Up Close w/the Editor

The leaves are falling, the air is turning cooler and, and the wardrobe includes

sweaters and jeans instead of shorts and tanktops. My calendar is already full of spooky places to go and Halloween activities to do. There is nothing more fun than having a clown monster scare the scream out you or winding around a corn maze that offers only one way out. Halloween is one of my favorite times of year and I love watching all the trick-or-treat-ers show off their costumes. Last year, I counted 129 “Frozen” cos-tumes, winning the most popular in my small town. What will it be

1. Mint Oreo TrufflesBy Linda Cortez

Start with 1 package of Cool Mint Creme Oreos. You may use regular or Double Stuf Cool Mint Creme Oreos. Pulse the Oreos into crumbs. The entire Oreo – the cookie and the cream center. Beat the crumbs with 8 ounces of softened cream cheese in a large bowl. I’ve used light cream cheese before without any problem.

Next, roll into balls. I usually do about 1.5 Tablespoons of Oreo/cream cheese mixture per truffle. The mixture is very wet, but you’ll still be able to roll into balls. Place the balls on a plate and freeze.

Melt pure chocolate in a deep bowl. Drop the truffle in the mid-dle of the melted chocolate. Swirl the chocolate all around it with a fork. Pick up the truffle with a fork

Tap the fork on the edge of the bowl to allow the excess chocolate to drip off. Place on a baking sheet for chocolate to set. For the green drizzle, pour melted Candy Melts into an emptied squeeze bottle.

This edible tree decora-tion for the holidays was submitted by Stephanie Rackers, Missouri subscrib-er. She found this cute little Chocolate Covered Straw-berry Christmas Tree pro-ject online and shared on Facebook.

Chocolate Covered Strawberry Christmas Trees - a fun and easy Christmas project to do with your kid-dos!

But really this was super fun to do with the kids and really didn’t get too out of control. I helped them each make a few trees one at a time, and I let them pick which color sprinkles and star they wanted to deco-rate with.

The little stars on top are from a local specialty candy store, and they really complete the look of the tree. I think you could find something similar in the baking supply section of a hobby store as well. If you are not able to find them nearby, you can order them on Amazon. I only used the white ones for my trees, but the boys

liked the colorful ones.

Toothpicks are a helpful tool when you are dipping and han-dling the strawberries before the candy coating has set. You’ll notice that I used a white icing on top of the Oreo to adhere the tree to it’s base. You can simplify this step by just opening the Oreo and setting the tree on the frosting already in-

side. I had trouble separat-ing the Oreos in a way that left all the frosting intact. Guess I didn’t have enough practice as a kid?

I would also recommend not planning on keep-ing these cute little guys around before eating them for more than a day. Be-cause of the moisture in the strawberry, things can get a little soggy.

Directions:Set a heat proof bowl over a

small pot of simmering water on the stovetop (double boiler). Slow-ly melt the candy melts in the bowl, stirring occasionally. Do not allow moisture to come in contact with the candy. Spoon or pipe a small amount of icing onto the top of each Oreo. This will adhere the strawberry to the cookie base.

Once candy melts are fully melt-ed, turn the heat to low while you dip the strawberries using a tooth-pick inserted into the cut end. Shake off excess candy coating gently. Using a second toothpick inserted into the pointed end of the dipped strawberry, carefully place the strawberry on top of the icing on the Oreo.

Decorate with sprinkles and a candy star while the candy coating is still wet. It will usually dry in about 10 minutes.

Across the state, in Kansas City, the holiday season begins with the traditional Plaza Lights Lighting Ceremony. Held the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 26, 2015) in the popular Country Club Plaza entertainment district, the Plaza lighting (celebrating its 86th edition) includes activities and concerts both before and after the traditional flip of the switch. The Plaza lights illuminate 15 city blocks and are on daily, from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., through Jan. 17, 2016. Shops in the district offer ex-tended hours during the holidays.

Fun for all ages abounds in the Lake of the Ozarks area dur-ing the holiday season. Visit the Enchanted Village of Lights (Nov. 20, 2015 through Jan. 2, 2016) and the annual Lighted Christmas Parade (Nov. 28, 2015) in Lau-rie. Don’t miss the Osage Beach Holiday Lights (Nov. 28, 2015

through Jan. 3, 2016) or Christmas on the Square in Camdenton (Dec. 5, 2015). And enjoy Old Tyme Christmas (Dec. 12, 2015) in Linn Creek and the Lake Ozark Christ-mas Parade (Dec. 12, 2015) during your holiday travels to the Lake.

The first weekend in Decem-ber is a great time for festival fun in Ste. Genevieve, which hosts its 31st Annual Holiday Christ-mas Festival from Dec. 5-6, 2015. During the weekend, you’ll enjoy a parade, carolers and carriage rides; have the chance to snap photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus; listen to any number of 30 free musical programs in the historic district; and shop in stores and art galleries. While you’re in town, don’t miss the chance to visit Ste. Genevieve’s popular wineries. After sampling for yourself, pick a bottle (or two) as gifts - you’re sharing a true taste of Missouri!

Also in Ste. Genevieve, the Felix Valle House State Historic Site hosts Le Reveillon, a showcase of traditional French Christmas cus-toms, decorations, music and food on Dec. 13, 2015. And the Buldoc House Museum has a winter won-derland of lights in the Vieux Noel on Fridays and Saturdays through Jan. 6, 2016.

Remember, not every holiday gift has to come from a store. In fact, the best gifts are shared memories and creating family traditions that endure. Enjoy the holidays in Missouri.

COLUMBIA - What started in 1995 as one Columbia resident’s per-sonal project, involving many strings of lights and a small crab apple tree in his front yard, has morphed into one of Columbia’s most gorgeous and popular holiday attractions. Now, locals and visitors alike make a tradi-tion of bundling up, piling family and friends into the car and heading out to visit the Magic Tree at the Village of Cherry Hill, located on the south-west part of town at 4200 Merchant Street.

Each year, Randy Fletcher, or “Will Treelighter” as he’s better known, spends hours upon hours wrapping tens of thousands of lights around every branch of the Magic Tree. While the original Magic Tree was lo-cated in Will’s front yard, the growing popularity of his work and resulting increase in traffic in the residential neighborhood necessitated finding a new tree in a new area.

The Magic Tree display moved to the Village of Cherry Hill in 2010,

making it easier for more people to enjoy Will’s art. The popularity of the Magic Tree continues to grow expo-nentially each year and now, there are six different Treelighter projects located throughout the city. Visitors to Columbia during the holiday sea-son can take a driving tour to bask in the glow of each extravagantly lighted trees.

The “magical loop,” as we’ll call it, covers just under 16 miles and me-anders through some historic neigh-borhoods with views of other elegant

lighting displays and can be complet-ed in less than an hour. “Magical” tourists should feel free to linger to take in the lighted trees in all their splendor. We suggest starting in the downtown district at the tree located on the corner of Broadway and Ninth streets, that way visitors can pop in and out of shops and grab a bite to eat before embarking on their tour. The trees are alight from 5-11 p.m. every night, now until January 6, 2016. For detailed turn-by-turn driving direc-tions, visit TinyURL.com/MagicTree-Tour.
