VICE PRESIDENT
Oslo may be a small city compared to others aroundthe continent, but its concert calendar holds its ownin terms of quality and frequency. Autumn 2010 hasbeen a particularly kind season to music enthusiasts,
as weve already had quite a few stellar acts maketheir way through the capital. And the year stillpromises several great concert options: read on fora couple of detailed previews, and a brief outline of afew other names and dates.
Nov. 21: Crystal CastlesNailing a description of Crystal Castles can be a bitof a challenge. Teir sound casts a pretty strangecross-section across traditional music genres, sonecessarily, a lot of the material out there about theband focuses on abstractionsyoull see the wordcathartic used frequently as a descriptor of CrystalCastles style, particularly whenreferencing agship tracks likeAlice Practice and Baptism thatpull o equal levels of violence and
danceability. So to throw one more hat in thering, heres another abstraction, inan attempt to describe their style:
Crystal Castles sounds like a DJtraveled back in time, excavateda 1980s arcade, fed it into theworlds nastiest woodchipper, andreassembled the wreckage, withexcellent results, in a digital audio
editor.Te DJ in that (horrible) metaphoris Ethan Kath, the composing halfof this oronto-based electronic
outt, whose specialty is breeding8-bit hooks with surging bass, aggressive drum loops, and adanceoor sensibility.Te public face of the band, though,
is vocalist Alice Glass, a rough-edged, raven-haired, mesmerizing gure in her early twentieswho pairs (with Kaths instrumentals) a lyricalstyle ranging broadly from sharp and abrasive
to calm and ethereal. And during the groupschaotic and energetic live performances, which have played a signicant part in theirgrowing fame and notoriety, Glass has beenknown to frequently stagedive, climb sets, and(anecdotally) get in the occasional spat withmembers of the audience.Te duo has released two full-length albums, both of which were, confusingly, titled CrystalCastles. With a catalog bolstered additionally
by EP releases and other recordings, Kath and
Glass have, over the past several years, becomefan and critical favorites, collecting positivereviews and top album nods from sources
like NME, the BBC, andPitchfork. And those fortunateenough to be in Oslo onNovember 21st will havethe opportunity to catch
a CC show live, as the
band will be performingat the Rockefeller on thatSunday evening. Teyllbe supported by MaleBonding, an Englishpunk/noise rock groupthat has also establisheda solid following over thepast couple of years.
ickets are currentlyon sale online and atlocal convenience storelocations for a reasonable200 NOK; visit www.rockefeller.no for details.

Dec. 9: Tallest Man on EarthIn the music world, few things are moreelemental, more accessible and rewarding, than
the folk artist, perched on stage with a guitar ora banjo with spare additional accompaniment.Such musicians are storytellers at heart, employing basic musical tools, but the good
ones have a talent for connecting withaudiences that can be dicult to match inother genres.Kristian Matsson, who performs under theallest Man on Earth moniker, happens tobe one of the good ones. Hes been touring
internationally for several years, but Matssonsroots lie in Scandinavia-- hes a native ofDalarna, Sweden. Its dicult to pinpoint hisorigins by listening to his music, however, ashis sound, if anything, echoes the traditions of
the American folk rock scene.Matsson, appropriately, has drawn consistentcomparisons to folk legend Bob Dylan, a linkthat should make plenty of sense if youveheard allest Man on Earth at the microphone. His voice is gravelly and unrestrained, like
Dylans, born seemingly of raw emotion andlate whiskey nights. Matssons vocal deliverylies bare to the elements, and though hedoesnt have the most accessible singing voice
around, the lack of polish lends a rewardingauthenticity to the music.allest Man on Earth has produced two full-length LPs: 2008s Shallow Grave and 2010sTe Wild Hunt, with both receiving criticalacclaim. Te folk stylings on both records,
featuring guitar, piano, and banjo, ow exiblybetween up-tempo pieces and other, morepensive oerings, populated by lyrics full ofimagery and whimsy.
allest Man on Earth will be coming through
Oslo on December 9th, so students sticking aroundbeyond nal exams will have the chance to see anexcellent folk show for the cheap price of 150 NOK.
Te concert will be at Parkteatret, a cozy venue inGrnerlkka. For more on tickets, check http://www.parkteatret.no/.
S :Nov. 22: !!! (chkchkchk)A California group categorized by listeners and criticsas dance-punk. If that sounds like something youdenjoy, then give chkchkchk a shot. 225 NOK, at theRockefeller.
Nov. 28: Deftones(with special guest Ch & Cb)wo excellent rock bands-- Deftones were one ofthe most important alternative acts of the 1990s,releasing seminal albums like Around the Fur andWhite Pony. Coheed & Cambria are progressiverock masters of entertainment, playing energetic, intelligent metal with a knack for life performances.
350 NOK, at Sentrum Scene.
Dec. 3: Gogol Bordello (withDeVotchka)Both of these rock bands take unique approaches
to Eastern European musical avors, each to great
eect. Gogol Bordello play a style of music they, andothers, dene as gypsy punk, and has developed aloyal following after years of persistent internationaltouring. DeVotchka is a multi-instrumental outtthat gained increased popularity after their musicwas heavily featured in the lm Little Miss Sunshine, and after the (wonderful) song How It Endsappeared in an ad spot for the video game Gears of
War II. 320 NOK, also at Sentrum Scene.
Tracking down quality entertainment at reasonale prices can e
a tall task in Oslo, particularly for tose of us wo are coming to
te city from oter countries and witout Norwegian salaries.
Luckily, concerts at different venues around te city tend to e an
exception-- ticket prices are comparale to tose found in oter
countries, so you can take in a sow for aout te same price as a
andful of downtown eers. Of course, you can still gra te drinksat te concert, ut te Montly Moose takes no responsiility for

The Global Reach
of Nobels PeaceText: Mitch Molstad
Pictures: Summer Choi, Miguel Arcngel Fraticelli
Norway, for better or for worse, is a rare topic ininternational headlines. Perhaps, really, it isan enviable position: to live at the top of the
world, relatively unburdened by the constant push-and-pull of global press and politics, with resourcesand beauty abounding.
Tere has been an important exception to that trend, however, that has arisen in previous years, and again
in the last month: the awarding of the Nobel PeacePrize, handled annually by the Norwegian Nobel
Committee.
For over a century, the most important benchmarks inthe elds of chemistry, medicine, physics, literature,
and peace have been acknowledged and rewarded bythe Nobel Prizes. Te awards are the legacy of Swedishinventor and chemist Alfred Nobel, and the storybehind their inception is well-known: in an attemptto counteract the consequences of dynamite, whichhe had invented and proted from, Nobel dedicatedmuch of his wealth upon death to support the abovecauses in the form of the Prizes.
Over the years, the Nobel Peace Prize has evolvedinto the most public face of the lot, which, accordingto Nobels will, goes to whoever shall have done themost or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies andfor the holding and promotion of peace congresses.
Tough Nobel was a Swede, and the Prizes are aSwedish institution, the Peace Prize has, from its
genesis, been at home in Norway. Tough there isno consensus on why Nobel designated Norwayas the executor of the Peace Prize, the Norwegian
Nobel Committee seems to have settled on severalpossibilities. Perhaps, as an ode to the Sweden/Norway political union, Nobel thought it appropriateto allow Swedens little brother a say in the aairs. Also, Nobel may have entrusted the Peace Prizeto Norway due to the nature of its foreign policy,as it lacked the militaristic tradition of Sweden.
Norwegians, speaking generally, likely prefer thelatter explanation.
Te Peace Prize decision has for a long while beena potential focus of contention, and the selection
committee does not have a history of shyingaway from controversial gures: the polarizing Vietnam-era U.S. Secretary of State HenryKissinger shared the prize with high-rankingNorth Vietnam leader Le Duc To in 1973, andthe prize was awarded jointly to Yasser Arafat,Shimon Peres, and Yitzhak Rabin in 1994.
Controversy over the Nobel Peace Prize hasbeen especially high in the last two years, however, as the 2009 and 2010 choices havereceived considerable play in the internationalmedia. Many were shocked to see last yearsaward go to U.S. President Barack Obama, whohad been in oce less than a year. Te decisionwas particularly divisive in America, as many
from both the liberal and conservative sidesof the aisle decried the choice as prematureand unwarranted. Tough he received plentyof support among Americans and from theglobal community, Obama expressed a fair bit
of disbelief upon hearing the announcement, mentioning at one point that he himselfthought he was undeserving.
With the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize, however, the Norwegian Nobel Committee may have
stepped onto an entirely new playing eld. Teprize, which was announced on October 8, wasawarded to Liu Xiaobo for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rightsin China. Liu, who has been serving an 11-year prison sentence since being convicted onsubversion charges
in December 2009,had been a leaderin the push for
democratic reformsto the CommunistChina politicalsystem.
Tough Liu maynot be a gure withas much global
recognition asBarack Obama, his selection couldwell prove to bemore controversial,
Is it appropriate to repurpose
the Nobel Peace Prize as aninternational foreign policy tool?

and will most certainly carve deeperconsequences, than the 2009 choice. As could be expected, and as stateocials had warned of upon theannouncement of Liu as a forerunner, the Chinese state reacted to thedecision with resounding disapproval.
Party leaders threatened diplomaticrepercussions for Norway, and state-owned press agencies within thecountry have since demanded anapology from OsloChinas Globalimes cited a self-conducted surveyindicating that six out of 10 Chinesewant the award stripped and an
apology issued. And, distressingly, human rights groups reported that
Lius wife, Liu Xia, was placed underhouse arrest in Beijing shortly after theannouncement.Ocials within the party argue that the choicewas an attempt at subverting Chinese judicialprocesses.
Of course, fundamentally, its hard to arguethat China is o-base in claiming such; theNorwegian Nobel Committee obviouslyintended to make a pointed political statement
about the repression of dissent and freedomswithin Chinas authoritarian system. In aletter published in the New York imes last
month responding to criticisms, NorwegianNobel Committee chairman Torbjorn Jaglandargued that, in choosing Liu, the group wasdefending a universal standard of humanrights; he wrote, If we keepquiet about China, who willbe the next country to claim
its right to silence and non-interference?
It seems clear that the
Committee has no intention to apologize or withdrawthe award. Te important question, instead, is this: isit appropriate to repurpose the Nobel Peace Prize asan international foreign policy tool? Or, put anotherway, is Norway in the right when it uses the award tomake judgments on events outside its borders?
Tat question likely needs to be approached ona case-to-case basis. But, concerning the 2010Prize, Chairman Jagland makes an important, andconvincing, argument. On the topic of human rights,
the international community has to agree to somelevel of accountability beyond traditional boundariesof sovereignty.
China has made that commitment, as has Norway, and as have dozens upon dozens of other countries.Using the Nobel Peace Prize as an attempt to enforce
that standard betrays an activist
streak within the Committee, yes,and it may have been a highlycontroversial decision, but it was
also highly courageous.
And more importantly, it shined a
spotlight on a man who has longadvocated for broader freedoms ina country where such activism issorely needed.
Te Nobel Peace Prize awardceremony will take place here inOslo on December 10, 2010, at
Oslo City Hall. According to mediareports, Liu Xiaobos brothers haveindicated they are willing to acceptthe award on his behalf if Lius wifeis unable to leave the country.

Unbaabl condiions in SiO
In the last weeks issue ofUniversitas it was proclaimedthat the housing solution withtwo students occupying oneroom, executed by Foundation
of Student Life in Oslo (SiO),is to be maintained in theforeseeable future. Insofar as ithas been administered to thispoint, we see it as a completelyunacceptable situation.
Te pressing problems thatemerged already in the startingphase still remain to be solved ina satisfactory manner by SiO. Sixhundred NOK is not a sucientcompensation for having to putup with an apartment withoutInternet and that is suppliedwith dollhouse furniture andunfurnished common studyrooms. Te information availablefor students was incomplete aswell, but hopefully this problemis only characteristic for thebeginning phase.
When it comes to other aspectsworth criticizing, it looks asif SiO has no intention to doanything about those. SiO gives
a 100% housing guarantee forinternational students. In thelast meeting of Student WelfareCouncil we decided to maintainthis guarantee in its presentwording. We do not wish tobe known for making second-rate citizens of internationalstudents.
For one thing, it looks like everysingle international studenthas to compensate for the sum
of money SiO loses on rentingrooms to international studentsin fall and consequently havingunoccupied rooms during spring.Tis is a structural problem thatneeds a structural solution. At
the moment SiO earns an extra600 NOK per room as a result of
the housing solution. Tis sum, meant to cover all the extracosts due to additional renters,is too big considering the factthat purchasing furniture willpay o in the future (if it hasntalready). Making a prot basedon a desperate situation is notsomething we can accept fromthe students own foundation.
Te biggest problem isthat the housing solution,
concerning only internationalstudents, is profoundly unjust. It discriminates againstinternationals students andcontributes to the segregation ofNorwegian and internationals, diminishing the possibilities ofcultural exchange between thetwo parties.
We cannot have a system thatdiscriminates against thosestudents who do not stand achance in the Oslos real estatemarket. If we wish to have ahousing solution with two peoplein one room, then it has to be anestablished policy for all studentsand not part of a marginalizingand ghetto-building strategywhich has already gone too farwith SiO.
Universitas 27 (13 October)
Frerk . Refe, studentand chairman of the board inSiO, disagrees and says that the
housing solution is not deliberatediscrimination, but a reply tothe pressing demands for morehousing units. He corrects heron the fact that the foreseeablefuture of the housing solutionwill only be clear after a thoroughexamination of the outcomesinvolving feedback from tenants. He points out that SiO hasalready started working withcritique and hopes that withminor adjustments the projectcan continue to exist.

Fame, Beauty, and World Peace: HowMiss Norway Failed To Become MissWorld
Its not always easy to remember, but when it comesto population, Norway is a small country. With around4.7 million inhabitants less than 0.1% o the worldspopulation - the odds o any Norwegian snatching aew minutes o ame on the world stage are statisticallyquite low. So when bookmakers worldwide tippedFrken Norge [Miss Norway] Mariann Birkedal to winthe Miss World pageant, Norwegian media seizedthe story and ran with it. Tus, it came as a surpriseto certain individuals in media and pageant circleswhen Birkedal ailed to crack the top 5 at the nalheld on October 30th in China, instead nishing in arespectable (but disappointing) 6th place.
While Frken Birkedal hasnt had much to say aboutthe outcome o the competition, instead speaking
out about an individual posing as a ashion photographerwho ofered her 7,000 kroner to be allowed to touch himselwhile in her presence, other media personalities have beenless reticent. In particular, Kathrine Srland, anotherNorwegian beauty queen and V personality, has laid theblame or Birkedals loss at the eet o the Norwegian NobelCommittee. In Srlands opinion, Birkedals pageant crownwas a casualty o the tense relations between Norway andChina in the atermath o Chinese dissenter Liu Xiaobo
being announced as the winner o the Nobel Peace Prize lastmonth. Norwegian media reports that similar allegationshave also been raised by other, equally reliable sources suchas ellow competitor Miss Sweden and the British tabloidTe Daily Mail. We left Oslo on Friday night on a 199 kroner
minipris ticket with Norways national rail network,
NSB. The train to Stavanger took 7 hours and
sleeping was difcult. Eight international students
took the trip; two Mexicans, two Canadians,
an American, a Pole, an Aussie, a Kiwi and a
German. We each knew someone, but no one
knew everyone.
As we trudged through rainy Stavanger in the
early morning light we passed a large lake before
arriving at the seaside. The wharf was dotted with
colourful wooden buildings, old wharf sheds that
had been converted into bars and restaurants. But
at 7am on a Saturday the town was quiet.
The round trip from Stavanger to Preikestolen cost
200 kroner and took around 60 minutes each way,
rst by ferry and then by bus. My one attempt to
enjoy the fresh sea air on the ferrys deck was cut
short after my arm lost its battle with the angry
winds in its ght to take one still photo.
The walking track started at the Preikestolen
Vandrehjem, a beautifully located modern hostel
and restaurant that was booked out for our late
September weekend.
The hike to the top was not easy and the two
hour estimated duration was slightly ambitious.
After stopping for photos and scaling rocky
walking-trails-turned-waterfalls we eventually
arrived at the top in around 3 and a half hours. It
felt like I had stumbled accidentally into heaven.
Not that it was all sunshine and rainbows and
choirs of angels, in fact, quite the opposite. The
rain was relentless and the wind was howling. The
clouds were so low (or more pointedly we were
so high) that it was impossible to see anythingbeyond the sharp outline of Pulpit Rock itself
plunging dramatically down at a right angle and
disappearing into the clouds below. I didnt know
whether to be disappointed or awestruck at the
white blanket covering all but this majestic
rock.
I settled somewhere in between and after 15
minutes I was ready to turn back and head for
shelter and a long, hot shower. The weatherhad other ideas. In a eeting moment, without
any warning, the rain stopped and the clouds
began to part. It was as though the treacherous
walk to the top had been nothing but a jostle
for the best seats and now the show was about
to begin.
The clouds parted as though they were
curtains opened by a rope pulled from side
stage. What was revealed was a spectacular,
spectacular Norwegian fjord. The cliffwe were on plunged over 500 metres to
Lysefjord below and the blue water stood out
majestically against the grey sky. Turning to
look behind us we saw the fjord carving its
path through the cliffs like a thick snake in the
rocky landscape.
And due to the, lets say, inclement weather
only us and three hardy German campers
were there to witness the truly incredibleshow.

A Green FrenchFrog with Legs
An interview with the illustrious,
mysterious Jean Claude Simon,
a bartender extraordinaire atFrokostkjelleren - the law pub.
Text:Tapsie Sane-HahaPhotos: www.stephhaas.com
TSH: So, what is the history behind
Frokostkjellern?
JCS: Dammit! I dont know, it used to be agym.
TSH: Were there, like, basketball hoops and
stu like that?
JCS: Uh huh. You didnt know? And you seethe bars there... Tere are pull-up bars on the
back wall.
TSH: Whats the craziest thing youve heard
about a customer doing here? ...or whats the
craziest thing thats happened while you wereworking?
JCS: Oh, while I was working? People comingand dancing on the bar. Tats sweet.
TSH: Yeah, but thats not while were open....
JCS: No, yeah, around the end. Or other peoplesleeping here because they like it so much. And
somebody pooped in the owers but nobody knows
who it was.
TSH: Whats the best night to come, in your opinion?
O all the nights that were open?JCS: Tursdays. Yeah, because theres nobody onTursday - so people should come and then its nice
or me because I have to work and i there are no
people and no work I all asleep. But Friday is better,
but you have to come late, like around midnight.
23:30, midnight. Ten its okay. And I dont think
you always pay on Friday [sometimes there is a cover
charge to get in]. Also one Friday in the month is
Fredagspils.
TSH: ell about the time the guy puked on the danceoor.
JCS: Why?! Because I cleaned it with my barehands?? And then, the paper I used was stuck in the
toilet and I had to reach in the toilet with my bare
hands to pull it out? Tats what you want to know?
TSH: Tat just shows how dedicated you are to your
job.
JCS: Yeah! I couldnt fnd the ucking gloves!
TSH: What about these mysterious sta parties we
keep hearing about?
JCS: What?? Tere are no sta parties... [laughsnervously]
TSH: I Frokostkjelleren were an animal, what kind
o animal would it be?
JCS: A rog. A French rog.
TSH: With or without legs?
JCS: With legs.
TSH: So why is it like a green French rog with legs?JCS: Because its got its ups and downs...
TSH: Oh, sometimes its hoppin and sometimes it
aint? ...okay. What is Frokostkjellerens avorite kind
o movie?
JCS: I have no idea. I dont know, do you know?...Porn?!
TSH: Is Frokostkjelleren good in bed?
JCS: Were talking about a ucking bar!
TSH: Precisely.
JCS: Yeah, it is. I think. O course!
TSH: Who are Frokostkjellerens avorite customers?

JCS: Ones who drink a lot. No. Te sta people. No.I dont know. Favorite customers... Te International
Students! No, thats not true.... But probably the
blonde girls.
TSH: People who tip a lot? What should people wear
when they come to Frokostkjelleren?
JCS: Nothing. It depends who you want to meet. I you just go with
your riends, go as yoursel.
TSH: Who else would you go with?
JCS: Who else than yoursel? Your riends.
TSH: Well, I only ask because it seems like people
tend to dress up here more than at other student
pubs.
JCS: Yeah, thats because theyre law students andthey like to wear costumes. But, come in jeans and
a t-shirt and well accept you with a smile. We wont
serve you, but well accept you.
TSH: What is the best kind o drink we serve here?
JCS: Uh... the best kind o drink I make is a beer. But I think Cosmopolitan!
TSH: mmm... When Per Anders makes it...
What are our opening hours?
JCS: From 19 or 20 to 2. And then i youreriends with the bartender you can stay
sometimes a bit longer, especially i youre a girl
and youre my riend.
TSH: uesday-Friday, right? And Saturday is
usually a closed party.
...and, do we rent it out?
JCS: I dont know. Yeah, or lunch and breakastand stu...
TSH: On Saturdays, too.
... Say something unny!
JCS: bubblubbub
TSH: Describe what it looks like in here, in case
people are here and they dont realize theyre
here.
JCS: [In a deep, creepy voice] You enter a niceplace with intimate lights, nice music comes
to your ear. Te bartender comes to you with a
smile, oers you a beer. You buy it. You take it
with pleasure because its cheap and then you
go and sit down. You look around you and a lot
o beautiul women walk and come and sit next
to you and embrace you with their beauty. Ten
you bring one on the dance oor. You go and youdance. You dance. You dance. And then you get
beer. And then you dance. And then suddenly
youre home, alone.
Tats the story o my lie.
TSH: But we were talking about the bar.
JCS: I got a bit sidetracked.... Its nice. Itsreally cozy. But you have to come early i
you want a chance to taste the coziness o
the place. Because i you come at midnight
it will be crowded and its good i you want
to dance, but its nice to just come and hang
out and have a beer. Come and leave at
2300. Because its cheap.
TSH: It is cheap. 39 kroner or a beer. And
65 or a drink. Its the only student pub that
serves cocktails, I think.
JCS: And theres also champagne. We liketo serve cava. 290kr, yeah, its expensive.
But the wine is cheap! Te wine is 44kr or a
glass.
TSH: Any last words?

1NORWAYS BIGGEST MAMMALHold on, didnt I say Norways biggestinland mainland mammal. In the ocean, the moose is conquered by whale and on theSvalbard islands it loses to the polar bear. Anaverage moose is 1.8-2.1 m (6-7 t) tall andweighs about 380-720 kg (850-1580 pounds).
2MOOSE FARMIn lgens Hus in Sweden moose are
cultivated as arm animals. In summervisitors indulge in moose-back riding and inwinter moose-sleighs are at their service. Tearm also produces moose meat and dairyproducts (milk and cheese), reportedly one o themost expensive in the world.
3MOOSE KILLGenerally a moose would not bother tokill a human since it is not territorial.Exceptions are: mother-moose with children
and moose on the roads. According to statisticsrom Te Norwegian Council o Road Saety(rygg rafkk), every year rom 1500 to 2000moose end up in a road kill, oten taking humanlives as well. Sweden is known or producing lgtest (Moose tested) cars, with enhancedmanoeuvrability allowing the driver to avoidcollision with the moose and the car going in theopposite direction. Common ways o decreasingcollisions include putting up signs (oten stolenby tourists) and ences. Surprisingly enough, one
o the reasons mooselike hanging out onthe road is the layero salt or melting thesnow.
4MOOSE ANDSUNSETSMoose in theSunset or Elg isolnedgang is thesynonym or kitschin Norwegian. Tepaintings o romanticlandscapes witha silhouette o alonely moose on the
oreground appeared in the late sixties and werecopied ever since to ornate every cabin, villa andat. You buy IKEA prints i youre cheap, youget Munch reproductions i youre tacky andyou proudly install moose in the sunset i youretrashy. However, in recent years the moti hassuddenly gained popularity, though it is dicultto say i it is due to nostalgia or sel-irony.
5MOOSE ANTLERS
Moose are recognized by its antlers bonyappendages protracting rom their sculls,
which are shed yearly. Horns o other animalson the contrary are made o keratin and arepermanent. Antlers play an important part inhearing and mating. Given that moose are almostblind, the palm shaped antlers help in catchingslightest air vibrations. When it comes to matingantlers, make males stand out and disfguredantlers mark the castrated ones. Want to getsome second-hand antlers? Look in the nearby
orest rom mid December through January, theshedding time.
6MOOSE SAYINGSNorwegians call moose skogens konge(king o the orest). Other moose-expressions you might want to use is rope pelgen (literally:to cry or the moose) whichmeans to puke, and elge seg inn p noen(literally: to moose onesel in on someone)which means to

MOOSE VS ELKTe name o the animal is one o thecontentions between the British and the
Americans. Te British call it elk, along with manyother nations. Te Americans adopted aNative American word which meanshe strips o reerring to the waymoose eat up the greeneries. Teconusing bit is the act that Americans also use the wordelk to designate a slightlysmaller species in the deeramily with a dierent antlerconfguration.
8MOOSE HUNTEvery autumn rom lateSeptember through October
hundreds o Norwegians pampertheir ancient instincts by going toa moose hunt. A lot o bureaucracyis involved beore you can set outin the woods with a owling piececlinging to your shoulder.Tis, however, does not stopNorwegian hunters romshooting 40,000 mooseevery year. Te devotees omoose hunting hunt alone, scanning the orests orhoo-prints in a detectiveashion. However, it isadvisable to take acomrade with you be it an elkhoundor a group o peopletrying to shoo the
moose towards you(a practice knownas drivjakt). For lessproblematic moosehunt, visit yournearest supermarkets.IKEA has yearlydiscounts on mooselasagne in autumn.
9MOOSE DIET
Want to be asslender as the moose? Sleep 5 hoursa day, take regular strolls and eat twigs, roots, branches and shoots. In act, because a mooslydiet contains so many chewy items, moose do not
have ront teeth in the upper jaw, but have oneat grating tooth instead.
10MOOSE VISITSMoose, being as loveable (Norwegian:elGskelige) as they are, occasionallymake riendly calls on humans. Unortunately orthe latter, due to the considerate size moose are
prone to cause trouble. In January this year oneo the larger emales crashed into a nursinghome in l, wanting to join a resident or
breakast. It was locked in one o therooms where it went berserk rom
the lack o human contact and wassubsequently shot. Another mooseencounter happened this summerin Kongsvinger, when a young calwent or some groceries in KIWI onthe way back to the great outdoors.
It was probably attracted by theorists display o mouth-wateringplants, but then turned to smashing
aisles, thus protesting againstconsumerism. On some of the old
Norwegian re coins you can see thepicture of the king of the forest infront. King Olav V has to contendwith his place on the reverse side.
Moosemotif has become so popularthat it has turned into a collectible. Here the collectionof 700 moose by P.K. Fageren, also the leader of theband Gevirkameratene (Antler Comrades) whosesongs exclusively concern the king of the forest.

L 3 : Bl fkAutumn is here or good. With the change to winter time, came darker, shorter days. In northern Norwayit is already the mrketid[dark time]. A little depressing isnt it? Do not become argels [colorless], andcolor up!Nature is a good place to begin your quest or de norske arger [the Norwegian colors]. Coldand cloudy days are grkalde. o keep your morale up, do not orget that in a ew weeks all the skittenbrun [dirty brown] will become ren hvit [pure white].In these times o darkness, you will not be too surprised to learn that norsk has two words or the colorblack: svart og sort. Norwegians usually spice up their meals with sort pepper [black pepper], but drinksvart kafe [black coee]. It is not a reason or se svart p tilvrelsen [to see lie in black].Your local supermarket cheese counter is also a quite argerik [colorul] area. You will easily distinguishbrunost [brown cheese] rom the others. Tings will get a little trickier when comparing hvitost [whitecheese] andgulost [yellow cheese]. Even i they are presented as distinct types o cheese, both are kindo white-yellowish. Unortunately, a taste test will not help you distinguish which is which.
