Titanic April 15, 1912 A Century Later

Nearly a century has sailed since the luxury steamship Titanic met its catastrophic end in the North Atlantic, plunging two mile to the ocean floor after sideswiping an ice-berg during its maiden voyage. Rather than the intended Port of New York, a deep-sea grave became the pride of the White Star Line’s final destination in the early hours of April 15, 1912. More than 1,500 people lost their lives in the disaster. Her resting place was discovered in 1985 off the coast of Newfoundland. For more information please visit www.history.com

Joe Sanchez

Joe is the fifth of seven children born to Adolfo and Virginia San-chez and raised in Alice, Texas. Joe quit school when he was about fifteen years old and moved to Grapevine, Texas to live with his sister and brother-in-law. There he worked as a welder in a factory. His beginnings in music stemmed from his mother who was a won-derful singer. Joe would listen to his mother’s beautiful voice every single morning as she went about her daily routine of housekeeping. She would sing along with all of the contemporary melodies played by radio person-alities like Miguel Rios and Mando Pena. Other musical influences would include his uncle, Ramon Cardona, who was a singer and guitarist. His cousin, “Yoyo” was also a singer and guitarist. Joe has fond memories of singing to the Beatles tunes as a young child. Joe recalls that around the age of fourteen his old brother had bought a guitar because he was taking music lessons from a college buddy. Joe would listen to his brother practice from a distance. He was not al-lowed in the practice room because his brother did not want Joe distracting their study. After the practice ses-sion was over his brother would leave with his buddy. Joe would take these opportunities to sneak in and pull out his brother’s guitar and practice what he had previously heard from the practice session. One day his brother came home earlier than expected and caught him red-handed. Well, it turns out that his brother was so impressed with Joe’s playing capabilities that he gave Joe his new guitar. Beaming with joy, Joe accepted the guitar and started playing guitar on a regular basis. The person who influenced Joe’s musical direction was his uncle, Domingo Sanchez. Remembering his first audition for Chano Cadena, who at the time was looking for some talent to work for him. Ruben and I got the job and now had to get ready for their first gig with a band. My Uncle Mingo bought me a used bajo sexto and my brother-in-law, Pablo, loaned me a leisure suit. The following weekend they played to a packed house, mano a mano con “El Palomo y El Gorrion”, in the greater Houston area. Joe remembers, laughing, that it was so hard for him to keep on time with the music because all he could hear was the sound of his knees knocking. What an experience! Joe has played with Chano Cadena and Los Superiores de Eddie Ruiz before starting his own band, Los

Nobles de Rancho Alegre. Joe also likes to write songs. Ruben and Joe have played for about 30 years together. The last 20 of those years, Joe’s son, Joey, has accom-panied him. Due to an injury Joe stopped playing in his group and turned his attention to recording and producing and promoting area bands like Los Nuevos Campeones, Conjunto Iluxion , and Conjunto Irresistible on his GVR label and recording studio. With the help of Texas Rehabilitative Services, Joe was able to return to college and first obtain an Associates Degree in General Arts. Joe went on to re-ceive a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics with a Teaching Certificate.

Trivia Answer to Last Month’s Published Speech

The speech in last month’s issue was given by President Ronald Reagan in a radio address in

November of 1977.

St. Gabriel Special Messenger of

God

Do you know your Guardian Angel?

Every one of us have a special Guardian Angel that watch over us. Our Guardian Angel is a gift given to us from God to help us embody and express the highest gifts of our soul throughout our lifetime. They are our constant com-panions that help guide and protect us. One important fact that we must recognize is that our Guardian Angel respects our free will. Our Angels are always around us working to help us but the majority of the time we are to preoccupied with our own worries or concerns, desires, and thoughts that we do not pay attention to them.

Angels are vessels of God’s love and Grace. They bring the lov-ing care of God to us in a form that we can access in our daily lives. Our Guardian Angel is given to us at the time of our birth and re-mains with us until the time of our death. Our Guardian Angel is chosen by the day of our birth. If you were born on a Mon-day, then your Guardian Angel is St. Gabriel, the Archangel, Special Mes-senger of God. *Stayed tuned to our May issue for another Guardian Angel.

Roberto Juarez was born in Laredo, Texas and graduated from Martin High School in Laredo. Roberto joined the US Air Force in June 1964. Roberto served in Vietnam from August 1966 thru August 1967. He was stationed at Tan Son Nhut AFB near Saigon, Vietnam where he served as a radar operator with the Tactical Air Command. After separating from the service, Roberto was hired as a postal clerk with the US Postal Service in Alice, Texas in June of 1969. Roberto married Elena Garza on August 17, 1973. They had a daughter, Ercilia, and a son, Efrain Adolfo. They currently have two granddaughters, Arielle and Gabriella. Roberto was appointed postmaster for the Orange Grove Post Office in July of 1983. He retired in Novem-ber of 2001. Soon after his retire-ment from the Orange Grove Post Office, Roberto decided to go back to school and obtained his BA in Spanish with a teaching certifica-tion from Texas A&I University-

Kingsville. Roberto also worked at the Jim Wells County Tax Office under Lucila Reynolds until her retire-ment. In January of this year Roberto was appointed as Jim Wells County Service Officer. Roberto also serves as a volunteer facilitator with the Peer to Peer Pro-gram sponsored by the Coastal Plains Community Center in Alice. The group meets every 3rd Thurs-day of the month and deals with PTSD issues combat veterans may be experiencing. “There is a real need for this pro-gram,” states Juarez. “Talking with peers, others who have shared their experiences can have tremendous results. If I can help some by shar-ing what I have been through, and am still going through, than I want to do that.” Juarez describes Vietnam as a “war of stress and apprehension-never knowing when something might happen.” Over 40 years later that

same apprehension continues. “For years I dealt with my anxiety, sleeplessness and ap-prehension on my own. I realized I felt guilty be-cause I survived when over 50,000 other didn’t. I still go to counseling every month, and I now have my anxiety under control. I’m hoping I can help these veterans find a way to manage their stress and anxiety.”

“Peer sup-port is so impor-tant,” Juarez added. “To be able to offer it here where our veterans live is vital.” On October 11, 2011 Roberto trav-eled to visit Kingsley Field Air Force Base in Klamath Falls, Ore-gon with squadron mate, Ernest Bierman of Eugene, Oregon. The two had not returned to the area since shipping out for Vietnam in 1966. Both served at Kingsley from 1964 through 1966 doing radar mainte-nance. They predominantly worked at the now defunct radar site on Haymaker Mountain with about twenty other Kingsley Airmen. Upon their return they noted that the base had moved, “it used to be across the road!” said Bierman. “The only thing recognizable was the big hangar.”

Easter is the celebration of Jesus Christ rising from the dead (His Resurrec-tion) after His crucifixion which took place on what we now term Good Friday. According to the scrip-tures, Christ’s tomb was empty three days after His death. His followers saw Him and spoke to Him af-ter this. As the Sabbath (Holiest day of the week) was now approaching, and burials were not permitted, Christ’s body was laid in a new tomb by Joseph of Arimathea. It is thought that this was a tomb that Joseph had prepared for his own death, but having pleaded with Pilate for the release of Christ’s body, he ur-gently needed a suitable place for the body to be kept until burial af-ter the Sabbath. Assisted by a

Roman called Nicodemus, Joseph bought fine linen in which he wrapped Christ’s body as it was brought down from the cross. At the entrance of the tomb was placed a large boulder.

Nearly three days later, on the Sunday, Mary Mag-delene and Mary, Mother of Jesus’s disciple, James, en-tered the tomb to anoint Christ’s body and prepare it for burial. However, upon entering, they were shocked to find the tomb empty. Christ’s body had gone. The two Mary’s saw an Angel who announced that Christ had resurrected, and as-sumed life after death. Natu-rally, they were very scared, but strangely comforted, es-pecially when they spoke with several of Christ’s dis-ciples, who said Christ had appeared to them, and as-sured them that He had

risen. From that time on, followers of Christ were assured the hope of life after death, an everlasting life in the Kingdom of Heaven. The real meaning of Easter had be-gun.

Jesus “Jesse” Perez

La Voz de San Diego

San Diego- Jesse Perez was born a natural musician. By the age of eight, Jesse was already playing the harmonica. It was around this time that Jesse also started singing. His love for signing helped him land a job with Los 7 Nacionales de Julian Garcia. In 1963, when Jesse was only 14 years old he sang his first song “Que Suerte la Mia” at a club named El Torito in Corpus Christi. Jesse continued to sing during his childhood and adolescent years. This would open the door to Jesse writing his own songs. In 1974, Jesse would come to meet Hum-

berto Lozano Lopez and establish a lengthy friendship. Mr. Lopez gave Jesse the nickname of “El Solitario” because Jesse always sang solo. In 1975, Jesse would compose his first song entitled “La Tragedia de George B. Parr.” Jesse has composed over 200 songs. Jesse was also privileged to be a spokesperson for Anheuser-Busch Natural Light Beer and Budweiser Beer. Jesse has been blessed with the talent of playing different musical instruments such as, the accordion, base guitar, bajo sexto, drums, key boards, and harmonica.

April is Child Awareness Month

Six Protective Factors Protective factors are conditions in families and communities that when present, increase the health and well-being of children and families. Keeping Children Safe In, On, and Around Water

Spring has arrived and with this comes the blissful hot days. Families are preparing the home pools for enjoyment or seeking relief at public pools. Along with this comes the worries of water safety. Parents need to be mindful of the children and take the proper precautions for a fun and safe time. Below are some tips for children to practice while in, on, and around water. Parents are encouraged to super-vise all water activities. • Maintain constant supervision. Watch children

around any water environment, no matter what skills your child has acquired and no matter how shallow the water. For younger children, practice “Reach Supervision” by staying within an arm’s length reach.

• Don’t rely on substitutes. The use of flotation de-

vices and inflatable toys cannot replace parental

supervision. Such devices could suddenly shift po-sition, lose air, or slip out from underneath, leaving the child in a dangerous situation.

• Enroll children in a water safety course or Learn-to

-swim classes. Your decision to provide your child with an early aquatic experience is a gift that will have infinite rewards. These courses encourage safe practices.

• Parents should take a CPR Course. Knowing these

skills can be important around the water and you will expand your capabilities in providing care for you child.

HOROSCOPE 2012

April 2012 Your Personal Horoscope Guide to Health, Wealth & Love

Aries (March 21-April 20): A shift of focus has occurred. You're seeking the meaning of life, becoming somewhat of a philosopher. You want to understand the world better from inner levels. All your life you've been focused on the outer. You seek knowledge of things greater than self-foreign cul-tures, new music, different beliefs, the big picture. Keep in-quiring. Go to London. Taurus (April 21-May 21): You think about what you share with others, especially resources. It's time for you to evalu-ate important legal matters. That's why they're on your mind. What sorts of things? Like inheritances, grants, loans, family money. You must re-evaluate how you feel about death, too. Both issues are difficult. You're strength maintains your courage. Gemini (May 23-June 20): Although the Libran pause is over for Aries, it's taking a second turn with you. Somehow you feel disconnected from everything. From things higher and lower, from Soul and personality, from the earth and from people. Don't fret. This is a natural occurrence this time of year for you. Hold everything in balance and in check. Everything's equal. Awareness is coming. Distribution (of grace) is happening. Cancer (June 21-July 20): Maintain constant surveillance with important files and information. The mercury retro could create chaos and disorder. Don't try to learn anything new during the retro, especially at work. You won't understand anything and will actually not retain information. The best endeavor now is physical exercise. I hear that groan. Take small walks. Leo (July 21-Aug. 22): Things will expand creatively and artistically. Something in that area needs updating anyway. It's likely that, whether you like it or not, you'll be invited to parties, to celebrate festive occasions, to be with others who enjoy you. During this month you'll think about your child-hood. And come to greater understanding and forgiveness. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Home is where you feel most safe. A winter garden brings forth your ability to nurture and you become the reflection of Ceres who holds a sheaf of wheat in her arms. You may do work on your family origins. Revive and recreate traditions that connect you with your family. They will warm you well into the future.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Communication with family mem-bers, even neighbors, will be short, quick and easy. You'll enjoy bits of information from here, there, everywhere and then go on your way. Anything around learning is also that way. You learn fast, take in lots of information, then find more. Be aware that communication and computers fall by the wayside during Mercury retro. It's not personal. Every-thing's tired. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): It's good to plan your holiday parties. Good to have people over. Good to organize group activities and pause a bit with friends. Love and affection flow for you feel completely secure within yourself. Your inti-mate relationships take on a friendly air. This is needed be-cause friendship brings about love and dissolves discord. Do this intentionally. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 20): New beginnings are almost upon the horizon. I said "almost" due to the Mercury retro. Feeling them, you arrange your appearance to make good impressions. This rearranges your self-awareness and per-sonality, too. You may have a sort of crisis of identity. Don't worry. When we become someone new, the old goes into shock. Take Rescue Remedy. Capricorn (Dec. 21-Jan. 20): So much is happening where no one can see it. This is good at this time because you can do much more than expected, see inner realities no one else can, and recognize what's needed to make important per-sonal changes. Your Soul takes care of all issues that arise, especially distant and sad memories from the past. This will pass. Aquarius (Jan. 21-Feb. 18): Friends are most important now along with being involved in groups. Something intelligent comes forth and your feelings and interests are seen. Ideas, usually unusual from you, do challenge others. At this time they are accepted easily. Follow your own mind and don't conform to anyone. Pisces (Feb. 18-March 20): Work continues to be rather overwhelming. But if you ask your angels for help by making them lists of work needing to be done, they'll get to it quickly and efficiently. Praise comes your way. And Life sweeps into your living room. Re-examine your professional goals. Your
