the new logo will be featured on our letterhead, our bulletins, the website, and other publications. The color version is midnight blue and white, and it comes with various iterations we can manipulate and position as needed. The path in the logo represents the “Walk the Journey” aspect of our mission. We are people on a journey of faith. The path is not straight, consistent, or always seen; rather the path has ups and downs, disappears from view, takes turns and is both narrow and wide. Lenoir-Rhyne University concert experience a great one!
It takes many people to pull off hosting a college touring
choir, and Epiphany rose to the occasion. Those who
ushered, those who prepared and served dinner, those
who hosted and those who attended the marvelous
concert all made this a memorable experience for those
choir members. Thank you for sharing your time to
make it possible!

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR SINGING SAINTS – BOTH “RETIRED” AND CURRENT
On April 3, Epiphany will have the fortune of a large children's
choir from Trinity Lutheran in Lansdale, Pennsylvania joining us
for worship at the 11am service. They are in Richmond for a
conference/retreat on Saturday and have asked to be a part of our
worship on Sunday. As part of that, they will be singing a song
that many of our past and present Saints have participated in -
Tunaomba! They have asked us to join them for this
anthem. Even the older gang is welcome as there are
opportunities for some percussion involvement (older is fine guys
and girls - even I might be playing!).

Baskets for Hunger
A new event is coming to Epiphany on Sunday, April 10 directly after the 11am
service. We have enjoyed raising support for the Malaria Campaign in the past for the
ELCA. One of the other focuses for the ELCA is World Hunger. We will be shooting
baskets to raise funds for this much needed appeal. So practice your free throw shots
and check out the signup/fundraising sheets on the Welcome Desk in the Commons.

COME CHEER ON TEAM EPIPHANY
One of the country’s largest 10K races is held right here in
Richmond down Monument Avenue on April 9, 2016. The
Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K presented by Martins is a
wonderful community event that gives you the opportunity to
volunteer, run, walk or just watch! Our team of walkers and
runners has been working hard in preparation for this race.
Come on down and watch them and cheer on your favorite
runners and walkers!

Faith Formation
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL -SURF SHACK
CATCH THE AMAZING WAVE OF GOD’S LOVE
July 18-22, 2016 ~ 8:45 am—12:00 Noon
Have you signed up to attend or volunteer for our daytime VBS? We are looking
for some “surfers” ages 3 through rising 5th graders to join us as we discover how
to surf through life with God and others! We will hear the stories of creation,
Miriam caring for Moses on the Nile, the baptism of Jesus, Jesus calming the storm, and a breakfast on the
beach. The adventure includes energizing music, interactive Bible fun, cool crafts, delicious snacks, great
games and more!
VOLUNTEERS WANTED! Youth who are r ising 6th graders and older can volunteer to help out
during the week with our surfer groups or our activity sites. Adults, too, are needed to join in the fun as
leaders for our surfer groups and activity sites.

EVERY BODY VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL—EGYPT
Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace
July 31-August 4, 2016 ~ 5:30 pm—7:30 pm (dinner included)
It’s the family vacation of a lifetime! Bring your entire family to ancient
Egypt! You’ll travel back into Bible times—without setting foot outside our
community. Each day, your family members can become part of history as
they see, hear, touch, and even taste what it was like to live in Pharaoh's empire! You’ll explore authentic
Marketplace shops, visit Joseph (who’s in Pharaoh's prison...then gets promoted to Pharaoh's palace), and
sample tasty tidbits as you discover more about how God was with Joseph in good times and bad. These
experiences make God’s word come alive with new meaning for all who participate.

Adult Faith Formation
Sunday Morning Offering—9:45 am
The Reformation We Lutherans are creatures of The
Reformation. Next year will be the 500th anniversary of the
Augustinian monk, Martin Luther nailing on the church
door at Wittenberg the 95 theses that are generally accepted
as the start of the Reformation.
How much do we know about the Reformation?
How did those other protestant churches such as the
Methodists or Presbyterians get started?
How did those who left the Catholic Church to join these
new denominations gain the name Protestant?
Who was Huldrych Zwingli? Luther and Zwingli agreed on
almost everything except the meaning of communion. How
many of us will find that when we hear the difference
between Luther and Zwingli over the communion that our
own beliefs are more Zwinglian than Lutheran?
What do we know about John Calvin or John Knox? Why did Henry VIII of England take his nation out of the
Catholic Church and what denomination replaced the Catholic church and was that new church really
Protestant? These and many other questions will be answered by the adult Sunday School class on The
Reformation which continues through May. Join us!
Tuesday Morning & Wednesday Evening
The Parables Join us as we renew our study of Jesus’ parables. The Tuesday
morning study meets at 10:30 am and the Wednesday evening study meets at 6:30 pm
in the Chapel.
Thursday Morning
Moms’ Bible Study Join us Thursday mornings in the Chapel. The nursery opens
at 9:15 am and discussion starts at 9:30 am. This month we start a new discussion
based on Lysa TerKeurst’s Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw
Emotions .

LAMB’s BASKET
Thanks to the congregation for their generous response to LAMB’s Basket this past food drive. There was a
total of 883 pounds of food and $585 donated in this drive. We are reaching 185 households a month. For
those of you that have time during the month, LAMB’s Basket has need of volunteers to sort incoming
groceries or help with distribution. If you have a pick-up truck we need drivers to help get the food from
grocery stores contributing to our food pantry.

Epiphany sends volunteers each month to the
Community Food Pantry to help distribute food
(Fridays) and stock the shelves (Wednesdays).

information, call the pantry at 565.8007.

closings, or if Henrico schools are closed, then
LAMB’s Basket is closed.
LAMB’s BASKET FOOD PANTRY
Time Commitment: 3.5hours/day
Micah 6:8 - ‘walk humbly, love kindness, do justice’
Micah is an association of faith communities in metropolitan Richmond
committed to working with the students, teachers and staff of Richmond Public
Schools. Epiphany is one of those 125 faith communities. Our partner school is
Southampton Elementary where several members of Epiphany have been
volunteering weekly in the classrooms. Our congregation has shown support in
other ways, most recently for a “Dr. Seuss Birthday” celebration on March 2nd.
Students in kindergarten through second grade came to the activities room to
select a book of their choice, for “free,” to take home. The books, donated by our
members, found smiling owners!
The Micah Association has four meetings during the school year to share experiences and to hear special
speakers. The location for the spring meeting this May 12th is EPIPHANY LUTHERAN. The program
begins with lunch at noon and continues with a focus on Southampton Elementary School and comments by
Mrs. Crews, Principal. We are delighted to host this program and invite anyone in the congregation to attend.

Community Service Ministry
THE HHOPE MINISTRY TEAM
Shoppers We are looking for 1 or 2 people to be the "What Not" shoppers. These shoppers would pick up miscellaneous
items from Dollar Tree or other discount stores. Someone else will take an inventory and let you know what
needs to be picked up for the next distribution. Shop when it's convenient for you and submit your receipts for
reimbursement.
Saturday Teams We are also looking for 3 teams of 2 people to oversee 7-8 distributions throughout the year. These teams
would help create a schedule so that it was convenient for you and your teammate. Of course, training is
available. So, grab your spouse, a friend, or the person sitting next to you in the pew, and come learn more
about HHOPE and how you can help serve those in our community.
Volunteers The HHOPE ministry team always welcomes people to join our team.
...We (about 10 of us) distribute food to our guests on the second and fourth Saturdays (9:30am)
of the month.
...We (about 5-7 of us) set up and prepare the bags on the Friday night (6pm) before a distribution.
...We meet the first Tuesday (7pm) of every month to discuss upcoming distributions.
Food Drive HHOPE's next Food Drive is in April 3-24. Please bring in your donations and share with others in our
community.
Tour and Workshop Also in April, join us at 6:30pm on Wednesday, April 13 in the Narthex for a tour of the pantry and a no-
pressure info session/workshop. You can learn more about our pantry and test out the waters without getting
wet!

to 95 area children in need this Easter. Thank you to the
many who helped to make this possible.

Nursery School News
March was a great month here at ELNS! We had a
birthday party for Dr. Seuss on March 2 in the Upper
Room and a wonderful time was had by all! The
children loved having The Story Lady, Ali Pfautz,
come and read a Dr. Seuss book and tell some her own
stories. You can check out our Facebook page to see
photos of the event. The truffula trees we decorated
with were moved to the hallway downstairs to brighten
up our walls – I hope you all have gotten to see them
this month.
Also in March we saw our winter enrichment classes
of soccer, art and dance end and our spring sessions of
Outdoor Adventures, Soccer Shots, and Wee Little
Arts have begun. We also had two days off of school for our teachers and staff to attend an early childhood education
conference here in Richmond to learn about new strategies to use in the classroom, new activities for art, music, science,
math, handwriting, and other subjects, and other useful early childhood information. It was great to get to reenergize and
continue to be lifetime learners.

summer-camp/. Our first week is May 30 – June 3 with an Outer Space theme and the second week is June 6-9 with a
Robots and Engineering theme. If you have a child ages 2-6 that would like to come, make sure you register them early.
The rates will go up on April 15.
Spaces for attending ELNS for the 2016-2017 school year are filling fast! We are already on waiting lists in some rooms.

WEDNESDAY EVENING MEALS
Beginning April 13, all are welcome to join us for food, fellowship, and faith
each Wednesday beginning with dinner in Price Hall at 5:45 pm. Choir
rehearsals, Bible Studies, and Confirmation classes are offered.
Suggested donations for the evening meal are $5/adult and $3/child 12 and
under. Household max is $20.00.

GIDEON GREETING CARDS
Gideon greeting cards, located in the narthex, enable you to dedicate Bibles in the memory of loved ones and
friends who have died, in honor of special occasions such as a birth, baptism, confirmation, graduation, or
other times when someone you know is in need of special prayer. A $5 investment will put a Bible in that
person’s name within arm’s reach of a world that desperately needs to know the good news of our Lord Jesus.
Each Bible placed by the Gideons in hotel rooms around the country has the potential of reaching 2,300
readers during its six-year service period. Easy to follow instructions for this program are contained in the
Gideon greeting cards found in the narthex. The Gideons in our area ask that you please consider this
thoughtful and precious gift as situations present themselves. If you have any questions about the Gideons
and Gideon greeting cards, please speak to Matt Greenshields.

KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS ARISE!!!
Are you interested in working on a ministry that allows people to be wrapped in the warmth of God's Love.
If you are, providing Prayer Shawls is the answer. Please let me know if you would like to be a part of this
group blessing of the spirit that will be able to bring inner strength to those in need.

for start-up. Lessons will also be offered.
EPIPHANY FREEBIRDS
Epiphany Freebirds is a new group for those whose nest has just emptied,
been emptied for a while or has always been empty. Both singles and
couples are welcome. We will meet once a month for fun and fellowship.
Please join us Saturday, April 16th for a bike ride on the Capital Trail,
weather permitting. We will meet at 2803 Dock Street at 1:00 pm. Bring
your bike (and helmet) and we will decide that day how many miles we want
to ride. If you don’t have a bike try to borrow one. If anyone is interested in
walking that is fine too. After our ride maybe we can head over to
Conch Republic for appetizers and a drink.

The Clara Sullivan Circle will meet Wednesday, Apr il 13, at the home of Bettie
Baecher at 10:00 a.m. We will be discussing the upcoming WELCA convention and the

ATTENTION WOMEN OF EPIPHANY
At the June 14th luncheon we will elect a Delegate and an Alternate to represent Epiphany at
the 2016 VSWO Convention which will be held at Epiphany August 5-6. Be ready with your nominations.
We will be needing lots of volunteers to make everything work smoothly. Contact Sophie Wilson at

Mark your calendars now to come to the VSWO convention. We want a big attendance from Epiphany since it
will be another 4 or 5 years before it is held this close to us. WE NEED YOU TO BE THERE.

April 4, 1957 - Church Council approved a motion to "devote at least fifteen minutes at the beginning of each
Council Meeting to a devotional service and study". These devotions were to be supervised by the Chairman
of the Christian Service Committee.
