Fourth St. Alton, IL 62002 (618) 463-0585 www.marquettecatholic.org The Class of 2017 had a lot to celebrate at their graduation this year. The 109 students in the class received $7,668,794 in financial aid and scholarships to further their education. This amount averaged out to approximately $70,356 per student (if they were able to use everything they received). 109 students graduated, 108 will attend college and 1 student enlisted in the Navy. The class put in over 20,640 Community Service hours during their 4 years at Marquette and 14 students will continue to participate in sports at their colleges and universities while earning their degrees. We are proud of you Class of 2017! The Baccalaureate Mass was held on May 18, 2017 at St. Mary’s Church. Fr. Bill Kessler and several parish priests celebrated the Mass for the graduates and their parents. Dr. Woodiel led the Marquette chorus in beautiful music. The Seniors in the chorus performed special songs before the Mass. The graduation ceremony took place on May 19 at Hatheway Hall at Lewis and Clark Community College. This has become a beautiful tradition for our graduates and each graduate is showcased as they walk across the stage. Mr. Dennis Horn (Class of 1981) was the keynote speaker at graduation this year. Dennis is the Senior Merchandising Director for Sam’s Clubs in Bentonville, AR. He and his wife (Jenny Maher class of 1982) live in Rogers, AR with their 3 boys Jake, John and Adam. “It was really special that I was able to speak at the graduation since my great niece and nephew were in the graduating class” (Alex and Bryan Nagy), Dennis said. In his speech, Dennis told the audience that he was very surprised when he got the call from Mr. Slaughter. He said he considered himself an unlikely candidate and did not think of himself as deserving of the honor of speaking to the graduates since he took a different path after high school than many of his friends. But what he stressed was that hard work can really pay off. He said “You don’t have to take the same path as everyone else. Believe in yourself, take risks and you never know where it will take you.” Dennis also told the graduates to be “students of life.” He told them to listen more than they speak, to find their own voices and to speak up when something seemed wrong. “Go out and write your own story. Be bold and be brave and don’t forget to take risks” he said. Many thanks to Dennis for his inspiring words for the class of 2017!

Dear Alumni/ae, friends, and supporters of Marquette:

Happy Birthday Marquette Catholic High School. Did any of you notice that Marquette turned 90 this past year. Unless my math is wrong, we just graduated our 90th class this past May. Congratulations to them as they join approximately 9000 previous graduates and become alumni/ae.

So, what has happened to Marquette in the past 90 years?

Well, the 1927 building (the original building) is still highly functional and very much updated to 21st century standards. But you will still get a nostalgic feeling as you walk in through the front doors.

If you graduated before 1956, we added a gym. That 1956 gym has been given new windows, a new floor, new bleachers, and air conditioning. It was also repainted and a big new scoreboard was mounted on the wall.

In 1982, we added a new wing on the back fronting 3rd street. Today, that wing houses 4 modern classrooms and a media center where you will also find our computer lab.

Just recently, we did away with the outdoor courtyard across from the gym and replaced it with what we call the Commons, new restrooms, and a new Athletic Directors office.

In 1970 the old building out back which housed science classes, etc., was torn down. Graduates before 1970 are always asking about that old building. It must have had quite an impact (good or bad?) on many of you. At least alumni always laugh when they talk about it.

If you are an alumnus from before the 1970’s you basically only had Ursulines as your teachers with a few laypersons thrown in here and there (Lowell Brosamer, Jadwiga Cooke, Ron Holtman, Joe Vitale, John Rogers to name a few). Between the ‘70’s and 90’s it was about half and half Ursulines and laypersons. After the 1990’s to today we are predominantly laypersons but we do have one priest and two sisters from the order of St.Francis of the Martyr St. George currently on staff and I am always looking to add more religious.

As I mentioned in a previous Graduate, we are still hoping to build a STEM lab either on campus or just off campus but only time and money will tell that story.

If you are ever in the area, stop by for a tour. Encourage your classmates to have their reunion here! You’ll love it.

From the President

Dear Marquette Alumni,

It is an exciting time to be a member of the Marquette family. I say that, not as an alumni, but as a parent of a future alumni (although my mother, Irene (Chiolero), class of ‘48, was an alumnus). My wife, Grace, and I have decided to entrust our precious child to Marquette primarily because of the excellent learning environment, created by the faculty, administration, Marquette families, and you, the supportive

alumni. Throughout my association with Marquette, as a board member, parent, and now as President of the school board, I have been overwhelmed by the commitment of all of you who support Marquette’s progress to excellence.

I am happy to report that Marquette is currently in excellent condition through the efforts of the administration, faculty, staff, and the previous Board of Directors. Enrollment has been stable at approximately 420 students. Accounting and fund raising policies and procedures have been modified to reflect a more professional methodology. The outward and visible manifestation of our shared faith has been enhanced through the presence of an on campus chapel and the appointment of Father Bill Kessler as our chaplain. The Five Year Strategic Plan (available on the website) is being carried out with enthusiasm by the administration and Board.

Marquette, in recent years, has embraced modern technological advances in education by placing handheld devices (iPads) in the hands of each student, by increasing its reliance on digital textbooks and by encouraging the use of interactive technologies in the classroom. We are continuing to expand our technology based curriculum by expanding our course offerings in computer science and by employing a fulltime information technology manager on site.

We are in the process of exploring an exciting new project tentatively scheduled for the 2018 school year. The Board of Directors and the Administration have decided to enhance MCHS commitment to providing our students with excellent educational opportunities in math, science, technology and engineering by creating a new STEM center with modern equipment and infrastructure. The MCHS STEM center will be intended to house three newly equipped labs for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with four additional classrooms for math and technology courses. The Marquette family is hopeful that you will be energized by its commitment to the future and participate in this worthy and much needed expansion.

It is my hope that the students’ successes you have read about in this newsletter and the focus on the future of the Marquette Administration and Board of Directors, will provide you with confidence that your beloved Marquette has a bright future and will continue to produce successful, faithful and committed members of this community for years to come. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are looking forward to working with you and for you for the continued success of our beloved Marquette.

God Bless, Sam MorminoPresident of the MCHS School Board
