excellence, nurturing respect, happiness and independence.
Issue 300 22nd November 2016
We Went to the Zoo Last Tuesday was a long and tiring day for the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students because we went to the zoo. It was tiring, but it was a really exciting day as well. The 4 hours that we were there seemed to pass by very quickly – until I felt my sore feet at the end of the day. It’s a good thing that the zoo is an enclosed area because the boys in my group seemed to run from place to place all day. I was sure they would get tired eventually, but I think that only happened when we got onto the bus to come back to school. It’s been a while since I visited the zoo, and things have definitely changed there over that time. I was really im-pressed with the quality of the enclosures – especially the Asian themed elephant section. The students had a great day and there has been plenty of work associated with the excursion back here at school. SLU Market The year 5s & 6s held their annual SLU Market last Friday – AND raised over $1,000 for charity. It was a fantastic effort by all in-volved. I don’t know whether it was the busiest stall in the market, but there seemed to be plenty of students willing to pay their mon-ey and throw wet sponges at me when I was suited up and ready to go. Of course I wasn’t the only one who put their head through the hole for a good cause; I saw Krista Carpenter & Christen Anderson. I think it is a wonderful thing to have students doing an activity such as this for the benefit of others in the com-
munity; something that I have not seen done quite so effectively in other places. Well done!
Wishing Tree Speaking of doing something for somebody else in the community, the Wishing Tree is a great example of how MDPS people have done this over a period of time. This year’s tree is in the school foyer, and you can take a star and bring it back attached to a wrapped, appropriately targeted gift and put it under the tree. The gifts are dis-tributed by Steps Outreach, and one of them may be the only gift that a child receives this Christmas. Reporting Day Don’t forget that next Wednesday is a student free day, so designated to enable teachers to complete the gruel-ling task of writing student reports for the second half of the year. House Sports Day Don’t forget, also, that next Wednesday is the date for the rescheduled Mount Dandenong Primary School
House Sports. They will be held at Kalorama Oval. Keep your fingers crossed for a day without rains, but also
without too much sunshine.
Premier’s Reading Challenge I presented (most) Reading Challenge certificates at last week’s assembly – some people had completed the challenge, but the system had not recognised them. That situation has now been resolved, thanks to Julie Fran-cis and a helpful reading challenge official. There is now a large poster in the school foyer congratulating those who completed the challenge.

2017 Student Numbers As you can imagine, there is al great deal of planning and modelling that goes into the structure of the school each year. Much of that work is determined by what we know about how many students we will have attending the school. The more we know, the sooner we know it, the more well organised the school can be. With this in mind, I ask that you please let us know as soon as possible if your children will be moving to another school in 2017. Of course we would also like to know why the move has come about as well – there may be something that we can do to enable you to stay associated with Mount Dandenong Primary. Have a good week Rick Scott

Wishing Tree
There is only 5 weeks until Christmas! Each year we set up our own Wishing Tree in the foyer.
The Wishing Tree provides an ideal way to teach children to think of others, especially those less fortu-
nate.
Simply choose a tag from the tree:
BLUE – for children in Grades Prep – 2
GREEN – for children in Grades 3 and 4
RED – for children in Grades 5 and 6
Purchase and wrap an appropriate gift, attach the tag and
place it under the tree. Including your child in the choice and
wrapping of the gift is a great idea!
The gifts will be collected on Monday 12th December and will
be passed on to “ Steps Outreach Service” (Concern Austral-
ia) which provides support for young homeless people.
Thank you for your support.
Liz Kennedy

Friday’s Possum Café
Friday’s Possum café has been providing our student community with some great nutritious food options this term and continues to be sup-
ported by Ben Higgs from Wild Oak restaurant and the parent communi-ty who have given both their time in the café and as our resident weekly bakers. We have also contributed to our annual fundraising tally consid-erably with our snack service, supporting our student and school com-
munity and services.
I would also like to congratulate our SLU students for putting in the effort and consideration in offering nutritiously healthy stall options at their market last Friday and raising over $200 for the MAI WIRU FOUN-
DATION. Supporting communities in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytiatjara (APY) lands in northern SA run positive programs and
support Indigenous Australians improve their health through improved nutrition. Great work students we are really proud of you giving back in
such a positive, important and healthy way.
We only have 2 weeks of service left for the year so get in and get order-ing.
Our last service will be December 2nd.
Please ensure orders are in promptly Thursday morning for a Friday ser-vice, clearly labelled with name and class on the front of an envelope
with the correct change enclosed.
A big wholesome thank you to our keen and savvy wholefood bakers the past couple of weeks, Adele, Jackie, Alix and our parent helpers during
service. This could not run without you all and any suggestions for meals and baking options moving forward are appreciated.
Students bring your gold coins so you can sample our awesome snacks and always keep an eye out for our free tasters!!
Happy eating!
