The Pastor's Page

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is that time of year when congregations are working on budgets for the next year, creatinga Stewardship program and wondering from where the money for running the church will come. We here at Arndt’s are doing the same thing.

In looking at Stewardship program for us, I have been reading a book entitled, “Not YourParents’ Offering Plate” by J . Clif Christopher. Christopher is a pastor who no longer serves a parish, but is a church fundraiser.

His book shed a new light on several things for me that I will share with you over the courseof time. But this month I want to share a story that he relates in the beginning of the book.He says that he was at a philanthropy meeting where a young attorney was the keynotespeaker. The attorney revealed that he was giving a local youth center $1.5 million. Theattorney’s speech was filled with faith references, and his spiritual convictions were a driving force in his desire to make this huge gift to the youth center.

The author said that he set up a meeting with this attorney who explained to Clif that he waswilling to donate such a large sum of money because as a young boy the youth center hadplayed an important role in his upbringing and also because he had that kind of money now.The lawyer stated that when the director of the youth center said he needed $1.5 million for a new facility, I gave it to him because I knew with the money he could change lives.

Christopher eventually asked this young attorney how involved he was in his church, to whichhe replied that he attended about 48 Sundays a year and gave as good as most. Clif said tohim, would you ever give that same amount of money to the church as you gave to the youthcenter. The attorney’s words were, “ Lord, no, they wouldn’t know what to do with it".

What I believe through reading this is that the attorney was saying the youth center has aplan how to change lives and what to do with that kind of money and although, the church needs money, it does not have a plan.

I think, when we reach out to members,we are asking for their help NOW because we needto make ends meet, not because we have a plan or a mission for the money; and we wonderwhy we are not getting it. I think it is like Clif Christopher says.....this is not your parents’ offering plate anymore.

Think with me about the words from the attorney…..“they wouldn’t know what to do withit….” What kind of vision, plan and mission do we have for the future of Arndt’s? What kind of vision, plan and mission would you like to see for the future of Arndt's?

Working with you on a plan,

Pastor Jean

Worship at Arndt's

Sunday, October 2, 2016 – Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost - Holy CommunionA little faith goes a long way is our Lord's point in the gospel. A mustard seed's-worth has miraculous potential. Thepatience, tenacity, and endurance required for the life of faith are the blessings received in water and the world (hholybaptism), bread and win (holy communion) the word read and proclaimed in this assembly. Anticipate them. Receivethem with thanksgiving.

Sunday, October 9, 2016 - Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost - Service of the WordIt's a miracle! Multiple miracles! The waters of holy baptism have healed us. The body and blood of Jesus in holycommunion have made us clean. We have died with Christ and been raised with him. For all this we have returned to offer thanks. From this place we are sent on our way rejoicing to share the good news.

Sunday, October 16, 2016 - Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost - Holy CommunionPray always. Do not lose heart. This is the encouragement of the Christ of the gospel today. Persistence in our every encounter with the divine will be blessed. Wrestle with the word. Remember your baptism again and again. Comeregularly to Christ's table. Persistence in our every encounter with the divine will be blessed.

Sunday, October 23, 2016 - Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost - Service of the WordGenuine repentance and pretentious piety stand in stark contrast in the gospel and all around us. All creation stands inneed of God's forgiveness. Keep the faith. God's people--"all who have longed for his appearing"--shall be accountedrighteous for Jesus' sake. Our God is merciful to sinners. For all this the assembly glorifies God forever.

Sunday, October 30, 2016 - Reformation Sunday after Pentecost - Holy Communion/Worship and Praise ServiceOn this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ--the good news--that makes us free!We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be oneat the Lord's table.
