WELCOME

Many of the global English bird names have changed over the last decade, and the large plovers are now more properly known as lapwings. The Blacksmith Lapwing is often seen on damp school fields in Pinelands, where its "tinking" call can be heard day and night and gives the bird its name. A pair are also often present on the grassy traffic island as you loop out of Pinelands onto the N2 towards Cape Town, especially in winter when the ground is flooded and worms are easy to come by. Blacksmith Lapwings lay beautifully camouflaged eggs in a scrape on the ground.

This edition of the Muse has been an unusually challenging one to produce – but it was nothing to do with the magazine itself. No, this was one of those months when LIFE and outside commitments conspired to add an extra load to the 'normal' routine of things by sucking time and energy from both of us.

Firstly, our writer and photographer, Glynnis, had a two week locum to do away from the office. This halved her usual time available to put together a fresh batch of stories. As always she has come through to deliver another interesting slice of Pinelands life for us.

Secondly, yours truly was laid low by illness for two weeks during the busiest time of the month. It put me in mind of the opening verse of the song The Weight by The Band:I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead.I just need some place where I can lay my head."Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"He just grinned and shook my hand and, "No", was all he said.

Being self-employed, there is no such thing as sick leave, or paid leave to take care of life's little knocks so there's little room to feel miserable when times are tough. You just have to juggle whatever energy, time and resources you have to get things done and remind yourself that you do receive payback when times are good.

Through the Muse, I have met many of the numerous and industrious entrepreneurs who live and work in Pinelands. Since 'going solo' six years ago I have a new found respect for these souls and understand why they are naturally positive and enthusiastic people – they just have to be! As the year starts to wind down, I hope you find some time to wind down yourselves – you deserve it!Enjoy the issue!

This month we are saying goodbye to some well-known Pinelands residents who have sold through Seeff and are relocating.Megum and Jos Reyneke have been part of the Pinelands community since 1979 and have decided that it is time to seek the quiet life of the countryside. They have bought a property in Napier from where Megum will continue to run her architectural practice. Megum has been actively involved in the Pinelands Rate Payers Association as well as the conservation of the Pinelands Heritage which has been very dear to her heart. We wish them well in their future endeavours.The new purchaser of the property is also an architect and we welcome him and his wife to the community. farewell after serving the Pinelands community since 1996. The very popular Guest House has been an asset to Pinelands and Anne will be sorely missed. The Pinelands Accommodation Network is already concerned about how they are going to cope without her. Anne will be taking an extended summer holiday firstly to Vermont and then overseas. Thereafter she will let us know what her next project is going to be. Thank you Anne for the positive input in building that village spirit that Pinelands is so loved for.Finally, a sad farewell to our dear colleague Andy Todd, who passed away suddenly on the 8th October. Although not a Pinelands resident Andy played a big role in the development of the Seeff brand. He was the Licensee of the Seeff Southern Suburbs branches. He was also a great golfing buddy and personal friend. Our condolences to his four children, and partner Debbie Chalmers. He will be sorely missed.

On 2 October a whole school Special Assembly was held for Mr van Haght to celebrate his 15 years at Cannons Creek as Head of Cannons Creek High School. After Mrs Booth welcomed all, including the School Trust members and Mr van Haght's special guests, she led the Assembly in devotions. Mr Currie who has taught for many years with Mr van Haght, gave a celebratory tribute to him, before members of the School's Trust Mr Don Nash and Mr Brian Hosie, handed over the award. After Mr van Haght's vote of thanks, the assembly sang the School Song, where-after Mr Starck (the MC) dismissed the school for break and the special guests enjoyed tea in the High School staffroom.

BOB AND IRIS DE GRAAF CELEBRATE 60 YEARSTheir 60 year romance began when Bob and Iris met for a blind date - they can't quite remember whether it was for a meal or to see a movie, but it was love at first sight and Bob remembers quite clearly that he was swept off his feet, and straight down the aisle. They were married at the Observatory Methodist Church on 16 October 1954, and stayed in their first home for 47 years, while they raised their family of six children, Robbie, Cheryl, Keith, Ingrid, Gary and Neal. They now have twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Their relationship has always consisted of great trust, and they "treat each other like royalty". Congratulations Bob and Iris De Graaf!

Pine Nuts social runner Heather Cooke first took up running in her 40’s when she and her husband were trying to get fit before a hike down the Fish River Canyon. She joined the Pine Nuts running club when she was 66 and ran her first half marathon when she was 67. Running a couple of half marathons a year was fine, (see Muse June 2011), but Heather was not sure that running a full marathon would be a good idea. When Pine Nuts runner John Wilter suggested a full marathon

to her earlier this year, she decided to try the longer distances and just see how they went. Working up to 30 km and then 32 km, Heather coped well, and found that she was learning to eat properly and take in the correct fluids. At the last minute she put in her entry for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in September, along with about eight other Pine Nuts runners. The marathon went well and Heather is very proud to have completed the run, but still feels the after effects and has decided to stick to the shorter runs, such as the Constantia Valley Grape run she did last Sunday. “It is a beautiful run, on paths not frequented by the general public, says Heather”. Congratulations to Heather on finishing her first full marathon at the age of 73!

The Helen Keller Society held their annual fundraising fête on Saturday 4 October 2014. It was a gorgeous sunny day, and there were lots of visitors and supporters, a real family orientated fête. The Society managed to raise over R74 500 and wishes to thank all the volunteers, the community, staff and residents for all their support.

Pinehurst pupils supported The Sunflower Fund by wearing bandanas on Friday 17 October. The PHS Music Department held their annual Gala Music Concert at the Baxter on 22 August 2014. The concert was a phenomenal success that showcased the Music Department’s exceptional talent and their dedication to hard work.

OUTSTANDING PHS GALA MUSIC CONCERT AT THE BAXTER THEATRE

The entire week was a highlight for the Pinelands High School Music Department. The bands scored as follows in the Tygerberg International Eisteddfod – The Senior Marimba Band scored 96%, the Senior

Wind Band scored 94%, the Jazz Band achieved 90%, while the school's Vocal Persuasion were runners-up in the High School Jam final competition held at Grand West on Saturday 23 August 2014.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF FINANCEWhilst it’s true that modern psychology is founded on the assumption that, in general, humans tend to think and behave rationally, this assumption has become somewhat of a misnomer in the realm of investing. Enter the relatively new field of behavioural finance where psychologists are trying to fathom why, in the face of clear logic and indisputable facts, investors are driven to abandon their clearly-mapped financial plans and prejudice their financial futures by their irrational, emotionally-fuelled behaviour. And of all the emotions that investors are confronted with on a daily basis, it’s greed and fear that are most likely to take the blame for wealth destruction.

POOR INVESTMENT DECISIONSMADE THROUGH GREED AND FEARGreed and fear, when given free reign in the investment markets, can serve to work against our primal survival instincts to prejudice our financial futures. At the top end of the investment market, greed drives investors to purchase stocks in insatiable quantities, whilst at the bottom of the market, irrational fear moves investors to shed their stocks quicker than you can say ‘low-risk investments for me, please’. How is it that rational, thinking and educated people can make such irrational, uneducated and inexplicable investment mistakes?

THE SUCCESS OF A LONG TERM PLANGreed, in the context of investing, is defined as an excessive desire to create as much wealth as possible over the shortest possible period of time – and it’s this ‘get rich quick’ mentality that makes it difficult for investors to maintain their gains and stick to a strict investment plan. It’s been proven that a woman’s hormonal cycle can influence her tolerance for risk, whilst men with higher testosterone levels have a greater propensity for risk than their lesser-fuelled peers. When taking investment decisions with their fellow investors, people tend to take riskier decisions than when on their own, and people who’ve just made a lot of money will be less cautious when it comes to risk-taking in general.

KEEP YOUR RETIREMENT GOALS IN MINDAccepting that the investment graph will rise and fall many times over one’s long-term investment horizon is the first step towards adhering to a well-constructed investment plan. As difficult as it may appear, the answer lies in the ability to de-sensitise oneself to the inevitability of market fluctuations and ensure that one remains invested to achieve a pre-determined set of retirement goals. Successful investing towards long-term and sustainable wealth is about remaining focused on one’s financial plan, unaffected by market noise and vigilant against the ever-destructive nature of greed.

Following the tea we were treated to a guided tour of the many gardens on the estate. We admired the 300 year old camphor trees, giant oaks and a copse of yellow wood trees that one reaches by crossing a suspension bridge over the Lourens River. We passed numerous camellia bushes and made a mental note to return in flowering season July/August. There are a variety of landscapes to explore at Vergelegen, including a playground for the children, a museum with artefacts from the early settlers, and of course some good restaurants for refreshments and beautiful relaxing views of the Hottentot Holland Mountains. speaks to the Muse about the centre built in Lower

Crossroads aimed at uplifting a community devastated by poverty

and Aids.

Vaughan StannardPinelander and medical doctor Vaughan Stannard has a passion for justice and mercy. He tells me about his work as Executive Director of Beautiful Gate, as we weave our way through the streets of Crossroads to see one of the after-school care centres set up within the suburb, where children can have a meal, protection and some help with homework. Started in 1994 by a Dutch couple for Aids orphans, Beautiful Gate has grown into a centre which not only provides clinics for HIV sufferers and a children's home, but also facilities that cater for improved education outcomes, life skills training, family counselling and care in a suburb struggling with high unemployment, drug abuse and HIV.

VAUGHAN'S JOURNEY TO BEAUTIFUL GATEVaughan first heard about Beautiful Gate when his wife Corné taught Sunday school there. During his palliative care training at UCT he used to help out at the children's home, and was struck by the lack of medical care facilities, nursing, drugs for HIV treatment and the number of children dying from Aids related diseases.Realising he would have to find funding if

he planned to help out full time, Vaughan planned to earn some UK pounds. Around this time his Mom passed away and while he was struggling to secure a job overseas, a couple in Hout Bay offered funding for him to be able to work at Beautiful Gate full time. By now his wife was looking after their two children Ben and Ethan at home and running a home business. At first, much of his work revolved around treatment at the HIV clinics. Now, he does limited medical care and is more involved in overseeing and managing the many projects established at Beautiful Gate.

THE RESOURCE CENTREA tour of the Beautiful Gate facility reveals a well maintained centre with computer facilities for education, career guidance, job opportunities, job applications and life skills training. It is a place where the community can source information, which up to now, has been out of their reach.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMESAs well as emotional support and a place of safety for children who have been orphaned, Beautiful Gate also offers after-school homework support. Seen in the

photograph above is a group displaying the "Laptop Desks" – a novel idea for children who have no workspace of their own to do homework. One Crossroads resident, 13 year old Siphelele, has taken on the responsibility of helping a group of children with their homework. He says he likes to help people and is happy to share his knowledge. Mature and independent for his age, he even went as far as asking a neighbour if he could use her garage as a classroom for after-school.

PREVENTIVE SOCIAL WORKThe social workers at Beautiful Gate offer support to child headed families and carers who take orphans into their own homes.

John Rae

Pinelander John Rae is the National Director of Mercy Ships, which owns the world's largest civilian hospital ship, the Africa Mercy. What began as a few days a month of volunteer work, has become a full time occupation that John would not change for anything.

On a tour of the Africa Mercy we spoke to John about his role with Mercy Ships, the work they do and how one can get involved in this incredibly rewarding outreach organisation. The ship, Africa Mercy, brings hope and healing to the forgotten poor - equipped with five operating theatres, recovery wards, laboratories, a CT scanner, X-ray equipment, and 450 volunteer crew traveling to countries in Africa where they have been invited to screen the population for conditions that can be repaired by surgery or cured by medical treatment. As well as eye health and eye related surgeries the ship offers maxillo-facial, reconstructive, orthopaedic, and dental surgeries as well as plastic surgery.

JOHN RAE - THE PINELANDERJohn and his wife Rose have lived in Pinelands since 1986. They have two married children Duncan and Linda, who also live in Pinelands. Working as the National Director has become a 24/7 job with John's major roles being fund raising and awareness. John sometimes feels that he is "stealing time" when he takes time off at the weekend, to watch sport or to play a round of golf. His work is done from offices in Cape Town, although he has visited the ship in West Africa as part of a fund raising exercise for potential donors. Aside from fund sourcing, there is the changeover of short term volunteers to manage, making sure of continuity in treatment. One of the greatest challenges is putting a system in place that deals with the volume of patients in a slick, efficient way. All volunteers sponsor their own time on the ship and John is no exception, with funding provided by his church, family and interested funders.

THE EFFECT OF THE EBOLA CRISISDuring the ten month stay in the Congo, the Africa Mercy carried out 2524 free surgical procedures to the poorest of the poor in the region. The plan was to move to Guinea, to continue the medical service, but the outbreak of Ebola forced the organisation to make an alternative arrangement. The ship is not equipped to deal with the infectious nature of the

Ebola virus, so rather than putting all the volunteers and patients at risk, they returned to Cape Town for restocking and maintenance and then left for Madagascar in mid October.THE LIFE OF A VOLUNTEERWorking on the Mercy Ship is no "free cruise". As John says "It is the hardest job you will ever love". Volunteers come from all over the world and are skilled medical workers, maintenance, cleaning, marketing, media and clerical workers, who not only give their time, but pay their own way on the ship. It is important to be socially compatible and adaptable because the living quarters are small, and the work is plentiful and hard. The reward, however, is enormous and satisfying – helping people to see, and removing life threatening tumours is a daily occurrence. TRAINING EYE SURGEONSFOR WORK IN THE EASTERN CAPEIn the Mercy Vision project Mercy Ships have partnered with eye care health providers in the Eastern Cape, providing training in cataract surgery, optometry, and the implementation of the Mercy Vision Zithulele Eye Care Centre in rural Eastern Cape. They aim to establish mobile teams that can service areas further afield.

Dr Louise Wigens, a General Practitioner practicing from Mutualpark in Pinelands, was lucky enough to accompany her partner, Rob Tarr on a trip of a lifetime! Rob won the Oceans of Life photographic competition in October 2013 and the prize was a trip for two to Norway, Spitsbergen in June this year."Day 1 We went via Amsterdam to Oslo, then flew north to Longyearbyen in the Arctic circle. This is the land of the midnight sun, so the next nine days had no sunsets, just "golden light" all the time!We set sail from Longyearbyen on the Akademik Sergio Vavilov, the ship chartered by One Oceans Expeditions. The snow was thick in some areas which hindered our hiking opportunities but it added to the majesty of the scenery. There was plenty of sea ice and floes - with wildlife on icebergs and on land. The expedition leader changed course according to the ice pack, ensuring we didn't get trapped. Temperatures ranged from zero to 100

Celsius. I had expected it to be colder. Careful planning went into the choice of clothing for the trip, although the ship issued wet weather gear and gumboots to all the guests, under which we had layers of warm tops. The advice is to dress like an onion; layers, layers, layers! Day 2 started with a hearty breakfast, Polar Bear safety guidelines and then a cruise in the Zodiac along the 14th of July Glacier. This glacier was named by a French expedition after Bastille Day. A glacier is an accumulation of layers of snow, transformed over time by their own weight into a mass of ice that persists year after

year. During the warmer months calving occurs – huge chunks of ice break away from the face of the glacier - and as a result icebergs are created. The more compressed the air inside the snow becomes, the bluer the colour. After lunch our zodiac took us to an island, Bloomstrandhalvoya, where we saw our first Svalbard reindeer as well as long tailed Arctic Skua. Dinner was a four course meal every night so I slept like a baby, blissfully unaware of the shining sun.Day 3 We visited an historical site at Smeerenburg or Blubbertown, where Bowhead whale were hunted more than 350 years ago. En route we were lucky enough to see an Arctic fox stealing an egg from right under a Barnacle Goose! Whilst on shore Rob noticed some walrus swimming past, one rather curious fellow spy hopped out of the water 50m in front of us to take a look at one of the other boats. It made for a fabulous photo.Day 4 was a particularly chilly day, and our excursion took us to Sallyhamna where we saw polar bear prints in the snow but alas no polar bear. Hot gluhwein awaited us on returning to the ship which was a welcome treat! During the afternoon we crossed 80 degrees north. Day 5 We woke to an announcement that a polar bear had been seen on the pack ice. Cameras and tripods were carried up on deck. The bear was walking from left to right in front of us at a distance. He stopped to roll around in the snow as well as to shake off the icicles. It felt like we had our own special show, and this was definitely the highlight of the trip. An unforgettable moment!

Later that evening we sailed south to Magdelenafjord where we cruised past basking bearded seals, saw a gazillion Little Auks flying to and fro and more walrus. Day 6 We went to Lillyhook Breen in the morning where we saw King Eiders and Arctic Terns as well as black-legged Kittiwakes and Atlantic Puffins. Birders paradise! The afternoon excursion was at Ny-Alysund where the most northern community lives on Spitsbergen. Most of the inhabitants are involved with polar research. Our passports were stamped and we saw the world's most northern post office. Day 7 We landed at Rechercerfjord where there was an old hunting hut that was slipping downhill – a beautiful site for Rob to take landscape shots. We also managed to hike on the glacial moraine as the snow was less deep here. Tundra (plants) could be seen in the patches where the snow had melted and beautiful flowers, mosses and grasses were starting to bloom. During our afternoon excursion at Bourbonhamna we once again looked for polar bears. Day 8 At Alkehornet we hiked and photographed an Arctic fox, while some crazy people had an Arctic swim. En route back to the ship we were fortunate to see Beluga Whales frolicking in the icy water. The rest of the afternoon was spent organizing photographs to share with our fellow travellers, paying our personal account and having farewell drinks with new friends. Would I do it again? Yes, yes, yes! This trip was the most awe inspiring and breath-taking of all my travels. I would gladly go back and yearn to go to Antarctica!"

IS YOUR CHILDEMOTIONALLY READY FOR SCHOOL?When we read about what we need to do with our children whilst they are growing up, we all talk about physical activities and toys. Marketing is powerful and the bias is towards educational toys yet not much is said about EQ. When our little one is approaching pre-school, we all look at how well they know their colours, can count, and possibly even read; yet many of them are not emotionally ready for more formal learning.

DEVELOPING EQ TAKES TIMESo how does one prepare one's child? It is not something that one can do overnight as it is a slow process from when they are very young. As they are able, one needs to let them gain independence. This can be done by doing very simple tasks in the beginning such as carrying their plate back to the kitchen. This should be done every day so that they master the task

without having to be told, thereby gaining confidence and independence. Praise them – it works wonders! They can also start by washing themselves in the bath. I know that with our busy lives it is so much easier to do it ourselves but they are not benefiting from it. Let them rub soap on the sponge and rub their arms. When they achieve that, praise them and after a long time, add another limb to the list. Slowly they will be able to do it themselves with you standing by and encouraging them. Possibly one can make up a song about cleaning your left arm and then your right arm and in this way, they are learning rhythm as well as vocabulary. One can also encourage them to start cleaning their own teeth. We all know that they will not do a great job but that is not the point. It is so important for them to feel that they are becoming independent. Your story-line could be something like two people clean little children’s teeth, first the child and then the mum. This way you ensure that the teeth are actually cleaned!

DRESSING THEMSELVES BY PRE-SCHOOLOne of the important tasks that should be accomplished by the time they reach pre-school is dressing. One needs to start this as a very slow process. You can start by naming each item as you dress them and possibly why you are making them wear it. (continued on page 16).

Explain why they are wearing long pants or why they are wearing a summer dress. Then, as they get older, let them assist, let them help putting their pants on. Make a song out of it too! It turns into a fun learning experience.

BEING SECURE ON THEIR OWNAssist your child with separation. This again is a slow process and by the time they reach pre-school, they should be able to separate from the parent without a problem. This does not mean that suddenly out of the blue you drop your child off at a friend or another parent, but that one starts off by leaving the room and they remain behind. Or, with one parent nearby, you go into the garden whilst they remain behind with the other parent. Slowly one extends the time period as they are able to cope with the process. From there you can have tea with a friend who also has a small child and you can leave them alone to play outside whilst you are within sight but a distance away. Slowly they will learn that you will come back and they will feel secure. One can then, as one proceeds through the process, extend it till they are happy to spend time with gran and eventually they will be able to spend the night.

BE FIRM WITH UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOURAn important step in building EQ is to have your child take responsibility for his actions. Give your child an explanation as to why their behaviour was inappropriate. If they repeat the behaviour, then bring in a consequence, again explaining why it is being given. Also, make them aware of how the other person is feeling should they have done something to their sibling or friend. Be firm. Make it very clear that it is not accepted. Most of all do not laugh at what they have done. When it is a negative behaviour they enjoy the result and this makes them do it again just to hear you laugh!

PREPARE CHILDREN FOR THE REAL WORLDChildren learn early on how to use emotions to manipulate you. It is surprising how good they can get at this. Parents give in to their children and by doing this it teaches them that if they make a scene whether it be crying or sulking or screaming, they get what they want. But alas, this is not the true world and we do them no favours by teaching them this. If there is something that they have done incorrectly it is very important to sort it out immediately. There is so much more that one can do to foster EQ but these ideas will get you a long way! Enjoy your parenting!

1 onion, chopped2 baby marrows, thinly sliced3 spinach leaves, shredded or sliced1 tbsp (15 ml) dried origanum or 2 tbsp (30 ml) chopped fresh origanum1 slice feta, crumbledlemon juice and black pepper to taste6 eggs

1. Heat oil and pan-fry onion and baby marrows until just soft.

2. Add spinach and herbs and fry until spinach just wilts. Remove from heat, stir in half of the feta and season to taste with lemon juice and pepper.

3. Divide mixture between 6 lightly greased, heat proof cups or ramekins. Choose cups or bowls that will fit into a saucepan or frying pan, so that it can be covered with a lid.

4. Bring 3 cm of water in the saucepan to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

5. Crack an egg into each cup, over veggies and sprinkle with remaining feta. Carefully place cups in water in pan and fill with more boiling water if necessary - cups should stand halfway in water.

6. Cover and reduce the heat. Simmer gently for 8-10 minutes or until the egg yolks are cooked to your preference. Serve with black pepper and fruit, a slice of wholewheat toast, avo or tomato.
