multi-faceted organization which has “many faces,” including:

The mission of the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center

In a world in which our daily news reflects

violence, fear, distrust and loss — both locally

and globally — it is not surprising that the

Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center is called

upon more and more to assist people with life

transitions and mental health needs.

The good news is that the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center has been providing hope and healing for more than 42 years — and 2014 was no exception! The Center remains committed to helping people find strength and meaning in their lives. We assist people of all ages to build brighter tomorrows. In 2014 we broadened and expanded our services to better meet the ever-increasing and ever-changing needs of the clients we serve. This included: • The addition of both a board-certified psychiatrist and psychiatric physician assistant. These new team members allow the Center to expand services to include medication prescriptive therapy in addition to counseling. • Training and credentialing in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples as well the addition of our first licensed family and marriage therapist. • Re-opening the Ankeny satellite office to enhance geographic access to persons in the northern part of our county. • Continuation of our partnership with the University of Iowa’s School of Social Work, providing practicum experience for U of I students. • New biofeedback programming. • Collaboration with healthcare provider UnityPoint to become a referring partner for the UnityPoint Accountable Care Organization. • Training and workshops in forgiveness, conflict resolution, trauma, and spiritual direction. • Growth in the Instititute for the Practive of Ministry in both number of participants and breadth of programs

Most impressive and important, however, is that we

provided counseling and assistance to 666 youth and

1,592 adults — more than 22,400 therapy sessions.

We wish to thank all of you for your support of the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center. Without your generous gifts of time, talent and treasure, 2014 would not have been filled with such remarkable growth and positive impact in the community. We are grateful and honored to provide hope and healing to so many in need — and we are grateful and honored to call you our friend.

With gratitude

Hope & Healing 2014 WOMEN HELPING WOMEN

A GREAT SUCCESS

Nearly 400 supporters and community leaders gathered at the Embassy Suites on Friday, May 16, 2014 for the 16th annual Women Helping Women luncheon. The event was extremely successful and broke previous fundraising records — more than $102,000 was raised to provide counseling services for underserved and uninsured women and girls. Women Helping Women 2014 honored Connie Wimer, owner and Chairman of Business Publications Corporation. Connie has been a steadfast supporter of women throughout her distinguished career as a successful business owner and visionary, respected community leader. The luncheon’s featured speaker was Sandy Hatfield Clubb, Drake University’s Athletic Director and first female athletic director of a Division 1 school in Iowa. Sandy spoke from the heart about “Finding the Light from Within”— her journey from adolescence when she nearly dropped out of high school to a successful career in university sports. Thank you to all who attended and supported the 2014 Women Helping Women event.

Hope & Healing 2014 FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS

THE GENEROSITY OF OUR FRIENDS: KAY RILEY

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Kay Riley is a woman who exemplifies this quote by Winston Churchill. Since she was a child growing up on a dairy farm in southwest Iowa, Kay was taught the importance of “giving back.” Kay remembers that her parents did not have much money, but they were very active in the community and gave generously of their time and talent. They modeled the Golden Rule for Kay and her brother, and demonstrated to her at an early age that blessings should be shared. Kay began donating to the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center more than seventeen years ago when she was pursuing a master’s degree in Christian Spirituality and took a course from Dr. Jeff Means, then a staff psychologist at DMPCC. Kay’s early support grew — as did her passion for the Center and its important programs. In 2008 Kay helped begin PrairieFire, one of the Center’s spiritual renewal programs that is still going strong today! Kay and her husband Bob, along with their children and now grandchildren, have developed a wonderful “giving” philosophy within their family. All six of their grandchildren put part of their allowance each week into a “philanthropy jar” and each child annually chooses which charities they wish to support. Kay states that she is motivated to continue giving to DMPCC because “I want anyone who needs the services of DMPCC to have the means to do so.” For that reason, Kay often gives her donations in support of the Women Helping Women initiative that funds counseling services for underserved and uninsured girls and women. Thank you, Kay!

Kay Riley and her husband Bob with four of their grandsons, Josh, Reece, Whit and Norman.

THE VISION OF OUR FOUNDER: RAY MARTIN

REV. DR. RAY MARTIN 1930 – 2014

Ray Martin, the founding director of DMPCC died on July 2, 2014. Ray was a person who “made life happen.” He did not wait for life to evolve, but shaped it the way he believed it should be. Ray had a strong sense of what was right and just, even traveling to Selma, Alabama to participate in the civil rights march — and a brief stint in jail! In 1972, while associate pastor at First United Methodist Church, Ray initiated the idea of a spiritually-sensitive counseling ministry. He and a board of directors developed the vision, incorporated it into a nonprofit community-based organization, and created the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center. Because Dr. Martin pursued his vision and fostered widespread enthusiasm for it, more than 60,000 lives have been touched over more than 42 years. The sense of mission that Ray envisioned in 1972 continues today. He has left a remarkable legacy and we will be forever grateful.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR LEADERSHOP

All nonprofit organizations rely on the capable, skilled leadership of a volunteer

Board of Directors. The Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center is no exception.

It is with sincere gratitude and a bit of sadness that we bid farewell to the following

Board members who “retired” at the end of 2014.

ANNE KELLY

As a practicing nurse, Anne brought a caring sensitivity to the Center’s mission and an understanding of the complex healthcare arena. As Board President the past two years, she oversaw significant growth in staff and creation of a new strategic plan.

GREG NICHOLS Greg joined the Board when the Center’s new facility was still a dream. During his tenure as Board President the capital campaign was successfully completed and the new building built and dedicated.

RUSS OLSON Russ’ experience and expertise in finance and banking were invaluable to the Center. He helped cut facility expenses, enlarge cash reserves, simplify procedures — and enhance the Center’s financial stability!

LEANN STUBBS LeAnn brought a pastor’s understanding to the work of the Center and her leadership has been a steady reminder of the Center’s roots and its mission to serve all.

Thank you Anne, Greg, Russ and LeAnn.

We are grateful to you for your exemplary service and leadership.

“Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to a new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom and make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. Some people stay in our lives a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.” FLAVIA WEEDN

GRACE SHERER CO-FOUNDER OF COOL (CHILDREN OVERCOMING OBSTACLES IN LIFE)

Grace joined DMPCC in 1999 as one of the first child psychologists and helped develop and name the children’s department now known as COOL — Children Overcoming Obstacles in Life. COOL flourished under Grace’s leadership, vision, and positive energy. Children and families looked forward to their sessions because they knew they would experience safety, comfort, and a certain level of joy and healing during each visit. Healing and growth sometimes require thinking outside of the box — and maybe a little bending of the rules! This was Grace’s specialty. Whether it was encouraging a child to throw paint at an office wall with the hopes they would experience a release of emotion, rolling them up in a beanbag to help them cope with their sensory needs, or sitting quietly with a child as they used art or play to express their inner feelings, Grace knew what was needed to help the hearts of children begin to heal and learn to fly again. We already miss Grace’s positive energy and joyful spirit, but we wish her the very best as she takes the next step in her life journey.
