SOHINI DAS

Mumbai, 8 June

Drug sales in the domestic marketcontinue to be impacted, withthe pandemic showing no signs

of slowing down. Chronic therapies suchas cardiac and anti-diabetics saw mar-ginal growth in May, indicating the slow-down may be more deep-rooted.

Market research firm AIOCD AWACShas predicted zero growth in the domes-tic market this financial year. Medicinesare essentials, and sales hardly see anyimpact even during an economic slow-down. However, the outbreak has hitfresh prescription. This has, in turn, dampened sales. Overall pharma marketgrowth was down 8.9 per cent in May.

Anti-diabetic and cardiac medicinesare part of chronic therapy taken bypatients regularly, because of which saleshardly decline. In May, according to datafrom AIOCD AWACS, cardiac drugs reg-istered growth of 3.9 per cent (against 5.9per cent in April), with anti-diabeticsposting growth of just 1.1 per cent (com-pared to 6.4 per cent in April).

While the world is experiencing a res-piratory virus outbreak, sales of respira-tory medicines (comprising inhalers, among others) clocked a decline in salesduring May — falling 5.9 per cent againsta marginal 0.3 per cent dip in April.

The category, therefore, continuedits downward trend. Ameesh Masurekar,

director of AIOCD AWACS, feels peoplehave taken precautions because of Covid.“People have stayed indoors due to thelockdown, which has reduced asthmaepisodes. Seasonal cough and cold infec-tions have also been significantly less,” headded. Other therapies such as anti-infectives (-20.8 per cent), gastrointesti-nal (-12.8 per cent), vitamins (-9.1 percent), and pain and analgesics (-17.2 percent) also continued to decline.

AIOCD AWACS said: “The Covid cri-sis has impacted the IPM (Indian phar-maceutical market), which continued toshow negative growth in May. Whilethere was evidence of revival in sometherapies, the (overall) IPM continued anegative growth trend at 8.9 per cent in

May,” said the firm. He added that inFY21, IPM growth would be zero — pricegrowth would remain constant at 5 percent — while volumes and new intro-duction growth would be in negative ter-rain (-5 per cent), subsequently pullingdown overall growth.

Masurekar explained that both thecardiac and diabetic segments saw pan-ic buying in March and early April. Oncethe panic-buying wave weaned off, salessaw a sharp fall. In June, the industryexpects some revival in sales of chronicmedicines. On the inventory front, Maysaw the gap between chronic and acutetherapies being bridged. Usual invento-ry at the month-end is 40-45 days.Chronic inventory at April-end was

around 20 days, and above 60 for acutetherapies. By May-end, this changed to30 days for chronic and 50 for acute.

Edelweiss said volumes declined by14.4 per cent in May, while prices grew 4.3per cent. New introductions (new brandsmostly) rose a meagre 1.3 per cent. Mostfirms have chosen to launch drugsthrough online webinars. Firms likeLupin have said the crisis does notchange their new product launch plans. In an earlier interaction with BusinessStandard, CEO Vinita Gupta had saidthat visits by medical representatives toclinics could normalise by July.

Overall industry growth has beenslow in the March-May period — the IPMgrowing slowly at just 3.6 per cent.

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

New Delhi, 8 Jun

After dominating the conver-sations for weeks, coronavirusseems to be falling off the pop-ularity charts as netizens in thecountry went back to search-ing for topics like films and

weather on Google in May.According to Google search

trends, the search volume forcoronavirus in May was half ofthat in April even though thenumber of Covid-19 cases have continued to rise in thecountry.

‘Coronavirus’ dropped to

12th most searched topic over-all during May, behind topicslike Film, Meaning, News andWeather.

All these terms are consis-tently highly searched topicsin India. This probably indi-cates that people are tryingto return back to consump-

tion patterns seen in the pre-Covid times.

An exception was cricket. With no tournaments beingorganised in wake of the pan-demic, coronavirus was "fivetimes more searched thancricket", showed the trends. The top trending search term

overall for May was 'Lockdown4.0', followed by 'Eid Mubarak'.

Netizens also soughtanswers to questions like"Which disease is related tocoronavirus?", "Can asympto-matic people spread coron-avirus?" and "Will lockdownextend after 17 May?".

Corona-related Google searches in India see drop in May

BP Plc plans to cut 10,000jobs as the coronavirus pan-demic accelerates the com-pany’s move to slim downfor energy transition.

The public health crisishas hit company earningsand forced many to changethe way they operate.

European competitorRoyal Dutch Shell Plc is saidto be offering voluntaryredundancies in a bid tobecome leaner, and US rivalsChevron and Marathon Oilare among others laying offemployees.

BP will let go of 14 per centof its workforce, Chief Exe-cutive Officer BernardLooney said in an internalnote. The move will mostlyaffect staff in office-basedjobs and those holding sen-ior roles, with the top 400positions expected to be cutby one-third.

Senior management willalso not receive pay increas-es this year, while junior andmid-ranking staff will onlyget them from October.Employees at filling stationswon’t be included in thereorganization as they’reconsidered front-line work-ers. Their wages rose in Apriland will climb again inAugust. BLOOMBERG

A merger of drugmakers As-traZeneca and Gilead Scien-ces is unlikely, said analysts, after reports said the UK firmmade a preliminary approachto its US peer last month.

Political opposition fromboth the UK and the US couldderail any attempt at a deal, especially given the backdropof the Covid-19 outbreak,Citigroup said.

“US government wouldlikely try to block any acquisi-tion of a major US biopharmacompany that is involved inpandemic therapeutic devel-opment. Even greater politi-cal opposition is seen from theUK government,” wroteCitigroup analyst AndrewBaum. The timing is alsoquestionable, as while Gileadis in the middle of a turnaro-und, AstraZeneca is wellpositioned and has a strongpipeline, analysts said.

Yet there is potential forsynergies, and Gilead couldcompliment AstraZeneca’sportfolio in the areas of virol-ogy and inflammatory treat-ment, according to RBC. PTI

Former prime minister andJD(S) patriarch HD DeveGowda, who had on multipleoccasions declared he wouldnot contest any election, onMonday changed his mindand decided to contest theJune 19 Rajya Sabha pollsfrom Karnataka. He will befiling his nominations onTuesday, his son and formerCM HD Kumaraswamy said.

He said his father took thedecision to once more contestfollowing a request made byCongress President SoniaGandhi, several nationalleaders and party legislators.

HDK tweeted: “Thanks toSri Deve Gowda for agreeingto everyone’s consensus. From the people, formerprime minister Deve Gowdahas seen successes and de-feats. By the people, he hasacquired higher positions. Itwas not an easy task to per-suade DeveGowda to enterthe RS fray,” he said.

The JD(S), which has 34seats in the assembly, is notin a position to win a seat in

Rajya Sabha on its own. Butin a tactical move, the Con-gress decided to give its sur-plus votes to the former PM.The BJP, which too has sur-plus votes, decided not to putup a third candidate, makinghis victory easy.

If he wins, this will be thesecond Rajya Sabha entry for87-year-old Gowda, the firsttime being in 1996 as PM.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha poll,Gowda was defeated in Tu-makuru constituency byBJP’s GS Basavaraj by over13,000 votes.BJP fileds Kadadi, Gasti Meanwhile, the BJP sprang asurprise by confirming thenames of Eranna Kadadi andAshok Gasti as the party’snominees for the two RajyaSabha seats. The announce-ment shocked senior leadersas several prominent front-runners were sidelined topave way for second-rungleaders within the party.

Eranna Kadadi, 55, who be-gan his political career in1989, has strong roots in theRSS and worked his way upthe BJP ladder.

Ashok Gasti, 55, hails fromRaichur and also camethrough the ranks in the BJPafter a stint with the ABVP.

The Congress has fieldedveteran leader and a formerleader of the opposition inthe 16th Lok SabhaMallikarjun Kharge, who onMonday filed his nomina-tion as the party’s candidatefor the June 19 Rajya Sabhapolls from Karnataka.

THREE-DAY DARSHAN REHEARSALBEGINS AT TIRUPATI HILL SHRINE

TIRUPATI: Ahead of allowing devotees’ entry from June 11 after a nearly80-day-long lockdown ban, a 3-day trial run of darshan began at LordVenkateswara temple at Tirumala on Monday with staff and othersattached to it following strict protective measures. 6,000 employees werepermitted into the over 2000- year-old hill temple complex shrine withtime slot free darshan, a temple official told PTI.
