Thoughts from the presidentDear Alumnae, Have you ever noticed when you tell someone that you went to a convent boarding school, the look of surprise and curiosity you get? Not very many people have had that experience. For a long time, I tended to look at the negative aspects of it: my homesickness and no boys. In recent years I’ve had the pleasure of reacquainting myself with the Mount and some of the wonderful women who are and were the sisters who cared for me back then, and to see them in the light of adulthood rather than through those adolescent eyes. It’s taken me too long to realize how much they gave me. Really, their lives. The values they instilled in us have carried us through a lifetime. As a student at Mount Saint Joseph Academy, I received the best education and the encouragement and time to stay focused. Good friends surrounded me. What beautiful grounds to see every day! What great food to eat every day! Most of all, what good sisters who provided all of this to us. I don’t know a lot of English lit quotes but one of my favorites goes something like this (think T. S. Eliot): “We will return to the place we started and know it for the first time.” I am so enjoying getting to know the Mount again. Our reunion in May was a great time of getting to know the Mount again and of reconnecting with old friends and seeing where their lives have taken them. The fact that God put us at MSJ means we have gifts which we have as a group decided to share. We talked at our business meeting about what goals as a group we have. It’s not too soon to look at where we are with those goals. You may have signed up to be on a committee. If you did, I encourage you to contact your chairperson and see what needs to be done. If you don’t remember who that is, you can contact Marian Bennett or Sister Marietta. I hope you all are having a wonderful summer and bearing up well under the heat. Please contact me if you have ideas or suggestions for how we can make the Alumnae Association what you want it to be.Blessings and peace,

Award-winning Alumnae

Joan Sherron Hofman ’51 and Mary Lou Byrne Payne ’66 are the 2006 recipients of the Maple Leaf Award, recognizing alumnae of Mount Saint Joseph Academy for outstanding contributions to their local faith communities, civic communities, and/or Mount Saint Joseph. Joan, a native of McQuady, was recognized for her volunteer work for the elderly, for needy children, and in her neighborhood. A nurse and the wife of a now retired Notre Dame professor, Joan served as president of the Faculty Wives’ Club. She also organized an Investment Club for women wishing to learn how to manage their money wisely and has been involved in several reading clubs. Joan and her husband, Emil, have three sons. They live in South Bend, Indiana. Mary Lou, who lives in Knottsville, has been a member of the Owensboro Right to Life since it was organized in 1973. She has served as recording and corresponding secretary, was editor of the Right to Life newsletter for 20 years, and has traveled extensively in support of Right to Life endeavors. Mary Lou also has “adopted” an elderly lady at Carmel Home and has taken care of many of her needs for more than seven years. She and her husband, Darrell, have four children and seven grandchildren.

On February 24, Brescia University honored the 2006 nominees to its Gallery of Distinguished Alumni with a reception in the lobby of the Administration Building. The 2006 class featured seven distinguished graduates, including two graduates of Mount Saint Joseph Academy: Marge Weaver Slack ’53 and Sister Dianna Ortiz ’77, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph. Marge Slack was educated by Ursuline sisters at Saint Anthony School and Mount Saint Joseph Academy and then graduated in 1957 from Brescia College with a degree in English. Marge and her husband Bob, a 1962 Brescia graduate and also a 2006 Distinguished Alumni honoree, have been very active in Brescia’s alumni affairs. Marge was a charter member and served for nine years on the president’s advisory council. Bob was phonathon chair and president of the Alumni Association. Sister Dianna graduated from Brescia in 1983 with a degree in elementary education. In

1987 she went to Guatemala as a missionary to teach Mayan children in the highlands of that country. Despite death threats, she remained in the country to teach the children. On November 2, 1989, she was abducted and tortured by members of the Guatemalan security forces. Her book, The Blindfold’s Eyes: My Journey from Torture to Truth, details the shattering effects of torture on her life and her commitment to work in support of all who have survived this crime against humanity. Sister Dianna is a co-founder and director of The Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition International (TASSC), based in Washington, D.C. n

The Saturday night banquet for alumnae drew a crowd. More than 100 alumni attended the reunion.

Alumnae AdventuresMARY MARGARET DRURY ’66 received a special award on June 8 for 40 years of service to the Diocese of Owensboro. After a liturgy of thanksgiving celebrated by Bishop John J. McRaith, Mary Margaret received a beautiful plaque and a wish for 40 more years. During a surprise potluck dinner, the honoree

entertained us with stories of her beginnings working for the diocese. A few days after her June 1966 graduation from the Academy, Mary Margaret received a call from typing teacher Sister Mary Charlotte Younker telling her that the Diocesan School Office needed a secretary. Because her only available transportation to Owensboro was with someone who went to work quite early, she had to wait two hours for her 9 a.m. interview with Diocesan School Superintendent Msgr. Raymond Hill. Already nervous, Mary Margaret was asked to type a letter with several carbon copies on an electric typewriter — a

machine she had not encountered at the Mount. By 3 p.m. she had finished the typing and delivered the letter and copies to Msgr. Hill. Instead of what she expected to hear — that he would have to try someone else for the position — she heard him say, “I’ll see you on Monday.” So Mary Margaret started working for the diocese, first in the school office for Msgr. Hill and later

for Father Henry O’Bryan, and then for Msgr. Hancock in the business office. When Msgr. Hancock left to be a pastor, Mary Margaret stayed on as business office secretary, where she continues to work today. In addition to what’s listed in her job description, she is generous in taking on many other jobs and chores — things that the rest of us don’t see. Obviously she’s very worthy of recognition and appreciation.

Contributed by Sister Joseph Angela Boone, OSU TINA WEBER SMITH ’74How the years have flown by and the Picnic has grown. I was a freshman at the Mount when the first Picnic was held. I believe it may have been Sept. 10, 1970. I remember it rained the night after the picnic. The next day we cleaned up the park, and everything was yucky and wet. Who would have guessed that the Picnic would still be going and growing larger every year! I was last at the Mount in 2004, for my 30th alumnae anniversary. I have so many fond memories of the Mount, and always remember that first Picnic when September rolls around. I pray for good weather and a successful Picnic. Thanks for reminding me of happy memories. SISTER BRENDA WILLETT ’51I really regret that I was unable to attend alumni celebrations. This was 55 years for me and I would have loved to be there, but I was recuperating from an illness. I’m doing much better but not back to full strength yet. Please keep me in your prayers.

SISTER GRACE SIMPSON ’56 What a great weekend at MSJ for my 50th anniversary!! Of the 29 classmates that graduated in 1956, 19 came to the reunion. I celebrated so hard and got very tired. Anyway, it was worth it to see my classmates and take part in so many meaningful activities – Mass, prayer services, times of sharing, walking together, visiting Sr. Lennora, our last living teacher, and eating!!
