father peter’s message“Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pitifully Poor Performance.” From the moment that I first heard this saying I have always found it thought provoking. It seems especially relevant as we bring a close to our ‘summer activities’ and begin to ‘gear-up’ for the new school year. Stores have been full of signs alerting us to the fact that we can find everything we need to assure a ‘perfect performance’ for sale in their store. Schools have also sounded a call to arms, by e-mailing parents a reminder of their child’s summer reading assignments and a list of items that students ‘must have’ with them in class in order to assure impeccable discipline and achievement. Parents are told that these mandatory items will provide their children with the basic tools necessary to learn; equipping them with ‘vital’ instruments imperative for advancement.

This period of renewal is not something unique to those in academia. The Orthodox Church provides us with periods of preparation throughout the year; with opportunities to begin anew. Often times these ‘renewals’ come in the form of a fast, during which we seek to shed ourselves from destructive behaviors and patterns. Other times they come in the form of a new year, a new month, week or even day. These crusades provide a sense of retreat from the mundane and provide the time and place for us to refocus our life on Christ and His teachings. We embark on this type of journey by thoughtfully watching what physical sustenance we provide ourselves, while being prayerfully attentive to our spiritual nourishment. The goal is to bring us closer to Christ, to find the strength, through the Grace of the Holy Spirit, to be Christ-like in our thoughts and actions, ultimately bringing us closer to the Lord and giving all Glory to God.

The Church sends out its own signal of awareness and through Christ’s teaching reminds us that we are in called to live according to His Example. For this to take place we are called to be Good Stewards with our time, our talent and our treasure. To show ourselves “to be a pattern of good works; showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility.” (Titus 2:7) As Orthodox Christians we are called to be “good not merely out of obedience to law or harmony with nature, or in order to gain immortal bliss for the soul. Rather, we are called to be righteous in anticipation of the age to come, the eschaton, the age of the fullness of creation in the incarnate Son of God.” (Orthodox Study Bible, p. 1648)

The Church provides us with the examples of the Prophets, the Saints, the Theotokos and Christ Himself; nourishes us through the Sacraments and the Grace of the Holy Spirit; calls us to be constantly attentive to our spiritual journey; and reminds us that “Prayerful Peaceful Pious Petitions Plant Potent Principles of Faith.” + Father Peter

Parenting as Stewardship: The Role of Parents in Moral and Faith Formation

parenting as stewardship: the role of parents in moral and faith formationby Panayiotis SakellariouOriginally found in PRAXIS Magazine

During the parish council meeting, the man shot back at the youth director, “It’s people like you who make it so difficult for us parents!” You are responsible for teaching our kids about the faith. Isn’t that why we pay you anyway? The youth director had simply suggested that the parish try to find ways to support and equip parents to practice the Orthodox Faith in the home with their children. This dad would have none of it.

A scene like this isn’t too difficult to imagine. But decades of research have proven that families – especially parents – are the primary moral and spiritual teachers of young people. In 1990, the Search Institute conducted a national study asking seventh to twelfth graders to identify the key faith-shaping influences in their lives. The results showed that both mothers and fathers topped the list for talking about faith with their children. “Effective Christian Education: A National Study of Protestant Congregations,” Search Institute, 1990.

Going back to the frustrated father, though, many parents are too busy, too tired or too intimidated to seriously live out their faith at home with their children. Many of us still believe that faith formation is the sole responsibility of the priest or Sunday school teachers. If parents are the primary influence on faith development, however, we need to take the responsibility seriously and equip ourselves for it.

The “Orthodox Family in America in Home and at Church” study, conducted in 2010 by the Center for Family Care of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, investigated the needs that parents and priests identified as necessary to equip families to take lead in the moral and faith development of children. Results suggested the following topics: religious education for families; adult classes on parenting; raising children with strong morals; praying as a family at home and at church. As we deepen our own faith and love of Christ – through involvement in the Church and at home with programs like these – we can better understand this to be our primary role in the home.

Rev. Fr. George Morelli succinctly summarizes the role of parents in a family’s faith formation: “The family as the domestic church cannot foreclose on its obligation to be Christ-centered. Parents cannot assign their obligation to others, be it the parish priest, teachers or youth workers. Christ must be present in the home from marriage, conception, birth, growth, until all fall sleep unto the Lord in the hope of eternal salvation.” “Orthodox Marriage and Parenting in the Domestic Church: Ladder of Divine Ascent for Marriage,” OrthodoxyToday.org

marriage as the foundation of familyThe crowns received by the bride and groom on their wedding day signify that the couple is called to be the king and queen of their new home, and that together with their children, they are to become a prophetic witness to God. The cornerstone of this little kingdom is the marital bond between husband and wife.

How, then, does the strength of the marital relationship affect parenting and teaching our children? The “Building Strong Families” study in 2002, correlating strong families and parenting, came up with the following instructive findings:

A key – but often lacking – resource for parents is a strong relationship with their spouse or partner. The parents we interviewed who experience an excellent partner relationship . . .are more likely to feel successful and up to the challenges of parenting. “Building Strong

Marriage is more than human. It is a “microbasileia,” a miniature kingdom, which is the little house of the Lord. - Saint Clement of Alexandria

Families,” a collaborative study by the YMCA and Search Institute, 2002.

A strong and successful marriage, therefore, is the foundation of healthy parenting. What does such a marriage look like? How does it build a strong basis for the raising of children? Let’s take a look at some of its key traits:

the holiness that will visit them, will shower grace on their children. . . Love, harmony and understanding between parents are what are required for the children. This provides a great sense of security and certainty.” Wounded by Love

1. Sanctifying. Allow Christ to enter into the marital bond and sanctify it with His presence. He will then transform and purify the couple’s love for on another, and together they will create an atmosphere of holiness in the family. This teaches our children the importance of piety and worship in the home.

2. Sacrificial. “Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21). There must be mutuality in love between the husband and the wife as shown by self-sacrifice and obedience to one another and, together, by obedience to Christ. This will model sacrificial love and obedience to our children.

3. Caring. We all have a primary “love language.” Learning what this is for our spouse, be it physical touch, words of affirmation or something else, is critical in showing that we care. Learning to share our time, our attention and our affection are also important ways to express that we are thinking about our spouse. By doing thee, we teach our children to be caring and compassionate.

4. Forgiving. Learning how to forgive each other is one of the most important and difficult lessons in marriage. As a result, when our children hear us say, “I’m sorry,” after an argument, they feel safe and learn that their parents love each other in spite of their differences.

parenting as stewardshipFor parents, the upbringing of children is the most important and sacred stewardship in life. It begins with conception, in the womb, wherein the mother is called to lead a full sacramental life during the months of pregnancy and the expecting parents are to maintain a life of prayer and sanctity in the home. Sister Magdalen instructs, “If we pray . . .we create an atmosphere in which children taste prayer and God’s presence. If we dwell in this spirit, even without words, even before children can speak, they can acquire a natural taste for prayer, and the desire to know God” Children in the Church Today, St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press, 1997.

My wife and I have always strived to be good stewards. Yet it never seems to be a linear process. For instance, even though we have carved out time for family evening prayers at our altar, we often end up doing them in the bedroom after our daughters are all tucked in bed. This is either due to our own lack of discipline or because getting them to stay still is more effort than we want to exert! But when we do get all settled and prayerful, it can be very rewarding. Our older daughter loves to read

With us everything should be secondary compared to our concern with children, and their upbringing in the instruction and teaching of the Lord. - Saint John Chrysostom

Elder Porphyrios has very powerful words that exhort the married couple to become holy for the sake of their salvation and that of their children:

“What saves and makes for good children is the life of the parents in the home. The parents need to devote themselves to the love of God. They need to become saints in the relation to [each other and to] their children. . . And the joy that will come to them,

prayers from our little prayer book, and our younger one recites Psalm 23 (“The Lord is my shepherd...”) over and over again.

Striving to become good stewards of our children requires work, commitment and patience. Children are inclined to imitate both the good and the bad, so parents must become good models of Christ-like behavior. We need to guide them in internalizing godly values and virtues, and in developing skills that will help them become mature, caring adults. We must equip them for living moral lives in an increasingly immoral and impious society. This isn’t easy, but if our efforts begin in our marriage and in our home, God will bless our families so that we become a little church of the home.

St. John Chrysostom eloquently captures this awesome stewardship of raising godly children in our church of the home:

Let us raise our children in such a way that they can face any trouble, and not be surprised when difficulties come. Let us bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. When we teach our children to be good, to be gentle, to be forgiving, to be generous, to love their fellow men, to regard this present age as nothing, we instill virtue in their souls, and reveal the image of God within them. This, then, is our first task: to educate both ourselves and our children in godliness, otherwise what answer will we have before Christ’s judgment seat? Homily 21 on Ephesians.

Parish Council News

parish council news

Dear Fellow-Parishioners and Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On behalf of your Parish Council, I would like to be able to update you on a variety of items in the life of our vibrant parish community. Hopefully by now, all parishioners should be aware that the three parish council priorities for this year are strategic planning, communication, and building a solid volunteer foundation for our committees and ministries.

In September, Fr. Peter and I will be gathering all previous Parish Council Presidents together for a special meeting. The purpose of that meeting is to begin formulating the long-term master plan for our community in alignment with the solid path and vision Fr. Peter has set before us. We will be presenting the results of that meeting to the parish community for feedback and input so that we can all take part in envisioning the future of our St. Barbara family together. This process is part of the strategic planning process that we began this year with the newly-formed Strategic Planning steering committee. Our new Chapel of the Holy Trinity is a wonderful example of such proper planning. This new Chapel has been designed to service our community for smaller services. Weekday services, Baptisms, and other festal events will be able to take place in this new chapel, which will be an integral part of our parish’s prayer and liturgical life. In fact, we hope to have the chapel open each day for the faithful to come and have a quiet place of prayer to God.

On Sunday, October 14th His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America will be visiting our parish so that we can formally celebrate the opening of our new Chapel. I hope that all of you will be able to join us this day in welcoming our Spiritual Father and also rejoicing in this special day. I want to thank the entire parish community of the Holy Trinity, and the Jerry Vartelas family for

underwriting the costs to make this new Chapel a reality. I also want to thank Greg Stamos, Chairman of the Chapel Committee and all the committee members for all their efforts in bringing this project to completion.

In terms of communication, the improvements within the community have been proceeding steadily and noticeably. We have already had four parish-wide informational meetings and two Parish Assemblies. We have vastly improved our communication while drastically cutting the presentation time to only 10-30 minutes in most instances.

By the end of the year, we will have had ten public forums and three parish-wide reports on parish finances. This is unprecedented in our parish. With our current plan, we will have exceeded our stated goals for communication touch points and ongoing transparency to you, our fellow-parishioners.

We have also begun making small but important changes to other communication details. For example, hours of operation are now clearly posted outside the parish office to alleviate confusion; our parish calendar is online (and available for smartphones) and updated regularly; we have increased the consistency and frequency of information disseminated via email; and we have created a new digital publication and bulletin insert called “Happenings” to detail the life of our community in an ongoing basis. Soon, we will be adding a “frequently asked questions” section to our parish web site so that you will be able to get quick answers to common questions at any time of day without needing to contact the Church office.

Moreover, within the next two months, you will also see newly formatted statements for both the annual stewardship and five-year building fund drive. These new statements will have a new, clear format that shows your total commitment, current due balance, and monies previously paid. At the end of January, you will also now receive a new consolidated statement that will show all of your stewardship and building fund drive payments from the previous year. You will be able to use this new consolidated statement for tax purposes and year-end reconciliation.

All parishioners should know that the Parish Council,

Parish Council News

working with the Finance Committee, has reduced parish expenses. Yet, even though we are continuously working to reduce expenses, we realize the sobering reality that significant maintenance has been deferred for many years and we have no choice but to commence with significant expenses or risk irreparable damage and even greater financial risk to our parish properties.

Of paramount concern are the leaks in our parish dome. These leaks threaten our beautiful space of worship and priceless iconography. By the time you receive this mailing, we should have the results of the extensive water leak analysis authorized by the Parish Council. HB Fishman, a well-known and highly-respected consulting firm spent a day analyzing our roofing and leak locations and through a meticulous process they were able to successfully replicate leaks at all known locations. At a forthcoming informational session, we will be reporting the results of the report to the entire parish. I want to thank Bill Chaltas and all the members of the Property Maintenance Committee for their work in moving this process forward.

You should also know that as part of our commitment to reduce overall costs, our parish will soon be converting to natural gas. Following the Odyssey Festival, the gas company will be installing the necessary piping to bring gas onto our St. Barbara parish campus. I want to thank George Scarveles, who has been setting the long-term ground work for this project over the past several years and soon we will be able to reap the fruit of these labors.

Another major change coming to our St. Barbara community is recycling. Many of us may not be aware that our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is recognized as a leader in environmental conservation and thinking and has been honored across the globe for his pioneering work with the environment. In fact, he is affectionately called “The Green Patriarch” due to his efforts.

We, as a parish under the Archdiocese and the Ecumenical Patriarchate, are proud to become leaders in this effort ourselves. It’s an integral part of our faith, our identity, and legacy as Orthodox Christians. Soon, you will be seeing recycling bins around the Church campus. Please use them. I want to thank Paula Kavathas and Patric Marchitto who spearheaded this effort over the past

several months. As stewards of our parish and the environment, we hope to implement other efforts over the next several months to further green our parish.

Speaking of being stewards, this year we will be sending out our Stewardship mailing in October and all parishioners will be expected to return pledge cards by the end of December. While this may seem very early to most parishioners, this is the recommended model from the Archdiocese and what successful parishes with Stewardship do. Unfortunately our current stewardship process is flawed and we’ve seen the negative consequences. Our current format is causing us to have sporadic cash-flow throughout the year with cash-flow shortages at the beginning of each year and during the summer months. As part of our fiduciary responsibility, we will be addressing this chronic problem head-on.

Thus, as you will see in the forthcoming stewardship mailing, we need to re-educate our entire community on what financial stewardship truly is. Financial stewardship is an expression of our thankfulness for the blessings that we have been given. Financial stewardship is how all of us together enable the ministries of our parish to pass on the light of Christ and witness that light beyond our community.

Unfortunately, our average Stewardship pledges are currently about half as much of what other church communities in the United States average. That is not a misprint. Our average stewardship commitment at St. Barbara is well below the average of other communities to the point where Churches half our size sometimes have double our budget.

Why do we have this challenge within our parish? There’s clearly no problem with knowing our budget (it is authorized by the parish community), where our stewardship commitment goes (every parishioner receives an account), and our financial transparency (we report our financials each year). All these items are clearly communicated regularly. Rather, the issue stems from a proper understanding of how we, as Orthodox Christians, should be stewards of our parish community. Therefore, we will be making an increased educational push for Stewardship over the next year. We hope for a positive response from all in our parish community and

look with promise to an increased spiritual understanding from all parishioners on the principes of being a steward in Christian giving.

There are many, many other exciting things happening in our parish community. There is not enough space to list them and thank all who have been involved. Yet one thing is sure: we have much work yet to do. Because, as Christ said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few” (John 10:2) we will be reaching out to you—to all our parishioners more and more to be increasingly active within our community. All of us are all called to live our Greek Orthodox Christian faith and not simply be passive consumers.

Finally, I hope you will join me in thanking Fr. Peter, Lea Loussides, and the other members of the Parish Council who have worked so diligently over the past eight months in their service to St. Barbara.

Fr. Peter’s pastoral care and love is synonymous with the very fabric of our community and it is thanks to his leadership and support that our parish remains vibrant and firmly rooted in the richness of our Orthodox faith. Lea works tirelessly behind the scenes each day ensuring that all of the administrative aspects of our parish run smoothly and never seeks any recognition for her efforts. Finally, I commend my fellow Parish Council members for their ongoing commitment of time and talent. It is their daily sacrifice for our parish that is behind many of the improvements that you are seeing in the life of our community. In Christ’s service,Theo NicolakisPresident, St. Barbara Parish Council

father Joel mceachen elected president of greek orthodox retired clergy association

The Rev. Joel McEachen has been elected president of the 172 member Retired Clergy Association of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. The election took place

at the biennial general meeting of the RCA held in conjunction with the 2012 Clergy–Laity Congress in Phoenix, AZ, in July, and Fr. Joel will take office effective September 1st. Father Joel joined the RCA board in 2008, and most recently has served as its treasurer and co-editor of the monthly newsletter, The EPISTLE.

He attended St. Vladimir’s Seminary from 1965–1968, having been received into the Orthodox Christian faith at St. Anthony’s Church, Bergenfield, NJ. During his seminary days, he was appointed youth director at St. Demetrios Church, Astoria, NY, and subsequently held the same position at St. Nicholas Church, Flushing, NY. After marriage to Sandra Reshetar, and graduation from St. Vladimir’s with an M.Div. in 1968, he left for a year of study at the University of Thessalonica. Upon his return, he was ordained deacon by Bishop Timothy of Rodostolon at St. Andrew’s Church, Chicago, IL, and priest by Archbishop Iakovos at St. Nicholas Church, Flushing, NY, September 27, 1970, where he served as assistant pastor until October 1973. He then was appointed pastor of Holy Trinity Church, Ansonia, CT, until his retirement in 2009 when he began serving the community of Saint Barbara.

His colorful and active life has included service in the U.S. Naval Reserve, work as an IBM systems programmer, and extensive involvement in The Boy Scouts of America, which he dovetailed with youth work in parishes, and programs for the GOA and the Standing Conference of Orthodox Bishops (SCOBA), during his priestly ministry. Fr. Joel revised the Alpha-Omega Scouting award program in 1975 at the request of SCOBA. He also wrote the guidelines for the CHI-RHO program and developed the Prophet Elias adult leader recognition program.

Members of the Parish Council, on behalf of the entire parish, present Fr. Peter with framed pictures of the Holy Pascha Morning service in commemoration of Father’s Day, with a special inscription honoring the Light of the Resurrection and pastoral leadership.

Appalachia Service Project - Mission Trip to Alaska

appalachia service projectBy Tess Grimaldi

In early July, I participated in a mission trip called the Appalachia Service Project in Tennessee with other Orthodox Christians from several local communities including the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church of Danbury, Saint John’s Orthodox Church of Bridgeport and Saint Alexis Orthodox Church of Clinton. In preparation for our trip, we offered talks concerning the mission of our journey, including one at Saint Barbara Church during an AHEPA sponsored breakfast.

We traveled down South in vans, taking about two days to reach our destination. Starting on a Monday, we went in groups to our assigned family’s house to both repair and build. In my personal group, we were fixing the front of a couple’s house, adding insulation and replacing rotted wood with fresh wood. Others in our group had tasks such as replacing floors, building a front porch and steps, and putting down tile. We accomplished much during our five days of work. The trip wasn’t just about work however. For one thing we all got very close to the families we were serving. In fact, we even hosted all the families at our living center for a picnic in the middle of the week! Getting to know the families who live happily with so much less than us is such an eye-opening experience, and one that I will not forget. The couple I worked for was so kind, and it was a pleasure to see them even while I was working! Not only did we make friends with the families, but with each other as well. Everyone in the group got along well, and we had loads of fun on and off of the worksite.

Finally, on the ride home we stopped at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania, which was super fun! All in all, the trip was a great experience. Everyone learned so much, and had tons of fun doing so! Without all the generous donations from the extended Saint Barbara family and all others, our trip would not have been possible. Thank you!

mission trip to alaskaBy Steven Sarigianis

This brief article I offer to the community is a small reflection of my most recent missionary endeavors and of mission work in general:

In the past six months I have been blessed with the opportunities to participate in two short term mission trips through Holy Cross and the Orthodox Christian Mission Center. Over spring break I travelled to St. Herman’s seminary on Kodiak Island, Alaska with Father Luke Veronis (a seminary instructor and former OCMC missionary) and two others as part of a “bridge building” team to strengthen our relations with them. Later in June, I enrolled in a summer missions class (also with Father Luke) on the Missiology of Archbishop Anastasios and the resurrection of the Church in Albania. Missions work by nature is exciting; it necessitates leaving one’s comfort zone (at least to a minimal degree). It requires patience, commitment, and a deep sense of empathy to understand the people you help, serve and bring closer to Christ. Mission work is absolutely necessary in the life of our Church. If there is anything I have learned in my brief experiences abroad, this is it: that to serve others is far better than to be served yourself. Missions is a ministry that is picking up speed in the Orthodox Church after centuries of being relatively inactive. It is a branch of ministry that I am personally exploring; taking these two trips has helped me discern my call to missions. And of course, like any missionary or “missionary in training” if you will, it is necessary to inform those back home about what is going on in the Lord’s vineyard abroad. So here we are.

Mission Trip to Albania

Alaska is of course one of the 50 states in the U.S, but it might as well be its own country for how different it is from “the lower 48”, the term the natives coined for us. For those that don’t know much about Alaska, it is beautiful, rugged, and everything about it is big. But wait, everything is bigger in Texas, right? Now I’m no expert, and I’ve never been to Texas, but I will go out on a limb and say that whatever Texas has, ain’t got squat on Alaska! Kodiak bears 12 feet tall, thousands of bald eagles soaring above, staggering mountain peaks, and a fishing industry that simply dwarfs the rest of the country. Our contingent experienced the majestic, raw Alaskan frontier to the fullest. On our trip we experienced warm hospitality from the seminary, interacted with fellow seminarians in and outside of

the classroom throughout the week, visited the Holy Resurrection Cathedral where we venerated the relics of St. Herman, and made a pilgrimage to Spruce Island, which was the highlight of it all. Alaska faces problems with domestic abuse and alcoholism and during the trip we(the two professors) helped there future clergy address these issues and minister to those dealing with them. This wasn’t a typical, hands-on mission experience working with people and or erecting buildings. This trip was more about connecting with the seminarians, the locals, and experiencing the 200 year old mission Church in Alaska. I realized how adaptable Christ’s Gospel of love is to any people or population on earth. The native Alaskans received the faith whole heartedly and in mass numbers! The Gospel must be preached to all those on the earth, and then of course those churches must be maintained. My time in Alaska was fulfilling and truly awesome!

How can this be? Forty years of brutal communism and years of war following its’ collapse nearly destroyed the Church; it was in total disarray. A handful of elderly clergy and churches remained. In the last 20 years a beautiful and miraculous revival has occurred mostly in part of the efforts and leadership of one man: Archbishop Anastasios. In all this was an academic class, a spiritual pilgrimage, and ministerial work all rolled up into one trip. We had a week in the classroom and two weeks in Albania. Basically we partook in a whirlwind bus tour around the country in which we visited many of the major cities, experienced the various church ministries, met many clergy and bishops, visited historic and religious sites, all while singing songs and learning about the ancient Church. We also chanted an all-night vigil at St John Vlash monastery, we spent a day at the beach with the children of the Home of Hope, we led discussion groups with university students about contemporary issues they face, we toured a mountainside castle, and even endured a 12 mile pilgrimage/hike led by Bishop John of Korce through arduous terrain en route to a 14th century monastery (the highlight of the trip). In is truly remarkable to have seen, heard, tasted and experienced all that we did in such a short time. To see the fruits of the Archbishop’s labor and then to meet him in the flesh has deeply impacted me. One man really can make all the difference in the world. In his words all it takes is belief that “God is enough”, and anything is possible. Words to live by. The Albanian people live in such poor conditions and depression, poverty and corruption are to found everywhere. Yet the faithful we met in the cities and the villages live with such hope and joy. It never ceased to amaze me how different they lived because their faith brought this. Never have I seen people with so little material wealth, with such spiritual strength! All over the country I witnessed people absolutely on fire for Christ and the faith. No doubt this mission trip was a humbling, edifying, inspiring and truly awesome one.

Orthodox Approach to Missions

The following information is from the Orthodox Christian Missions Center website (www.ocmc.org)

orthodox approach to missionsThe principles used hundreds and thousands of years ago by the Apostles are still imitated today in the Orthodox Church (and other Christian denominations):

• Indigenous leadership• Translation of material into the local language• Worship in the local language of the people• Incorporation of cultural elements into the life of the Church• Building of churches that witness to the glory of God• Vibrant Eucharistic community• Emphasis on the whole person by addressing the needs of society both through education and charitable institutions

are You called to be a missionary?

Is Christ’s Last Command Your First Priority? ; The way to become a disciple is to help “make disciples.” And by responding to God’s call to help change the world, you will forever be changed. Serving Christ and His Church as an OCMC missionary is more than a job, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime in fulfillment of the Great Commission.

Who serves as missionaries?

God is the One who calls men and women, married and single, in every stage of life; from those taking a break between school, to families with young children or teenagers, to ‘empty nesters’ and retired couples, to serve as missionaries. God calls people from all walks of life ranging from priests, monastics, seminarians and teachers to health care professionals, engineers. IT professionals, salesman, laborers, administrators, youth leaders and beyond to commit to missionary service. In other words, God can use your unique gifts, talents, and experience no matter what role or stage of life you are in, as you offer yourself to Christ and the service of His Holy Church.

All applicants for OCMC missionary service must also:

• Have a devoted spiritual life and a deep desire to witness for Christ.• Have been an active member of a canonical Orthodox Church for a minimum of three years.• Be a Canadian or American citizen.• Be able to work obediently as an OCMC missionary employee under the direction of the receiving hierarch in conjunction with OCMC field leadership.• Be willing to live a simple and holy life within the culture and among the people they serve.• Be willing to learn a new language and culture, and learn from the people God calls them to serve.

prayer for missionariesChrist our God, the source of wisdom and Bridegroom of the Church, You called the Apostles to follow You and to become fishers of men, giving them authority to cast out unclean spirits and to heal every disease and infirmity.

You commissioned them to make disciples of all nations and to feed your sheep. On the day of Pentecost, You sent the Holy Spirit to fortify them, enabling them to fill peoples lives with Your saving love. Continue to act today, loving Savior, for the good of Your Holy Church. Send Your Holy Spirit upon dedicated men and women; inspire them to respond to Your Great Commission and to serve You as missionaries, for the building up of Your Body, the Church.

Through the prayers of all the holy missionary Saints, strengthen all who are preparing to serve Your Holy Church in humility and love. For You are a loving and merciful God, and unto You we give glory, together with Your eternal Father, and Your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and forever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Short-Term Mission, Long-Term Effect

Ever thought of serving as a missionary either for a season or even for a career?

While the standard length for long-term service is a two-year renewable term, OCMC is committed to equipping, sending and serving career-oriented missionaries. Additionally, OCMC seeks to provide opportunities for missionary exploration through our team program (1-4 weeks) and those who we consider may be interested in a special mid-term assignment such as a 4-12 week accredited internship as needs in the field dictate.

What are the next steps in discerning your calling?

If you feel God is calling you, speak with your parish priest and then contact the OCMC Missionary Department at 1-877-463-6784. It is never too early to begin a dialog with us, whether you’re ready to go now or simply considering your options. Don’t worry! We won’t try to talk anyone into missionary service and we don’t try to talk people out of it. We will walk with you through the process of discerning God’s good will and to see if doors of opportunity are open for service. If they are, we will guide you through the process of application, appointment, developing a support team, orientation and training and then ongoing field supervision and pastoral support. We are here to help you discern and fulfill your calling.

OCMCOrthodox Christian Mission Center

short-term mission, long-term effectBy Presbytera Vangie Orfankaos

Nearly 23 years ago, in the Summer of 1990, the call to Missions was felt strongly in my heart as I joined a team of Orthodox Christians on a short term missions trip to Magoma, Uganda to build the Presentation Of The Theotokos Orthodox Church. Being guided under the spiritual leadership of Father Martin Ritsi and Presbytera Renee Ritsi, I began to learn firsthand what it meant to live out the Great Commission (Mt 28.16-20) and “Go Forth” not only physically, emotionally, mentally…but in every way possible to give of one’s self fully to Christ in service to help others in need. That Summer changed my life. There are no words to adequately describe the witness that took place as Christ’s love unconditionally unfolded in grace, mercy and sacrifice every step of the way on this missionary journey.

Today, Father Martin is currently the Executive Director of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center and Presbytera Renee is the Teams Associate Director & Healthcare Coordinator of OCMC in Saint Augustine, Florida. But back then, in the early ‘90’s they were missionaries serving in the field and being the team leaders as well as parenting their two children, Stephanos and Nichole. I looked at their family at that time and said to myself, “Wow, these people are brave, they raise their children here amongst the trying conditions, and they have all they need in their faith.” People such as the Ritsi’s changed my life.

For years I kept a photo of little Nichole helping me place bricks in a circle, on the earthen ground of dusty Uganda earth, to help create an oven to bake bread. I had this photo in my own kitchen to help remind me of those years gone by, but to not forget, that me in the dust baking bricks from the earth was a blessing that would never be forgotten. I would see that picture and say “Gee, I wonder if Nichole remembers that time in her life, she was so little.” And I have another memorable moment captured on film when I see the image of Stephanos helping get water from the one large dust-covered rectangular water bin we had at our site. He was a young trooper of sorts and always had a smile and energy for everyone. Now, I believe those children do remember, and they remember by being who God is

Short-Term Mission, Long-Term Effect

calling them to be. Each one of us has a calling. We all find ways to serve.

I bring up this news and share these stories with you now, because I recently received a letter from Stephanos Ritsi and his wife, Alexandria. Stephanos is now a young married man journeying off to Albania to be a long term missionary, serving Christ in the field alongside his wife Alexandria. I share the letter I received from them in the hopes you will be inspired to pray for him and his wife and/or to offer a contribution to their efforts or the efforts of the OCMC, or to any of the missionaries cited on the OCMC website (www.ocmc.org). Who knows, maybe you will be inspired to follow the call and “Go therefore,” (Mt 28.19)

The letter is as follows:

Dear Orfanakos Family,

We greet you in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,

We would like to thank you for your support through our years of preparations to become long term missionaries by supporting us on our Short Term Missions teams. These teams provided a valuable way for us to experience missionary work first hand. We would also like to share some exciting news with you. Since our last OCMC team in 2011, Alexandria and I have finished our schooling at Holy Cross/Hellenic College, Stephanos graduated with a Masters of Divinity with a Certificate in Missions and Ecumenism from the Boston Theological Institute. Alexandria graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and is one test away from receiving her teaching license.

Since graduation we have completed training at OCMC to become long term missionaries and have been assigned to Albania, a country under the spiritual guidance of His Beatitude Archbishop Athanasios. In Albania, Alexandria will serve the Church at the Protagonist School where she will teach English, as well as a spiritual journey program and a character building program. She will help the learning system implemented under Enver Hoxha, during the decades of communist rule. Stephanos will work with the youth of Albania and will focus on a University Ministry that aims to bring the message of hope that our faith offers. One of the dreams of this ministry is to open a Coffee Shop that

will serve as a method of reaching these youth who are beset by the forces of secularism and atheism.

Once again we would like to thank you for your support of our journey towards becoming missionaries. To enter the mission field, we must raise two years of support in advance so that we do not become a financial burden for the Orthodox Church of Albania. We would like to ask if you would prayerfully consider partnering with us in our ministry to the people of Albania. Enclosed with this letter is our prayer card as well as a support envelope. Please consider a monthly pledge to our missionary efforts. If finances are tight in this economy, consider becoming part of our prayer support group by checking “other” and writing Prayers on the line. We hope to hear from you and look forward to sharing with you the work that we will do in Albania.

The Great Commission

the great commissionSermon given by Fr. Peter Orfanakos on August 26, 2012

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.”

The above verse is found in the final chapter and verses of the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 28, Verses 16-20. It is known as the Great Commission. It is read in the Orthodox Church at each and every sacrament of Baptism. It is also read as one of the cycle of eleven Resurrectional Gospel lessons read during the Matins Service on Sunday. Beginning with the Sunday following the celebration of Pentecost, there is a cycle of Gospel lessons that are read, and each eleventh week we hear this very powerful Gospel lesson of Christ appearing to His disciples upon the mountain to which He had directed them.

We are told that He gathered the eleven disciples together in Galilee on a mountain, were He instructed them to go and “When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘all authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.’” It is an incredible, powerful statement that Christ says. Within it He is not only greeting the disciples, He is informing them that through Him, resurrection and power to grant life, has come once again into the world. After blessing the disciples, He tells them: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

We hear this Gospel lesson at our own baptism to remind us that the sacrament is one of welcoming, not an end in itself. It is the sacrament to which we are invited as we become one of the faithful; being one of the faithful comes with a responsibility on our part. There is a responsibility to take that message of love, to take that message of peace, to take that faith, to nurture it, to allow it to grow, to bring it to the world, to show with it, by the example in which we live, so that others - in conversing with us - in observing us and praying with us - may see within us, that Light of the resurrection; that Grace of the Holy Spirit, placed upon our breast, during the Sacrament of Holy Chrismation. That they

may see that Light shinning forth, be called to it, and find themselves also desiring to be baptized, desiring to become children of God.

It is called the Great Commission because we see the immensity of what is being asked of us, and in contemplating that, we recognize that it is not something we can do on our own. So imagine we are being called, we are being told to come forth as we take this great weight, as we try to live up to the examples of Christ and of the Saints themselves.

As we begin to move forward - even crawl at the time of our baptism - to understand that it is not a journey meant to be taken alone. That it is through God’s grace, that we become children of Light, that we carry out this Great Commission. We need to prepare ourselves, we need to be willing, to go forth, be willing to speak, to communicate, to pray.

The Gospel lesson ends with a very powerful message: Christ reminding us that He will be with us to the ages of ages. Reminding us that the Resurrection, the Life that He grants us, was not simply something that was done in a period of history, was not simply an act that took place in the past. It is gift that continues to take place in the present and will always take place in the present until the ages of ages. That is how we are called to live and to celebrate. Constantly glorifying God and giving thanks to Him, forever. Amen.

Every Summer, our Camp Program incorporates a service project to allow campers, counselors, and staff to be aware of the needs of others. We have supported various outreach projects including FOCUS North America and nearby clothing and food shelters. This year we supported the on-going efforts of the Orthodox Christian Missions Center by collecting a donation from all who were part of the Saint Barbara Summer Camp. Pictured above is our camp collections box for the OCMC.

Illumined Path

illumined pathThe Saint Barbara Parishioners gathered prayerfully outside the Church on Great and Holy Friday evening in a procession of the Holy Kouvouklion carrying the Epitaphios. Everyone thoughtfully travelled through the illumined path, as luminaria lit the way for parishioners to sing hymns and pray, as well as to remember their loved ones whose names were handscripted on each luminaria bag.

Sincerest thanks to Terry and Paris (Stamos) Heath for their tireless dedication to this project. The success of this yearly project is only possible through the efforts of the entire community to step forth and support the luminaria lighting on Holy Friday.

Thanks also goes out to all of the Team Members who help map-out and set-up, as well as clean-up the Luminaria area year after year. More than 1,200 Luminaria were lit this year.

Parathosi 2012

parathosi 2012Saint Barbara GOYA wins Senior Division in the Parathosi celebration of Hellenic Song and Dance on April 29th!

The Direct Archdiocesan District held the “Parathosi” festival at Saint Paul Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Hempstead, New York. Parathosi’s main goal is the celebration of the rich Hellenic cultural and ethnic tradition.

The weekend focused on dance and music exhibition, education and inspiration. All parishes from the Archdiocesan District were invited to participate in the Hellenic dance exhibition. Voting for the best dance group was done by the dancer’s peers. Our St. Barbara youth won the senior division dance exhibition; this was the first year that the event was held.

Congratulations to our talented and dedicated youth and to all their instructors who offer their tireless dedication.

GOYA: Look forward to upcoming FALL Retreat and more!

GOYA

goYa continues outreach to our surrounding community

On Saturday, July 14, the GOYA once again helped prepare and serve meals at the Community Dining Room. In 2011 the St. Barbara GOYA made a commitment to support the Community Dining Room in Branford in an effort to fulfill the GOYA mission of service to others. The Community Dining Room serves to end hunger and isolation for its shoreline neighbors (they serve more than 4,000 meals per month). We support them by preparing and serving meals, and supporting their fundraisers and food drives. This new mission has grown in popularity and participation, and both GOYA members and parents provide consistent feedback that they find it to be a enriching experience working for the good of others.

a cultural awareness through danceby Clara Genetos

On August 15th the residents at Whitney Center were entertained by a group of six female Greek dancers from the Young Adults/Youth of Saint Barbara in Orange, CT. The dynamic dancers not only performed several dances, but also initiated audience participation. A few persons accepted the offer to dance, and before you knew it, the atmosphere of the room was uplifted by the sharing of the Hellenic spirit and culture. The event was organized to provide a preview to the Festival which is held on Labor Day weekend at Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Orange. As expected, the dancers were applauded with much enthusiasm and requests to return. It was obvious that the dancers felt the impact they made and promised to return with additional dancers wearing their colorful costumes. It was truly an agape filled moment to remember.

Taverna Night

taverna nightby Mary Bitzarakis

In June, our Community Center was decorated and it was another sold out event! Yes, we are talking about the 6th Annual Taverna Night. The Greek School students, teachers and staff welcomed everybody to an evening of dining and entertaining.

The night began with the introduction of the three graduates of the Greek School program. We thanked them and their families for committing to our program for the past eight years. Although they have graduated, we know they will remain active in our program in the years to come. Our graduates this year were: Elias Bitzarakis, Katerina Esposito and Haritsa Halepas.

As is tradition, the Greek School students started the evening of festivities with a song or two and then led us to begin the evening of dancing. Events and programs like this are successful because of many people who remain committed to our community and our children. Special notes of appreciation cannot be mentioned enough.

• First and foremost, to Father Peter and his spiritual guidance and support throughout the year.

• Our Administrators, Teachers and volunteers who continue to make the Greek School program a success.

• Most importantly, we would like to thank our students and their parents for enthusiastically being a part of our program. As for this evening, we would like to thank:

• Each and every one of YOU who attended the evening and who have once again shown your support of the Greek School program and our fundraising event. • Michael, Anna Albanis and Family who donated all of the ingredients for the delicious dinner

food for thought philotochos annual dinner fashion show

On May 2, 2012 The Ladies Philoptochos Society held their Annual Dinner Fashion Show at Saint Barbara Community Center for a capacity crowd. The theme of “Food For Thought” was evident in the beautiful decorations of food throughout the Hall. Ticket proceeds of $5225 were raised to benefit The CONNECTICUT FOOD BANK, and attendees filled Baskets of Hope with non-perishable items. Nancy Carrington, the Executive Director, spoke about the mission of The Connecticut Food Bank, and shared how the real everyday battle with hunger exists in all communities.

A delicious buffet dinner was prepared by The Greek Olive Restaurant of New Haven, and excellent service was provided by the GOYAns. The meal was completed with dessert prepared by our own bakers.

Fashions by Coldwater Creek at the Milford Marketplace were modeled by women of our parish. Our guest commentator was Erica Grow, News Channel 8 Meteorologist, who added to the event with her lovely personality.

Over 50 raffle prizes were donated by community businesses and friends of the Philoptochos.

The Philoptochos Society would like to thank all the members who served on the committees and friends who supported this event. Your efforts made sure that families in our state don’t go to bed hungry.

saint John oratorical festivalmaria Kaouris receives honorable mention at direct archdiocesan district st. John chrysostom oratorical festival

Student participants and their families gathered at the Church of Our Savior in Rye, New York on Saturday morning May 12 for the Direct Archdiocesan District Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. This Metropolis level competition drew young people from as far away as Washington, DC to present speeches on topics of faith to an audience that included the Chancellor of the Archdiocese, His Grace Bishop Andonios of Phasiane.

The speeches were both inspired and inspiring. Saint Barbara’s own Maria Kaouris presented her speech about the importance of keeping the Sabbath holy in the Junior Division and received Honorable Mention. She was supported by her family and is a fine example to us all. Maria also delivered her speech after the Divine Liturgy at Saint Barbara Church on Mother’s Day.

The following is Maria’s speech.

oratorical festival topic: In our day, when people’s lives have become more and more scheduled with events, how might we reclaim out understanding of Sunday (the Sabbath) as a day of rest and honoring the Lord?

Time and more time, is what much of us rely on. From the first breath, to the last, time is, and always has been of the essence. We create busy schedules incorporating a myriad of activities and a drive to become efficient. At some point we are faced to choose whether or not church can “fit” in our schedules. When we consider if we have time for God, we run the risk of losing our connection with God, and thus losing the meaning of the Sabbath. And what is the Sabbath? How have we gotten lost? And how might we reclaim our understanding of the Sabbath?

The Fourth Commandment states, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” Our 4th commandment directs us to commit ourselves one whole day to God. When we attend Sunday Liturgy, when we pray, when we are doing good for others, we honor this commandment. The Rev. George Mastrantonis writes that, when we dedicate our lives to the Sabbath, we engage in “active renovation” through prayer. I believe this renovation helps us recharge so that we can move through our week with God’s help. And as we go through the week, we need to remember that we must continue to pray and do godly deeds in school, in sports, and with our family. Although we are asked to give one day to God, we are not excused from praying and being good Christians the other six.

And so how have we gotten lost between our scheduled life and the road to Christianity? Why do we choose to attend on some Sundays and are absent from others? Have we gotten so tangled up in our own schedules that the Sabbath becomes obstructed and less of a priority? As Christians we need to remember that the Church must be a priority. Without constant prayer, and I quote from Father Calivas’ “Come Before God”, “the soul is left cold and spiritless.” I thought about this quote, because God is supposed to be a big part of our lives, and if we disregard Him and prayer, we become empty. Do we find ourselves acting ungodly and not following in God’s footsteps? The further away we travel, the

Saint John Oratorical Festival

less we come to church, the less we pray, and the more disconnected we become from God. To reclaim our understanding of the Sabbath, we as individuals have to make our Lord our priority. As a family, we must sit down and make a conscious decision to always keep God on the top of our list. We spend time creating schedules to make sure we have all our activities and events in order, but we must always keep in mind that our time with God comes first. Joining sports or other activities during Sunday mornings takes us away from Christ and our commitment to the Sabbath. We must

center our lives around God, and to keep activities or events away from our time with God. It is very clear that our lives are busy, but we have the power and ability to reclaim and strengthen our time with God. God wants us to give our whole life, and not to hold back. Our lives should always be filled with prayer and an understanding that we need to be connected to God. Worshipping the Lord, attending church, and creating a schedule base around God will keep us true to the Sabbath.

Saint Barbara Summer Camp

Transcendence Tree

Summer... a time for transcendence, a “going beyond,” a delight of the heart to be in the joy of nature and God’s creation. The Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Orange, CT recently hosted a week long Summer Camp with over 275 participants, including 166 campers and counselors ranging in age from 4 - 18 and staff from ages 19 - 90! The beautiful bounty of staff and session leaders, all volunteers, provided the atmosphere for generating the large group gathering to be a place of learning, fun, and growing in God.

Parents also attended, participating in various parts of the program such as the closing ceremonies and the final Olympic team events. This Summer designated the 16th year that the Saint Barbara Summer Camp program has taken place on the beautiful grounds of the Saint Barbara parish and community center.

This year, the camp celebrated the theme “Transcendence” with the planting of a Camp Tree, a Magnolia Galaxy that is unique in its form and flower among the magnolia trees. The ‘Galaxy’ is a single-stemmed, tree-formed magnolia with ascending branches and unlike many magnolias, it grows narrow and upright. In spring, the tree blooms with dark red-purple, goblet-shaped flowers that appear and have a sweet candy-scent.

Campers learned about bravery, courage, continuity, resilience and energy in a faith based environment that was filled with daily prayer service, learning, athletics, arts & crafts, music, campfire songs, skits, and the partaking

of a delicious home-made lunch served daily. Truly it was an extraordinary camp.

Just as the branches of the trees reach out and reach up, so do the hands of all who participated reach beyond and transcend what the eye sees in this world. The overall camp experience broadcast seeds of faith that will reach far beyond the borders of Orange, Connecticut, as campers take the principles they learned and reach out to all the world!

olympics and athletic sessions Pictured to the right, are a few of the photos depicting some of the amazing events that took place in the Camp Olympics. Also each day campers participate in an Athletics Session to help them keep fit - mind, body, and soul!food and festivitiesCampers enjoy fresh fruit and delight in the specialty desserts, while looking forward to CampFest and the surprise Camp Cupcake display (pictured on page 48).

The above image depicts the Saint Barbara Summer Camp T-Shirt for our Transcendence Camp Theme this year. Every year a unique design is inspired and carried out throughout the camp documents as a familiar, recognizable sign to all Camp Staff, Counselors, and Campers. The Camp co-directors, Father Peter and Presbytera Vangie design the T-Shirt year after year to complement the overall Camp learning experience.

The campers were given two simple earthen vessels, essentially terra cotta pots (meaning baked earth) which “went beyond” to become a heavenly lighthouse, shining forth light to God.

Each camper received 2 terra cotta flower pots and 2 bases to the flower pots. The terra cotta earthen pots were placed in front of campers as if the terra cotta pots were being used as flower pots for gardening. Then, campers saw how the pots can be stacked and transformed into a lighthouse, and the light transcends and goes beyond what we can see. This is a reminder of all of the blessings seen and unseen by God to us and to this world.

The Lesson concept of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-9) was learned by campers in Orthodox Life; and the relation of the Earthen Pots to the Light of God.

The seeds that are planted in us, from lessons we learn about faith, can transform us, just as a seed transforms and grows into a plant. For this camp, this year, we learned how to “go beyond” what we see at first – use our “thinking caps” or imagination, or God-given inspiration, and His Heavenly Grace to see the pots (and the invisible seeds of faith) be transformed and become a beacon of light to the world, just as our faith is a beacon of light shining out to all the world. Campers that were here at Summer Camp and went through the program had seeds of faith planted in them and just as the earthen vessels (pots) formed into the lighthouse,

skit & skatterThis session is a fun, creative and imaginative time for campers to apply their talents of singing, dancing, theatre, role play as they integrate the Word Of The Day concepts into song-based or action-based skit lessons that highlight the Camp Theme.

so do the campers that return many years later as staff members of Camp – they now shine forth as beacons of Light.

What we become is our free will. It is up to us to want to be shining for Him during our life. This is why we come to camp. To learn how to be good stewards of the gift of life God gives to each of us freely. Our life is a gift. What we do with it is up to us. We learned how we can transform our life by learning about God.

“Let your light shine and let Jesus shine through you!”

Viewing the above pictures from left to right you can see the creation progression of the Transcendence Mosaic Icon Mirror.

This one of a kind hand-crafted mirror icon project started from paper, and transcended the page by creating an atmosphere of holiness in its design with the Icon of Christ on one side. This icon was created by transforming a white page to a colorful page to create various character aspects in Christ’s face by focusing on His holiness.

Saint Barbara Summer Camp

half-day campThis year we had a very large number of Summer Campers participating in the Half-Day Camp Program, especially designed for ages 4-5.

As the week unfolded the Camp Teacher and Camp Staff promoted the camper’s growth by instilling principles of faith in them through fun activities and lessons centered around scripture and healthy creative learning through lesson plans

designed specifically for the child’s young age group.

The camper’s take-home projects show how busy they were in just one week’s time, and how they grew in God. Their learning experience is an example of Transcendence. It is a “going beyond” just looking at the pieces of paper or sparkly stars they bring home; it is seeing the sparkle in their eyes and praising God who brings this forth, and they each in turn, have been learning how to be a shining star for God.

Half-Day Campers also had practice with tactile learning as many of the activities brought forth the importance of touch and other sensory skills.

Half-Day Campers joined in with the Full Day Camp Program as they experienced the real life planting of a tree when they helped place the freshly toppled earth on top of tree roots to give a safe place for the

Transcendence Tree to grow as they helped plant the Camp Tree at Saint Barbara Church.

At Camp, seeds of faith have been planted in their hearts. May parents and grandparents be able to continue to provide a nurturing faith based environment at home for each child.

Remember, continue to “go beyond” to transcend and to praise God.

Campers found a way to learn how they too look like Christ as they are created - like Him - by God, the Father. Through Christ we are saved, and in the process of being saved, as He is the example to us, we reflect Him in this world. The mirror serves as a reminder for campers to reflect Christ in their daily life and also as a reminder of God’s Light shining through them.

The paper mosaic pieces surrounding the mirror and surrounding the icon of Christ are reminds campers of the paper created from the tree which is nourished from the earth, created by God. It transcended “went beyond” its original brown paper color and shape to becoming something other-wordly (heavenly), something transcendent, by becoming a window to God though the Icon that was created by the campers hand. Campers apply the principles they learned about at Camp: Bravery; Courage; Continuity; Resilience; Energy...and re-group and re-focus on God to see Him in their eyes as they see their reflection in the mirror.

God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1.27)

VolunteerismOur Camp is a 100% volunteer based gathering and we thank all who step forth in love to God to offer freely of their time and talent for Him. We were able to give back to God, in so many ways this summer at camp. We were able to plant a tree, transform earthen clay into a lighthouse, and

share the reflection of who we are to the world and to God through the Camp Mirror Project. These are only a few of the many incredible insights into the camper experience. Seeing the photos and faces framed by nature, nurture, and yes... even nutrition, we are all part of the daily bread as campers partake of Daily Prayer Services, Arts, Crafts, Music, Campfire Songs, Athletics, Olympics, Orthodox Life, Life Adventures, Lunch, Snack, and the Camp Cupcake!

camp crossThe Transcendence Camp Cross is a direct example of the way a tree transforms from Nature’s creation through God’s Hand, from tree to wood, to paper, and by becoming cardboard and it was used as the base board of the project. This cardboard was also used for the Cross which was applied to the base, just as Christ is the application and answer of healing to the world. The wood of a tree becomes the cross; the cross is the Cross of Christ which becomes Life-Giving. His free-will giving of His life is reflected in the jewels that adorn the gold of the Cross. The Camp Cross reminds campers of how the Birth of Christ is a Miracle and all of life is filled with transcendent moments. We are led by God, with Christ, through His real life stories of miracles, to the Cross and Christ’s Resurrection.

Abounding in song and bouncing up off the floor, campers are filled with joy as they sing specialty camp songs, accompanied by the stringed sounds of the guitar by staff member and group leader, Jane Hajedemos. Campers enjoyed the campfire style setting of the sessions with blankets on the floor and star shaped musical “drums” to help keep the rythym.

transcendence light energy neckwear project God created Light. Christ is the Light of the world. The campers strung clear beads with light reflective color and recognized God’s ability to generate energy and light and transform and transcend us and all on this earth. The sun’s energy

transforms food into energy for us, as we are nourished by it, we too must nourish others in the Word of God by reflecting what we learned at Camp. Be a good seed and help broadcast the Word (God’s Word) as the sower broadcasts seeds over a great distance to take root in good soil. Campers are reminded of this as they see their wrist or neckwear reflecting God’s Light. It is a reminder for campers and counselors to keep watch over the choices of their hands, and in what they consume, in what activities they participate. May the Cross and Light Energy Reflective Bead Neckwear remind us all that “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

Saint Barbara Summer Camp - Odyssey Festival 2012: Through The Eyes of Our Guests

odyssey 2012:through the eyes of our guestsby: Steven Yates

The dictionary defines “odyssey” as “an epic journey” and also as “an intellectual or spiritual wandering or quest”. The Saint Barbara parish 2012 Odyssey festival truly fits both of those definitions and goes far beyond them. For those of us who participate in the Odyssey as workers of one sort or another, the event is a time of planning, work, fellowship, and service. But for the many hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors to our church home, it is a different experience. As I wandered among the crowds, I tried to observe the festival through the eyes of these visitors and to learn what it was like for them.

As Father Peter said in a pre-festival radio interview, our festival provides a chance for visitors to experience Greece without having to get on an airplane. Arriving guests are greeted by parishioners who welcome them and help them park their cars. I heard more than one of the “parking specialists” tell newly arriving guests, “Welcome. We are glad you are here. Enjoy!” Many visitors used the festival program as their tour map to guide their wanderings or to assist them in getting to the food items or events they had come for. While many of our guests are of Greek heritage, many more are not. The music of the bouzouki was exotic to their ears and the smell of moussaka and pastitsio were unfamiliar and alluring. I saw several festival workers in their aprons giving directions to guests, always with a smile and a welcoming word of greeting.

Pictured are some of the Camp Staff who meticulously monitor their specific areas so campers are provided with proper materials and atmosphere to enjoy creating their own unique Saint Barbara Camp Projects and to participate in Sessions, Large Group Gatherings and meals. We also include in our camp staff the office personnel, Lea Loussides and Clara Genetos. The tireless efforts and dedication of all the present Camp Staff, as well as so many of our parishioners who have participated in the Summer Camp Program in the past sixteen years, do not go unnoticed. Although not mentioned by name, you know who you are, and more so God sees and knows each person’s heart, so thank you for opening your heart to Him and bringing forth what you have to offer to help His children grow!

Odyssey Festival 2012: Through The Eyes of Our Guests

It was interesting to hear people in the crowd talking about their anticipation of watching the dancing or finding bargains in the “Junque ‘n Treasures” area. So many of these people were returning to our festival after enjoying it in years past. These folks were easily spotted as they made a “bee-line” to the baklava sundaes or the Greek grocery store. They did not want to miss a chance to experience again the sensations they had enjoyed before. More than one visitor was guided by the PA system announcements to the Snack Bar, Meze Grill or the Restaurant for the treats that were unique to those locations. And each of those venues had its own charm and character.

Visiting VIPs, among them elected officials and candidates, commented on the size and character of the festival. Not lost on them was the uniqueness of this event as compared to the many agricultural or civic fairs that fill the calendar at this time of year. There is

something special about Odyssey, each remarked. It must be a treat for a politician to come to a non-partisan event where music and laughter drown out the din of debate. Most special of all, perhaps, was the effect that walking into our Sanctuary had on those who had never been inside before. Jaws literally dropped as visitors beheld the “earthly heaven” that is so familiar to members of our church family. Just as the ancient wonders of Greece must become commonplace to the people who live among them, the ornate, unique, and beautiful iconography of our church is something we have grown accustomed to seeing each Sunday. It is a reminder of how blessed we are to see our guests craning their necks to see all of the gorgeous depictions of the saints and of the life of Our Lord which cover the walls and ceiling. Father Joel provided insight and commentary that gave meaning to these sights beyond mere artworks. Many guests lingered to chat further with him and to soak up the beauty and majesty of our church home after his

Odyssey Festival 2012: Working Together Builds Our Community of Faith

presentations had concluded.

How wonderful it was to see old friends meeting again under the dining tents, sharing delicious treats and enjoying the beautiful weather and the ever-present music. Parents fed their young children, took them on exciting rides, and taught them to enjoy the color and motion of the dancers who gracefully circled before them. The hillside overlooking the dance area was filled with people sitting on the grass, nibbling on pastries and being transported to distant villages and islands of Greece through the sights and sounds.

As people reluctantly left the festival, I heard our “parking specialists” thank them for coming. I saw people who had not just eaten and shopped and heard music, but who had experienced an epic journey of the mind and spirit, who had taken the time to wander through a culture and a community of faith and had been touched by the experience. This is how Odyssey 2012 affected the people who came to it. They are already looking forward to their next Odyssey.

odyssey 2012: Working together builds our community of faithby: Steven Yates

Throughout the year, we, the parishioners of Saint Barbara, have many opportunities to interact with each other. Of course, we worship together each Sunday and on special holy days. The Ladies Philoptochos Society promotes charitable, benevolent and philanthropic outreach. The Golden Years Club meets and travels for fun and enrichment. JOY and GOYA groups meet and provide positive activities for our youth. But the preparation for, and work during and after, the annual Odyssey festival is unique in our church community. Every parishioner, from the very young, to the very “not-so-young” is called to help make this major event in the life of our church a success. No other single event mobilizes so many members of the community, takes so much time and effort, and helps to bring our community of faith closer together.

Planning for the next Odyssey begins as soon as the last Odyssey ends with a “post mortem” discussion of what went well or not so well and what can be done to improve the event. The planners and chair-people of the event put in uncountable hours and make this event the centerpiece of their year. They sacrifice precious vacation days, drive many miles in their personal vehicles, and make trips to Costco, Home Depot and restaurant supply stores. It is impossible to list their many activities in this space. Think of every single item you see at the Odyssey from the tents to the soft drinks, from the grills to the folding chairs, from the children’s rides and games to the porta-potties. All of it must be planned and coordinated. Years of experience and trial and error have taught the past organizers of the Odyssey the lessons they have passed on to the current organizers.

Baking of pastries and preparation of the specialty dishes begins weeks and months before the Odyssey begins. Seniors, young people, and anyone who can help contribute many days of careful, skilled work to make many thousands of pastry items and many hundreds of trays of food.

When the day comes to extract the counters and walls and cooking gear from their storage places, dozens of young men and not-so-young men give up their Saturday morning to do this heavy work. Pick-up trucks and

strong backs lift and carry the pieces to the sites where they will be assembled. Smart and careful plans have been made in past years to assure that everything is set up properly. No detail is too small. It all fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.

Once the tents are delivered, the pieces are assembled in their proper configurations. This work takes place during the days and evenings leading up to the festival. A relative handful of dedicated workers, always including the chair-people, take vacation days from their jobs to do these tasks. Gas for cooking must be installed. Electricity must be supplied. Water must be supplied. Drainage lines must be installed. Signage must be hung. Painting must be done. The hours spent getting the venue prepared for the first visitors are incalculable.

As the Odyssey’s opening draws near, food preparation swings into high gear. This year 1400 pounds of pork was cut, seasoned and skewered by hand. Dozens of legs of lamb were seasoned, roasted, sliced and portioned. Likewise hundreds of trays of gyro meat was portioned and packaged. Large refrigerated trailers are put in place and filled with produce, milk and whole lambs for the spit.

Before many of the workers who participate in the four-day festival itself put on their nametags and aprons, a mountain of labor has already gone into Odyssey’s preparation. The scale of it is truly mind-boggling. Of course, the four days of the Odyssey are filled with even more work. Every booth from the Book Store to the Pastry Shop to the Greek Grocery Store to the Junque ‘n Treasures Bazaar to all of the food venues are manned (and wo-manned) throughout the festival. Young people collect trash and used food trays. They supply napkins and clean food trays. The dancers, who have been rehearsing for weeks under the guidance of volunteers, don costumes and perform. Let’s not forget the musicians and raffle ticket sellers and PA announcers and cooking demonstration presenters and dishwashers and those who order more food as needed and those who donate and supply such items. The list goes on and on.

And what is the effect of all this work on the parishioners who do it? Surely so much effort and stress against a deadline with the uncertainty of weather and crowds must take a toll on the good will of so many

people doing so much work for no pay. Strangely, these wonderful people actually seem to enjoy it! Smiles outnumber frowns. Laughter is heard throughout the Odyssey. Hugs and kisses and handshakes and high-fives are everywhere! Oddly, it turns out that there is no better way to get to know someone than to work with them. And the harder the work that is shared, the closer the bond that is formed. The dirtier the job to be done, the more the people doing it laugh once it is done. Yes, there are moments of frustration. We are only human. But we are all working toward the same goal. We all want the same thing. We are all one family.

What greater joy is there than watching a grandmother supervising her daughter as her grand-daughter helps out? What is more rewarding than seeing grown sons doing the work their father did the year before? How can one feel anything but happiness when a cousin or uncle is helping out an aunt or a godparent? The joy of friend helping friend is infectious. Just when the grind of cooking or serving tray after tray of food gets to be too much, a friend is there is offer you a cool drink or a helping hand. When one of us is high on a ladder to change a light bulb, another is there to steady the ladder. New parishioners quickly find a place to fit in and someone happy to “show them the ropes”. “Old timers” fill the hours of work with stories of past festivals at Racebrook Road or at Lighthouse Point. There are remembrances, large and small, of the Odyssey workers who came before us, some of whom have passed on. A toast is offered each year. And I was astounded to learn that George Faracles’ calculations of the numbers of trays of each type of food consumed each day of the festival remains a nearly 100% accurate guide! In such ways, our predecessors are always with us.

Working at the Odyssey festival provides us, the parishioners of Saint Barbara church, with the opportunity to see each other in a different light than we would otherwise ever get to experience. It breaks down barriers that separate young from old, Greek from convert, and teachers from students. When we are all working together, we are all the same. When we all put the cause of our church above ourselves, we are truly brothers and sisters in the church. Jesus called upon His disciples to elevate themselves by becoming servants of all. Through their labor, all of the workers at the Odyssey festival are answering His call.

camp saint paul:my experience over the Yearsby: Peter Romanowsky My time at Camp Saint Paul (CSP) has been a blessed experience. This is my third year as a staff member and each year has been better and better. My first year I started out fresh in that I had never had been a staff member before at any camp. The first couple days where tough, but with faith in Christ, I made all three weeks. The daily worship was an essential part in my experience, because as Orthodox Christians, we are a liturgical church and I really enjoy the services because they calm the senses and the soul to help us pray and focus on Christ. As the summer activities unfolded, I really enjoyed the jet skies and the giant waterslide.

I also really enjoyed the sessions that are provided as part of the experience of CSP. The Orthodox life session is, for me, one of the most beneficial times during the day, aside from worship, that I really take away from the lessons of the Gospel, to apply them when I leave from camp and grow in my faith. Camp Saint Paul is, for me, a learning aide also for my future time at Holy Cross Seminary. Camp Saint Paul is a mirror of the kingdom of God. There is only the love of Christ, which is abundant at CSP and the Saints are surrounding us with their presence.

Presbytera’s Paragraph

presbytera’s paragraphBy: Vangie Ellen OrfanakosA written column of comfort for the weary soul. May these writings refresh your determination to grow in the knowledge of our Lord.

shape and form VEO

Shape and Form ever mindful of sacrifice chaste mind pure heart perpetual memory praying with rememberence of God in all things

He is the hallmark life giver pouring forth sounds senses sense out of nonsensicle triune oneness a shining shield

Created in and by sacrificial love the ever forming essence who shapes us, as in water-worn smoothness on rock on wood on skin for salvation.

Jesus often taught in parables, and as the blessed Jerome tells us that Christ taught in different types of parables, for different types of hearers. He writes, “the crowd is not of a single mentality for each person has a different frame of mind. He therefore speaks to them in many parables so that they may receive different teachings depending on their frame of mind. Further, it should be noted that He did not speak everything to them in parables, but many things, for if He spoke everything to them in parables the people would go away without gaining anything. Jesus mixes what is clear with what is obscure, so that through the things they understand, they may be drawn toward the knowledge of the things they do not understand.” As heard of The Path podcast, July 6, 2012 on www.ancientfaith.com

The reading is from Mark 4:10-23At that time, when Jesus was alone, those who were about him with the twelve asked him concerning the parables. And he said to them, “To you has been given the secrets of the kingdom but for those outside everything is in parables; so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand; lest they should turn again, and be forgiven.” And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? The sower sows the word. And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown; when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word which is sown in them. And these in like manner are the ones sown upon rocky ground, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. And others are the ones sown among thorns; they are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world, and the delight in riches, and the desire for other things, enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. But those that were sown upon the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a bushel, or under a bed, and not on a stand? For there is nothing hid, except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Letters to the Saint Barbara Parish

letters to the saint barbara parish

clergy-laity congress

Dear Father Peter and Saint Barbara Community,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent our Parish at the 41st Clergy-Laity Congress in Phoenix, Arizona. It was a spiritually renewing experience. The conference confirmed what I already knew to be true; our Community is blessed to have Father Peter as our spiritual leader and to have so many devoted and hard working parishioners. Based on what I heard, it appears that we are on the forefront of having many programs already in place that meet the diverse needs of our Parish. Our Community gives us many opportunities to ‘grow in our faith’ which was a theme of the Congress. Thank you for giving me such a wonderful and unique opportunity.

Faithfully,Ana Goodrich

internet services

Dear Father Orfanakos,

I am writing to you to express my gratitude and appreciation for the live web casting of Sunday services from your parish. Enclosed please find a check for $500 in support of maintenance and continued development of this very valuable endeavor.

My parents, Chrysoula and Efthymios Ponticas, are devout Orthodox Christians and for 55 years have attended Sunday services at our Annunciation Cathedral in Baltimore, MD. Health issues sometime prevent them from attending services. This past winter, for example, they were unable to go to church for over three months. Your webcast has been and continues to be a lifesaver for my parents. My parents find enormous peace and comfort when they are able to participate in your web casted Divine Liturgy on Sundays when illness keeps them home bound.

Although my church attendance is nowhere near the level of my parent’ over the years, I want to support

the outreach that Saint Barbara’s offers to parishioners like my parents. Please accept my offering and know that I give it with humility from deep within my Greek Orthodox spirit.

Sincerely,Yula Ponticas, Ph.D.

Dear Revered Father Orfanakos,

A back injury encumbered me during this past Holy Week, however, I was able to listen to numerous services via the internet. I am thankful for the internet ministry of Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church. Your sermons are meaningful, inspiring and very much appreciated. Please direct the enclosed donation as you see fit.

Sincerely,Michael Boulegeris

connecticut food bank

Dear Father Orfanakos and Children of the Saint Barbara Sunday School,

Thank you very much for your contribution of 123.8 pounds of food. Your support is invaluable to Connecticut Food Bank in our mission to alleviate hunger. Connecticut Food Bank takes in food donated by growers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and food drives and distributes it to 600 community-based programs throughout six Connecticut counties. Last year, we distributed almost 17 million pounds of food and since our founding in 1982 we have distributed more than 200 million pounds of food. Feeding people

contributes to their empowerment. Hungry adults become too weak or sick to take control of their lives. Hungry children are not able to learn at the same pace as well-nourished children because they find it difficult to concentrate on their schoolwork. When children do not learn at school, they are far less likely to become productive adults. Through food distribution, education and advocacy, Connecticut Food Bank is working to alleviate hunger. Thank you for being a part of the solution. We simply could not accomplish all we do without the generous support of our donors. Your contribution has made a positive difference in the lives of our neighbors in need and is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,Jennifer ThomasEvents & Promotions Coordinator

Dear Members of the Saint Barbara Philoptochos Society,

What a pleasure it was to receive your donation of $5,225.00 representing net proceeds from the Philoptochos Fashion Show! This gift will allow us to immediately provide more than $26,000 worth of food at wholesale value to the many households throughout Connecticut who are struggling to keep food on their table. On behalf of the individuals and families who will benefit from this donation, we are deeply grateful to the Saint Barbara Philoptochos Society for selecting Connecticut Food Bank as the recipient of this gift. As these difficult economic times continue, the effort to feed our neighbors in need is becoming exceedingly challenging. Every donation of food, money and time can make a difference in the life of someone who does not have enough to eat every day. We simply could not accomplish all that we do without the generous support of our donors. Thank you again for partnering with us to alleviate hunger among food-insecure residents who depend upon Connecticut Food Bank and its member programs, including soup kitchens, pantries and shelters, for sustenance. Together, we can feed hundreds of thousands of people and provide hope for a better tomorrow.

Sincerely,Nancy L. CarringtonPresident & Chief Executive Officer

Dear Father Peter and members of Saint Barbara Church,

Thank you so much for the use of your beautiful community center for our recent Pasta Festa! event. I have heard so many comments from members of the Orange Senior Center and the community about what a lovely event it was and how impressed they were with Saint Barbara’s. I can’t tell you how much we appreciated your hospitality. It was wonderful working with the custodians, they were so helpful. Again, thank you for your hospitality and for your inspirational invocation. It was a wonderful evening.

letter of appreciation and thanks

Dear Father Peter, Theo Nicolakis, President and Esteemed Members of the Parish Council,

Christos Anesti! Christ is Risen!

Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your kindness and generosity for again inviting me to chant during Holy Week this year. The week was inspiring and beautiful as it has been in the past. It is a joy for me to be able to chant in your beautiful church and for such a wonderful community. It is spiritually uplifting for me to worship with Father Peter as he presides over the services with humility and dignity. Also, it is so encouraging to see the Parish Council and other volunteers of the Community work so well together. You exemplify through your good work and preparation, the positive, organized and sacred way that a parish is organized and conducts its business. Your work is so noticed and appreciated. Again, thank you for welcoming me into your community, for your generosity and for the living example of a Greek Orthodox community that serves its people in such a beautiful manner.

Sincerely and respectfully in the light of the resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ,John A. Heropoulos

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” John 14:6

Icon of ChristThis beautiful mosaic Icon of Christ was created through the Saint Barbara Summer Camp Campers and Counselors hands as they took pieces of recycled craft paper, painted the paper, cut the paper into small pieces and arranged the painted paper pieces on a larger background paper to create this beautiful one of a kind Icon. It transcended “went beyond” its original paper color and shape to become something other-wordly (heavenly), something transcendent, by becoming a window to God through the Icon that was created through their hands working together as a group for the good, for God.
