The Alumnae Association invites all graduates back for the reunion May 16-17. The Maple Leaf Awards, honoring alums who are making a difference in the world, will be bestowed (nomination form enclosed). Attendees can have class photos taken, attend a business meeting, celebrate Mass prior to a banquet, and visit with old friends. A registration form is inside.

As the Costello sisters prove, a little distance is not an obstacle to attending.

“I like to come back and see all the generations of ‘old girls’ and see how they continue to face the challenges that life provides,” Phyllis said. “I like to visit with Sister Ann Victoria (Wasylina) and listen to her remember the old days. I like to see Mrs. (Genevieve) Stelmach still in the dining room. I come back to renew and refresh myself.”

“I think I have stayed in touch and come back so often, because the Mount was not just a school to us,” Mary said. “It really was

our family. I am not saying that it was all roses, but the bottom line was that the Ursuline Sisters really loved us, and the girls really were like sisters to each other,” she said. “It gives me a very warm feeling to be welcomed back by the Ursuline Sisters.”

Both women say a Mount education differed from that of other high schools.

“We were working students, so we had jobs to do as well as taking classes,” Mary said. “Somehow I was assigned a dorm and bathroom to clean my first year and never ‘graduated’ from that job.” They served a meal one semester and worked in the library.

The Alumnae Association of Mount Saint Joseph fosters loyalty, friendship, and community

among graduates, former students, and the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. In the spirit of Saint Angela Merici, the association upholds Catholic ideals, promotes Christian formation, and supports involvement in Christian service.

SiSTeR RUTH GeHReS A’51 – shown here at a Dec. 19, 2008 Mission Advancement staff luncheon in her honor – spent six weeks in December and January at the Mount and with friends and family. Her visit was possible since it was summer vacation in Chile, where she and Sister Mimi Ballard A’66 are missionaries at Casa Ursulina, a women’s center in Chillán. Besides relaxing, Sister Ruth met with communications staff to discuss the Casa Ursulina Web site (casaursulina.org) and with Director of Development Debra Noble to exchange ideas for support of Casa Ursulina. She also visited past and current donors to this ministry, including classmate Mary Ruth Knott Cecil A’51 and Ursuline Associates ed and Gloria Cecil.

To ALL Mount Girls Everywhere,I don’t know of a “Mount

girl” anywhere who can resist a CHALLENGE! So I am issuing an official challenge. Did you know that even students who did not graduate

from the Mount are considered associate alumnae members? The challenge is for each and every

Mount girl to contact at least one friend from your days at the Mount and convince her to attend Alumnae Weekend this year. It doesn’t have to be a graduation anniversary year to take the time to reconnect with old friends. Every person has plenty of old ‘war stories’ to share and laugh about. Everyone I know has a good time visiting old haunts, talking with sisters who taught during Mount days, or just reliving the glory days of their youth.

It all starts with communication and it is all up to you. It would be great to have record attendance this year. It would be even better if everyone brings some recipes, or writes down their fondest memories or some Mount Saint Joseph lore to be included in the “Mount girl” cookbook we will be publishing!

It doesn’t matter if you graduated from MSJ. Just track down your best friends from your teen years and make plans to attend Alumnae Weekend, May 16-17, 2009. I promise you will leave with a little more spring in your step and your heart will be lighter for having laughed. Nancy Mills A’72President, Mount Saint Joseph Alumnae Association

Spring 2009 3 The NEW Mount

“There are so many things that pop into my mind when I think of the Mount,” Mary said. “I see Sister Marie Bernadette, who was the first teacher to greet us. I see Sister Miriam sitting in her office. I hear Sister Mary Catherine calling us ‘ninny hammers,’” Mary said. “Still today as the Mount comes into view, I feel like I am coming home.”

Phyllis said her first image that comes to mind about the Mount is the friendliness of the girls. “We were all so different in the places we came from, but everyone was so accepting,” she said. “Almost all of the sisters loved us and took care of us.

“It has always been comforting to know that the Mount was there,” Phyllis said. “There have been changes, of course, but only superficial changes. The underlying spirit remains the same, the spirit of love and caring for others.”

NANCY BAShAm LYNCh C’31...................................Submitted by her daughter, Danna Carol Lynch herndon My mother, Nancy Lynch of Curdsville, Ky., is 96 and still living independently (with some help) at Jackson Oaks, 3131 North Highland, Jackson, TN 38305. Some of you may have seen her on television the day after the Feb. 5, 2008, tornadoes as she came out of the local Civic Center. Her section of the Oaks was destroyed by the tornadoes about 7:05 that evening. The tornado also hit Union University at Jackson, and there was wide coverage of that event. Everyone survived in spite of the destruction. Mom celebrated her 96th birthday of Nov. 11 on Nov. 15, 2008 at Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn (she loves the mutton) in Owensboro with about 45 members of her family including nieces and nephews in the area. Although her short-term memory is not always sharp, she definitely remembered where she was as soon as we crossed the river between Sebree and Beech Grove through St. Joseph and on to Owensboro. As I remember the story, mother was sent to St. Joseph at the age of 16 because it was thought that she was too young to go farther away from home to college. She often told the story that she traded French lessons to the Sisters for piano lessons. Until that time she had played the piano by ear and had not been fortunate enough to receive piano lessons. She later took additional lessons and became an accomplished pianist. After graduation from St. Joseph, she moved to Owensboro and worked for Ken-Rad prior to moving to Louisville. While attending Carver School of Missions at Southern Seminary, she met and married a young minister from Forest City, N.C. She married Lewis Harrill Lynch on Sept. 4, 1943. They had two sons, David Owen and William Harrill, and me, Danna Carol. She served as pastor’s wife, as Lewis Lynch was a Southern Baptist minister and teacher. She also taught piano lessons from time to time. After her husband died in 1976, she again went to work part-time until she was 80, at which time she decided that one should not work after the age of 80. I hope you can add her name to your mailing list. Thank you. (Editor’s note: Nancy was on our Lost Alumnae List. Now she’s found!)

mARY ROSE ShOEmAKER A’41I have been a resident at Carmel Home since May 31, 2001. I am in a wheelchair and can wheel myself to the Chapel for Holy Mass, rosary and other church services. Several Mount Girls live here at Carmel Home. All of us cherish our days at the Mount and enjoy talking about our great memories there. I loved the scholastic training, and as I worked for my tuition, many things I learned helped me in my life work as a teacher. I am sorry I am not able to attend reunions. I really do enjoy The New Mount and learning of former classmates and students at the Mount. It is so good to get news.

mARíA ANTONINI A’68Hello, all. I was an exchange student from Venezuela at Saint Joseph in 1967-68. I have seen the news about the ice storm that has hit Kentucky, and I could not help but wonder with concern how my beloved Saint Joseph Academy and Maple Mount were doing. Out of curiosity, I googled Maple Mount and found this beautiful Web page. I want you all to know that my prayers are with you and that I thank God for the impulse that led me to find this page. I am 58 now, and after my fruitful stay at Saint Joseph’s, I went on to become an English teacher, and later I got my M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Linguistics at Indiana University, Bloomington campus. While in Bloomington, in 1976, I managed to contact Elizabeth Anne Ringer, one of my buddies at St. Joseph’s, who lived in Indianapolis. I lost contact with EA (as she was known) and with anybody from the school till today. I am now a retired full professor from the Pedagogical University in Caracas, and I am working as a public interpreter. I hope you can find the time, when the weather allows it, to let me know how you are. Warm (both from the heart and literally) regards, María ([email protected])

NANCY mILLS A’72 I have always loved winter weather, especially when Mount girls’ greatest fun was sledding down the valley hill. But this year I had a different experience. The winter ice storm that hit western Kentucky in late January was beautiful, but it didn’t take long to realize that power and telephone lines could not be restored quickly. Cell phone towers went down, and temperatures plunged into the single digits. I volunteered for Saints Joseph and Paul Church, which still had power. Working through the Red Cross, we provided a shelter for four days to provide warmth and food. Working at the shelter was an unexpected blessing. I spoke with frightened elderly persons, watched over small children to give their mothers a break, and even helped with medical care for those who were ill. I believe that though I walked away from the shelter exhausted, the experience benefited me as much or more than the people we helped.

mARY ANN ShEWmAKER PAYNE A’72I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your prayers, thoughts and get well wishes in 2008. So far my lung cancer is gone, and I am still showing cancer free. Please continue to keep me in your prayers that I have a much better 2009 and stay cancer free. I do have X-rays every three months and am still taking medication for the blood clot that developed when I got cancer. I am truly a miracle of the Father Volk service that was held for me. Thank you so much. That was a very touching day for me and I will never forget it. I felt it that day, and knew I would be free of cancer. I used the beautiful prayer blanket from Nancy mills each time I had chemo and thought of that wonderful Class of ‘72. I knew I couldn’t leave you. My husband took such wonderful care of me and gave me so much support as well. I returned to work on Jan. 5, so please keep me in your prayers that I continue the journey of CANCER FREE. For all of you who have an illness in your family, I pray that you will get well soon. May you have a wonderful 2009. God bless all of you.

KAThY WELz mCNEARY A’67Here is a little bit about myself. I have been married for 41 years to Tim. We have three children – Ryan, Kevin and Jennifer – who have all married and have given us five grandchildren so far. They are: Lauren, Michael, Matthew, Aiden, and Kira. They range in age from 2 to 9. They and our children are the love of our life. Tim and I have been in the construction and real estate business since our marriage. We enjoy helping people fulfill their dreams of home ownership. I would love to hear from more of my fellow classmates and friends. My email is [email protected].

mARIAN LANhAm (Attended 1969-71)It was a dark and stormy night. Seriously! Well, maybe not stormy but you know the type...It was October, the trees had lost their leaves and were scratching against the screens...The moon was full...The kind of night that could be a little spooky for three teens who were up past “lights out” at MSJ. Although we were supposed to be in bed, Nancy mills, Julia Gosser and I were in the Mount Room working on the school paper, trying to meet a deadline. Have you ever noticed how large the windows are at the Mount? They are large enough for a full grown man to stand up in. We were diligently working and listening to the radio when a story about some escapees at the county jail aired. I asked Nancy and Julia what they would do if all of a sudden the escapees were standing in the window. It was just enough of a suggestion to really stir our imagination. It wasn’t long before we decided to head on up to the dorms. We turned out the lights and started up three flights in the dark, giggling nervously. When we got to the top floor we turned on the lights for Nancy to make her way across the locker room to her dorm. When the light came on I said, “Oh, there’s a mouse!” All of a sudden, Julia let out the most blood-curdling scream I have ever heard. I immediately flew back to my dorm and jumped in bed because I didn’t want to get in trouble and because Julia’s scream scared the snot out of me. Of course Sister Susan and Sister Mary came to see what all the commotion was about. Julia was jumping up and down, saying in her Russell Springs drawl, “The man got Nancy! The man got Marian!” By this time Nancy had gotten down from the table she had jumped up on and was back on the steps, saying, “Julia, I’m here. I’m okay.” I stayed in my bed because I figured it was safer there. I don’t remember how it all got straightened out. But Julia was screaming because she thought I said, “Oh, there’s a man!” The next morning in the dining hall the girls from the first floor dorm asked, “Did you hear that scream last night?” I just followed the advice I was given by my Mom and pretended it didn’t happen and went on.TRACIE mACALuSO GuTIERREz A’83I am a divorced mother of two boys, ages 23 and 24, and three granddaughters ages 5, 3, and 6 months. I work for the Missile Defense Agency as a Contract Specialist and I have been with the agency for over 13 years, but with the government over 20 years. I decided to move to Huntsville, Ala., with the Missile Defense Agency in 2008 in order to broaden my horizons. I retired from the Army National Guard in August 2007 with 23 years served. While serving in the military I was activated to Operation Desert Shield/Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. I was blessed to be awarded the Bronze star while serving in Iraq for being able to support 90 percent of the theater with medical supplies.

Ice Storm Hits Maple Mount

The last week of January proved not even icy cold and a lack of electricity could keep the Ursuline spirit down. The ice storm that left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity across Kentucky knocked out power at Maple Mount at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 27, and it did not return until Feb. 1. A natural gas generator kept power to Saint Joseph Villa, where sisters needing long-term care live, but other sisters dressed in layers and did their best to care for each other.

“The sisters were magnanimous,” said Sister Rita Scott, plant administrator. “Their concern for helping each other was just very good community spirit.”

Sister Rita has been on campus the past 19 years and said this is the worst disaster she’s seen at the Mount. “There’s not one tree on campus undamaged.”

Although other states were also affected, President Barack Obama declared Kentucky a major disaster area.

Able-bodied sisters on campus, and a handful who came from Owensboro, cooked and served meals, and helped the short-handed nursing staff tend to the sisters. Employees gradually increased as the week went on, but near full staffing didn’t return until Feb. 2.

The generator provided heat to the Villa bedrooms and hallway, and powered one light and one outlet per bedroom. In Saint Ursula and Paul Volk halls, the propane gas generator powered only light in the hallways. Propane tanks were used for temporary heating. Mass was held in the Rainbow Room of the Villa. The only contact with the outside world were phones and radios. Laundry was bagged and hauled to town to be washed.

Part of a tree in front of the former Mount Saint Joseph Academy fell due to the weight of the ice that hit Kentucky on Jan. 27. There was extensive tree damage across the Mount Saint Joseph campus. (Photo by Sister Amelia Stenger A’67)

Sister Annalita Lancaster C’43 went in search of a nativity scene for the Motherhouse Chapel gathering space. On Dec. 1, she found a Christmas crib (above) with a 1935 oil painting of the city of Bethlehem in the attic of St. Angela Hall. Sister Diane Marie Payne A’63 recalls the crib being on display in the academy auditorium when she was a student in 1961. The Academy closed in 1983, so the crib has been in storage at least that long. The Sisters would like to locate J.R. Mass, the artist who visited the Mount all those years ago.
