CHANGES TO THE NHSStarting in the 1960’s and continuing in the 1990’s

THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE AND COMMUNICTY CARE ACT OF 1990 – expanded the range of NHS services.

Led to the creation of THE INTERNAL MARKET system

THE INTERNAL MARKET• CREATED in 1991

• The PURPOSE of the Internal Market is to–promote competition within the NHS–Allow doctors/hospitals more

independence

• Doctors/Hospitals who take part in the system are known as Fundholders

FUNDHOLDINGDoctors and hospitals have

control of how they spend their money.

More choice on what medicines and treatments they buy.

THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WANTS A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE

NHS AND THE PRIVATE MARKET
