    INT. HENRYS HOUSE DAY

HENRY wakes up with a start. He hears car alarms blaring, andpeople shouting at each other. The sound is muffled.

Henrys 17 year old forehead is sweaty, and he has driedblood on his nose. He rubs his head, and turns over.

He can see directly out the window. He can see directly intopeople fighting, stealing, and dying on his suburban street.

He sees a man run down the street, holding a gun. A woman isrunning behind him, holding out her arms as if to beckon himback. He turns around, and fires. It grazes her in the leg,and she falls to the ground.

Henry raises his hand to his forehead, and wipes away thesweat. He coughs into his hand, and a little trace of bloodcan be seen.

    Henry looks around.

    HENRY(sick)(faintly)

    Mom! Mom!

Nobody responds. He rolls back over, and falls back into a

    restless sleep.

    INT. HENRYS HOUSE DAY

Henry wakes up. His forehead is sweatier than usual, but theworld has lost its blur. He looks outside. There is no chaosleft. The streets are empty. Abandoned cars and shards ofglass lie all over the road.

Henry sits up, and holds his head. A headache has come overhim. Despite that, he walks over to his bathroom, and takesout Tylenol. He pops two in his mouth, and swallows them dry.

He looks into the mirror, and sees blood stains under hisnose. He frowns, and grabs a washcloth. He begins to wipe

them off, and realizes that he needs water. He wipes off therest of the blood and throws the stained washcloth onto thetiled bathroom floor.

Henry walks down the staircase of his large house. He looksrelaxed, even though his parents are nowhere to be seen. Hewalks into the kitchen, and takes a glass out of thecupboard. He walks over to the sink, and turns on the faucet.

The water comes out in a steady stream, but only for a fewseconds. It then begins to dwindle away, until only a dropfalls into Henrys half-empty glass.

Henry looks at the faucet, puzzled. He turns it on and off,but nothing more comes out. He frowns, and looks under thesink. He cannot tell if anything is wrong, but he assumesthat itll be fixed, as shown by his facial expression.

He shrugs, and opens the fridge. The light is off, and thestench of moldy bread emits from the fridge. Henry sniffs, and holds his nose, coughing. He grabs a water bottle, andcloses the fridge, still holding his nose.

He walks out of the room, and back upstairs. He sits down on

his bed, and drinks half of the water bottle. He sighs, andlies back down on his bed. He looks over at his clock to seewhat time it is, and notices that there is no time comingfrom the electronic alarm clock.

Henry pulls out his phone, and turns it on. It is 1 PM, buthe notices that he has no signal. Henry frowns, knowing thatsomething is wrong now. He puts his phone down on his nightstand, and walks back down to the kitchen.

This time, he notices something on the counter, near thedoor. It is a note, in neat, cursive writing. Henry picks itup, and begins to read. As he reads, his eyes begin to showfear, and worry. He puts the note down, and leans against thecounter. He sighs, and looks around.

    INT. HENRYS HOUSE DAY

Henry is shoving things into an already stuffed backpack. Hethrows in water bottles, toaster pastries, walkie talkies, and a toothbrush. His face is rushed, his eyes determined.

He looks at the note again, and slips it into his pocket.Walking out the door, he slings the backpack over oneshoulder, and looks back at his house.

His eyes show disappointment in leaving, but Henry knows thathe has to go.

    EXT. ORIGINAL TOWN DAY

He sets out onto the street. He looks out, and doesnt see asoul.

He walks down the street, and turns onto the main road in thetown. Along the roads, there are a few dead bodies, butmostly broken shards of glass and abandoned cars.

Henry does not seem to pay much attention to these featuresof the new world. Instead, he walks down the road, wherehouses and civilization begin to fade away.

    INT. BEDROOM DAY

MICHAELHe was such a good kid. Always knewthe right thing to do.

JULIEI miss him. I hope hes alright.

MICHAELI dont know if he will be, he waspretty sick when we left him.

    JULIE

I still feel such guilt because ofthat.

MICHAELSo do I, but it was beyond ourcontrol.

JULIEThey wanted a better country, butinstead they got no country at all.

    MICHAEL(absentmindedly)

    Mm.

JULIEIve stopped wishing we could goback. Theres no use.

MICHAELMaybe someday. Maybe not in ourlifetime, but in someone elses.

    EXT. HIGHWAY DAY

Henry has moved from civilization to a barren road.

His eyes are weary for the dangers ahead, but even they donot know the extent of what is to happen to Henry. He walks

ahead, oblivious to the world beyond his small town, and whatthat world has become.

His backpack is now slung over two shoulders, and his facehas a darkened determination spread across itself.

There are no cars on the highway. A car horn blares in thedistance. A few rusted car parts lie on the highway.

Henry stops, and looks at a car door. The glass is broken, and there are a few remnants of human blood on there. Thehandle is only hanging on by wires, and the paint is chipped,

    faded, and rusty.

    He continues to walk.

    EXT. HIGHWAY NIGHT

Henry sits on the side of the highway. The sun has justrecently set, as there is a faint trace of sunlight lingeringin the air.

His backpack is next to him, and a sleeping bag is laid out

under Henry. His water bottle is empty. He reaches for it,and realizes that.

Henry begins to rummage through his backpack, and pulls outanother water bottle. He takes a sip, and puts the cap backon.

A loud bang is heard off in the distance. Henry turns hishead towards the sound the same way that a dog reacts.Shouting follows, and Henry turns back to his thoughts.

He takes another drink of his water bottle, leaving it about

1/4 empty. He lies down on his sleeping bag, keeping his eyesopen.

He will not be getting a lot of sleep that night, nor any ofthe nights to follow for a very long time.

    INT. BEDROOM DAY

JULIESometimes I wish fate had taken adifferent route, though.

    MICHAELHow so?

JULIEMaybe we never collapsed. Maybeeverything resolved and we wentback to normal.

MICHAELThat could happen for all we know.

    JULIE

But it wont. The rest of the worldis thriving without us.

    MICHAELTheyll see.

JULIEI really dont think they will.

    Beat.

    MICHAEL

You know, its not our fault thatwe got caught up in all of this. Wejust happened to be on the losingside.

JULIEWe had a chance to switch over.

    MICHAELBut we were loyal.

    JULIE

    (scoffs)Like that paid off.

    MICHAELIt might someday.

    MICHAELDont say that, Julie.

    JULIEIts true.

MICHAELIt might be, but we can keep hopingso that well get out of bed in themorning.

    Julia nods, and smiles slightly.

    EXT. HIGHWAY DAY

Henry wakes up. His eyes are bloodshot from lack of sleep, and he rolls over and stretches. Yawning, he sits up.

And thats when he realizes that hes on a highway during theapocalypse.

He hoists his backpack onto his shoulders, and rolls up thesleeping bag. Throwing down his backpack again, Henry zipsopen the largest zipper and shoves the sleeping bag inmessily. Zipping it back up, Henry looks out across the road

    with uncertainty.

He sees nobody but a few birds sailing in the morning breeze.

Henry begins to walk. He drinks another sip of water, andrealizes that its almost all gone.

He puts down his backpack, and rummages through it. Pulls outsnacks, his sleeping bag, the note, but no water bottles. Heshakes out his backpack, but nothing resembling a waterbottle emerges.

Henry sighs, and begins to pack up his backpack again. Thelast thing he puts in is the note. He looks at it, his facesaddened by the contents. He folds it up carefully, and putsit back into the backpack.

Looking at the next exit sign, Henry decides to leave thehighway in search of water.

    EXT. STRIP MALL DAY

Henry arrives at a small, abandoned strip mall. The storesare all boarded up or broken into. The parking lot is almostempty, save for an old, rusty car. Henry walks by it, andbrushes his hand up against the old and destroyed metal.

Henry walks towards the entrance to a supermarket. He triesto open the door, but its boarded shut. Henry notices, however, that a window into the mall is broken.

Henry throws his backpack through and listens to it hit thefloor. Henry then hoists himself up onto the broken window, and slides down.

    INT. MALL DAY

His arm catches on the glass, and it makes a three-inch cuton his forearm. This causes Henry to lose his fallingbalance, and hit the floor at an awkward position. He grunts, but manages to stand up okay. He holds his bleeding forearmcarefully, and picks up his backpack.

Henry walks down the empty hallway of the mall. The lightsare not on, so the only light is shining through the windowsfrom outside. Henry checks his forearm while walking, andbumps into something.

He looks down, and sees a dead mans body slumped against the

wall. Henry stumbles backwards, and trips over a grilldisplay. The clattering of metal creates a racket, and Henryworks quickly to settle it down.

Henry continues on his way, his forehead beginning to sweatslightly. He walks into the supermarket.

    INT. SUPERMARKET DAY

The shelves have been looted except for a stray box ofcereal. Henry walks towards the sign that says bottled

    water.

Henry reaches the aisle, and sighs in relief when he seesthree stray water bottles sitting in the aisle. He half-runsover towards them. He picks them up, looks around, and putsthem into his backpack.

    INT. STRIP MALL DAY

He throws his backpack up and over, and climbs back over thewindow without any further injuries.

    EXT. STRIP MALL DAY

Henry picks up his backpack, and begins to walk again. Hereaches the end of the strip mall, where all the carts arelocated. He rounds the corner, and sees someone pushing oneof the carts back into place.

Henry stops in his tracks, nervous and shocked. The man,

BLINK, turns around. He is in his twenties, but has a nervouslook about him that makes him look much older.

BLINKNobody ever bothers to use a cartanymore!

    HENRYSorry?

BLINKThey just come, and grab as much as

Henry stands in front of Blink, perplexed.

BLINK (CONTD)Jesus, where are my manners. ImWilliam, but everyone calls me

    Blink. See here?

He holds up his name tag. Henry does not move closer to lookat it. He remains weary of Blink.

BLINK (CONTD)So where you headed in thiswonderful new world of ours?

    HENRYWillowscroft.

    BLINK

Blinks laughter in reaction to that statement is wheezy andraspy. He laughs like he hasnt laughed in a very long time.

BLINKCome on kid, it took at least a fewdays!

HENRYI was sick. I remember waking up,and there were people on my streetand they shot someone.

BLINKThats more like it. Isnt itamazing? We had all those radicalssaying that our country was goingto split eventually.

    BLINK (CONTD)

Shit, kid, its bandits. Get yourhead down. We need to get to theside of the highway.

Blink pushes Henry's head down and they crouch on the side ofthe highway.

BLINK (CONTD)Were gonna stay here for thenight. Cant risk going anyfurther.

    Henry nods.

HENRYDo you want my sleeping bag? Youprobably havent slept on somethingcomfortable in a while.

When his hand does not make contact with any plastic, Henryseyes open slightly more. He stands up, and turns around. Hisbackpack is nowhere to be seen, and neither is Blink.

    HENRY(under his breath)

    Are you kidding me?

Henry groans, and rolls up his sleeping bag. He picks it upunder his arm, and continues walking along the highway. Heknows that he cannot go back to the old supermarket, sincethe water is already taken and Blink might be there.

Henry walks up to the abandoned supermarket.

He looks around the corners to make sure there are no Blink-like characters, and then walks up to the door. This one isnot boarded shut, so Henry pushes it open and walks inside.

Henry walks up and down the aisles, grabbing boxes of cereal, granola bars, and anything that wasnt perishable. He reachesthe final aisle, and sees one package of twelve water bottles

    sitting on the shelf.

    HENRY(quietly)

    Oh thank god.

Henry walks over, slower this time than before. He picks upthe package, and drops a box of cereal in the process. Helooks around, and realizes that he is going to need somethingto carry all of his food.

He leaves all of his newly acquired products behind, and

moves towards the checkout counters. He grabs three plasticbags, and walks back to his food and water.

He manages to package all of it, but one of the bags rips anda box of granola bars and water bottles fall out onto thefloor. Henry sighs, and goes to grab three more bags.

He double-bags all of his food and water, and walks out ofthe supermarket unscathed.

    EXT. JUNCTION DAY

Off in the distance, Henry spies a split in the road. Henrytries to see if there is a sign, but he is too far away. Helooks behind him to check that nobody has been following him,and walks up to the fork in the road.

The sign that would have shown where the fork leads was

    laying on the ground.

A vandal had knocked it down, and spray pained the whole signsilver. In black, thick letters, the vandal had wroteLiberty is dead. Long live freedom!

Henry touches the sign. He looks up, and tries to examine thetwo roads that lead to completely different places. However,Henry cannot decide which way leads to Willowscroft.

After a moment of hesitation, Henry begins to walk down theleft road, which leads to nowhere in the distance. As he is

Wilhelm is sitting in a rocking chair, with a book resting inhis lap. He is slightly balding, and is chewing tobacco. Hiswife is knitting something that is in too early a stage todiscern.

Henry walks up to the stand, and Wilhelm looks up from hisbook.

    WILHELMWhatre you doing here?

    bars, chips, and other snacks.

Wilhelm pulls out a chair for Henry, and motions for him tosit down. Henry puts down his bags and sits on the chairacross from Henry.

Mary prepares a glass of water for him, and sets it down onthe table. She then pulls out a chair of her own, and theyall sit.

    EXT. JUNCTION MORNING

It has turned to dawn when Henry finally reaches the junctionwhere he took a wrong turn. As he is walking, about half amile away, Henry hears something. A shout.

    He stops.

Peering off into the distance, Henry sees something lying onthe side of the road. It is a truck. A few very small figuresare standing by the back of the truck. One hands a box to theother, and they put it on the ground.

Henry runs to the side of the road, and jumps over thehighway barrier. He begins to walk quietly toward thefigures, even though he knows that it is not a good idea. Heputs his bags down, and creeps closer.

When Henry is close enough, he is able to hear what the menare saying. The man unloading the truck, JERRY, says:

JERRYDamn, man. These guns are going tocome in handy.

The one he is handing the boxes to, CRAIG, says:

CRAIGHey Jerry! Who do you thinks gonnawanna buy em?

JERRYI dunno Craig. Hopefully someonewith a lot of money.

    28.

CRAIGNo shit itll be someone with a lotof money. The rebellion is going towant these.

The driver of the car that Craig is loading the boxes into,

SCOTT, looks back from the drivers seat.

SCOTTDoesnt they have enough gunsalready, guys?

JERRYShut up. They always need moreguns.

CRAIGI feel like in all those movies

about the end of the world, everyone didnt have enough guns.

JERRYPeople have guns, Craig. But theyalways want more. Gives them peaceat mind.

CRAIGHowd we know that this guy hadguns, anyway.

JERRYI knew him before the collapse. Hewas one of those guys that said ohwhen the world ends, Im going tohave enough guns to kill an army.

SCOTTYeh, but how did you know that hewas going to be driving here?

JERRYCall it a lucky guess if you want,Scott. Im not giving away where Iget my information.

Craig throws the last box into the car, and slams the trunkshut. He hits the roof of the car, and Jerry hops out of theback of the overturned truck.

    29.

  • 7/30/2019 The Miles to Come

    30/95

CRAIGThats the last of them. Lets getgoing.

Everyone piles into the car, and Scott starts the engine. They drive down the junction, and are out of sight. Henry

moves closer, and notices a pistol lying on the ground.

Looking down the road to make sure that they are not turningback, Henry jumps the barrier, and runs towards the gun. Hepicks it up, and tries to figure out the clip.

He fumbles with the clip, and tries to figure out how todisassemble the gun. He continues to fumble with it in themiddle of the road.

While he is all caught up with the gun, he doesnt notice thedistant rumble of a car. Henry finally looks up when he hears

    a voice say:

JERRYShit, hes got one of our guns!

CRAIGHow did we leave that behind?

They hop out of the car, and each of them takes a gun from aholster. Craig, however, does not.

    CRAIG (CONTD)

    Kids got my gun!

Jerry walks towards Henry with the gun pointed directly atHenrys chest.

    JERRYDrop the gun, kid.

Henry looks at the gun, and points it at Jerry.

    HENRYWhat if I dont?

CRAIGDo you even know how to shoot thatthing, kid?

HENRYI know enough to aim and pull thetrigger.

    30.

  • 7/30/2019 The Miles to Come

    31/95

JERRYIf you let it go, nobody gets hurt.

    HENRYYoure selling guns, though.

JERRYWe only do that for the money, kid.

HENRYBut what good is that money goingto do for you? Theres no currencyanymore!

JERRYThere isnt, but there will besoon!

    HENRYWhat?

Due to impatience, Jerry fires. It hits the road behindHenry, and Henry pulls the trigger on the gun. A bullet comesout, but it misses Jerry and brushes Craig in the shoulder.

    CRAIG(in pain)

    God damn it!

Craig falls to the ground in pain, and holds his shoulder.

Jerry looks over at Craig long enough that Henry begins torun towards the barrier, and the woods behind him.

Jerry sees this, and begins to shoot.

    The bullets miss Henry.

Henry jumps the barrier, grabs his bags, and tears off intothe woods.

    EXT. WOODS MORNING

JERRY (O.S.)We cant let him get away! What ifhe tells someone?

Henry continues to run. He begins running parallel to theroad in hopes of getting far enough away and not beingtracked.

    JULIEDo we have ammunition?

Michael slides off the bed, and walks over to the closet. Hepulls down a box with three pistols and several clips ofammunition.

He closes the lid of the box, and puts it back on the closet. He turns to face Julie, who is still sitting on the bed.

    MICHAELYeah. Yeah we have enough.

JULIEI guess its just waiting now, isnt it?

    MICHAELI guess it is.

    EXT. WOODS NIGHT

Henrys brow is incredibly sweaty. He is out of breath, andhas a stabbing pain in his side. He stops, somewhere deep inthe woods off of the highway. The bandits have stoppedchasing him, and Henry thinks that he is hidden enough tosleep.

He reaches into his bag, and pulls out a sleeping bag. Herolls it onto the dirty forest bed. He lies down, hisbreathing ragged.

He closes his eyes, but they snap back open. A twig hassnapped somewhere near. He sits up, but nothing happens.

Henry lies back down, and closes his eyes, and falls asleep.

    EXT. WOODS MORNING

Henry wakes up. The first thing his eyes rest upon is thegun, still firmly held in his right hand. He yawns, and sitsup.

The birds are chirping, and faint rays of sunlight reflectthrough the canopy.

Everything seems to be in order for Henry. He checks hisbags, and looks around to make sure that there is nobodycoming after him. When this is finished, he stands up, andstretches.

Henry picks up his bags, scratches his head, and begins towalk in the direction of the highway.

    EXT. HIGHWAY MORNING

Henry emerges onto the highway. It is a bright, sunny day, with the sun resting gently in the sky. Henry looks to theright, where he encountered the bandits, but it is too faroff to see if anything else has happened.

Henry then looks to the right, to try to see if Wilhelm andMary are still sitting on the front porch of their shack. Hecannot see them either.

After a moment of consideration and examination, Henry

decides that his better choice would be to continue down thewrong road, and try to find an alternate route, since he wasa person of interest for the bandits.

Henry begins to walk down the highway.

JULIEI guess we should get going.

    MICHAEL(looking around)

We dont really have a lot to pack,do we?

    EXT. GAS STATION DAY

Henry arrives at the same shack that he came across earlier. As he is walking closer, he sees that Wilhelm and Mary arestill sitting on the front porch. Henry is relieved to seethem.

But, as he walks closer, something seems to be off.

Marys needles are not moving in the solid, rhythmic movementthat they were before. And the book that Wilhelm was readingis now sitting on his lap.

As Henry moves closer, he begins to realize that there issomething off with their physical appearance, too.

    36.

  • 7/30/2019 The Miles to Come

    37/95

Their eyes are open. And Mary has a small amount of bloodrunning from her mouth.

Henrys face turns pale. He looks in horror as he realizesthat the couple is dead. Walking closer, Henry coughs andholds his nose as the stench begins to reach his nostrils.

When Henry gets close enough, he sees two almost identicalpools of blood forming around the couples feet. Wilhelm hasa bullet hole in his chest, right below his heart. Mary hasone on the side of her head.

Henry looks around, and realizes that there was a struggle. There is blood near the gas station, and the streaked bloodmarks helps Henry conclude that they were dragged and proppedup onto their seats.

Henry sighs. He does not bother looting the shack, since it

is obvious that there is no use. Instead, he closes Wilhelmand Marys eyes, and walks away from the gas station.

    EXT. HIGHWAY DAY

As he is walking down the highway, a single tear falls downhis face. He leaves the couple behind for the rest of time, and continues to go on his way.

    INT. BEDROOM DAY

Julie and Michael each have a backpack filled with theirbelongings. Michael has a coat on. He opens up the coat toreveal a holster, and tucks a gun into the holster. The boxcontaining the other gun is put into one of the backpacks.

Henry arrives in Greenfield. At first, the small town looksnormal. But as Henry begins to walk through the town, thestreets are emptier than usual.

There arent any abandoned cars in the road, and the windowsare not broken and the houses are not destroyed. Henrynotices this, and becomes puzzled.

It seems like nobody ever lived in Greenfield.

Henry continues walking. As he progresses through the town,he becomes more and more discouraged. What happened to awhole towns population.

    EXT. RICHARDS HOUSE DAY

Henry comes across a small house. It is a cottage style, witha big front lawn. The thing that piques Henrys interest isthat the lawn is neatly kept. There are blooming flowers, andthe grass is a surprising shade of green compared to thebrown of the rest of the world.

Henry looks at the house for a moment. As he is about to moveon, an old man comes out of the front door. Henry isstartled, and ducks slightly out of reflex.

RICHARD, the old man, looks at Henry and squints. He takes

glasses out of his pocket, and puts them on. When he seesHenry clearly, he smiles broadly.

    RICHARDWell dont just stand there!

Richard beckons Henry to come inside his house.

    RICHARD (CONTD)Come on in!

    Henry hesitates.

Henry walks into Richards house uneasily. The entrance isbright and warm, and there are freshly picked flowers sittingin a vase on a table in the hallway. Richard closes the doorbehind him, and locks it.

Richard has poor posture, and walks slowly but sure-footed.On the wall is a picture of a brown haired, middle age womansmiling warmly at the camera taking the picture.

As Richard walks by it, his hand seems to instinctively touchthe womans face.

RICHARDCome sit in the kitchen. Ill getyou a bottle of water.

Henry lets Richard take the lead, and follows him slowly intoRichards brightly lit kitchen. The kitchen, like the rest ofRichards house, is immaculate. Henry sits down at a smallround table, while Richard pours Henry a glass of water.

    RICHARD (CONTD)(while pouring water)

Everything has changed since theUnited States fell. But I try andkeep my spirits high, my houseclean, and my garden trimmed.

Richard sets the glass of water down, and sits across thetable from Henry. As he sits, he lets out a sigh that makesit seem like some great weight has been lifted.

RICHARD (CONTD)You know what happened, of course?

    HENRYNot too much, no.

    HENRYHow did we collapse?

RICHARDWell, thats pretty simple. Neitherof the countries could handle tradeor diplomacy on their own, so abunch of radicals took the chanceto--

Richard holds his hands in the air, and makes the air quotessign with his fingers.

The paper reads: America is going to be what it used to be.Our new president has issued that electricity and water be

Henry walks closer. His newfound worry for being caught comesinto effect, and he looks at the woman suspiciously. When he

is close, she hears his footsteps.

The woman, REBECCA, looks up at Henry. Her eyes are red andher cheeks tear stained. She is middle aged, and is wearing adirty cardigan and dirty jeans. Her black hair is tousled andlooks like it hasnt been washed in a long time.

Henry reaches the end of what is left, and walks to the otheraisle.

    HENRYI couldnt find anything.

Rebecca leans over and hugs Henry. Henry is surprised, asthis is the first physical contact hes had with a person ina very long time. After a moment, he hugs her back. Shesniffs.

    INT. ROOM

Julie finds herself in a grey cement room. There are nowindows, and the only light source is a single bulb hangingfrom the ceiling by a wire. She sits on a wooden chair withher hands tied up with rope. She struggles to get loose, butto no avail.

The single door in the room opens. A man, PATRICK, walks in.He sits down across from Julie.

Henry arrives at one house that does not seem to be affectedby the destruction. It is a small cottage, like Richardshouse, but the grass is all but dead. The paint on the houseis peeling, and half of the windows are broken.

On the front porch, in a T-shirt and shorts that are toosmall for him, sits PHILIP. Philip is holding a shotgun. Heis around five feet tall, and probably around age 12.

Philip sees Henry walk by, and holds up his shotgun from hisseat.
