presIdenT’s Message

It was an honor to be your Acting Editor over the past few months. The EFMLS News will be in better hands now that Mary Bateman is taking over. Thanks in advance, Mary.

It's been a busy Summer! You can probably tell as you're gleaning through this edition, but it's not gonna stop. We are rolling out new and different benefits almost on a monthly basis.

"Change"

A new website, a new news outlet, a new field trip program and most importantly, some great new people to make it all happen for you our valued affiliates! We need to hear from our affiliates! That's you! Change can only be effective if we fulfill your needs. So, I ask you all, please let us know how we can help you and your organizations. You are paying to belong to the Federation and I want you to get your money's worth.

One way you can help your organization, your Federation and your Region- please consider becoming and instrument of "change." We need Regional Vice Presidents, Area Managers and Committee Chairs. I would like to give a special thanks to our Web Ad Hoc Committee; Heather Shields -OCMS, Christine Conlon -SEMMC, Bill Stephens -DMS, Mitch Portnoy -NYMC and Alison & John Pacut -MHVG&MS for their generous time and dedication! Always Sincerely,

Congratulations to Thom Noble of the The Gem & Mineral Society of Lynchburg!

EOTO, Each One Teach One Award

The results are in! EOTO Trophy mailed out to a wonderful recipient of the Each One Teach One Award for 2018. And the winner is….drum roll occurring in the background… Thom Noble, Lynchburg VA Club

Steve Gordon is the President and I'm sure he is as proud of Thom, as are we and Linda Noble. Linda actually nominated Thom, and who better than his wife who sees all the extra work that he has done for his club!! He is an awesome cab cutter and loves to teach others this skill. A true teacher; Thom "appreciates the opportunity to see the reactions of students showing off their creations." Anyone who has ever taught knows that is one of the best parts. The Federation congratulates Thom for his wonderful work and sharing his talent.

Please keep in mind, we would like to award the trophy to someone in your club, but you have to help me out by nominating someone and telling me why they deserve it. Who teaches, helps, goes out and spreads the love ofour hobby!

At the 2019 Convention, the Meeting Delegates and the Executive Board voted to approve funding for a new website. An Ad Hoc Committee was to be formed (now formed) to obtain a minimum of 3 Requests For Proposals to choose a web design/hosting company. The Board will then vote to approve the vendor based on the Committee's recommendation. Due to the lack of security of the amfed.org server, we moved most of the relevant content to the EFMLS.org domain and used the domain host's platform tools to build/add featured resources and launch new Federation Programs. Much more functionality and responsivity is scheduled for the FINAL site we're planning to launch later this year. We are currently taking proposals from web development/hosting companies, so if anyone out there in Easternland has/knows a web company and would like to submit a proposal, please contact Committee Chair:Bill Stephens; 302 540 3453, [email protected] Deadline for proposal submission is 9/15/19

This is not our FINAL site!!!!!!!!Why? Because... you've waited too long and you most definitely deserve something even better!

SHOWS

The EFMLS is continuing toexplore different ways we

can assist our family ofAffiliate Societies andtheir field trip needs.

The reality is clear. Most Mineral Societies need help in almost every aspect of their field collecting opportunities. The primary concern of course is access. We are developing a multi-tiered approach to try to help with the many issues surrounding field collecting. This includes multiple programs.

The Eastern FieldsA New Column About All Things In Eastern's

Field Programs

When we work together, we can expand our opportunities to increase access to places for field collection. When sites close or are no longer available to us, our hobby loses and we do as well, as individuals. When are we going to join forces and put forth a concerted effort to stop the decline? And, what if we were to be proactive in common, to find new or previously "closed" sites? The Federation will be forming a Council to understand the challenges of limited access as well other issues related to your local field programs. This may be a monumental task but when we think of the rewards, is it worth it? (the proverbial "crickets" are deafening!) When you decide to become a part of this solution... please email: efmlsinc at gmail dot com

Ever heard of AmLands or ALAA?

The American Lands Access Association (Part of the AFMS), is an activist group that exists to help and fight for all those interested in gaining access to and preserving collecting localities.

Consider having your Society join AmLands and join a national movement!

AmLands.org

5 eFmls news --September 2019

AmLands is often seen as Western US interested group. How wrong this perceptions is! Hundreds of areas in the Eastern US are owned by public agencies (mainly government) and this is why this is important to all of us and we are not immune to public lands issues on which we collect.

Ever ask, what if our local or regional government agencies decide to stop allowing us access to collect on public lands?

The EFMLS is a proud member!

This just in.... A Joint Federation Field Trip has just been announced to include Eastern in the Southeast Federation's Field Trip to Graves Mountain, GA the first weekend in November ....stay tuned!!!

we can't wait to return the favor!

Club Spotlight - Southeast Massachussetts Mineral Club

by Christine ConlonSEMMC -

SEMMC is situated (as the name implies) on the South Shore of Massachusetts about halfway between Boston & Plymouth, with a

to young people in the Earth Sciences program. Our meetings are held monthly on the second Thursday evening, September through June. We hold a club picnic in July & a Christmas party in December. Our club is active

On August 10th, in conjunction with the Boston Mineral Club, many members went to the Eastern States Gem & Mineral Show, what a long day! We hold an annual mineral auction on the 3rd Saturday of March & we are already in the process of bringing that event together for 2020. 2019 was the most successful auction to date & we’re planning for 2020 to surpass it! We already have some beautiful pieces for that event & are in the process of acquiring

incorporation. There are plans to commemorate this date which have not yet been finalized. We are calling on our members to submit their photos of past events & we are culling important historic information from the paper files which were turned over when I took office. Our Vice President is interested in compiling a photo album for this purpose. He also maintains the club’s FB page, with updates on meetings, events & photos.

I am the newly elected Treasurer of the club & our President, John Walsh (seen at left), charged me with modernizing the club’s record holdings. This is a monumental task because we have about 50 years’ worth of paper records that I am in the process of scanning & uploading to Dropbox so that these documents are available for our officers to review. We have developed a retention policy that will be implemented as soon as the drudge work has been completed. As part of our efforts to modernize the club, we have launched a new member management platform by the name of

keep our membership records in good order & where our members can update their profiles, upload club related photos, make donations & chat together. The phone app is particularly helpful as each member can carry their electronic member ID card with them at all times & there is a listing of upcoming events.

It is a fairly comprehensive platform able to

Many of our members have been with the club for much of the club’s history. I, however, am an outlier! My husband Alan Holmes is the current Vice President & has been a member for 6 or so years, but I just joined last year. I don’t collect gems for the same reason as most rockhounds, I create semiprecious gemstone bead prayer / meditation aids & jewelry & use them in metaphysical healing. I am just as avid a collector as any of you who are reading this, but I hope for folks to wear or use my creations differently than most collectors would. I have been working closely with David Nock & the EFMLS since I began with the club & look forward to a better association

between SEMMC & EFMLS in the future.

varying membership of 100 to 150 members. We meet at Bridgewater university which is the recipient of our two $1000 annual scholarships

particularly in the warmer weather with field trips to many of the New England states, often two or more tripseach month. During the winter months we may have a trip to a museum which has a good collection of specimens.

more specimens, catalogueing, photographing, etc. Can’t get started on this process too soon. We are coming up on the 50th anniversary of SEMMC’s

Who's the person in your Region that helps you the most?Question?

Helps you, your organization, and your fellow Societies near you?An Answer!

"Gosh, well, the clubs in my area all meet at different times not that nearby. I remember this lady or maybe it was a guy who came and said something about the Federation is here to help? I think it was at our show." -Respondent requested his (I mean her) anonymity-

The Answer.... Your Regional Vice President (RVP) Your Federation, your Region, your Society and YOU! Yes YOU! Have a consultant (the EMFLS Regional Vice President) to help you with what you want to get out of your interests in your Society or Club! Email, call, text them your questions, ideas, issues or whatever. (They are probably going to hate me for saying this but go ahead and bug the hell out of them)

The EFMLS hopes this may have piqued your....interes..something! So that you will take an interest in the regular process of our upcoming ELECTION of the:

Regions 1, 3, 5, and 7 Regional Vice Presidents for 2019 - 2021

If you reside in the regions we are holding this election (see efmls.org) and would like to nominate yourself (don't be bashful) or someone you know, please email: efmlsinc at gmail dot com. We'd be thrilled to send you the section of the OPs Manual describing the duties of the position.

do you have to use these fonts? REALLY?

We can't have a future without your input!

IMPORTANT NOTE: All nominations for Regional Vice President in the respective regions, can be submitted to the Official E F M L S Communications address: [email protected] Thank you!

The Eastern Federation is also needing Area Representatives/Managers to help with our Regional Programs. If you or anyone you know is interested, please reach out to us at the email address above!

The nomination period is Open. Nominations now accepted from9/1/19 - 9/30/19, for the RVP Positions in Regions 1, 3, 5 & 7.

This is a 2 year

Magnetism & Art

I was lucky enough to obtain a flat of Magnetite at a Rock Swap, inspiring another lesson for our Pups (Pebble Pups)! I also have a bunch of decent magnets, so I gave each Pup one and we researched how and why they have this interesting property. Then they got a specimen of their own and using both as a base; created a sculpture! I had a box full of nails, paper clips, screws, metal scraps, etc, and they were to pick out a few at a time and build. They enjoyed finding out how "contagious magnetism” can be.

I explained how a sculpture could be realistic (like a real subject), semi abstract (kind of looks like the subject) or totally abstract (just interesting!). If we had enough time, we could discuss the sculptures, but sometimes they just want to keep on working! They were given the ore to take home and create on their own, and add it to their collection (with the warning to keep it away from electronics!!

INSURANCE Update

As you all are aware, the EFMLS conducts an ongoing review of our current policies for our affiliate members insurance needs on a yearly basis. As we approach our Annual Review in the near future and select the best policies for our affiliates, we would very much appreciate your feedback on the current policies to asses your needs. Please let us know if they are satisfactory.

As outlined in the current EFMLS Operating Procedures, the Federation will conduct an annual review by the Insurance Committee and make the determination if our Affiliate's needs are met.

Go to efmls.org to view our current Insurance Policy

At this time, for the coming contract year, 2019 - 2020, we are not anticipating any or a significant increase in our insurance premiums.

However, if the needs and policy rates change, we will consult with you and let you know the options that will best suit all of our needs.

Please NOTE: !!!!!!It has been brought up by you (our affiliates), that our current policies may not reflect the current landscape for insurance needs in our hobby. This is also our current reality!

Based on the inquiries we've received, Your Federation will investigate to have our policy limits increased to satisfy recent land owner requirements for additional insurance.
