FROM THE PASTOR

Page 2 Email: [email protected]

We’re in the season of Epiphany. The beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday, doesn’t take place until March 1. Therefore we have seven weeks of Epiphany this year. The readings we hear in church are stories of people becoming aware that Jesus is God’s Son walking on earth. They are “ah ha” moments in the face of the living God. Henri Nouwen talks about how noise and busy-ness is one of our greatest detractors from coming face to face with God. We may long for quiet and solitude, but once we try it, we get scared. We hear our own thoughts and ‘inner chaos’ coming to the fore-

front of our minds. To have solitude is not at first a normal response to our busy and preoccupied lives. As we turn our eyes towards Lent, perhaps we use Epiphany to begin preparing our hearts. As Nouwen would say, ‘Discipline is the other side of discipleship. A spiritual discipline, therefore is the concentrated effort to create some inner and outer space in our lives, where this obedience can be practiced. Through a spiritual discipline we prevent the world from filling our lives to such an extent that there is no place left to listen. A spiritual discipline sets us free to pray or, to say it better, allows the Spirit of God to pray in us.’ (Making All Things New; An Invitation to the Spiritual Life. Harper One. 1981. This excerpt from Devotional Classics. Richard Foster and James Bryan Smith. Harper San Francisco. 2005. Pg. 80-83.) First we write down a time we’d like to meet God in quiet; put it in our planners. If we can only stand 5 or 10 minutes a day, then commit to that amount. We still our minds. If random thoughts about the grocery list or the next golf game come, we write it down or gently let it float away. Perhaps we use a scripture verse such as ‘The Lord is my shepherd’ to focus our thoughts. Repeat it over and over. Or pray, ‘Come, Holy Spirit, come.’ Solitude with God doesn’t feel natural at first when we are so used to being with others, having the noise of the TV, or rushing off to our next meeting. But it is a beginning. Trust that God is with us even if we cannot ‘feel’ anything happening. The first objective is simply to open our hearts and minds to listen for God in the quiet. We will begin to yearn for these quiet, undistracted moments with the Lord. And we will become more aware of God, who can speak when we are listening. May God bless our coming to be in God’s presence and grant us small epiphanies along the way. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:6)

Walking it with you, Pastor Ruth Ann

Dinners48 is going to take the spring session off in 2017. I hope to jump start the group dinners again this fall. We need to rethink how we can get more people involved and how we can improve on format, timing of the dinners, and other suggestions. Besides, I need a break! It’s been almost twenty years of doing menus and groups! I would like to find out if this type of fellowship is something that KOG members want to continue. I welcome any suggestions and/or comments. Please contact me via my home phone, 970-667-8785 or email [email protected]. Best wishes for this upcoming spring! Sarajane Grandia

Did you attend Lutheran Campus Ministry? 2017 is the 50th anniversary of the ministry. They could use some help in organizing and putting on activities around that. Second, they need as-sistance in mobilizing alumni to support the ministry. People with gifts in those areas would be a real blessing. If you have questions, comments, or ideas, please call Newton Seitzinger (970) 214-4384 (cell) or talk to Pastor Ruth Ann.

Our theme is intended to highlight the 500th com-memoration of the Reformation while also reminding us that the church is a place where we are formed (and re-formed) in faith, both as individuals, and as a com-munity of disciples. We will not only highlight the her-itage by which our Lutheran perspective on the gospel has been shaped, but also focus on our commitment to church unity, especially with the Roman Catholic branch of the Christian family. Finally, we will explore what our Lutheran contribution to the life of the whole Body of Christ might be in this new century. Re-Formation Events: Lutheran-Roman Catholic
