But now, a new pizza restaurant enters the ring alongside the other five in North Adams. Pizza Works is owned by Ilyas Ozdemir, who could not be reached at press time, and is sched- uled to open late next week, according to em- ployee Al Kuruca. e North Adams Planning Committee approved Ozdemir’s request to open Pizza Works on Oct. 18. Ransford Properties has owned 315 Ashland St. for the last eight years. During that time the businesses have had mixed success, according to Ransford Properties owner, Charles Rans- ford. e hot dog place had trou- ble competing with Jack’s Hot Dog Stand, and Los Amigos and Pizza King fell behind on rent, employee paychecks, and supplier payments. Additionally, Williamstown- based Mexican restaurant Des- perados will open a new location at 23 Eagle St. in downtown North Adams shortly aſter anksgiv- ing. e location was home to the burger joint e Alley until last spring. Desperados has been owned by head chef Dave Atwell, who could also not be reached at press time, since 1998. In addition to classic Mexican food staples such as bur- ritos and tacos, Atwell has devel- oped his own specials. e drunken shrimp is “Grilled shrimp soaked in our awesome, top shelf margarita. Served over rice & topped with grilled on- ion, red pepper, poblano pepper, cheese & fresh cilantro,” accord- ing to the Desperados menu. Professor Louis Stelling Update By Andrea Whitney Staff Writer As mentioned in a previous is- sue, Louis Stelling, assistant pro- fessor in Modern Languages, was attacked over the summer in Al- bany. He was attacked and mugged by three men on his walk home on June 12. “e youngest was 15 years old and the others were of adult ages,” Stelling said. ey beat him with blunt ob- jects, fracturing his skull three times as well as his leſt collar bone. e men leſt him for dead be- tween 10 p.m. and midnight, and his brain swelled up and bled for hours until he was able to regain consciousness and get to the hos- pital the next morning. “Amazingly, I live on Myrtle Ave. in Albany, where there is also an entrance to the ER at Albany Medical Center,” Stelling said. When he woke up on his street, he was able to walk himself into the ER where doctors had to put him into a coma in order for his brain to heal and respond to the necessary surgery. Stelling was hospitalized at the Albany Medical Center until July 2. He was transferred to Sunny- view Hospital for two weeks of Traumatic Brain Injury erapy once he was out of the coma and was able to react to his surround- ings. Once he was completely out of the hospital, he was sent to the Buffalo area for about two months for Occupational, Physical, and Speech, Language and Cognitive therapy.
