As you begin your second mandate as President, how do you assess your 39 months at the head of the Club and its positive deve- lopment during such time? It is firstly because of the continued hard work and enthusiasm of my entire team that today the Club reflects all the traditional values of rugby. Secondly a real effort was put into the training of our coaches and volunteers. At the same time we have also been motiva- ted by the enjoyment of our young players and by the success of our senior team. We believe strongly in the educational values of rugby and therefore are doing what we can to attract youngsters to this great sport. I must also mention our partners who have been with us since we were planning the re-development of the Club - and I believe they are satisfied to have helped make it possible. The Club’s development reflects the approach of the various corporate partners – generous and successful. Having said this we know that the road is long and many challenges lie ahead before we can achieve all of our objectives. AS Monaco Rugby is now able to field a team in each category. How do you manage this huge increase in the number of registe- red players ? Once again through the commitment of our volunteers and the ca- reful management (which can be complex) of the facilities made available to us by the Monaco Education Authorities and the muni- cipalities of Cap d’Ail, Beausoleil and La Turbie. I thank all of them for their understanding and support. We have also recruited new coaches, of which several originate from our senior team, which demonstrates the Club spirit and which I am particularly proud of. The new season is notable for the inauguration of the new sta- dium at Blausasc which will be used by AS Monaco Rugby. Will this provide the players with improved facilities ? It is a major event in the long history of our Club. The seniors will train and play their home matches on the new pitch and we will also be able to organize matches for the cadets and juniors there. In addition this year the Rugby School tournament (featuring our 200 young rugby lovers) and possibly other events will be held there. I congratulate our friends from Blausasc who have made this high quality investment, with the latest generation artificial surface. S.A.S. Princess Charlene has become the patron of the Club. AS Monaco Rugby is experien-cing a true re-birth, launched 4 years ago by your prede-cessor Aldo Belmonte. As you begin your second mandate as President, how do you assess your 39 months at the head of the Club and its positive deve-lopment during such time?

It is firstly because of the continued hard work and enthusiasm of my entire team that today the Club reflects all the traditional values of rugby. Secondly a real effort was put into the training of our coaches and volunteers. At the same time we have also been motiva-ted by the enjoyment of our young players and by the success of our senior team.

How do you manage this huge increase in the number of registe-red players ?

Once again through the commitment of our volunteers and the ca-reful management (which can be complex) of the facilities made

available to us by the Monaco Education Authorities and the muni-cipalities of Cap d’Ail, Beausoleil and La Turbie. I thank all of them for their understanding and support. We have also recruited new coaches, of which several originate from our senior team, which demonstrates the Club spirit and which I am particularly proud of.

The new season is notable for the inauguration of the new sta-dium at Blausasc which will be used by AS Monaco Rugby. Will this provide the players with improved facilities ?

It is a major event in the long history of our Club. The seniors will train and play their home matches on the new pitch and we will also be able to organize matches for the cadets and juniors there. In addition this year the Rugby School tournament (featuring our 200 young rugby lovers) and possibly other events will be held there.I congratulate our friends from Blausasc who have made this high quality investment, with the latest generation artificial surface.

S.A.S. Princess Charlene has become the patron of the Club. How was this achieved ?

This is simply fantastic. In fact we raised this idea – or should I say dream – with S.A.S. Prince Albert II during an awards evening for ASM omnisport. We discussed the (then) future Princess’ eminently sporty nature, Her special attention to kids, and of course Her country of origin where rugby is a lot more than just a sport. At the Prince’s suggestion we formalized our request and the Princess honoured us by Her favou-rable response. This was made official in June this year when S.A.S. Princess Charlene visited the Rugby School during a training session. Her warmth and enthusiasm left the youngsters with stars in their eyes, and a unanimous determination around me to do everything we can to be worthy of this honour. > next p.2

AS Monaco Rugby is an organization of dedicated and passionate rugby lovers which functions with a five strong Board led by the Club President, and a Managing Committee of 14 members where the various responsibilities are addressed by different sub-commit-tees.

While the first team remains the flagship of AS Monaco Rugby, the Club will enter teams in all categories for the new season.

The cost of a playing licence is €120 for the Rugby School and the youth categories (Cadets and Juniors) and €180 for the seniors. This amount includes insurance, the ASM licence and a contribution for shorts, socks, tunic and t-shirt.

next > After this look back at recent events, tell us one wish for the future.

It may seem paradoxical, but despite everything that has been achieved over the last 4 years, the hardest is yet to come. We have to build on what we have done, our structures and our organization – you can not grow from 50 members to 348 without solid foundations. We need to bring new partners to the Club, and find new players who adhere to our amateur policy, which is rare in the region. We need to find employment for our coaches and players, either with the ROC partners or elsewhere. Especially I wish the Club to continue to display a dynamic and rigorous image of our sport, with irreproachable behaviour both on and off the field.I am sure we will succeed since we are a true team with a true passion. Michel Lottier, Mayor of Blausasc – can you please tell us a bit more about this rugby “adventure” with AS Monaco Rugby?

With my Town Council, we wanted to construct a new stadium with the latest generation artificial turf at the same time as developing another sport in addition to football, so that the youngsters from our valley can flourish playing a sport that was not present locally up to now. That’s why we thought of renewing the link between our commune and the Principality of Monaco, which dates back to the 1700s.

The red and white colours of our coat of arms is proof of our shared history, and thanks to rugby we are going to line up together for several years. AS Monaco Rugby, through its experience, know-how and management skills, is bound to bring a high quality new sporting activity to our village. The posts are now proudly erected and waiting for the Monaco rugby players to arrive – we wish them a great season, on a real pitch, which the Club has been waiting for for 48 years : the Blausasc residents will give them the traditional rousing welcome !

Guillaume, in a few words please present the ROC to our readers:

The ROC (Rock Oval Club) is the club of the partners of ASM.A Club like ours needs to be surrounded and supported by quality partners representing the economical fabric of the Principality.

Created during the 2010 season, the ROC already numbers around 20 members (variety of companies), and we have the objective to raise this to around 50 for the coming season.

2010 /2011 was a notable year thanks to several key events for the ROC, such as the big screen projection of the Rugby World Cup matches in a beachside location at Larvotto, with facilities able to welcome comfortably our partners and their clients.A highlight of the 2010 season for the ROC was the trip to Toulouse for the semi final of the Top 14. Around 30 members made the trip,

proudly sporting our Club colours and I have to say that we did not go unnoticed ! Monaco is a name known by all and always attracts people’s curiosity. The stock phrase of the weekend was “Yes we play rugby in Monaco too” and we see the ROC having a key role in trans-mitting this message as widely as we can.

What are the plans for the ROC for this new season ?

Like last year we plan to organize around 10 social events, plus a trip to Ireland corresponding to the 2013 VI Nations tournament.

A calendar of the events will be published in September. Our first event will of course coincide with the inauguration of ASM Rugby’s new stadium at Blausasc on 8 September 2012.
