PERSPECTIVES

The nation has been in the process ofbuilding a peaceful, modern and developed onewith the united strength of the government, thepeople and the Tatmadaw. Priority has beengiven to national consolidation to shape ourfuture. Amity and unity among the nationalbrethren have been further cemented.

Under the correct leadership of thegovernment, the entire national people are doingtheir bit in nation-building tasks. As a result, there have been fruitful results across thecountry with a network of roads and bridgesfor smooth transport plus economic, education, health and social foundations. These are signsof progress and prosperity of the Union.

The regions where national raceorganizations, which have returned to the legalfold at the government’s kind invitation, liveare also developing. Alongside regional peaceand stability, the local people are enjoying fruitsof progress.

For the sake of national security and peaceand stability in border areas, the government ismaking plans for militia organizationsshouldering State defence duties together withthe Tatmadaw to transform themselves intoborder guard forces. The ceremonies to formborder guard forces took place in Pungpahkyemin Mongton Township and Mongyu inMongyawng Township, Shan State (East), on 30March.

With the formation of those forces, themilitia organizations have had the chance toperform national defence duties as border guardforces. The local people have welcomed theforces, envisioning eternal peace in the borderregions.

Unity is of significance of the Union. All thenational people are living in amity and unitywith the fine traditions of the Union. The borderregions will surely see perpetual peace whenthe militia organizations carry out nationaldefence duties conscientiously as border guardforces.

THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Saturday, 3 April, 2010 7

If with close relationsTekkatho Hla Maung (Yedashe)

Close relations are usually followed by strongbonds of friendship. In my childhood, we used toshout a slogan in procession “National Day, Our Day”without any knowledge of its significance. OnIndependence Days, we enjoyed ourselves, joiningcommemorative sports events, but we were at thattime too young to realize its essence, and so also onUnion Day, Armed Forces Day, Martyrs’ Day, andWorkers’ Day.

When we were in high school, we came to havelittle knowledge of the days of significance. I spent myschooldays from primary to tertiary education in asmall town Yedashe. I knew national races just byname. I hardly saw some Kayin nationals in the areason the eastern bank of the Sittoung River. The memoryof the word “Kayin Age” is still with me.

Children of us stayed hiding in the bomb sheltersout of fear when Kayin insurgents approached ourtown. We had to run passing among the blazes for ourlives after they set fire to our town. When we wereclose to Shwe Wettoe Pagoda, the whole town was inflames. I hardly suppressed my emotional feeling tocry just as I witnessed some flames coming up fromthe sight of our house. As the town was caught insurprise, some service personnel and police werekilled in the raid, including fathers of some friends ofmine. At that time, I was puzzled by the incident, which was beyond my thinking power.

Only at present do I come to realize that suchincidents are due to lack of relations between onenational race and another. Such undesirableconsequences would not have come true if nationalraces had known the importance of mutualunderstanding between them, and put non-disintegration of national solidarity in the fore.

In my youth, students of us had not seen peopleof other national races. So, rural folks had less chanceto deal with and were strange to national races. Onlywith the might of the national unity could we overcomethe evil consequences of the terrible period. We hadever seen Kachin nationals only when they came toour town from the northern part of the nation. Theyjoined the armed conflicts on the government’s side.I was overwhelmed by sadness when we saw theinsurgency-torn town. Up to that time, peace andstability had not been restored much. Our region wasunder the rule of the government in daytime, and therule of armed groups at night. For instance, in thefestival of the Mei Dek Pagoda, a famous pagoda inthe town, the government undertook the festival indaytime, and an armed force I was not sure WhiteYebaw or Red Flag, at night. I was completely puzzledby the fact that they rose against, but then extendedtheir hands and hearts to the government. Only nowcan I realize that national unity is a must.

At that time, the Tatmadaw has not been strongenough. Without any participation of the public, noway the Tatmadaw managed to defend the motherland.A Tatmadaw must be capable of safeguarding thenation, efficient, and modern. The nation’s fallingunder alien subjugation was largely due to lack of amodern Tatmadaw, and poor leadership. In the time ofKing Bagyidaw, the nation started to face alien

invasion. General Maha Bandoola could bring dignityto the motherland, but in the end the nation concededloss due to great gap in the firepower. In the time ofKing Bagan, half of the nation was given up to thecolonialists. In the time of King Thibaw, the colonialiststook the Myanmar king very easily, thus pushing thewhole nation under the yoke of colonialism. That didtarnish the image of the nation. Our country encounteredsuch an avoidable incident due to lack of nationaldefence power. History shows that it is required of allnational brethren to remain harmonious in boostingnational defence capacity and prowess. Truly, onlywhen national unity and the national defence strengthof the Tatmadaw are exerted in combination will it bepossible for our country to stand tall in the globalcommunity.

That concept came to my knowledge fully onlywhen I joined the Tatmadaw. Tatmadaw members haveto march through ravines, jungles and mountain ranges. So, Tatmadaw members of us had closer relations withlocal national races. They relished the greetings whenwe called them in their dialect with a pleasing lisp suchas anu, awah, pawt, mei, phahti and amoe. Then, ourrelations grew into mutual friendship. As for Tatmadawmembers like us who were away from home, we feltvery encouraged and relaxed to call elder persons ofnational races phahti and amoe (father and mother). Then, we fell deeply friendly to local national races. Onan operation in Namhkam, I happened to put a questionto a local Shan damsel.

“Hey, we must go home now. Are you happywith our return home?”

“Yes, we are.”“Oh, why?”Because this place is instable under the threat of

guns and bombs. I sympathize people like you whoare shouldering national defence duties at risk to life.”

It is natural that nothing breeds more attachmentthan close friendship between two persons. I once wroteabout a Kachin male friend of mine, who was myclassmate and roommate from Hteetan College. He roseto the rank of Brigade Commander in KIA. When Iarrived in their stronghold, I heard no sounds of gun. There were no causalities from both sides. I was surprisedby that. The region was KIA-active area and there brokeout major battles. I think it was due to the close bondbetween us. For a Tatmadawman, he has to give priorityto his duty when facing the enemy. When my friend diedin his region, a picture of his together with his wifePalaung national was carried in the newspaper. In thiscontext, I thought when there was close contact withnational brethren, I happened to see a string of attachment.

If one region was far from another, if there waspoor transport and if there was no contact, how couldsuch a string of attachment come?

But now, all the regions including border areasare developing with smooth transport. There have beencontacts among the national people. Unlike in the past, the sound of guns and cannons are no more. We sawmore attachment to the national races when we were invarious regions on duty as Tatmadawmen. The lightinfantry battalion in Shwebo was my first mother unit. The battalion was formed most with Kayah nationals

as it had been transformed from Kayah army. I stillremember Kayah national sergeants Maung Mya andHtun Hla I was working with when I had littleexperience in service. How can I forget them savingmy life on a front line.

I cannot forget that I escaped from the hands ofBCP as Kachin national warrant officer Gyaingwalaand private Mayunaw save my life at risk to their liveswhen we retreated from the BCP-controlled regioncalled Lonhtan in Kokant. Every battle cannot bewon. We may win or lose. Indeed, how disgusting itis to see lack of peace and stability in the regions ofnational races!

I don’t think stories about saving one national’slife from the other’s will ever end. When a militaryoperation was carried out in Bago Yoma, a skirmishbroke out in a small village called Ladakwin. Under along-legged house, a young woman member of theBCP closely aimed her carbine at me. She had an edgeover me. She was about to pull the trigger. It was amoment of great importance. At that time, I heardsounds of carbine on my left side and the woman fellto the ground. When I turned back, my companycommander Kachin national Capt M Zaw Yaw wasbeside me.

That helped forge a bond of friendship betweenus. Why? Is it because of close bond? When webecame friendly, we came to know more about eachother. We shouldered national defence duties togetherwith due respect. We had more attachment to eachother. I became oneness with them. There was moreunderstanding between us.

Although there is no longer unrest and violence,we cannot neglect the fact that there are those who areattempting to capitalize on the country’s situation. The incidents in Iraq and Afghanistan have provedhow important national defence is. It is like sayinghow important national duties are and that it is time wewere united.

For our new generations to be able to live inpeace and tranquility, we have worked hard toimprove our military, organizational, economic, social, religious, education and health affairs and to protectthe nation from being under alien rule.

The current situation is different from that of thepast when we were in service. How peaceful and prosperousour country is! We had no longer our nightmares, havingescaped from the dark of internal insurgency. All theregions are developing with sound infrastructures andspecial projects being implemented. There have beensmooth transport and contacts among the regions.

We need to continue to equip our Tatmadawwith more defence power. National unity is necessaryto ensure non-disintegration of the Union. It is ourduty to safeguard national sovereignty andindependence our forefathers achieved by sacrificingtheir lives, blood and sweat. Non-disintegration of theUnion, national unity and perpetuation of sovereigntyare the main duties of the entire national people.

It is true that close friendship grows intoattachment.

End of freezing in many states by 2099?PRINCETON, 2 April — A

US organization calledClimate Central says itspreliminary figures showaverage future US Marchtemperatures will behigher because of climatechange.

The organization’s sci-entists say they have justpublished an interactivemap showing what variousstates might expect duringthe third month of years tocome.

Climate Central said itsmap uses special high-resolution projections cov-ering the lower 48 states toshow where average

March temperatures areexpected to be above orbelow freezing each dec-ade this century. Thegroup’s maps also com-pare projections under areduced-carbon-pollutionscenario versus a high onethat extends current trends.

The scientists say theirfindings show either a highor complete loss of freez-ing zones by the end of thecentury in every stateanalyzed.

“Minnesota, Montanaand North Dakota wouldlose the most total below-freezing area, while sevenother states — from Ari-

zona to Wisconsin — areprojected to lose all theycurrently have,” the scien-tists said in a statement.

“These maps imply fu-ture changes the researchcommunity is only begin-ning to appreciate,” saidClimate Central scientistBen Strauss.

Climate Central says itis an organization of sci-entists and journalists“dedicated to communi-cating the best and latestclimate science.”

Teaching hygiene in schooleffective

ATLANTA, 2 April — Teaching students in schools inthe developing world about hygiene helps the wholehousehold reduce illness, US researchers said.

Lead study investigator Elizabeth Blanton of the Cen-tres for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta saidpoor sanitation and a lack of access to safe water contrib-ute to an estimated 1.87 million deaths per year fromdevastating diseases worldwide, mostly among childrenage 5 and younger in the developing world.

The CDC and colleagues at the Cooperative for As-sistance and Relieve Everywhere, Inc found that theschool student hygiene and water treatment educationprogramme in Kenya resulted in a 200 percent increasein household water treatment. In addition, the hygiene edu-cation programme also resulted in a 164 percent increasein proper hand-washing techniques among adults and 240percent among students, the study said.—Internet

The long-term trialsuggested the drug might increase a patient’s risk ofdeveloping prostate cancer, although other controlledclinical trials didn’t find such a linkage, the FDA said.

“FDA is still reviewing the available information andhas not concluded Stalevo increases the risk of develop-ing prostate cancer,” officials said in a statement.“Healthcare professionals should be aware of this possi-ble risk and follow current guidelines for prostate cancerscreening.”

OAK RIDGE, 2 April —US scientists say they arestudying micro-organismsin toxic groundwater tofind biological methods ofdealing with such con-taminants. The research bya collaboration of scien-tists from the US Depart-ment of Energy’s OakRidge National Labora-tory, the Joint Genome In-stitute and the Universityof Oklahoma, involved a“stressed” microbial com-munity near a formerwaste disposal pond on theOak Ridge Reservation inTennessee.

The study revealed mi-crobes with an overabun-dance of genes involved inDNA recombination andrepair and other defencemechanisms for dealingwith contaminants andother environmentalstresses. The studies, saidORNL researcher DavidWatson, are aimed at de-veloping ways of reducingthe level of contaminantsin groundwater, which atthe site includes nitrates,

solvents and heavy metals,including uranium.

“We are looking to bet-ter understand the evolu-tion of microbes in thegroundwater plume,”Watson said. “The mi-crobes that can breakdown nitrate into nitrogencan have a long-term ben-efit toward attenuating theplume.”Watson says re-searchers particularly wantto better understand the ge-netic makeup of microbesthat can metabolize oxi-dized forms of uraniuminto a form that is onlyslightly soluble and thuseasier to precipitate and re-move from the environ-ment.—Internet

New soybean aphid biotype identifiedfied by testing the aphid on soybean plantswith known resistance genes. The scien-tists found it was capable of feeding andmultiplying on varieties carrying the resist-ance genes Rag1 and Rag2.

“Identifying a biotype that can over-come Rag1 and Rag2 resistance, even be-fore soybean varieties with these resistancegenes were deployed in production, sug-gests high variability in virulence withinsoybean aphid populations,” said princi-pal research specialist Curt Hill.
