The goal of this tournament was to support the renovation and move from the Howe Street location to the recently acquired barracks at Ft. Johnston. The event was a tremendous success and the Friends of the NC Maritime Museum at Southport want to thank all of those who worked on the event and who attended and donated to the event for their time and generosity. A check for $28,000 was presented to Walt Madsen and Shirley Wilson, chair and vice-chair respec- tively of the Friends of the NC Maritime Museum at Southport and to Mary Strickland, Mu- seum Curator/Manager, at the conclusion of the day’s activities. The Members Club’s head pro, Anthony Pagliari, started the day off by conducting a driving and chipping demonstration at 10:00 to build confidence in the players. 128 golfers teed off at the shotgun start at 11:00. The excitement around the course could be felt as teams of men, women, and couples competed for prizes and fun. Since having fun and supporting the Museum were the dual objectives of the event, winners were announced and prizes awarded but players’ names will not noted here in fear of jeopardizing their amateur status. At the conclusion of the golf, the players retired to the club house for a social hour including libations and then went in to dinner where they enjoyed a hearty meal of fried chicken, pulled pork, cole slaw, potato salad, biscuits, and brownies. More than 145 people enjoyed the dining experience. Interspersed during the dinner were opportunities to bid on silent auction items, win raffle prizes, and collect more than 100 door prizes. After dinner, a live auction was held where art, an Andrea Doria artifact, golf weekend, and elegant dining ex- periences were bid on. Comments heard around the course and during dinner indicated this was one of the best tournaments ever. The weather was wonderful. The golf was, well, golf. The food was delicious. And the activities were exciting. In short, a good day was had by all. The Friends sincerely wants to thank all of those who supported and participated in this event. Join us as we explore the story of Roanoke Island Festival Park's American Indian Town Exhibit w i t h E d u c a t io n C o o r d i n a t o r T r ac y Hearther. Heather will tell us how the exhibit represents the area's 16th century American Indian community and describe some of their folkways and practices. Her discussion will include the chal-lenges with research, exhibit design, terminology, and longevity of reproductions. Sample some American Indian fare while you listen, provided by the museum. The program will be at the Commu-nity Building, May 18 at 7 pm, and is free of charge. Please call 910-454-0003 to reserve a seat.

Ed Verge, master boat-builder and instructor of the boatbuilding program at Cape Fear allowed us to tour his facility, and walked the group through the process of building a boat in a one or two-year course.

Captain Lee of the Twelve Tribes showed our group around his 150 ft. barquentine, told us the history of his ship, organization, and crew.

Amie Williams, Mu-seum Interpreter, dis-cussed muralist Robert Wyland's 100 Whaling Walls, one of which is on the riverside of the Carolinian Inn down-town Wilmington.

Thank you! We are not here to make history. Our shared pres-

ence at this time and place is accidental but essential

as we collect and preserve the past for the benefit of

those yet to come. Adversity throughout the years has

molded firm friendships, born with unyielding determi-

nation to succeed in each believable goal. The citi-

zens and Friends of the Lower Cape Fear have been

gathering diamond dust, the instrument needed to

polish the undiscovered North Carolina jewel, Fort

Johnston. The sign over the office door reads “Failure is

not an option”. You got that right! - Mary Strickland
