There are two species of 'seagull' that are found in Pinelands. Hartlaub's Gull, which breeds mainly along the coast, will come inland to feed and is found in big numbers along the Black River, and on school fields in Pinelands, where they forage for scraps. It has a beautiful silvery-grey back and elegant, dark red bill. Hartlaub's Gull is restricted to the cold Benguela Current along the coasts of South Africa and Namibia and the main population in the world is around Cape Town. The much larger Kelp Gull is more coastal and tends to arrive in Pinelands only ahead of large winter storms that push them inland. A MEMORABLE WINTER EXPERIENCEOur niece from Australia recently returned for a holiday in Cape Town. This was the perfect excuse for us to enjoy a stay-over at one of our favourite 'local' game parks – Buffelsfontein (which is up the West Coast, just past Yserfontein). Over the past few years we have enjoyed many Summer days and nights here with family so we have happy memories of sitting round the braai in shorts and tee-shirt, watching the animals at the waterhole.

Since our niece had never been here to share those times, we decided that, although it was wintery and very wet, we should nevertheless go so she could share the experience and appreciate it when we spoke about the place.Needless to say, it was a very different experience to our Summer visit. My initial reaction was one of disappointment that it was 'not the same' as in Summer, as the miserable weather was a literal damper on the works. However as we spent time doing very little and watching the wildlife I realised that the animals behaved exactly the same as ever – they just ignored the cold and rain and got on with their lives, doing what they always do. Gradually, as I stopped fighting the vain desire to relive the same experience as before, I came to realise that it was simply a different one to what we had shared previously.

Towards the end of our time there we had a game drive in freezing and rainy conditions. I would not normally imagine myself enjoying this, but bundled up in the warm coats supplied to us, it became quite an adventure, like we were seeing nature on its own terms and in its true colours and not as a comfortable amusement ride as it was in Summer.We now share a unique experience which we would not have had if we had shied away because the weather wasn't 'good enough.' So thank you, Cape Winter, for the memorable time you gave us. I hope you enjoy our Winter edition!

Is Occupation before Transfer a wise thing or not?

I recently became aware of two instances where occupation of a property before transfer had taken place. This created financial stress for the sellers and the question that needs to be asked, is whether occupation of the property by the buyer before transfer of ownership is advisable?In the first instance a property was sold for cash and the full purchase price of the property in the amount of R3m was paid into the trust account of the attorney. The purchaser was then given occupation before transfer.When the conveyancing attorney called for the Transfer Duty receipt the Receiver of Revenue noticed that the purchaser’s tax affairs were not up to date and requested that the attorney attach the full purchase price in terms of Section 99 of the Income Tax Act. The purchaser was also wanted for money laundering. The

nett result was that the sale collapsed, but worst of all, the purchaser refuses to vacate the premises which is now going to necessitate an eviction order and further costs.In the second instance a property was supposedly sold for cash. A deposit was lodged but before any guarantees for the outstanding balance of the purchase price was given the seller allowed the purchaser to take occupation. It is now nine months down the line, and the balance of the purchase price is still not forthcoming with the purchaser making all sorts of promises about the rest of the money.Our advice is to rather not give occupation before the property has been transferred to the new purchaser, other than in exceptional circumstances, but more about this in my next article.

The Lions Club of Pinelands will have a fundraiser at the Cincinnati Spur in Howard Centre on the 8 July. The Lions will assist the waitrons between 6pm and 9pm. A portion of each bill paid during that time will be donated to community projects. See the display in the Pinelands Library showcasing the Lions projects which include food donations to five shelters, to an educare in Brooklyn, bingo with seniors at Riverside in Thornton, wool for beanies, mittens and booties for Mowbray Maternity Hospital, and materials for making Foo Foo dolls which are currently donated to the children at Beautiful Gate.

The Umlilo camp is an initiative designed to teach leadership skills through outdoor adventure challenges, discussion and theory. Modules focus on communication, goal setting, cooperation, team building, conflict resolution – and fun. It has been said that "education is the lighting of a fire, not the filling of a bucket". The concept of Umlilo – fire – is exactly that – the opportunity to give children the greatest possible motivation to achieve their potential in a supported and positive environment.

Pinelands can be proud of the months of hard work done by the Dance Co pupils who took part in the show at the Baxter at the end of May. It was a wonderful production of high quality dance by pupils ranging in age from 5 years upwards, doing a variety of dances including ballet, modern, contemporary and musical theatre. DISCOVERING ONE OF THE FIRST SCHOOLS IN PINELANDS − SCAN LEA SCHOOLWhen my wife Jenny and I went house hunting nearly 15 years ago and looked at a property in Serpentine Street in Pinelands, we were immediately struck by something special about the double storey house. Apart from having ‘kerb appeal’, as we walked through the big oak front door and saw the spacious rooms and solid old style 1920’s architecture, we were captivated by its charm.Built around 1927 in what is now termed ‘Olde Pinelands’, the house first became a school in 1935 and continued as one until approximately 1952. We discovered that it was called Scan Lea apparently from a combination of the names of the first headmistress, a Miss Anderson and Amy Nixon. Miss Nixon had previously run a kindergarten for boys and girls’ from a garage in a property in nearby Southway. After retiring as headmistress of the Collegiate School for Girls in Port Elizabeth, Miss Anderson decided to start the school in Pinelands.

The assembly room, which included a piano, was situated in the original lounge with its fireplace (it is a study today). It was also used as a classroom, along with the dining room, the original garage and an outside room. Upstairs there was a six bed dormitory and another one with 2 beds, both for boarders. Only a limited number of boarders were accommodated.As the school grew in the 1930’s, a house further up Serpentine Street was rented to cater for the senior classes. In the early years Scan Lea was extremely successful academically and we were able to track down a number of the former pupils.Jean Boock (neé Jefferies) and Patti Sides, who attended the school in the 1940s, were particularly helpful in tracing its history by providing various dates, teachers’ names and other recollections, such as the story of sisters Pam and Betty Nichols, two Second World war evacuees, taken in by the school for five years. They were sent to safety in South Africa by their parents during the

terrible bombing raids on England by the Luftwaffe. Several years ago a highly successful reunion was organised by Patti for 15 former pupils of Scan Lea during the 1940’s. It also emerged that Patti’s mother Dorothy Sides ran the first shop in Pinelands, called The Wattle House in Central Square, serving tea and coffee, cakes and also sold a variety of sweets.Reminiscing about the school Jean and Patti were able to remember some of the other teachers during the 1940’s including Mrs Archer, Miss Forbes, Mrs Mac Robert, Mrs Worsick, Miss Dunthorn and Mrs Rowley who amongst them taught subjects such as English, Latin, History, French, Arithmetic and Botany. Mrs Archer was the Gym mistress.While we have done some research on Scan Lea there are probably many gaps, so if any of The Muse’s readers have recollections or even photos which may be useful we would be grateful for their input. email: [email protected] or phone 021 531 3789.

There were scrumptious eats, lucky draws and the guest speaker was Mrs Linnell Holland who spoke movingly about Alexa Kirsten’s life. A book has been written about Alexa (Fuff) Kirsten by Rachel Hunter entitled The Colours of Africa.

Kirstenbosch Tree Top Walk - the Boomslang

The Kirstenbosch Centenary Canopy Walkway was built to celebrate the opening of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden 100 years ago and the 100 year partnership of the gardens with the Botanical Society of South Africa. The design follows the shape of a Boomslang, with gentle curves along the route and the shaped sides giving one the feel of walking inside the snake. The structure was erected with as little damage

to the surrounding ecology as possible, and from the ground below it is well camouflaged. The flexible steel structure was built to allow movement, which we clearly felt the day we went − pensioners day I think. It is also wheelchair friendly.Well worth a visit for the stunning views over the garden and the opportunity to view plants and birds from the tree tops 12 meters above the ground. There is no

extra cost to walk on the boomslang, it is included in the gate entry fee.Finding the boomslang was a little tricky at first. We were sent up to the arboretum – quite a steep walk up from the lower entrance. From there one follows the signs toward the enchanted forest. Access is also possible at the 'other end' of the snake from an area near the cycads and the Colonel's Bird Bath.

PAYING FOR THE FUNERALWhen a person passes, their bank accounts are immediately frozen and the family will need access to sufficient funds to cover funeral and other expenses. A funeral benefit will pay out within 48 hours, or one can set aside an emergency fund to ensure provision for the funeral costs.

YOUR EXECUTORThe Executor performs a vital role in winding up your estate and distributing your assets to your nominated heirs, so it is strongly advised that you appoint someone with sound financial and administrative skills. Have the following documents in safe-keeping and make sure close family are aware of them:Your Will: Check your Will to make sure that it is dated and signed, and make sure that you destroy all copies of previous Wills.Your beneficiaries: Draw up a complete list of all your beneficiaries and heirs, together with their ID and contact numbers, in a simple document kept in central place.Your bank accounts: To avoid the Executor having to search for your banking information, prepare a list of all the accounts in your name, with associated PIN or login numbers.

Your property: To prevent delays keep a copy of all property title deeds, as well as all vehicle registration papers, in your files.Insurance policies: Make sure that beneficiaries are clearly marked on insurance policies, and that copies of the policies can be easily found. Your financial planner and financial plan: Retain the latest copy of your financial plan, as well as your financial advisor’s details close on hand. Wrapping up your financial affairs will go quicker if your Executor is able to consult with your financial planner.Investment documents: Make a list of all your pension funds, retirement annuities, share portfolios or living annuities together with policy numbers. Your Executor will need to conduct a search for all investments registered in your name in order to complete the Liquidation and Distribution Account.Memberships: Another way to expedite the winding up process is to leave a list of all memberships and accounts that would need to be closed. This would include the likes of gym membership, petrol cards, medical aid membership, clothing accounts and cell phone contracts.Your creditors: In terms of South African law, all creditors of a deceased estate are to be paid in full before the estate is distributed amongst the nominated heirs. Compile a list of creditors and their contact details in your file, so that the Executor will know who needs to be paid.Organ donation: Ensure that your loved ones are aware of your membership with the Organ Donation Foundation, and that the contact details are readily available.Your life online: Compile a list of all online accounts, user names and passwords. Nominate a technically savvy person that you trust implicitly to manage the closure process of your online presence in a sensitive manner.Prepare today to ensure that the aftermath of your passing can be spent celebrating your life and appreciating the legacy that you worked so hard to gift.

Winter was hard for our cave dwelling ancestors – huddling in their cold dwellings with little food to be caught or harvested, the long, dark nights must have taken away the will to get out and do anything. Over the centuries, the convenience of modern technology has reduced the effect of the seasons on our daily life and given us the means to defy the weather to do what we want, when we want – we drive in our warm cars to shops stocked with any produce, all year round. We have everything we need to keep our routine relatively constant through the seasons.But, even with this convenience, it’s not so easy for us to shrug off our inherited physical response to the various seasons.

Our natural reaction to the cold and dullness of winter is a slowing of the rhythm of our life to conserve energy, to stay closer to home and seek the shelter of our “cave.’

In May the Muse reported on local scientist Simon Broadley who studied at the HERCULES synchrotron facility in France, as part of the initiatives to celebrate 2014 as the centenary of Crystallography. Physicist Max von Laue, born in Coblenz in Germany in 1879, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1914 for his discovery of the diffraction of X-rays by crystals and it is from this knowledge that extensive uses have blossomed, instrumental in many spheres of life from agriculture, aeronautics, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, cosmetics, computers, and mining.

PINELANDS FAMILY CONNECTIONTO MAX VON LAUEThe Muse was delighted to hear that there are family descendants of Max von Laue living in Pinelands. We went to meet them and hear the story of how the family comes to be in South Africa. One would think it would be quite daunting to know that your great-grandfather worked with both Max Planck and Albert Einstein, that he has a lunar crater and an asteroid named after him, as well as the prestigious neutron facility in Grenoble the Institut Laue–Langevin. Max von Laue's great grandchildren Thomas, Philipp and Benjamin Credé take this knowledge in their stride …

HOW DID THE DESCENDANTS OF VON LAUE COME TO BE IN SOUTH AFRICA.Max von Laue and his wife Magdalena had two children − a son Theodore who became a History Professor, and a daughter Hilde from whom our Pinelands

families are descended. Hilde had three daughters, one of whom was Jutta, mother to Thomas, Philipp and Benjamin. Jutta and her husband Helfried Credé started their married life in Germany. Helfried, a physicist, was concerned for the future of his children during the Cold war, and since he had visited South Africa in the seventies, he decided in 1983 to bring his family to South Africa. During the oil crisis of the seventies Helfried had invented and patented a heat pump system, but this was “before its time” for use in South Africa so he worked in property for a while until he purchased a farm in the Eastern Cape and began growing Jojoba. He knew nothing of farming or cold pressed oils. However, the business grew and in 1990 he sold the farm and moved to Somerset West where the Credé factory operates, supplying cold pressed oils including coconut oil, and olive oil as well as nut butters.

WHAT CAREERS HAVE THEOTHER CHILDREN FOLLOWED?In all, Helfried and Jutta had 6 boys and one girl. The eldest a girl called Bettina lives in Geneva and is a translator. Thomas a Pinelander is a medical doctor working at Groote Schuur Hospital. Marcus is a Professor of Psychology in the USA, Andreas is also a medical doctor and lives in the UK, Christopher is working for MSF (Doctors Without Borders) in the DRC. Philipp and Benjamin run the Credé Natural Oils cold−pressed oils factory in Somerset West. Benjamin also lives in Pinelands. The wider family as a whole celebrates

their heritage and they keep in contact by having family reunions in France.

LINK TO PINELANDSThomas (Tom) is the first medical doctor in the family. He met and married his wife Jenna in the UK They live with their daughter Georgie in Pinelands, which they consider a friendly cosmopolitan community – persevering after their house burnt down in 2011 when the thatch caught alight. Benjamin was drawn to Pinelands because his brother was there and has stayed to raise his family here too. He has visited the University of Frankfurt and seen where his great-grandfather worked. He was surprised by the awe of his hosts because he doesn’t feel he deserves any respect because of Max von Laue’s achievements. The memorabilia from Max von Laue have been gifted to the Frankfurt University.

NO EXPECTATIONSOne thing the brothers agree on is that world class scientists usually excel in world class environments, with high calibre science teachers and facilities. They feel their lives have progressed naturally and without undue influence or pressure from their families – their great-grandfather had everyday pastimes and hobbies as we all do and enjoyed mountain climbing, hiking sailing, skiing, motor cycles and motor cars. They have no unreasonable expectations for their children because of the brilliance of their forefathers and hope they lead happy fulfilled lives.

FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABESAs Miss Elaine Holmes prepares for retirement, she chuckles at her only regret − that she did not make a written compilation of the priceless 'sayings of the moment' from the children she has taught over the years. She remembers asking a new Grade 1 "what sound do you hear at the beginning of the word bird"? The confident answer was "tweet, tweet".

EARN RESPECT, RECOGNISE EFFORTElaine feels that respect from parents and from the children must be earned. She has strived to establish a firm foundation for the learners to build their lives upon, to be independent and motivated. Recognition for the effort that children put into what they do is important and their first 100 days at school is celebrated with happy activities incorporating all they have learned.

CHILDREN GROW THROUGH READINGAlong with Maths and Life Skills there is a strong emphasis on reading. Elaine concentrates on using fun techniques to open the doors of literature − and the world to the children. In the first term, the Grade 1 classes have a "Once upon a time" theme where well−known authors and books are promoted. Says Elaine "The more you read, the more you grow, assimilating knowledge and making it a part of yourself".

CHANGES OVER THE YEARSThere have been a number of changes in Pinelands and at the Blue School, since Elaine began her teaching career in January 1973. In the early days children used to cycle or walk to school, and then go home for the lunch break, but now the bicycle shed has been transformed into classrooms, and children stay at school all day. The Blue School has grown into a diverse community school catering for

various cultures and religions. There is a preschool, and an after care section, a large swimming pool and artificial grass in the quad for sport. They now have a well equipped media room and a computer lab.

GROWTH OF THE MUSIC DEPARTMENTThe music department has grown and gives Elaine much pleasure at the annual cabaret, music concerts and the year−end carol evening. "The children display enormous musical talent" says Elaine, and comments on the success of a former pupil Jimmy Nevis who has released a couple of albums of his own. The orchestra gives pupils the opportunity to learn many instruments. Recently the music department staff wrote the "school spirit song" encapsulating the school ethos. Reflecting on the words, Miss Holmes says, "The Blue School will live on in my heart evermore."

A FAMILY OF TEACHERSElaine grew up in Pinelands in a family of teachers. Her father was a circuit inspector. Her uncle, sister and cousin are all teachers. Her training was at The Cape Town Training College, completing the Foundation Phase course followed by further studies including a remedial teaching diploma through Unisa. Until recently, Elaine had been a lifeline counsellor, for 22 years − her way of giving back to society.

BROADENING ONE'S HORIZONSElaine enjoys travelling and has had the opportunity to visit friends in the UK,

Australia, Israel, and Germany, where she attended the moving Passion Play at Oberammergau. She visited the previous headmaster, Mr Bruce Phillips, in Santiago Chile, and along the way has added to her collection of teaspoons and crafted angels.

REFLECTIONSLooking back over 42 years, Elaine says it has been a privilege to be part of the Blue School family. Teaching young children can be rewarding and challenging. It is an awesome responsibility to shape children's attitudes and influence their future learning. To the children of the Blue School, Miss Holmes says "Enjoy the privilege of being part of such a special school; take advantage of the opportunities offered to you and work hard to achieve your dreams." Elaine reflects on the lifetime friendships formed with colleagues and urges teachers to support, encourage and respect each other, and hold onto the wonderful camaraderie at the Blue School.

HAPPY RETIREMENTCape Town born and bred Elaine acknowledges that teaching is a full time career with responsibilities extending beyond office hours. Elaine still wishes to have some involvement with teaching, but retirement will offer something she has not had a great deal of over the past 42 years − me time. We congratulate Elaine on her long service at the Blue School and wish her all the best for a happy retirement.

During Grades 11 and 12 Elaine Holmes had plenty of opportunity to engage with children while helping out at the Rondebosch Cottage Hospital, and teaching at Sunday School. Her career choice was teaching and so began Elaine's successful and happy career as a primary school teacher. Retirement at the end of 2014 marks 42 years for Elaine, at The Pinelands Primary School, the Blue School.

Cape for the past 28 years to play against six or seven other clubs in Port Elizabeth, Plettenberg Bay, Grahamstown, Kenton, Graaff Reinet, Oudtshoorn and Knysna.The tour is a reciprocal one for the Eastern Province Vets tennis tour to Cape Town which has been continuous for over 60 years. This team is composed of players from many Eastern Cape towns and clubs. Players’ ages range from 50 to 70 years.What makes the Pinelands Tour so special is that to the best of our knowledge no other single club in S.A. (in the world?) does anything like this, and while on occasion we have had one or two guest players from other clubs this is essentially a Pinelands Tennis Club Tour. The Blue Shirts in our team picture commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Pinelands Tennis Club which was inaugurated in 1923.The first tour in 1987 was organized by Arthur Fuller − then chair of PTC − in response to challenges by the regular Eastern Province Vets team that has toured the Cape every year for the last 60 years. Original 1987 members and stalwarts of this Tour were Mickey Mc Millan who went on 20 consecutive tours leading 18 and Bob Low who went on 23, Neville Balfour 18 and Des Brown 17 also consecutively. Current member Tony Butt has done 18 (leading six) ably assisted by Al Wylie 9 and Brian Addison 8.10 members in total have done more than 10 tours. GET READY FOR PRE−SCHOOLSchools are interviewing children for their Pre−School intake and I am sure that they are suggesting ways in which parents can assist their children to make the transition into school easier.LEARNING TO BE INDEPENDENTThe most important thing is for your child to be independent (age appropriate) as this may be the first time that they will be separated from their parents. In order for this process to run smoothly, one could start by choosing another adult that you respect and trust, and leave your little one with them. Start by leaving your child for a few minutes (pop out to the car) and slowly increase the time until your child can be left with them without any fuss at all.

ACCOMPLISHING SMALL TASKSGive your little one small tasks that they can accomplish and when they have done this, lots of praise should be given. It usually starts by them saying “I can do it….”, and then we need to have lots of patience while they attempt to do the task they have decided on. When going out, give them something to carry or take along as well, even if it is only the shopping bag. At the appropriate time request the bag and thank them for taking such good care of it.

EXPLAINING RESPONSIBILITYWith the progressing of their independence comes responsibility. Explain to them how important the carrying of the shopping bag is. One is going to purchase too many items to carry and the need of the bag is important. There is also a saving by not

having to purchase a bag at the till and by saving money families will eventually be able to purchase something that can be enjoyed together. If we have a very casual attitude regarding responsibility, our children will learn the same attitude from us – I call it silent learning and the message is that it is not important to be responsible. Be aware that they are, without realizing it, watching our every move and behaviour. What we do as adults has to be the right way as we are the Mums and Dads.

THE BEST REWARD IS NOT MATERIALThe best reward we can give is praise and hugs. These are worth far more than material objects. Children soak up the positive response they get and will do things for you to receive that special hug and words telling them that you are so proud of them. If a child has had a really good week, one can do an activity with them that they love. It is interesting to see what they choose out of their previous experiences of life as a reward. These are the things that they will remember and if they don’t, then rest assured that you have created a loving and caring environment and this in itself is a gift that they will use as adults when they have their own children.

TEACHING CHILDREN TO ACCEPT DECISIONSAnother aspect one can work on to encourage independence, is to teach your child what “yes” and “no” means. Explain to them why you have made the decision and stick to it. If they have a tantrum, ignore this. If you give attention in any way, you are indirectly rewarding them. They have your

attention, your time and this is what they are aiming for and so you are reinforcing their negative behaviour.

START SLOWLYGet them to listen to instructions. First start off by giving them one instruction that they must carry out. It can be anything from helping carry something to fetching something, or assisting with any task which occurs in the home. When they have mastered this and you have been praising them, increase it to two instructions. If they have difficulty in doing this, get down to their level and get them to repeat the two instructions and then let them do it. You can encourage them along the way if needed. Then increase this to three instructions.

THE VALUE OF BOUNDARIESLastly, give your children boundaries. Children thrive within boundaries. Yes, they will attempt to ‘push the boundaries’ but that is what children do. If there are no firm boundaries, children will then push even further till some are set. This becomes very difficult when they are teenagers and you are suddenly trying to pull in the reins when they are behaving inappropriately.

GOOD BEHAVIOUR IN PUBLICIn conclusion – a good thing to remember is that you need to provide children with a strong sense of good behaviour so that when they are out in public or somewhere without you, they will behave in an acceptable manner which will make you proud! That is when you know that you have succeeded.

RACING IN MELAKA AND PUTRAJAYAOn May 25, a crew of 12 Dragon boating enthusiasts winged their way to Malaysia to participate in an international Dragon Boating Festival which took place in two cities. The 250m races were in Melaka − the Historical City of Malaysia. The 500m races took place in Putrajaya, which was planned as a true garden and environmentally conscious city, with 38% of the area reserved for green spaces, including a state of the art race venue.

SILVER MEDALSThe Belles did really well, and managed to reach two semi-finals. A couple of times we were one to two seconds behind the boat in front. We won a silver medal in the 500m ‘friendship invitational race’, teaming up with an Australian crew. This means that we were a joint team of survivors.

THE FLOWER CEREMONYThe most emotional moment was the flower ceremony, where 6 Boats joined together, filled with survivors who each held a pink carnation. We sang the song ‘You lift me up’ by Josh Groban and remembered those we have lost to cancer and those who are still fighting. Then all the flowers were spread on the surface of the water. After we disembarked from our

boats, the other crews had formed an arch with their paddles for us to walk through! We must confess many emotional tears were shed.

RACING IN THE HOME OF THE DRAGON BOAT Dragon Boating originated in the East, so to experience racing there was amazing. It was also exhilarating to race against other survivor teams. All in all, there were 9 countries represented, and 40 teams, of which 6 were cancer survivor teams. We had travelled the furthest though!

HOT AND HUMIDThere is a 6 hour time difference between South Africa and Malaysia, and the temperatures were in the 30’s! Plus, the humidity is very high. This took quite some adjusting to, especially when doing highly competitive sport!

DELICIOUS FRUITThe first thing that strikes you about Malaysia is how green everything is. In the interior there is a large area of equatorial jungle, and around Kuala Lumpur, many palm plantations. The abundance of fruit is extravagant, not to mention delicious. Adventurous eaters had an exciting time, but some of us were much more wary.

MULTICULTURAL PEOPLE AND CUISINESMalaysia is officially a Muslim Country,

but has a mix of many ethnicities and nationalities, mainly Chinese and Indian. The variety of cuisine available at virtually every street corner as well as in shopping centres is reflective of the cultures represented in Malaysia. And it was amazing to see that all of the many and huge shopping centres within a very small downtown area, seemed to be full of people all the time.

LEFT HAND DRIVEIn Melaka, the oldest and most historic city in Malaysia, you see a mix of Dutch and Portuguese influence, as well as Indian. The main form of tourist transport there are highly decorated bicycle rickshaws that play loud music and are lit up with neon tubes at night! The British heritage is seen in the useful fact that they drive on the left of the road like we do and all hotels include baked beans for breakfast!

Various versions of this delicious dip have been made, but this version is really yummy and versatile enough to serve with every type of meal. It’s great with eggs for breakfast, as part of a light lunch, a dip with veggies or condiment with fish, chicken or even a burger – the options are endless.
