Activities and Education
Carolyn’s Corner Book Club
The Book Club is currently reading and will meet and discuss Brooklyn by Colm Toibin on September 7 and 21 at 10 a.m. in the conference room on the second floor. The book club meets on the first and third Thursday of each month and is open to all. The October reading will be The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and will be discussed on October 5 and 19 The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is set in 1939 Nazi Germany and the country is holding its breath. It is a story about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist – books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau. This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul. The writing is elegant, philosophical and moving. Even at its length, it's a work to read slowly and savor.

Nutrition site Greetings! Wow! It is incredible that this month marks the one year anniversary of being in the NEW Senior Center! I remember writing to you last year that the building is just a building and that it is each of YOU, the participants, in harmony with the dedicated staff, who bring life, excitement and vitality to the atmosphere. It is wonderful to see how you have done this over the past year. The participation, growth and excitement in the environment is outstanding and that is thanks to all of you and everyone who has dedicated him and herself to turning the building into a special and inviting place for the Seniors of this community. I am delighted to be part of this with you and am excited to see how the next year goes! Blessings! Emily
