  • The new Volvo 264.For particular people. When we built this car, we had a

clear idea in our minds of the kind ofperson who'd buy it.

A person who asks more of a carthat that it should get him from A to B.

A person who wants a car with adiscernible style yet will not compro-mise on safety or reliability.

A person who expects to get a carwith flair, superb comfort and good

performance for his money; yet de-mands a measure of economy.

A person who is looking for a carthat lasts and holds its value well.

Such a person, you might say, isimpossible to please.

We think not.In our opinion the new Volvo 264

meets all these searching requirements. After looking at the cad we think

    you'll agree.

  • The new Volvo 264 retains all the best features ofits predecessors.

"The safety cage" around the passengercompartment is one example, as are the triangle-split brake system with disc brakes all round, andthe safe location of the fuel tank.

To this can be added the brand-new, quietlyrunning, all aluminium V6-engine with twin over-head camshafts, the choice of two new gearboxes,

Volvo264 DLThe six-cylinder Volvo represents everything onecan expect of a car in this class.

  • the brand-new front wheel suspension, the exten-sively improved rear wheel suspension, new wheelswith steel braced radial ply tyres, a newly styledinterior and much more which gives superb comfort,a low level of noise and excellent road holding forsafer driving and trouble-free car ownership. Thenew Volvo 264 is available in two versions - both ofwhich have a 12 month warranty irrespective ofmileage.

For the motorist who wants more comfort andelegance, the Volvo 264 GL is finished to thehighest standards.

    Volvo264 GL

  • inside the Volvo 264 you'll becomfortably off.

To us the driver and passenger comfort is so impor-tant that it is a question for doctors, safety expertsand car designers working in unison.

Take the driving seat, for example. As far ascreature comforts are concerned, it's the most im-portant place in a car. Since each human is shapeddifferently from the next, we first make sure thateveryone can sit comfortably. That's why the frontseats in a Volvo incorporate a wide range of adjust-ments. They have a 7.8" range front-to-rear whilethe backrest reclines from upright to nearly flat. Seatheight and rake is also adjustable. And to keep yourback comfortable, there's an adjustable lumbarsupport.

The automatically heated cushion and back-rest of the driving seat in the GL-model is anotherexample of exclusive Volvo comfort. You'll bewarm and cosy after only a few minutes driving ifthe temperature is below 14 ° C. Research has shownthat a cold uncomfortable driver is not a safedriver.

On the 1975 Volvos, the seats have beenredesigned and have integral head restraints. Theseat padding is also somewhat firmer to improvecomfort on long runs.

The strong framework of these seats and theirsecure anchorage to the floor mean that they canwithstand extremely heavy stresses which is saferboth for the front seat occupants as well ass those inthe back.

Other features necessary to a safe and enjoy-able car are a low level of noise, a pleasant tempera-ture and perfect ventilation. This is why the newVolvo 264 has been given special treatment toquieten the interior. Ample use of new' insulatingmaterials cuts the noise of tyres, engine and trans-mission to a subdued whisper. The sound-absorbingroof lining and the wall-to-wall fire-resistant car-peting are added touches which give the Volvo 264an air of chauffeur-driven detachment.

In the Volvo 264 you can achieve just theright climate. Its ultra-efficient heating and ventila-tion system has no less than twelve different airnozzles. The temperature setting you choose isthermostatically-controlled to make sure it stays asyou like it. And there's a sliding steel sunroof foradded pleasure.

You can enjoy the supreme independence offull air-conditioning, standard on the Volvo 264GL, while on the 264 DL it can be supplied as anoptional extra.

The new Volvo 264 has a highly efficient heating and ventilationsystem of the through-flow type designed to cope with extremes ofweather. There are four adjustable nozzles on the dashboard whichyou can set from fully open to tight closed in any direction youwant.

Luxury is the hallmark of the new Volvo 264 which embraces theultimate in spaciousness, comfort and safety, making driving a realpleasure. With the foldaway armrest down, the back seat providescomfort for two - rarely, if ever, surpassed. The DL-versions havecloth upholstery while the even finer Volvo 264 GL comes witheither plush or leather-faced seats. Both versions feature a slidingsteel sunroof.

  • This dashboard of the new Volvo 264. Impressively designed, yet stilla vital safety item. The heavy crash padding is sufficiently firm andsubstantial to provide the 'give "needed in an accident. The hub ofthe steering wheel is wide and flat for the same reason.

The new front suspension is one reason why the 264 has such goodroad holding. A trial drive will show you what we mean.

  • The new front suspension meansmore than added comfort.

Volvo comfort means more than just sitting comfortably and safely;an ergonomically-correct driving position is every bit as important. This means that the driver can see and reach every one of the con-trols and instruments without stretching and that the ones he usesmost are immediately to hand. The new steering wheel angle is oneengineering change based on this principle. It not only gives a betterdriving position, it also provides more room and facilitates easierentry and exit.

Utterly predictable road holding is vital to safetyand this was the objective set to Volvo designers.

The Volvo 264 has an entirely new front end.The front suspension is of the spring strut typewhich gives a smoother ride and irons out even theworst of roads. Front and rear stabilizers giveprecise cornering and less roll. The wider track setsthe front wheels farther apart on their steel bracedradial ply tyres, giving added stability. Anotherappreciable change is the new location of the rearaxle support arms which are now further outboard, closer to the wheels. It's difficult to describe inwords the way this superb car feels and acts. So trythe new Volvo 264 yourself, and form your ownopinion.

Wherever you drive the Volvo 264 you willsoon appreciate the new power-assisted rack andpinion steering and how it improves directionalstability and steering response. The car is totally in

The new slit-type nozzles at the ends of the dashboard are aimedpermanently at the side windows since their job is to keep thewindows free of mist - for safety's sake.

your command. The surprisingly tight turning circleof 32'2" allows you to glide in or out of parkingplaces many other cars have to pass.

Good visibility and powerful lighting areother essential parts of a safe car to make sure youcan see and be seen. The efficient heating andventilation system and the electrically heated rearwindow give you summer visibility all the yearround.

The big rectangular halogen headlights, withseparate bulbs for the dipped and main beams, lightyour way on the darkest of nights. In murkyweather, the high-intensity rear foglights are indis-pensable.

The new headlight design allows better opticaladjustment of the beam and so enables the eyes toadjust more quickly to the change from main beamto dipped. This means beam changes no longerirritate or tire the eyes.

  • You're safe if you choosea Volvo 264.

At Volvo, safety gets more and more important. Realistic crashtesting and accident research have resulted in a number of designimprovements to increase safety. The new frontal design, for exam-ple, gives even better absorption of crash impact.

Volvo's safety brake system is now even safer. Both circuits operatesimultaneously on three wheels each, so should one circuit fail, theother still gives about 80% of full braking power. All four wheelshave disc brakes. The front ones are ventilated.

Volvo's steering wheel gives fivefold safety in the event of a head-oncollision: 1) The lower steering rod separates, 2) the steering columncollapses, and 3) moves downwards away from the driver; 4) thewheel's anchorage to the column crumples, and 5) the wide bolsteredhub spreads the impact.

There are two kinds of safety. On the one hand, there are the things one can do to stop accidentshappening. On the other, there are the things onecan do to minimise injury.

As far as preventing accidents goes, the brakesobviously play an important part. Although Volvoalready had a very safe braking system - discbrakes all round and a unique triangle-split dualcircuit brake system - the 1975 Volvos are better. The new triangle-split dual circuit brake system hasa stepped-bore master cylinder, a feature unique toVolvo.

Should one circuit fail, only normal brakepedal pressure is required to give full braking effectthrough the remaining circuit. In the possibility of abrake circuit failing, a warning lamp lights up onthe dashboard. It's almost the only thing younotice!

An example of Volvo's concern with preven-ting injury is the safety cage which surrounds thepassenger compartment. The front and rear sectionsof the body are "soft" energy-absorbing areas whilethe cage of immensely strong box section profileskeeps the passenger area intact and the occupantssafe. In fact, each one of the six roof pillars isstrong enough to carry the entire weight of the car.

To protect your flanks, the Volvo has tubularsteel side-impact members built into all the doors. So it's not so hard to understand that, in the newVolvo 264, you and your passengers are as wellprotected as you could wish to be. Of course, thisassumes that you're using your safety belt.

  • One of the really big new features of the Volvo 264is the smooth 2.7 litre V6-engine with its' twinoverhead camshafts. The engine block and cylinderheads are manufactured of aluminium. This newengine is equipped with a transistorized ignitionsystem which has no breaker points. It givessmoother more reliable running, better fuel eco-nomy and calls for less adjustment. For the newengine, there is a choice of two new gearboxes, onemanual and one automatic.

If you prefer to do the gear changing yourself, your Volvo comes with a five-speed manual gearbox.A finger-tip operated catch prevents inadvertentselection of reverse gear.

The five-speed gearbox gives a sporty accentto driving while reducing fuel consumption. Thefourth speed on this excellent gearbox is ideal forovertaking at higher speeds.

    New dimensions in performance.

Research has shown that the driver of a car with automatic transmis-sion is a safer driver because he has more time to concentrate on theactual driving. Volvo's automatic selector has six different positions- which are illuminated so you can see them clearly after dark too. This silky-smooth transmission changes up and down almost imper-ceptibly. Changing down to 1st can be made at a speed of 37 mph,an obvious advantage in very hilly country where engine braking isan appreciable benefit.

The new V6-engine has twin overhead camshafts and a CIfuel injection system; it develops 140 hp DIN and givesbetter acceleration and economy.

The reason for Volvo's durability starts here. Hot-dip galvanizedbody components are used extensively - mounting frames, frontwing stiffeners, side member strengthening pieces, wheel and springstrut housings, outer and inner tie plates, cowl member, drain plates, air intake and air outlet, and the upper and lower sections of the jackanchorages. On top of that, the entire body is submerged in a electro-lytic primer bath and then closed sections of the body are treatedwith rust-proofing fluid

.Not until all this has been done is a Volvo

    ready for painting.

In Sweden, where conditions are tough on a car,Volvo has the highest probable life expectancy -

1 4.2 years. This figure comes from the non-partisanSwedish Motor Vehicle Inspection Company.

To build a car of this class quality-thinkingmust start at the drawing board. The function andreliability of every individual part are tested underthe most extreme conditions in Volvo's comprehen-sive technical laboratories; on the test bench, in theclimate chamber and on our proving ground, where

    Quality - the Volvo way.

The new Volvo 264 has done many thousands of miles on Volvo'sproving ground. On every imaginable type of road from cobblestonesto pot-holes, from switchbacks to smooth high-speed runs. Throughsalt water and mud troughs, on braking and handling pads. Thistreatment quickly shows up even the slightest faults which are thentraced back and irradicated. Not until drawing board theory has beenconfirmed in practice is a new model given Volvo's approval forproduction.

12,000 miles of testing corresponds to 60,000 milesof normal motoring.

Engine, gearbox, brakes, wheels - each isgiven its baptism of fire. The cars are tortured dayafter day, non-stop. During one year, the Volvo testdrivers clock up 450,000 miles.

This is why we give such a generous warrantywith no mileage limitations whatsoever.

This is immediately apparent as soon as yousettle down behind the attractive and comfortablepadded wheel of this outstanding luxury car.

The Volvo 264 GL is designed to be the lastword in mobile luxury. To this end it is equippedwith full air condition, electrically-operated frontside windows, headlight wiper/washers and distin-guished coachwork, and a driving seat which incor-porates an automatic heating system.
