what does your work / studio space look like?

my studio space is what you'd call a dumping ground, there's an old piano, surfboard, tins of house paint and loads of boxes filled with unwanted toys. there are however essentials such as a huge 3 metre length table for laying and cutting fabric, my trusty sewing machines and my ever faithful t-shirt carousel for screen printing. messy or clean, it still is my favourite room.

M A B E Lby Dave Boyer

mabel designer dave boyer began his creative

process with some dirty old ply and acrylic,

a handheld drill and an upside-down floor

sander. while that might not appeal to some,

this refreshingly organic/nitty gritty approach,

combined with a sincere and ethical design

process and some interesting aesthetical

influences has resulted in a range of jewels that

are totally original and supremely cool. featuring

stacked layers of timber pared with fun pops

of coloured acrylic, mabel wares are a perfect

example of good australian design…an awesome

product with a feel good ethos behind it.

Possibly the cutest wares we’ve ever come

across, little snoring products turn us all into

panda loving, simpering sillies. while her

homewares and clothing are super fun and

gorgeously made, it is her tiny pocket pandas

that really hit a nerve. edwina designs all her

products with a good dose of whimsy and a

fearless approach to colour.

favourite tasmanian designer / maker + why?

tasmania has so many fantastic designers and makers; i had to really think about this one. some of them i respect for the products, some of them i admire for their intentions, and many others are gorgeous, amazing people! i would have to say Pixe Link would be favourite. i have several of her garments in my wardrobe, she is a wonderful lady with bravery and passion to support other makers and designers in tasmania by opening her own store, spacebar Gallery, and she is a self taught designer, business woman and general wonder-lady!

what does your work / studio space look like?

my workshop was lost to the fires that swept through murdunna in January this year. i didn’t realize how much cutlery i had collected over the years until i saw it in piles amongst the remains and the ashes.

i am now reinventing my creative space in a big 40 foot shipping container.

my vision for this space is chic workshop and design studio with jewelers bench and lots of beautiful old and new tools, surrounded by inspiring objects and treasures. i think the operative word here is ‘big’ – something big has happened, we’re taking that, thinking big and rising up.

the market is carefully curated by shannon Robertson & holly webber, who are committed in their mission to unearthing and showing off tasmania’s veritable web of undiscovered talent, world-class products and the intriguing stories and inspiration behind the commercial reality of small scale designers and makers.

alongside co-curating the market, holly & shannon both run successful small businesses of their own and bring to the market their skills in graphic design, journalism, advertising, creative writing and marketing. this helps them to provide exhibitors with a platform, valuable exposure and a reach for their products that extends beyond market day.

shannon Robertson is the whimsical designer behind the fashion accessories label, whatever heather.

launched in the summer of 2008 whatever heather is a confident, fiercely pretty label full of the eclectic and the intriguing, and well known for its decidedly quirky outlook and daintily dishevelled aesthetic.

shannon produces bespoke seasonal ranges for stockists nation – wide, and a coveted heather forever collection, available from her online shop.

whatever heather is created from her attic studio in battery Point, which is overflowing with all manner of shannon type inspiration...oversized flowers, swans, chandeliers, battered crowns, and sometimes (if he fancies) her imperious but seriously beloved ginger cat Raspberry can be found perched on her desk, playing muse.

alongside these creative pursuits, shannon also works in an old fashioned antique shop on hobart’s waterfront.

holly webber is a freelance graphic designer and art director. a graduate of the university of tasmania with a bachelor of fine arts (Graphic design and Photography - 2004), she has spent the past eight years building up her design practice, delivering creative solutions for clients on a state and national level.

alongside this, under her self-titled label, holly has developed a range of handmade products, which draw on her design and photographic abilities. these works can be found in retail boutiques and online stores both locally and nationally.

holly is a keen supporter of the graphic design and advertising industry, volunteering her time as the current elected state President of the australian Graphic design association (aGda).

she loves all things 'clean and green' and is currently also studying to become a health coach...for something a bit different!

Demand to know where things

come from, what is in them,

who has made them and under

what conditions.

Do not be led only by price but

look for value and craftsmanship.

Buy only things and materials that

respect the human energy that

has gone into them and where

the maker is rewarded fairly.
