Estimated Rupture Area of major Himalayan earthquakes
According to GPS measurements and microseismic monitoring the Main Himalaya Thrust fault is locked over a width of 100-150km (yellow aera). The Accumulation rate of deficit of seismic moment is estimated 4.3 1019 Nm/yr , this is enough to drive a a Mw 7.6 (like the 2005 Kashmir EQ) earthquake every 7 years, or a Mw 8.2 (like the Bihar-Nepal earthqiake of 1934 every 100yr).
