Update on Natural Church Development (NCD)

for Bethel UMC

In 2013, the NCD Health Team began its second round of working with the Planning

Guide for Vital Congregations that was distributed to each church in the SC Annual

Conference in the fall of 2012. Our mission statement for this experience is: "Using the

Vital Congregation Planning Guide, the Bethel UMC NCD Health Team will help

Bethel and its members to set and meet needed goals to become a more effective and

vital congregation for the Kingdom of God."

Our team recently completed the process of setting

our 2013-2014 goals in the following areas:

Disciples worship – action plans for inspiring worship

2013-2014 Goals

Proposed new order of worship

Chiming of the Hour (Todd moves to lectern)

Welcome and Announcements (1 minute of fellowship followed by chiming of

bells and announcement by Todd “Let us prepare our hearts for worship”)

Prelude (Acolyte enters and lights candles)

Choral Call to Worship (All stand)

Rest of service as usual

Ask the Christian Education and Family Ministries team to set goals which will help

to ensure that children and youth participate in worship in some way at least

once a quarter. Michelle Keiffer would be responsible for relaying this goal to

that team.

Ask the Choir Director to move the choir up front and use the piano at least once a

month in worship and continue to sing familiar hymns. Todd would be respon-

sible for talking with the Choir Director about this goal.

What a Season of Knowing, Loving and Serving!!!

On Saturday, November 16th, Bethel’s Pool Activity Building was filled with the holiday spirit as we hosted “Make A Difference Day” which brought together several ministry groups, every age group, members and visitors to work on a common goal of Making A Difference! The day included making homemade cards for our military troops, stuffing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child and a screening of the new Christmas VeggieTales Movie, “Merry Larry and the True Light of Christmas”. We also enjoyed hot dogs with the fix-ins, fresh popped popcorn & s’mores!

By the Numbers:

Over 80 Handmade Cards were sent to our Military!

Forty children (22 girls & 18 boys) received shoeboxes that were prepared on Bethel’s Cam-pus!

Bethel’s Youth had a full night of Midnight Madness on Saturday, December 14th! The evening started with the youth decorating the Youth room - complete with personalized stockings & a Christmas tree. Festivities continued as we loaded up and went to help a member with her Christmas decorations and had dinner at Panchos, topped off with a trivia contest and the ‘bag o prizes’! Upon return to the church, games galore, cookie baking, glow-in-the-dark hide & seek and a money-less gift exchange ensued. If you haven’t had a chance to check out pictures from the night, they are posted outside of the elevator in the Education Building and in the Youth Zone.

On Sunday, December 15th, Children and Youth enjoyed Sundae Sunday in recognition of their hard work in Sunday School during the fall quarter! Pastor Todd & Miss Cara scooped up ice cream and the kids were able to pile high with toppings of their choice.

Bethel’s Children’s & Youth Sunday School classes did an outstanding job of collecting money for their Fall mission organization - Heifer International! As students learned about the Heifer organization throughout the quarter, a total of $84.87 was collected during Sunday School offerings. The students voted to use the money to purchase four flocks of chicks for a family in need. Please join us in praying for the families that receive these gifts. The kids enjoyed this mission focus so much that we will continue learning about and supporting Heifer into the Spring.

On Sunday, December 22nd, Bethel’s Youth had an outing to Saluda Shoals’ Christmas Light Display! We enjoyed Starbucks on the drive over … witnessed magical light displays …enjoyed songs, jokes, bucket lists and more … and finished the night off with ice cream! We can’t wait to do it again next year!

YOUTH! Make plans to join us on Friday, January 10th for an outing to HiWire Trampoline Park! Cost is $12 and must be turned in to the church office by January 3rd so that we can reserve our jump time. *Money isn’t a reason to not come … call Michelle!* More information and a sign-up sheet are on the board in the Youth Zone!

Natural Church Development Update continued . . . .

For Contemporary Worship - In recent years, BUMC has only grown minimally and many of our new members

are from other churches. We, as a church should be reaching out even more than we already do to the

unchurched and unsaved as commanded by Jesus in Matthew. Studies have shown that those churches

offering a contemporary service are attracting many who have an interest in attending a contemporary

service rather than traditional services. The goal and benefits of our new Contemporary worship service

(started 11-3-13) are three-fold: we will be reaching those otherwise unreached, providing a service to

those who prefer a contemporary service, and we will be growing as a church.

Disciples make new disciples – action plans for Evangelism, sharing the Good news to those who do

not have a church home

2013-2014 Goals

Place 4 small yard signs around Bethel’s campus that say, “Welcome to Bethel UMC! So glad you are here!

Check us out at www.bethelmethodistcolumbia.com. Linda Stewart isresponsible for implementing this

goal. Cost per sign is $42 and we asked each adult SS class to underwrite cost of one sign.

Ask the Evangelism team to come up with a comprehensive program for our members to gain confidence in

witnessing and sharing their faith. This program will call and equip each member (including children and

youth) for a renewed practice of inviting friends, neighbors, and colleagues to worship. It may include

asking Bethel’s members to invite one person to worship or other event each week! It may include faith-

sharing training, giving participants a short speech or guidelines on offering an invitation – (Sharing the

Faith as a Spiritual Practice – Debbie Carter flyer, Faith Sharing New Testament). Todd will follow up

with Evangelism team concerning this goal.

Disciples engage in growing as a disciple (Opportunities for spiritual growth in small groups, Sunday school

classes and Bible studies for all ages)

2013-2014 Goal

Start a Prayer Group for specific events, or for the overall vitality of the church, inviting volunteers to sign

up for a time to pray for the church, or an event around the clock. Kimberly Wilson will speak to Su-

zette Wilson and Caroline Funderburk about moving forward with their idea to have a weekly prayer

group on campus to pray for our physical campus, for worship, and for the ministries of our church.

Disciples engage in mission (People from the congregation engaged in local, national and international mis-

sion/outreach activities of justice and mercy ministry)

2013-2014 Goal

Start a “Mission Possible” small group who reaches out to the community to meet different needs (hands-on

needs). Ideas include visiting nursing homes, a knitting group, a sewing group, a collecting of food and

distribution group, a group that saves up quarters and takes them to a Laundromat with cards identifying

Bethel UMC. The Bethel Outreach Ministry team is responsible for recruiting, guiding Coordinators of

this new small group and its participants.

Natural Church Development Update continued . . . .

Disciples give to mission (Stewardship – education and opportunity for support of benevolent and charitable

ministries - this includes apportionments paid and support for all United Methodist and non-United Methodist

organizations active in work such as advocacy, education, health, justice, mercy, outreach, and welfare anywhere

in the world)

2013-2014 Goals

Discuss Special Offerings as a Church Council so that as the calendar is planned for the year, all ministry

teams are agreeing on and supporting special offerings. Janel Bell, Church Council Secretary has added

this item to the Church Council agenda.

Have Kimberly Wilson and Stewardship Ministry team celebrate and encourage continued faithfulness in charita-

ble giving through a Messenger article and Stewardship .

Moment in worship that highlights Bethel’s benevolent giving for 2013. For example, Bethel gave $$$ for

2014 to XXX ministries, and share testimonial on how money was used specifically in some cases.

Lay Leadership (What will you do to develop laity to be effective spiritual/administrative leaders?)

2013-2014 Goal

In December 2013, each ministry chair will contact their team members for the coming year (2014), to thank

them for serving and include committee guidelines and required meeting dates. Todd is responsible for

emailing each chair concerning this. Also, Todd will hold a training with each ministry team as they

begin their work for 2014 as needed.

Clergy Leadership (What will you do to support and encourage your pastor to be an effective spiritual lead-

er? What will you do to help notice, name and nurture others in your congregation who have gifts for ordained

ministry?)

2013-2014 Goal

Todd and Debbie Carter will write up “A Week in the Life of your Pastor” and include the conference vaca-

tion guidelines. This article will be published in the Messenger by the PPRC.

I would like to especially thank each member of the NCD Health Team (Todd Davis, Debbie Carter, Bonnie

Lutz, Mike Hellams, Brenda Harper, Sally Hafner, Janel Bell, Walt Speas, Lisa Wood, Linda Stewart, Bob Way-

son - recently deceased, Kimberly Wilson, Fred Brown, Kate Brown, and Michelle Keiffer for all the time and

effort they have given to this project. Please continue to pray for this team’s wisdom and discernment as they

continue to set and implement goals for the ministry of our church. And please pray that God will lead us and

guide us as HIS CHURCH to do His will. If you would like to become a member of the NCD Health

Team, please contact Rev. Todd Davis at 787-3058 or [email protected].
