ObjectivesObjectives The students will come up with a

solution to the problem and will demonstrate an understanding of medieval history, specifically the duties and responsibilities of a knight during the crusades.

The students will be able to recognize the importance and symbolism of a knight’s crest by creating their own crest using Early Medieval and Romanesque artwork as inspiration. TEKS 113.33b, 113.33c1, 113.33c3A, 117.53c3 &

DirectorDirector This person will be responsible for making sure all

necessary aspects of the assignment are being accomplished. At the beginning of each class, every group will have two to three minutes to determine what everyone will be doing that day; the director must make sure that everyone has tasks that will keep them busy for the duration of the class. He or she will work closely with both the set designer and the primary editor of the script; once the set design and script are complete, he or she must make sure that video footage is being compiled, and – while the video is being shot – he or she must communicate with the video editor to make sure that all needed shots are being taken. Lastly, he or she must create titling screens for the final video; in order to make sure the screens are created consistently, he or she must communicate with the other group members that are also creating titling screens.

ScriptwriterScriptwriter While all group members will eventually edit the

storyboard and script, this group member will create the original manuscript. He or she must research the topic in order to insure historical accuracy, and – at the end of each day – he or she must make a copy of their work so that each group member has a copy. The scriptwriter must time the script and make sure that it meets time requirements; for this, he must work closely with the video editor and director, just in case certain video shots will consume considerable amounts of time. Set DesignersSet Designers The set designers will be responsible for

creating all props for the video. They must work closely with the video editor and the scriptwriter to make sure all the needed props are being created, and that the props are created according to plan. If materials are needed, they must communicate with both the teacher and the group to make sure that they have all said materials. Lastly, they must create titling screens for the final video; in order to make sure the screens are created consistently, they must communicate with the other group members that are also creating titling screens.

Video EditorVideo Editor Prior to the video editing portion of the

project, the video editor’s main responsibility will be creating the storyboard. He or she will be working closely with the scriptwriter in class, and he or she will draw images depicting what he intends the video will look like; the video editor must include short descriptions with each image. At the end of each class, the video editor will make a copy of their work so that each group member has a copy. Lastly, the video editor will compile all of the video footage and edit it as necessary. He or she is not responsible of for titling screens. Instead, titling will be divided equally among the other members of the group.

The year is 1216, and you have been forced to flee your home by marauding vandals. You and your family must choose an ideal place to live, and – since you are already 26 – you must choose wisely, because if you are forced to move again, your “old age” may prevent you from completing the move.

Fill in the Access Database by ordering the main reasons you would choose each location on your list – Reason #1 is the most desirable reason, while Reason #6 is the least desirable reason. In the “Why Live There” section, explain the pros and cons of each reason in paragraph form.

Lastly, using the “Query” feature of the database, select the most desirable place for you to live, based on everything you learned during this assignment. You must be prepared to present your choice to the class, and you will be expected to explain your reasons to the class in detail. Visuals must be used, as described in the rubric.

Crest MindtoolCrest Mindtool You must design a crest for your knight.

Research Early Medieval and Romanesque art work to get ideas. Use the Internet and books to look for examples of different crests used by the knights in the Middle Ages. Input the crests into the Crests of Medieval Knights database. Include what you believe the imagery represents and why. Once everything is entered run a query to find shields with imagery that represents what you want to base your shield design on. (Ex: Strength)
