“It’s so pristine. You go in there and it’s like an escape.” – Dan Maples

The award-winning Olde Mill – a resort, residential and mountain lifestyle community celebrating a $12 million renovation – an-

nounces enhancements to its Ellis Maples-designed course are rapidly approaching completion. Hallmarks of the project include adding a wall-to-wall irrigation system, layout changes to several holes and aes-thetic transformations by Dan and Bradley Maples. Pinehurst residents Dan (son of Ellis) and Bradley Maples (grandson) led the renovation of the family patriarch’s 18-hole, par-72, 6,833-yard championship layout and enhancements will grace almost every hole. However, the intent and shot values of Ellis Maples’ ac-claimed design will remain intact. Opened in 1972, Olde Mill holds a 4½-star rating from Golf Digest magazine’s “Best Places to Play” (out of five possible stars) and features water coming into play on 16 holes. “The course at Olde Mill which Mr. Ellis Maples conceived was based in large part on his respect and admiration for the work of legendary golf architect Donald Ross,” says Hagen Giles, General Manager, who has been at Olde Mill for more than 25 years. “Dan and Bradley did a great job helping us bring the course up-to-date without losing those classical, original design principles which have made Olde Mill such a highly regarded playing experience. With our enhanced playability for all types of golfers and upgraded overall layout, we’ve ensured that Olde Mill will continue to shine for years to come.” The original Maples design stretched 6,833 yards from the tips. As part of the course renovation the back tees have been lengthened to 7,100 yards to further test better players while seniors, juniors, begin-ners and less-accomplished players will find the new layout more play-able as other sets of tees have been adjusted to best embrace all level

of players. Cart paths were repositioned and bridges were rebuilt as well as all 70 sand bunkers renovated with sand from the Sandhills of North Carolina – adding to the regional flavor of the course. The Maples have been multi-generational Pinehurst residents and, of course, Don-ald Ross’ legacy there is well documented. Other changes to the course include the 1st hole being switched from a par 4 to a par 5, while the reverse will occur on No. 18. Fairway and greenside bunkers were reshaped, removed or added on 12 of the holes. The 9th got new tee boxes and a fairway eight feet higher in elevation with two new bunkers along the left side of the fairway. And the work on No. 15 – which will perhaps be the most dramatic change in the extensive renovation – will include removing trees and bunkers and the fairway being completely repositioned. Nestled in the serene Blue Ridge Mountains, Olde Mill’s expan-sive community is an awe-inspiring backdrop for golf, dining, leisure activities and relaxing at home with family and friends. Additional, ex-tensive enhancements are ongoing at Olde Mill, including the addition of luxury yet affordable condos, manors and single-family, custom cot-tages and estate homes. Real estate prices range from $200,000 to more than $1 million. Maples Restaurant at Olde Mill and The Tavern at Olde Mill have been completely renovated – including the addition of acclaimed Chef Ed Badgett – and offer culinary options as well as a variety of food, family and entertainment events.

Director of Real Estate Sales The first half of my life was spent in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After grad-uating from Penn State, I started my journey of 20 years building my career in golf equipment sales. Eventually, I moved into real estate about five years ago. This is the third master planned community I have been fortunate enough to be a part of, and I am very excited to be back in Virginia where I laid a few roots down originally in the Shenandoah Valley. Southwest Virginia is rich with history and natural wonders such as the

Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Park-way and the beautiful New River.

Head Golf Professional

I was introduced to the game of golf at the age of eight at Olde Mill. Olde Mill at this time was a spectacular new golf course masterfully designed by Ellis Maples. At age thirteen Olde Mill gave me my first job working at the golf club and I never looked back. Golf became my passion and I chose it as my career.

Working hard at Olde Mill and learning the game of golf blessed with a golf scholarship and the privilege of attending Concord University in West Virginia. Upon graduation with a degree in Tourism and Resort Management I started my career at The Greenbrier, one of the top resort destinations in the country. I worked as an assistant golf Professional and soon after entered the PGA PGM program.

After my completion of the PGA PGM program I was re-cruited by a private country club, Cross Creek in Mount Airy, NC as the Assistant Golf Professional. Moving from the a resort industry to a private golf program in a country club was an exciting change.

In July 2008 I was offered the opportunity to return to Olde Mill as the Head Golf Professional, a decision that was an easy one. This is and has always been a very special place for me and to be a part of its new growth and development is not only an honor but a responsibility I am proud to accept. Being a part of Olde mill has enabled me to return to the place I have always loved and called home.

spent perfecting your golf game. Chef Ed Badgett, III heads up the team at Maples Restaurant at Olde Mill (formerly Niblicks). Renamed after course designer Ellis Maples, Maples Restaurant is the perfect place to hold your family gatherings, parties, and corporate events. Delicious Meals - Discriminating Tastes

Bon Appétit!

What’s more exciting and induces more passion than a fine wine that offers a connec-tion to the collective soul of past ages, or a meal so scrumptious you remember it with fondness years down the road? Introducing and educating members on just such passions is a rewarding part of my career as Executive Chef at Maples Restaurant at Olde Mill. A twenty-year journey has led me through the southeastern corner of the United States. I start-ed cooking while in college to earn some money and it turned into a lifelong career! I enjoy all aspects of the field including catering, private home parties, and ice carv-ing. Trust me when I say I know how to feed your dis-criminating tastes! I have been a private chef in several cities in south Florida for Northern Trust banks, while teaching culinary classes at night at South Tech in Boyton Beach, FL. I have enjoyed many rewarding positions with

different resorts and restaurants: Execu-tive Chef of Green Valley Country Club in Greenville, SC; Executive Chef of American Accents and 309 State Bistro in Greensboro, NC; Working Chef Trillium Golf Resort in Cashiers, NC; Executive Chef of Asheboro Country Club in Asheboro, NC; Working Chef at Cross Creek Country Club in Mt. Airy, NC; and Executive Sous Chef at the Under-

current Restaurant in Greens-boro, NC. I have also assisted in several restaurant openings, as consulting chef at Jordan’s, Fresco’s and Misty Mountain Bakery in the Greenville, SC area. I was a personal chef for furniture companies at the High Point Furniture Mart for the spring and fall international furniture markets. I look forward to serving the patrons at Maples Restau-rant at Olde Mill and hope to

create many wonderful dishes that will quench your thirst for great wine and feed your hun-ger for great food!

New Neighborhoods Created for Olde Mill It’s 6 AM. You can’t help that you’re an early riser. You left the bustle of the city behind you for a stay at your dream of a home in the Blue Ridge Mountains, fully intend-ing to sleep in till 9AM. That would be a late start for you. Laying there, the sun peaking through the curtains fills you with a sense of true awakening. You decide to go ahead and make a cup of coffee and slip out onto your deck while you watch the sun come up over the velvety greens of the golf course. A mama and her baby deer nibble peacefully on the edges of the grass in your back yard. Birds chirp and tweet a bright good morning. This is living. You take a deep sip of your coffee, prop your feet up and lean back a bit. What will this beautiful mountain day bring to you? A day of golf ? A night of fine dining? Perhaps a dip in the pool? An outing to a nearby shop or outdoor excursion? This is living with the most beautiful of life’s choices at your fingertips. And

they’re all yours. Notes from a Luncheon ...July 23, 2009

Norris Mitchell’s VisioN

Olde Mill owner Norris Mitchell talks to us about his vision behind developments and Olde Mill “We try to develop golf courses and facilities that are very good and that they include the means to pay for them-selves forever (amenities, attractions and services for mem-bers which create demand). “This means people have to pay their dues because we are not going to be there forever; we try to develop the financial infrastructure so that our developments can be fi-nancially self-sufficient. To that end we try to get staff and managers who are the best available, such as Bo from the Greenbrier and Chef Ed from the private country club in the Western NC mountains.”

Who is Norris Mitchell “I’m 72 and I came from there (near Olde Mill). Mom was a schoolteacher, Dad a farmer. I grew up on a cattle farm and we ran a sawmill. The reason I went to college is because Dad bought a tractor with headlights. Norris laughs when he tells that tale. “The town I grew up in is 20 miles from Olde Mill on the other side of Hillsville. The nearest town name is Mitch-ell’s Crossroads, but Sylvatus is the postal name of the town, which is the name of one of our family’s ancestors. “I graduated from Virginia Tech in 1958 with a de-gree in aeronautical engineering. I spent 15 years in the missile business, first going to California, then back to Douglas Air-craft in Charlotte, NC. I helped work on the Nike, Hercules and Ajax projects. The SoCal/LA area was not for me. “I got out of the missile business with a friend who worked with me at Douglas. His wife worked in Real Estate and I started to buy land and houses—they were doing the same. We’ve been partners now for 41 years. My friend died in the fall of ‘08 but I still partner with his wife Betty. We never had a written contract or even a handshake…we just went to work together. “We started buying apartments together, working nights and weekends on the Real Estate projects in Arlington and other local areas; we own a Comfort Inn on Glebe Road. We developed three hotels, two of which we sold; we did a housing development in Delaware, but we’ve mostly worked in the DC area, though we do own some apartments in Roa-noke (Harttown by Valley View Mall and the airport), and a couple over on the southern side (Yorktown and The Ridge), and some Lynchburg townhouses. “We’ve been in Olde Mill about two years now. I go

to a couple (Virginia Tech) football games a year. I endow an engineering professorship. Frank Beamer is from Hills-ville. About 18-19 of my college friends still go to a football game each year and we’ve been doing it ever since we gradu-ated. Our numbers are down since some have died or don’t feel well enough to go anymore, but we still have a fair sized group and it’s a lot of fun. “Part of our motivation to go with Olde Mill is it’s a beautiful place and it seemed like a good investment, al-though I don’t play golf. We approached the local hospital when we heard they were having trouble hiring doctors, so the Human Resource folks came down here to scout the area. There’s an urgent care center in Laurel Fork and the nearest hospital is in Galax. “I’m not interested in anything but value at Olde Mill, though I probably won’t live to see it finished. We’re building for others to come and it will do a lot for the area. It is a great economic development engine for the area, preserving the area in a responsible way. “We’re good for the area because we will bring in a lot of taxes but not generate the need for a lot of services (such as schools, since this likely won’t be a place where young fam-ilies grow up, rather, it will attract Baby Boomers, retirees, and Virginia Tech grads who want a getaway or second home or mountain retreat). “I own a second home about 20 miles from Olde Mill. I bought farmland in the area over the years. Olde Mill sits on about 850 acres and I probably have another 800 acres in the area.”
