THE PROBLEMS NAUTEL’S SOLUTIONAntennasusedfornavigationalaidsareusuallysmallandinefficient,forbothpracticalandeconomicreasons.Thisresultsinthefollowingundesirableantennacharacteristics:

• Lowantennasystemefficienciesarecommon.

• ATUloadingcoilresistancecancausesignificantsystemlosses.

• Highratioofreactancetoresistancecreatesanarrowbandfiltereffectwhichcanattenuatethesidebandsoftheradiatedsignal.

• Automatictuningoftheloadingcoilisnecessarytooffsetsmallchangesofantennacapacitancetokeeptheantenna“ONTUNE”withchangingconditions.

• Resistivechangesingroundplaneandinsulatorlossescancauseincreasedreflectedpowerandareductionofforwardpoweratthetransmitter.Thetransmittermayreducepowerorevenshutdown,topreventequipmentdamage.

• ManualadjustmentstotheATUmatchingtransformerareoftenneededasweatherconditionschangetooffsetresistivechanges,necessitatingexpensivefieldmaintenancetrips.

• Evenifaperfectmatchisobtained,changesoftheantennalossresistancecausechangesofantennaefficiencywitharesultingchangeofcoverage.

• AnewtechniqueprovidesautomaticoperationofboththeloadingcoiltuningandadjustmentofaresistivematchingnetworkintheATUsuchthatanearperfectmatchismaintained–keepingtheantennatunedanditsresistancematchedunderchangingconditions.

• AserialdatalinkbetweentheATUandtheVectortransmitterstabilizestheantennacurrent,andtheradiatedpower,by automaticallyadjustingthetransmitteroutputpower.A2:1changeofthetotalantennaresistancerequiresanassociated2:1changeoftransmittertime+powertomaintainaconstantantennacurrent.Thetransmittermusthaveasuitablemaximumpowerratingtorealizethecompletebenefitsofthissolution.TheNautelsolutionoffersconfidencethatconsistentsystemcoverageisachieved.

• Loadingcoillossesarereduced,improvingantennasystemefficiency.

• AnoptionalresistorbankfortheATUaddsadditionalresistanceinserieswiththeantenna,optimizingthetrade-offbetweenantennabandwidthandefficiency.

Nautel’slatestgenerationofNon-DirectionalRadioBeacons(Vector)includestheresourcesforremotemonitoringandcontrol.TheVectorNDBincludesserialinterfacesthatallowaremotePCtocontrolandmonitortheVectorsystemincludingtheAntennaTuningUnitviatheVR-Linkremotecontrol/monitoring.

Nautel’sVR-LinkVectorremotecontrol/monitorprovidespasswordprotectedaccesstocontrolandmonitortheVectorsystem.Whenconnected,theuserhasaccesstothevastarrayofcontrol,statusandalarmsthatareavailablewiththeVectorsystem.Functionssuchasmaintenancechecks,systemstatuschecks,andsystemtroubleshootingtothelowestreplaceableunit(LRU)areallavailablefromtheremotePC.
