Guest Speaker profile – Dr Sammy
Ramsey
Dr. Samuel Ramsey's enduring interest in entomology started over 20 years
ago and shows no signs of waning. Dr Ramsey completed his PhD in 2018
with Dr. Dennis vanEngelsdorp's lab at the University of Maryland, College
Park. His current work focuses on the effects of honey bee parasites on
individual and colony level survivorship specifically targeting Varroa
destructor and Nosema ceranae. In particular, Dr Ramsey has identified that
varroa mites feed primarily on bees’ “fat bodies”, not their blood.
Dr Ramsey is an engaging speaker and is known in the US as Doctor Buggs for
his Youtube science videos.
Verroa doesn’t feed on hemolymph (blood):

July Checklist
On a fine day (at least 15 degrees and no wind)
check your hives for honey stores. Bring honey closer to the brood if necessary.
Check your hives are ventilated and excess moisture can escape. Make sure there is a small air gap between the top box and the hive mat.
Check your hive location isn’t too shady and damp during the winter months. Consider moving the hives for next season if you can.
Keep checking stored frames for wax moth damage. Store frames in a light airy place to discourage wax moth. (I keep mine in my glasshouse when its not being used during winter)
Look out for the woodworking and wax dipping workshop in July to make new or replacement hiveware – it doesn’t last forever, sadly!

Winter Pollen and Nectar Sources in
Wellington
By Jane Harding
Winter is not a great foraging season for bees, but there is a surprising amount of food still around for bees and in Wellington where we have a relatively benign climate, something is flowering all year round.
In June, July and August a number of native species flower, notably the highly scented kohekohe, native hebe (koromiko) and the puriri. Puriri is a better pollen source than nectar source, as the sugar concentration of the nectar is low. Kowhai also flowers early, particularly the dwarf varieties. Bees harvest the Kowhai nectar towards the end of their flowering when the flowers begin to droop. Five finger (pseudopanax arboreus) is a forest fringe small shrub, absolutely smothered in flowers in very early spring.

For introduced species, tree Lucerne is a fast growing and prolifc flowering shrub that flowers through June and July. Australian wattle varieties are common in Wellington and produce both pollen and nectar for bees. Rhodendrons and camellias are winter to early spring flowering in Wellington and are a good source of nectar for bees.

Chartwell apiary – next field day in
September.
Its cold out there! Too cold for opening the hives most days, so Chartwell
Apiary field days will not be scheduled during June, July, August. We’ll
start our regular apiary days again in September.
John aims to visit the apiary on the next fine day to check on stores, add sugar syrup and fit entrance reducers where necessary and deliver 20 x newly modified nuc boxes for use in the spring.

The Yunnan Cliff Honey Hunters
Here’s a great story from The Guardian newspaper about the honey hunters
of Yunnan in China, who scale cliffs to gather wild honey from the hives of
the nests of the Apis Dorsata, one of the world’s largest honey bees, which
can grow up to 3cm in length.

What’s coming up in August?
The August meeting will be our photo competition and we are lucky to have
Bruce Hutton, who was a forensic photographer with the Police for over 30
years as our judge. Something a bit different for Bruce to look at, maybe…
Also, Trisha and Jane will give a short slideshow on beeswax recovery and
talk you through a straightforward way to end up with beeswax like this:
