Please see the attached listing of recordings which you have kindly donated to the Mayibuye Centre. At the time of your donation, there was an informal understanding that your material would be made fully available for the use of researchers and scholars. We would now like to formalise that understanding. Attached to this letter is a Donor Agreement Form which you are requested to sign and return to us at your earliest convenience. Please note that if we have not received your response within two months from the date of this letter, we will assume that the informal agreement is still acceptable to you and that no restrictions should be placed on your collection. The Donor Agreement Form is a standard record of agreement used internationally between individuals or organizations donating audio-visual items or collections to an archival institution. Its main purpose is to provide donors the opportunity to apply certain restrictions to the access and/or use of the material they are donating. It also enables scholars and other users of archival collections to make use of the material in a responsible way without fear of infringement of moral or legal rights. Your recordings are an important and valued contribution to the history of South Africa and are often a unique record of personal sacrifice and courage in the liberation of our people. The Mayibuye Centre is extremely grateful to you for entrusting us with the custody and dissemination of these important archival records. Joan Fairweather The Mayibuye Centre.

Dear Joan Fairweather,

I want to do some further work on a number of exiles who I interviewed for THE RIFT. These are women who did not actually appear in the book, because there was not room for them all.I would like Mayibuye to supply me with print-outs .

It is quite a considerable list - about 30 in all, and if you require it, I am prepared to pay for the cost involved.Do you have email? If so, will you let me have the address - to speed things up. Meanwhile you can fax me, and when I hear from you I will send you the list.

Good wishes to Barry - and to yourself

A list o-f names of those interviewed is attached - see Appendix A.

2. "Exiles" have been loosely defined for purposes of these interviews as:

people who left South Africa because of apartheid, with the intention of

returning as soon as condit io ns in the country made it possible for them to

do so. Some have since acquired citizenship in the countries of their

ex i 1 e .

3. The interviews took p lace at varir.n=i t o w n <5 in the following countries:

Britain. Canada. Denmar!- Germany (FRG and GDR) . Holland. Mozanmbique.

Norway. Sweden. T.inrania, U.S.A. Zambia. Zimbabwe. The towns where the

interviews took place as listed in Appendix A are not necessarily where the

4. Only ap proximately half of the original a ud i o-cassette recordings of the

interviews are now still extant. All the interviews, whether audio-cas-

settes are extant or not, have been transcribed ver ba t im onto computer

How do you feel about your experience of exile?

P a g e 1

Page 26: THE MAYIBUYE CENTRE

After Prime Minister De K l e rk 's speech o-f Fe bruary 2nd, 1991 opened the

prospect of a safe return from e::i 1 e , another question was added:

THE SOUTH AFRICAN "EXILES' COLLECTION".

o o o

1. The "Exiles Collection" consists of app ro xi m at el y 325 verbatim

interviews with South A fricans in exile, made between 1989 and 1991. An

unknown number of those interviewed have since returned, temporarily or

permanently, to South Africa.

A list of names of those interviewed is attached -ee Appendix A.

2. "Exiles" have been loosely defined -for purposes of these interviews as:

people who left South Africa b e c a us e of apartheid, with the intention of

returninq as soon as condit i on s in the country made it possible for them to

do so Some have since acquired ci tizenship in the countric^, u t their

ex i 1 e .

3. The interviews took p lace at various twwr.s in the following countries:

Britain. Canada. Denmark Ge^^a ny <FRG and GDR) . Holland. Mozanmbique.

Norway. Sweden. Tanzania. U.S.A. Zambia. Zimbabwe. The towns where the

interviews took place as listed in Appendix A are not ne c essarily where the

person interviewed was resident at the time.

4. Only app ro xi ma te l y half of the original au di o-cassette recordings of the

interviews are now still extant. All the interviews, whether a u d i o - ca s

settes are extant or not, have been transcribed ve rb at i m onto comp te

discs. The collection c om prises fourteen 3 inch d am. and fourteen.

5.25inch diam discs.

5. The tr a nscriptions ar? unedited and uncorrected, and contain the

interventions and p r om pt in gs of the interviewer as well as the responses.

Th^ computer print-out of the entire collection runs to ap^r oximately 6,500

pages of typescript at an average of approximatel; 260 words per page.

6. In g e n e r a l , the following questions were asked of those interviewed,

more by way of p r e m n 4- ’ n~ than interrogation:

What circumst a nc es led you to leave South Africa?

Mow did you leave, and when'’

Mhe.t has happened to you since then?

How do you feel about your experience of exile?

P a g e 1

Page 33: THE MAYIBUYE CENTRE

After Prime Minister De Kle rk 's speech of February 2nd, 1991 opened the

prospect o-f a safe return from exile, another question was added;

What are your feelings about going back?

7. A small number of the i nterviews have been shortened, edited, and

arranged for publication in a book now in the course of production.

Publication is expe^t^d towards the end of 1992, under the provisional

title: "The p’-ft. Thr> South African Exile Experience". Publishers:

Johnathan Cape. The persons whose interviews are concerned are indicai.t=d

with an asterisk on Appendix A.

8. The entire collection of audio-cassfctLes <*nd computer discs is being

offered to public bodisr- and'or institutions for safe-keeping in suitable

archives, where ths material will remain available for perusal or study by

bona-fide researchers, stu de n ts or interested members of the public.

Rights to the reproduction or p ublication of any or all of the material in

the collection are s pe c ifically excluded from this offer, and will remain

subject to prior agreement between the holders of the a rchives and myself

or my agents.
