Continuing a Shakespeare strand in this season, ComposerThomas Adès conducts the Metropolitan Opera premiere of hisown work, with the great baritone Simon Keenlyside starring asProspero. Director Robert Lepage recreates the interior of 18th-century La Scala in this hugely inventive and stylish staging.

LA CLEMENZA DI TITO

Back in the Met after her huge triumph as Carmen in 2010, thespectacular Latvian mezzo soprano Elina Garanca sings Sesto inMozart’s drama set in ancient Rome. Giuseppe Filianoti is thenoble Tito and Barbara Frittoli is Vitellia, in this handsome revivalof one of the composer’s final masterpieces. Harry Bicket conducts.

UN BALLO IN MASCHERA

Director David Alden’s dreamlike setting provides a compellingbackdrop for this dramatic story of jealousy and vengeance. MarceloÁlvarez stars as the conflicted king; Karita Mattila is Amelia, the object of his secret passion; and Dmitri Hvorostovsky is hersuspicious husband. Kathleen Kim is the page Oscar, and StephanieBlythe sings the role of the fortune-teller Ulrica. Fabio Luisi conducts.

La Bayadère (the Temple Dancer) is an exotic story of love andintrigue in India. Nikiya, a young temple dancer, swears her love to ayoung warrior. The High Brahmin wants Nikiya for himself and tellsthe all-powerful Rajah (who had decided that the warrior wouldmarry his own daughter), and the Rajah makes a deadly intervention.

One of the most charming and amusing of all 19th century romanticRussian ballets. Don Quixote tells the famous tale of the romantic,shortsighted and eccentric old man determined to revive chivlarlyon an adventurous quest. THE RITE OF SPRING

Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring is widely loved as one of thegreatest pieces of music of the 20th century. The savage beauty of the music, the depiction of pagan fertility rituals and humansacrifice caused riots at the Ballet’s premiere in Paris in 1913. Thisperformance commemorates the 100th anniversary of its premiere.

ROMEO & JULIET

Prokofiev’s great ballet based on Shakespeare’s timeless love storyof two young lovers from feuding families is one of the mostpopular ballets in the world. In his new (2010) Bolshoi choreography,the character of Juliet has been developed by the great YuriGrigorovitch from his personal memories of Natalia Bessmertnova– his first Juliet, and main inspiration.

In an immensely colourful all-Russian programme, soloists LubaOrgonasova, (soprano) Mikhail Petrenko (bass) and Dmitry Popov,(tenor) are joined by the Berlin Radio choir under Simon Halsey forRachmaninov’s great choral work, The Bells. Stravinsky’s astonishing and electrifying Rite of Spring is preceded by his rarely heard Le Roides Étoiles – a 5 minute gem for huge orchestra. Principal conductor,the charismatic Sir Simon Rattle conducts the BPO.

Mozart Symphony No. 33 in B flat major, K. 319Wagner Overture to ‘Tannhauser’ Shostakovich Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 54

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is centre stage in this eclecticprogramme under the sensational young Latvian conductor AndrisNelsons. Mozart’s youthful and joyful Symphony No. 33 is followed by one of the most imposing Wagner Overtures. The concert finisheswith Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony – a work that was originallyplanned as a grand statement in homage to Lenin, but was eventuallycompleted as a much more personal musical statement.

Mendelssohn Incidental music to ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’, Op. 61 (excerpts)

Berlioz Sinfonie Fantastique, Op. 14

The legendary Claudio Abbado returns to conduct in two remarkableworks. The Ladies of the Bayerischen Rundfunks choirs join theorchestra for the refined gossamer-light magic of Mendelssohn’s Musicfor A Midsummer Night’s Dream. After the interval, the Orchestradelivers one of the greatest and most colourful of all romantic‘programme’ symphonies, Berlioz’s ever popular SymphonieFantastique – a dramatised depiction of his own obsessive love for the Irish actress Harriet Smithson.

Thisperformance commemorates the 100th anniversary of its premiere.

Prokofiev’s great ballet based on Shakespeare’s timeless love storyof two young lovers from feuding families is one of the mostpopular ballets in the world. Stravinsky’s astonishing and electrifying Rite of Spring is preceded by his rarely heard Le Roides Étoiles – a 5 minute gem for huge orchestra. Principal conductor,the charismatic Sir Simon Rattle conducts the BPO.

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is centre stage in this eclecticprogramme under the sensational young Latvian conductor AndrisNelsons. Mozart’s youthful and joyful Symphony No. 33 is followed by one of the most imposing Wagner Overtures. The concert finisheswith Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony – a work that was originallyplanned as a grand statement in homage to Lenin, but was eventuallycompleted as a much more personal musical statement.

The legendary Claudio Abbado returns to conduct in two remarkableworks. The Ladies of the Bayerischen Rundfunks choirs join theorchestra for the refined gossamer-light magic of Mendelssohn’s Musicfor A Midsummer Night’s Dream. After the interval, the Orchestradelivers one of the greatest and most colourful of all romantic‘programme’ symphonies, Berlioz’s ever popular SymphonieFantastique – a dramatised depiction of his own obsessive love for the Irish actress Harriet Smithson.
