Energy Is the Ability to Do Work
Work involves motion
![Page 3: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Is this guy working?
![Page 4: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Why is he sweating?
![Page 5: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Work happens when a force moves an object over a distance!
Who is working?
![Page 6: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
The 2 types of energy
Potential
Energy in motion
Stored energy (the potential to do work is there but not seen)
Kinetic
![Page 7: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Potential Energy
![Page 8: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
KINETIC ENERGY
The amount of mass and velocity there is determines how much Kinetic Energy there is
![Page 9: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Mass then Kinetic Energy
Velocity then Kinetic Energy
Kinetic Energy = mass x velocity 2

Mechanical Energy
•energy that is possessed by an object due to its motion or due to its position
•can be either kinetic energy (energy of motion) or potential energy (stored energy of position)
Ex. A moving car possesses mechanical energy due to its motion
Ex. A barbell lifted high above a weightlifter's head possesses mechanical energy due to its vertical position above the ground
![Page 13: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
An object that possesses mechanical energy is able to do work. In fact, mechanical energy is often defined as the ability to do work. Any object that possesses mechanical energy - whether it is in the form of potential energy or kinetic energy - is able to do work. That is, its mechanical energy enables that object to apply a force to another object in order to cause it to be moved.
Mechanical Energy is defined as the Ability to Do Work

ElectricalComes from moving electrical
charges in the atom (electrons)Seen as power lines, batteries, lightening, and static electricity

ChemicalPotential energy that is stored as chemical bonds holding together chemical compounds
Examples are chemical batteries, candles (wax), and food in our bodies

ElectromagneticTravels in wavesIs a combination of magnetic and electrical wavesExamples include light, microwaves, x-rays, radiation, and radio waves

Heat or Thermal
Can be Kinetic or Potential
Comes from energy inside atoms and molecules
As the atoms or molecules move faster, the thermal energy increases
![Page 20: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)

NuclearEnergy stored in the nucleus of an atomResults when the nucleus splits or joins with another nucleus
Can happen naturally, from a star, or manmade, from a nuclear power plant
![Page 22: THE NATURE OF ENERGY](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081520/56816936550346895de09646/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)

Energy can be transformed from 1 form to another, especially from potential to kineticExamples include:
The electrical energy from a power line causes a motor to run which creates wind, which travels in waves
A wax candle creates heat which travels in waves and can turn a fan
