Dear Friends:

On April 17, 1960, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called Sunday at 11:00am “the most segregated hour in Christian America.” He was referring, of course, to two related phenomena: 1. Many “White” churches forbade Blacks from crossing their

thresholds – except, of course, in certain low-paying employment. King called that a “segregating” church. 2. Virtually all other churches, whatever the dominant race of their members, were not visibly integrated. King lamented that his own church remained “segregated,” despite not being “segregating.”

American Jews have long felt exempt from this issue, since virtually all Jews are white. Reform congregations were often among the first to welcome Black preachers as guest speakers, but the question of Black members or even regular attendees didn’t come up.

In 2017, most of my rabbinic colleagues serve congregations that are increasingly integrated in ways that few would have predicted a half century ago. Black Jews, who have their own congregations in places like New York, increasingly choose mainstream synagogues. Conversion, the evolution of marriage, and adoption have brought more than a few African Americans into Jewish communities – admittedly not in significant numbers here, yet. Still, when URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs talks about “Audacious Hospitality,” he’s not only talking about welcoming members of our families who aren’t Jewish or people who have chosen Judaism; URJ’s Vice-President of Audacious Hospitality is a woman of color.

Race isn’t the only way in which houses of worship are typically segregated. Most don’t include people of diverse income levels, like ours blessedly does. Also, across America, Republicans and Democrats don’t typically worship together. However, in synagogues, liberals and conservatives do coexist, generally peacefully, without one or the other breaking off to form their own congregation.

Political diversity, particularly in our increasingly divided country, requires a delicate balance, particularly in a house of worship with a great legacy of social justice advocacy, particularly in a congregation that upholds freedom of the pulpit.

When I give a sermon on a social justice topic, I have an awesome responsibility. It includes:

1. Grounding my sermon in Torah. I’m not a pundit; I’m a rabbi.

2. Diversifying my sermon topics. While the ancient prophets often lifted their voices to decry injustice, they also spoke about issues of faith and religious practice, among others. So must I.

3. Responding respectfully to dissenting opinions. From time to time, I’ll receive negative feedback from a congregant who disagreed with a sermon or found it inappropriate. I’m always grateful to receive thoughtful responses directly. I try to respond thoughtfully and respectfully, even when we continue to disagree. (Feedback to the President is also appropriate, though I can’t respond if it’s confidential.)

Our members, Lucy Towbin and Deanna Arrants, have planned an activity for Sunday morning, May 7, when congregants of all political stripes will have an opportunity to come together to discuss important issues. We will hear from distinguished speakers, pro and con, about the school millage election scheduled for May 9. We will then have an opportunity to review material on various sides of an array of issues, and write postcards to our elected representatives, each of us true to our own beliefs and philosophies.

Being a politically diverse congregation can be challenging, but it sure beats segregation.

Faithfully,

What Do We Mean When We Say, “God Gave the Torah at Mount Sinai?”

• Explore the evolution of Reform Jewish thought from the 19th Century to the 21st

• What authority rests in a Torah written by pious Jews, not dictated by God?

• Do our beliefs and our words match?

Join Rabbi Block to explore these issues and more at Tikkun Layl Shavuot, the traditional late night study session for Shavuot, when we celebrate God’s gift of Torah.

President's Message THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE MAY 2017VOLUME 17 ISSUE 4 PAGE 3

Dear Friends,

Some of us believe in God. Some of us don’t. Some of us love the newest prayer book. Some of us were perfectly happy with the older rendition and don’t like the newfangled version. Some of us like “spirituality” – whatever that means to us. Some of us think “spirituality” is a dangerous abdication of the rational intellectual process. Some of us love gefilte fish. Others…well, not so much. Some of us are “liberal”, some “conservative”, and some “moderate”.

Yes, we are different and often passionate about our various beliefs. One of the great things about being president of this congregation is that I get to hear from all sides. You may think I say that tongue-in-cheek, and there are those moments! However, I have learned the great value of listening to all voices and considering all points of view. There is wisdom in each one but the greatest wisdom is in the whole. “These AND those are the words of the living God” (Talmud, Eruvin 13B).

One thing that unites our community above all else is the commitment of our members to the support of robust Jewish life in Little Rock, Arkansas. The month of May brings us a Bat Mitzvah, a Bar Mitzvah, a Shabbat With the Stars and dinner in appreciation of our Religious School teachers, Torah Study, a conversion ceremony, a Shabbat service in honor of our Armed Forces, two weddings, Confirmation, and Shavuot, and that is not even everything! There is a place for you at Congregation B’nai Israel. Come and join us. We need you.

Shalom,

Carmen ArickShare your thoughts and ideas with me at [email protected]

Potluck dinner: Please bring something delicious.

A fun and festive romantic comedy about a Jewish family struggling to come to terms with their son's not-so-Jewish boyfriend. This Long Island couple's world is turned upside down when their son comes out at a family celebration. To tell you any more than that would spoil it, but let's just say that the film explores wide-ranging themes of secrecy, understanding, and redemption. The all-star cast includes the always fabulous Lainie Kazan, Saul Rubinek, Vincent Pastore, John Lloyd Young, Jai Rodriguez, Bruce Vilanch, and even Carmen Electra!

Legacy Society Earns $5,000 Incentive Grant

Marianne Tettlebaum, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Arkansas, has announced that Congregation B’nai Israel will receive a $5,000 incentive grant from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. Four Jewish institutions in Arkansas qualified for a stipend by enrolling at least 18 legacy commitments during the past 12 months.

In addition to our congregation, Congregation House of Israel in Hot Springs, Temple Shalom of Northwest Arkansas and the Jewish Federation of Arkansas reached or exceeded the 18 commitments needed to secure a $5,000 incentive grant this year.

The Federation’s Life & Legacy project is funded for two years, so we will be eligible for an additional grant if we are able to enroll an additional 18 legacy donors before February 28, 2018. The Congregation B’nai Israel Legacy Society has received 31 legacy commitments since it was established in 2016 to commemorate the congregation’s 150th anniversary.

If you would like to know more about the Congregation B’nai Israel Legacy Society, please leave your name and contact information with the Temple office and a Legacy Society volunteer will contact you.

With much love and great pridewe invite you to share this special day

Announcements THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE MAY 2017VOLUME 17 ISSUE 4 PAGE 9

Miriam’s Seder was a wonderful celebration of women for women by women! The service spoke to me more this year than last year just as each Passover Seder brings new meaning to my life every year. Many thanks go to Muriel Lederman, Meg Marion, Debby Brady, Eileen Hamilton, Liz Downs and Ellyn Polsky for all their contributions to make this year’s Seder meaningful. Arkansas Women’s Outreach, which aims to promote the well-being of local homeless women through bridging the gap with access to adequate health services and education, was the recipient of our tzedakah funds. For more information regarding this local organization, please see www.arkansaswomensoutreach.org.

I would like to thank all Sisterhood volunteers, especially Helen Kaiser, Jill Bauman, Esther Gordon, Debbie Brady, Becky Marks, Ellyn Polsky, Tracie Spivey, Madelon Scallet and Kathy Bauman for helping make our booth a successful venture at the JFAR Food festival.

For those who are not aware, Sisterhood has decided to use a flowering plant on the Bimah for Friday night services on the nights we do not have a sponsor for flowers. Our plant is nice but it is young. With tender care, I am sure it will grow and flower for us to enjoy. However, for those who prefer to see flowers, please feel free to step up and sponsor flowers in honor of special people and occasions in your life or JUST BECAUSE. To order flowers, please contact Liz at our Temple office. We will have a cutoff date so we can plan for ABOUT VASE to know when to deliver flowers.

We will be voting on new officers this month for the upcoming year. We encourage all women to step up and help us be the Sisterhood that works for you.

The WRJ Southwest Schmooze newsletter may be found at www.wrj.org/southwest. Please be sure to check out this column to find out more Sisterhood news.

I love this one song I learned when my kids were young called each of us is a

flower, growing in God’s garden. It is not a well-known song by any means, but it’s

cute and cheerful. I am rem

inded of this song all the time when I see the physical

growth of the Ati’D

e I met m

any of them in the fall to now,

they are growing up and reaching the sky like healthy and radiant flowers. Their petals have opened up to all their new lessons from

this year, and their stems bend

towards weekly pleasures like celebrating Shabbat. Planting the seeds early to teach diversity and understanding is what m

akes the world a better place. Many of

the students are not Jewish, but connect beautifully to the Jewish values and holidays through their daily activities. Three and four year olds know H

Religious School THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE MAY 2017VOLUME 17 ISSUE 4 PAGE 10

May has always been a big month for my family. Both my sons were born in May, so in 1997 and 1999, I missed the last days of religious school. My mother’s birthday is also in May and often falls on Mother’s Day – so her birthday presents in 1997 and 1999 were delivered on time. This May she turns 80 – and there is no better time to celebrate her. On May 22, PJ graduates from high school, and of course this May, Todd finishes his freshman year of college. Whew. Alas, we will finish religious school a week earlier on May 7th when we celebrate all our students for a great year.

And me? I have spent this past academic year getting to know all of you. A lot has transpired since our Jew-lympic opening day of religious school in August – and we have successfully celebrated each holiday as they came along. Our students enjoyed and were comfortable getting used to our new religious school additions – JFood and JGames, and were always willing to give everything a try. Our teachers participated in new and innovative ways of transmitting the ISJL Curriculum, and there is no end to that creative growth for the future. Along the way we shared stories of Jewish values, lessons from Torah, and sang some old favorites and learned a few new tunes too. I am very impressed with the interest all our students take in their Jewish learning. This translates back to you – their parents – who make sure they are here and reinforce the lessons at home.

This May, we will have our final Shabbat Kids Club dinner and program on May 26th and before we know it, those young families will be part of religious school too. Last, but certainly not least, Confirmation is May 30 (Shavuot) where we celebrate and honor those students who are ending their formal studies in religious school. I have not worried about them for the future, as many are Madrichim in our school, some are attending Jewish summer programs, and most are seen as part of the LaFTY scene. Again, so impressive. I am just grateful that most of the students will still be around and will participate fully in Temple life.

There is a lot to celebrate in May. Beginnings and endings; teachers and religious school. Please join us on the Red Carpet to honor teachers on May 12. There are many “stars” in our midst. Be sure to be part of this number and walk the red carpet of Shabbat of the Stars to celebrate a successful year of Jewish learning and community at B’nai Israel.

GratitudeCongregation B’nai Israel’s Director of Education and Youth Engagement is made possible by the dues and donations of each and every Temple member and by generous grants from the Ottenheimer Family Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Arkansas.

Ati'DayBy: Eileen Hamilton

I love this one song I learned when my kids were young called "Each of Us is a Flower, Growing in God’s Garden." It is not a well-known song by any means, but it’s cute and cheerful. I am reminded of this song all the time when I see the physical growth of the Ati’Day kids. From the time I met many of them in the fall to now, they are growing up and reaching the sky like healthy and radiant flowers. Their petals have opened up to all their new lessons from this year, and their stems bend towards weekly pleasures like celebrating Shabbat. Planting the seeds early to teach diversity and understanding is what makes the world a better place. Many of the students are not Jewish, but connect beautifully to the Jewish values and holidays through their daily activities. Three and four year olds know Hebrew words of body parts, colors, greetings and more. It’s amazing. They sing blessings over their food with comfort and pride numerous times a day.

All of the Ati’day students will continue to grow, and the younger students will slowly bloom into the older classes and this beautiful cycle of life and growth will continue. It is how a flower flourishes that makes all the difference. Let the sun shine on them, nourish them, and allow each child to grow into a part of the world’s garden.
