So, with this issue closes our two years of beingresponsible for your magazine. It has been fun.Our staff, for the most part, those who had servedbefore—-were very cooperative and worked hard.They deserve a lot of credit.

Financially, your magazine has climbed slowlyupwards toward getting out of debt. It is in the bestcondition in the past five years. Most of the "new"arrangements were a matter of actual practice be-fore. Such a magazine will always need enthusi-astic member-club support and use. The dance re-prints have been the Federation's chief source of in-come. The business end of the magazine should behandled (as intended) through the Federation office.Each Council, holding Festivals and other specialevents, should not only boost sales and subscriptionsbut secure advertising in advance. It can be done—witness Fresno, Salinas, Oakland, Stockton andothers.

We feel confidence in our new staff—they are es-sentially experienced dancers. Your new editor, BobChevalier, and business manager, Bill Sorensen, havea broad background. The Research Committee set-upis a healthy, long-advocated system to secure a suffi-cient quantity of useful dances accurately described.The future, however, is yours—you, the reader, mustbuild your own magazine.

As the "old man" retires there come many ex-pressions of kindly interest and appreciation. Tothese we give our hearty "Thanks. It has been fun."To the questions—-what now?—we answer,- "Catchup on some reading; teach those Institutes we post-poned; more chance to dance; an opportunity tocomplete plans for a dance study group to tourEurope—-already now four years in correspondenceand planning; write a little and—-perhaps—sleep' alittle more! •— and, of course, our old loves •—• theStockton Polk-Y-Dots and the Folk Dance Camp."

So "retirement" is merely a transition in our timeallotment to other items—we will still be seeing youand dancing with you quite often.

This issue of Let's Dance! concludes,for Editor Lawton Harris two years ofservice to the Folk Dance Federation ofCalifornia. This is undoubtedly one ofthe most difficult assignments within ourFederation structure. Serving, as it does,a very broad range of personalities, eachintensely interested in folk dancing ashis or her recreational hobby, presentsno small problem to an editor, whomust serve them all. It has been saidthat many an otherwise mild personal-ity becomes a considerably different per-son when the subject of his hobby is in-volved. The magnitude of this assign-ment is, without a doubt, not fully ap-preciated.

dancing have now come to Ireland and re-ceived a royal reception. Long a land oflaughter and gaiety, doing their own ceili andstep dances-with such joy and heartiness, theynow have been introduced to the Americanstjuares and international folk dances and areliterally "lapping them up."

Miss Una Kennedy, the little Irish lass whospent almost two years in the United States,and who was adopted wholeheartedly by thefolk dancers there, particularly in California,returned to Ireland last March, and since thattime she has been the busy little beaver,spreading the contagious "folk dance disease"which seems to invade every country in theworld when the opportunity arises. Miss JoKennedy, an American girl who spent sometime in Ireland, started a group there, andjust about the time Una returned to Ireland,Jo returned to the states, so Una took over.

The group known as the Marian Arts Soci-ety Dance Group is now doing Americansquares and many of the favorite internationaldances of the California groups. Repeatingthe familiar pattern, the enthusiasm of this

Greetings of the season to each and all ofyou. This is the time of the year when all goodlittle folk dancers begin to wonder what theholidays have in store for them and what thecoming year may bring. As for the first, I cantell you that the SANTA MONICA FOLKDANCERS have a whiz-bang festival plannedfor the second Sunday of this month and Iknow several other clubs have special holidayparties scheduled. Another possible item couldbe a subscription to Let's Dance! That wouldbe a real nice gift to find in one's stockingcome Christmas morn, wouldn't it? Got anygood friends you'd like to surprise? "It's moreblessed to give than to receive."

The WHITTIER CO-OP has moved to newquarters, a real nice location, not too far fromthe old locale. However, folks have been goingto Bailey Gym for so long, doubtless for sometime to come they'll be turning up there be-fore suddenly realizing the change. Old habitsare hard to break, you know.

Reports just in from FRESNO, via thoselucky ones who made it up there, say it wasfun all the time, and the hospitality of theFresnans was grand as ever. Sounds like aprelude of good things to come when the State-wide Festival meets there, eh?

Opening night of the San Francisco Operahere found several of our music-minded folkdancers attending, but they were not all in theaudience, no sir! From up north, we findCARLOS CARVAJAL behind the footlights,too!

Then INTERNATIONAL HOUSE in BoyleHeights was another extra-curricular meetingplace of our dancers. Many were seen prowl-ing around the grounds on the Columbus Dayweek-end, examining costumes, partaking ofwierd conglomerations of edibles (good, too),and watching others dance for a change. Andit is to be noted also that each year, more andmore of the local folk dancers are participatingas representatives of some country or otherwhich does not have an ethnic dance grouphere.

The new officers of the WESTWOOD FOLKDANCERS include DAPHNE UPTON, pres-ident; BOB GOODDING, treasurer and'Veep''; PHYLLIS BLOOM, secretary;DVORA KIRSCH, director of publicity. This,ever-bustling group has on tap, as I writethis, a "kick-off party" to promote Let'sDance!, a week-end party at UPLAND on acamp trip, and a "Sweetheart's Festival" inFebruary, In addition, WESLEY PRICE con-ducts an up-and-coming beginners' group eachThursday before the regular dance starts. Andtheir folk songfests each month are lots andlots of fun, as they bring one much closer toanother form of the folk arts.

The VERDUGO FOLK DANCERS sent intheir new list of officers, who are RAYEUSTON, president, and a supporting castof JERRY HARLAN, SUSAN HENRY, BILLALDWELL and ELSA MILLER. They reallyenjoy their regular third Friday pot-luck sup-pers at Glenoaks Park in BURBANK, too.This club is one of the very few which possessa special insignia and emblem. It is quite aneat little job, in case you haven't already

seen it. (Their colors too were used as the ,decorative theme at the IDYLLWILD festivallast autumn.)

After the discovery of the Mayflower Ball-room in Inglewood while ANTA RYMAN washere in August, folk dancers took to wander-ing down that way, and on the occasion of aspecial fair and carnival, many romped homewith prizes from the games and raffles held.The group from the L. A. CO-OP was reallylucky, though, for they copped the top prizeof a big torn turkey, plus other items. Yes,for good Swedish dancing, it is a place to go.

The GANDY DANCERS and I. D. C. havebeen rehearsing like mad. lately for dances fora documentary color movie—trouble is, everytime everybody gets together, dancers, camera-men, producers, etc., the sun won't cooper-ate! Talk about a cold war! They took timeoff, though, to go to the wedding of EUNICEULLMAN and LINWOOD BRANCH, afterwhich a reception Was held in the RedwoodRoom of the Hollywood Roosevelt, hot dig-gety dog! TERPSICHOREANS and GLEN-DALE FOLK DANCERS also attended ingreat abundance.

The MERRILLS are back home again inEL CAJON after a long trip of over threemonths up the Pacific Coast. They tell methat VANCOUVER, B. C., is rapidly becom-ing dance conscious, and their visit there wasmutually enjoyable. As a small family or-chestra, playing various folk songs and dances,interesting exchanges were made, and theyfelt well rewarded with the material theygathered along the way.

The SANTA MONICA F9LK DANCERSagain, and this time to mention their promo-tions around this area. Three junior-size fes-tivals, one at their home base in Lincoln Park;another to introduce the citizens of TOPANGAto the art of folk dancing, and a third held inBEVERLY HILLS, all during the last twomonths. SID PIERRE, who is the mainstaybehind all these things, reports also that thebeginners' classes just, concluded were mostsuccessful; average of 45 or more every night.Says too that AUDREY MARCUS is back inthe fold after a summer layoff.

I didn't manage to get to the festival held inDUARTE at -Swiss Park in September, hut'from all I've heard, it was most interesting-—•a new location as you may know. However, Idid see BERENDO FOLK DANCE CO-OP'sfirst essay iiUo festival hosting, and they out-did themselves. Some very fine decorations inthe Glendale Auditorium. The program of 40dances was lengthened when time was foundfor requests, and included some of thoselearned up at camp in Stockton. Exhibitiongroups included the EIRE 4-PB.OVINCECLUB, the LITHUANIAN FOLK DANCEGROUP and the host club itself, all in color-ful costumes. Which reminds me, costumesare becoming more prevalent in our southlandfestivals nowadays, which is a good thing—itcreates much greater public interest!

So with a conclusion in which I again wishyou the best of season's greetings, I'll signoff for now.

LETTER FROM MILDRED BUHLERWe arrived here on August 27, after a most

enjoyable trip, and have been living here atthe hotel ever since. It took me about a monthto find a residence for us, and we have beenpatiently waiting since that time while it isbeing completely repainted and refurnished.

Housing is very difficult to find here in Lon-don, and I was quite discouraged at first, butnow feel we should be quite comfortable inthis place, for it is a modern flat on the ninthfloor overlooking the park. There are four bed-rooms, living room, entrance hall, dining room,kitchen, three and a half baths, and a nicebalcony onto which five of the rooms open andwhich is large enough to accommodate someporch furniture, and where we could eat ordance when the weather permits. It is a cornerflat so it gets plenty of air and sun (when thereis sun) and since it is the top flat you go upone story to a pleasant roof garden which ispartially glass enclosed.

We think we will like it there for it is withinten minutes bus travel of Freddie's school andJake's West End office, and just a twenty-minute ride by Underground to his main officedown in the heart of the city. Lynn is attend-ing an English finishing school which she canreach in about 15 minutes from the flat, andso we feel well located at last; that is, we willfeel that way once we are moved, which shouldbe in about two more weeks. There is also agarage there for our car, and that is unusualin this city without garages. Our car at presentis housed about a 15-minute walk from ourhotel

We are finding our life here intensely in-teresting and enjoyable in every way. Jake isfinding that his work is most challenging duenot only to the difference in methods of con-ducting business in general and banking inparticular, but his work is so fascinating forhe deals with people from all over the world,and each day brings surprises that whet hisappetite for work. I find a million and onethings to interest me here in this city of pag-eantry teeming with the pomp and circum-stance of centuries past and present. The color-ful traditions that are such an important partof England, and London in .particular, utterlyfascinate me, and I am just loving it. Thereis so much, in fact everything, to be enjoyedhere in the field of drama, theater, opera,ballet, concert, etc. Heretofore I have been sobusy with other things and then, too, we havenever had opportunities to explore these thingslike we are having now, and we are all eatingit up, to say the least.

Because of the bank's part in the film indus-try here we are invited to many premieres andthey are certainly elaborately done up. Wewere guests of United Artists at the premiereof "Limelight," and also their guests at a partyafterwards, which was held at the Savoy Hotel,and at which Mi. Chaplin was the honoredguest. We also attended the Royal Film Per-formance at which the Queen, the Duke ofEdinburgh and Princess Margaret were allpresent. Princess Margaret and a small group"f. friends were occupying the Royal Box at

Limelight," and our seats were just a littleay from the Royal Box so we saw the granditrance, etc. It was very impressive, for each

time that royalty is in attendance, they give itthe full treatment. The preparations that goon are absolutely amazing and they decoratethe theater so lavishly you could never believethat this country is experiencing such financialhardships. Somebody has to pay for those thou-sands of blooms, and all of the decor. Thestage, the aisles, the ledges of the balconies,the stairways, the foyer and the vestibule wereall simply massed with flowers, and each timethe square and the surrounding streets weremassed with people, thousands and thousandsof them, waiting to see the members of theRoyal Family and the celebrities.

Tuesday was the opening of Parliament, andthe children and I went down to watch theparade. It is a short procession, from Buck-ingham Palace to the Parliament Buildings,perhaps the distance of a mile or a mile anda half, but that area again was simply a massof people. We were fortunate in our positionout in front of the Palace, and we saw theprocession leave, and return some 45 minuteslater. The Queen looked so radiant and lovely,as well as Philip, as they rode by in the IrishState Coach. Other notables were in other statecoaches, with their footmen and- attendants,etc. They were preceded by the Queen's LifeGuards in their shining breastplates and crim-son coats, on horseback. I can't take the timeto describe all the splendor that is displayedat these ceremonies, but I always feel asthough I am attending some magnificent play,and that I shall soon leave the theater. It isso unreal to me, and yet so fascinating, forit all reads like a fairy-tale. Next Monday isthe Lord Mayor's show when the new LordMayor of London assumes his new duties.There is to be a parade, etc., with much pompand traditional ceremony, centuries old, and itis one of the state functions worthy of note.

We find London's museums, libraries andart galleries an endless chain of things to visitand enjoy. And we have visited several of thepalaces and castles, each with a special attrac-tion of its own, and all of them fascinating.But one of the things that we have enjoyedmost is the trips through, the countryside, withits quaint and charming villages that appear

- not to have changed for centuries. How lovelythey are! Every opportunity we get we go into •the country and we have enjoyed those excur-sions more than mere words can imply. Allduring the late September and most of Octoberthe trees and shrubs had donned their fallraiment, and I could not feast my eyes enoughon those brilliant reds, oranges and yellows soprevalent everywhere. To stand in the court-yard at 900-year-old Windsor and to look outover the surrounding countryside at the peace-ful and beautiful world, which stretches be-fore you for miles, was a privilege and apleasure I shall long remember. To haveluncheon at a centuries old inn, which over-looks the Thames, and there in the quiet soli-tude to watch the lazy swans as they ply upand down the river along with a few pleasurecraft, and to wonder at the easy life theseBritons apparently move in, and which afterall is the very essence of their existence, makesone stop and think a bit, and wonder if weAmericans do not try to live to fast a life, atleast some of us anyway.

I know you want to know what and whereI have been in connection with the dancing.I have gone a little slowly in that connection,for I wanted to get my bearings, but thingsare beginning to take shape. I have been outto Cecil Sharp house several times, and amgetting acquainted with their staff. Mr. andMrs. Kennedy have been most gracious andkind, and at one of their parties the other eve-ning they asked me to call, and I felt he wasalmost afraid to ask me for fear it would notplease the crowd, but I made it simple andeasy, and the crowd was most enthusiastic,and certainly most appreciative. I am lookingforward to joining in their classes as soon asI get settled in the flat, probably by the firstof the year. I feel there is a great deal to belearned there, and I certainly intend to availmyself of the opportunity. I have joined thesociety as a full-fledged member, and now Ijust have to get into the many activities theyhave.

When I arrived here in London there wasa letter of welcome awaiting me from the Lon-don International Folk Dance Society, andshortly after I arrived the secretary of thatorganization called me and I invited her outto dinner and we had a grand visit. Since thenI have visited their group, really it was theirmonthly party, and I also went to a perform-ance at the Royal Albert Hall which was givenas part of the United Nations Week celebra-tion, and in which they (London I. F. D.)were taking a prominent part. (Albert Hall isa huge concert hall where they have many fineaffairs of every description, opera, concerts,recitals, symphonies, etc.) This program wasquite good, and there were many ethnic groupsalso participating, some of which had traveledfrom the continent. It reminded me of some ofthe many affairs we have had at home, andI certainly felt a little homesick about thattime, but, may I say, in utter simplicity andwith no intent to brag, and not for publication,we have nothing to be ashamed of in Cali-fornia, and we should certainly be proud ofour efforts. (The only thing that worries meis that constant bickering, which I am soafraid will be our un-doing. We have such awealth of good material in California, andsuch a wonderful set-up, I don't think any ofus there realize how fine it really is, but some-thing is creeping into it that has an ugly flavorand I am more than a little concerned. Thetrue spirit of fellowship and the willingnessto share with our fellow man must surely bestronger than this villain, gre_ed, and I amsure that the right people will continue toguide the movement, and keep it on an evenkeel.)

I have the names of the leaders in the RoyalScottish F. D. Society, and intend to contactthem soon for we do want to get started withthe Highland as well as the Scottish CountryDancing. I have attended one old time Englishballroom dance, and it was lovely. Everyonewas costumed just so, and their dancing wasbeautiful, and I was so happy to note that weknew at least one-third of the danc.es, and dothem precisely as they do them here, especiallythe things that Lucile had taught us. Old-timedancing is apparently very common and very

popular, and I have the names of some sup-posedly good schools where we can get goodinstruction. I also have the names of recordshops that are supposed to have good mate-rial; however, I put off visiting them until weare in the flat, and no longer living out ofsuitcases. No need to clutter up our hotelrooms more, and until our things come out ofstorage I could not play the records anyway.

At all of the folk and square dance eventswe have visited they were using "live music,"and it was very good. It was a surprise to findsuch good square dance music. The squaredancing is coming along, but of course it hasnot reached the California level, and yet theyare loving it. Competitions seem to be commonand important to them.

Several of the square dance callers havecontacted me, and I have been to one straightAmerican square dance party, and also haveattended the Happy Hoedown Broadcast atBBC. Two or three callers asked me to godown, and the producer also called me andinvited me so I went down to see how it ishandled. The caller-producer, David Miller,has asked me to appear on the program in acouple of weeks, and they also told me theyare planning a party for us in December, whenall of the London callers will be invited. Theyhave all been extremely friendly and mostgracious, and are doing everything they pos-sibly can to make the whole family feel athome and very welcome. They seem to be veryeager to have help with the squares, and ourAmerican dances, and I have told them I willhe glad to help in any way that I can, but Ido not want to get involved with a lot of classeswhere I will have to follow a set routine allthe time. Everywhere I have gone I have calledfor them, at their request, and they have ap-peared so pleased about it, that it makes mewant to help them in any way that I can. Theyhave few records, few instruction books, andhave had very little contact with Americanteachers and callers, from what they tell me,so they are most anxious to have, and verygrateful for, any help that we give them.

I also attended Ireland's first AmericanSquare Dance Jamboree (that's what theycalled it) and was a guest of the Kennedyfamily for several days and had a wonderfultime. (See article on another page.) I havealso agreed to take over the dancing classesat the American School which Freddie is at-tending. There are only about 100 childrenenrolled at the school, and the parents arevery anxious to have the children have folkand square dancing, so I agreed to go overonce a week and give all the children a lesson.I can do it in about four hours or so, and Iam grateful that I can make that contribution.It will keep me from getting too rusty and too-stiff.

Yesterday we (Anta Ryman and I) attendedthe Third International Square Dance Festivalin Chicago. This was indeed a spectacle andan n]]-r]ay one at that.

The Dunsings (Paul and Gretel) and wearrived at the amphitheatre at about 9:30 a.m.and already the dancing had begun in the mainarena. This is a tremendous room about thesize of the Civic Auditorium in San Franciscoand then on the second floor on the two sidesare two more very large rooms. These latterwere decorated with balloons of all colors whilethe main arena was decorated with flags ofall nations. They arranged the callers so that

My stand on recorded calls seems strangefor one who has been doing considerable call-ing for a number of years. However, in theschool field with a few exceptions and in someother situations I have felt for the last fiveyears since records have improved in qualityand quantity (giving choice) that recordedcalls considering all angles are the best bet.

Your average classrom teacher in gradeschool has to be a "Jack of all trades." He orshe has to know something about a lot ofthings and does not have time to perfect hisor her calling to a point where they are reallyfairly good and can hold the pupil's interest.

Anta found a nice tall Swedish man to dancewith and really had a wonderful time dancingevery dance. I had several partners. They weregood dancers and all from different states.That was one of the interesting things aboutthis festival, meeting people from so many dif-ferent states. I found that on the whole theydance pretty much the same except that inthe Chicago area the head couple faces themusic instead of having the back to the musicas they do everywhere else. In deference to thevisitors it was changed so that the head couplehad their backs to the music and we reallyran into no difficulty. Also in the Chicago areaas in no other place quite a few people prom-enade with the Varsouvienne hold. Outside ofthese two things I saw no difference, but thenI am not what you might call an expert. I dolike it though, and enjoyed every minute of it.The one thing that bothered me, though, wasthat they did not have enough round dances.However, in Ed Gilmore's beginners, or almostbeginners, groups he gave them mixers andround dancing.

Ed Gilmore, to my way of thinking, is awonderful man. He does not approve of mixingsquares and folk, he said, as he is a Shawfollower, but I thought his talk on AMERI-CAN FOLK was wonderful and his philosophyof the dance is just what we leaders in North-ern California advocate. His talk was aboutcomfortable dancing and the spirit of dancing,which he says are the two most importantthings in dancing. His program is made upof 20 per cent tricky new material to satisfythose who always want something new, 60 percent nice comfortable dances that are easy forevery one to do, and 20 per cent of the dancesthat are old, tried and true dances and sosimple that everyone can do them. It is impor-tant to please everyone and since that is amammoth task when some of the people maydance several nights a week and some onlyone, be feels that this proportion comes thenearest to satisfying everyone. 'He also saidthat the best callers were the local callers, theones who stayed at home. The traveling callersjust try to help these people and that is their

On the other hand, you have on records (you are a little choosey) some of the bestcallers in the country with calling that theyhave perfected through years of experienceand work. Just from this angle alone you cansee how much easier it would be to sell squaredancing to youngsters if they are listening tosomeone who is on the beat with a clear voiceand "leading" the dancers by just the rightnumber of beats. The sureness of the com-mands—the extra excitement at certain points—these and other things are in the recordedcalls (remember I said to be a little chooseyin selecting records). In either case, however,they need some knowledge of fundamentalsfor teaching.

In the average school you will usually finda poor mike for calling, trouble in hearing themusic to get the beat and key, amplifiers thatare probably not too good, etc., all of whichwould hurt your calling. With recorded callsyou have most of these difficulties taken careof and a fairly good phonograph handles thesituation. Also you are free to use the mike,if available, to help the dancers at difficultpoints with helpful comments and instructionstossed in above the caller's voice. You are alsofree to move from set to set while they aredancing. Many good teachers will get rightinto square dancing and do a fine job with re-corded calls while they are afraid even to tryto call, so the program suffers. A teacher withjust a little background in square dancing cando a creditable job with records but would bebadly handicapped by this lack of knowledgeif trying to call.

We have, however, teachers in high schooland junior college who handle a lot of danceclasses and grade school teachers who handlea number of classes in physical education eachday. It could be somewhat different in thecase of these physical education teachers call-ing at least one period a day. A good num-ber of these will eventually do a very credit-able job. However, for anyone calling only aperiod or two a week it would require morepreparation than they could spare and 20 to30 minutes a week for dancing and instruc-tion would not give much calling experience.

Most leaders or instructors of folk dancegroups who use square dances only as one ofa great many national dances likewise do nothave the time to perfect their calling to a de-gree that they can compete with the fine re-corded calls now available. The enjoyment ofthe group is the important thing and a goodstrong instructor in fundamentals can givehis or her groups a lot of pleasure with re-corded calls. I do not include in this group anumber of fine callers who teach folk dancingone night and call the next or who give theirfolk dance groups a good deal of square danc-ing and thus gain experience.

One of the things not to be overlooked whenusing recorded calls is an adjustable speedphonograph so as to slow the dance downwhile they are learning it. They seem awfulfast just at first and will discourage the group.The same old dances should not be repeatedand repeated but increasingly more complexand interesting dances should be given as theuse of only old dances on records where thepattern does not change at all can kill theinterest. A mixture of the two is fine. Ade-quate dancing space and fairly good acoustics^of course are essential for success in either!type of calling.

Un the Dancer's Bookshelf may now beplaced the last four volumes in the concludingseries of twenty-four Handbooks of EuropeanNational Dances, published under the auspicesof the Royal Academy of Dancing and theLing Physical Education Association. All ofthese handbooks have been reviewed in thiscolumn as they have come fresh from thepress, and it is gratifying to this reveiwer thatshe can complete this series with the culmi-nation of a three-year term of office as editorof this section of Let's Dance!

This series, which covers twenty-two coun-tries, with three books on France and two onSpain, has made a definite contribution ' topublished materials on the folk dance and re-lated folk arts, in an attractive and readily-acquired form.

The organization followed by the books isvery commendable. Each volume contains amap of the region under consideration, historical and environmental backgrounds, out-standing traditions and festival occasionscelebrated by the inclusion of dancing. Col-ored costume plates, which also show dancepositions and gestures, a detailed descriptionof four typical dances with their musical ac-companiments, a bibliography, and other perti-nent material complete each well-roundedsurvey.

Dances of France, III, The Pyrenees. By Vio-let Alford. New York: Crown Publishers,1952. 40 pp. $1.00.Violet Alford, the author of this book and

editor of the series, is a recognized authorityon the traditional dance and knows the Pyre-nees from extensive research in and out ofthe country.

As stated in the introduction, there is aPyrenean type overruling regional types indance and customs in this area. Even herethere are distinct differences with a Mediter-ranean influence shown in the eastern end ofthe Pyrenees, an Atlantic influence in thewest, with the Spanish-Catalan style in danceand music seen to the east and the Spanish-Basque traditions to the west. Some of thesedifferences are discussed in considerable de-tail..

The four dances described with their musi-cal accompaniment are: Bail De La Courre, alively dance from Roussillon; Bourree Arie-geoise, a quick, agile couple dance, fromAriege; La Castagne, which traditionally fol-lows the Bourree Ariegeoise when performed:and Era Pelha ded Gat (The Cat's Skin) fromBigorre in the high Pyrenees. The latter dancewas formerly a witches' dance, which in re-cent times has changed into competition to de-termine who can perform ihe Kjlby or Cos-sack squatting step for the longest length oftime.

of the many folk dancers who enjoy the Polishdance. The four dances described in detail,measure by measure, are Krakowiak, Mazur,Goralski (a brigand dance from the moun-tains), and the Oberek. The patterns are quitesimple, which is not always the case in theseexciting dances. Basic steps, arm gestures, andholds are clearly described and costume platesin color, typical of each dance, are given.

Interesting background material on thedances locates them geographically and his-torically.

being an editor of a literary monthly, pub-lished in London, and the founder of theInternational Arts Guild. Carola Grindea is anaccomplished pianist. Their extensive knowl-edge of the Roumanian folk dance is reflectedin their book.

The four typical dances chosen for presenta-tion in detail, complete with music and stepnotation, are the energetic and popular Sarba,danced chiefly by men; the dignified BanulMaracine, popular in Moldavia, Wallachia,Oltenia, and Dobrudja; and the gay Invartita,introduced from Transylvania and the Banat.The colored costume plates given for eachdance also indicate dance positions and hand-grips.

The handbook material is especially inte-resting, as these dances are rich in ancientpeasant customs and traditions.

The handbook is a valuable addition to thelimited available publications written in Eng-lish dealing with the dances of Rumania.

Dances of Yugoslavia. By Ljubica and Dau-ica Jankovic. New York: Crown Publishers,A Chanticleer Edition, 1952. 40 pp. $1.00.The authors of this handbook are Serbian by

birth and have a thorough knowledge of thefolk dances of Yugoslavia, acquired throughextensive travel, collecting folk 'dances fromall parts of the country. Ljubica Jankovicis a curator of the famous EthnographicalMuseum in Belgrade and her sister, DanicaJankovic, is a librarian in the UniversityLibrary of that same city.

The rich variety found in the dance, music,and costume of Yugoslavia is derived frommany influences coming from her diversenational frontiers and ancient traditions with-in her borders. The most general dance formis that of the Kolo, and we are told that it is"sometimes danced without music to the soundof jingling coins and the thud of the feet."The historical, political, and social conditionswhich have affected the dance are discussedfor each region. These include Macedonia,Montenegro, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Croatia,Slovenia, Serbia.

The four dances described in detail withmusic accompaniment are: Zupcanka, an openKolo, from Serbia; Zetsko Kolo from Monte-negro and Hercegovina, danced as a ClosedKolo or two Closed Kolos; Tri Mlinara (TheThree Millers), a lively Closed Kolo fromCroatia and Lake Lisa; an Open Kolo fromMacedonia. The full-page, color costumeplates given for each region from which thedance derives are especially fine.

An interesting bibliography is included,and a film, Dances of the Peoples of Yugo-slavia, is listed with information regardingits procurement.

first Irish group, located in Dublin, is spread-ing the good work, and soon all over Irelandpeople will be swinging and do-si-doing to theIrish-accented American calls.

They invited me to be the guest caller attheir first American Jamboree on September26, which was held in Dublin, and what a galasuccess it was! Una, with the help of theMarian Arts Society Dance Group, plannedthe evening, and she also served as emcee.Highly publicized in the Irish newspapers,the event, which really resembled our Cali-fornia folk dance festivals more than ourCalifornia square dance jamborees, drew acapacity crowd which far surpassed the com-mittee's anticipation, and by the enthusiasmthat was shown all through the evening, andfor days following, I feel sure that Una will bemore than busy in the months to come. Hergroup presented several demonstrations dur-ing the evening, which gave added interest.Curious bystanders could no longer resist, andthe floor was crowded with new recruits allthrough the evening. Una's eighteen-year-oldbrother, Declan, is developing into a goodcaller, and I feel sure we will hear more ofhim as time goes on.

The Irish people, noted for their friendli-ness, gave this poor foreigner a very heartywelcome, and I shall always treasure mymemories of that visit to the Emerald Isle.The Kennedy family lives on a hill which over-looks both Dublin and Killiney Bays, in alarge home that was built six years beforegold was discovered in California. The fiveboys and three girls who keep that householdin a constant state of joy and laughter werecertainly a pleasure to meet, as well as Una'sparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Kennedy. Theirthoughtfulness and consideration were sogreatly appreciated, and their friendship wasreflected in their many dancing friends whocombined their efforts to make my stay inIreland a most enjoyable one.

JAGERQUADR/LLEHunter Quadrille—(German)

This dance originated in the Ammerland in northern Germany. There is little doubt that the word "Qua-drille" was added to it much later just to be in keeping with the practice of the time to use French nomenclature.The dance is not a square and was originally called 'Tagerneuner" or Hunter's Nine. The folklorist Erich Janietzassumes the word "Jager" (hunter) was put to it because of the hunt motive in the music. He thinks it is en-tirely possible that the dance symbolism stems from old pagan customs; the ending figure of "Tower and Hedge"suggests this strongly.

Permission to print this dance has been graciously given by Paul and Gretel Dunsing, who presented it atFolk Dance Camp in Stockton in 1952. It is published in German Folk Dances, Vol. I, by Paul Dunsing.

important function. Callers should not try tokeep up with the mad scramble but to mix alittle of the new with the old.

Ed Gilmore said that he was going to -writean article for Jack McKay, for Let's Dance!

I had a nice talk with Herb Greggerson andenjoyed his calling. He came to a folk danceparty given by Paul and Gretel Dunsing thenext day at Kelvyn Park for visitors and wedanced the Zillertaler. He got along fine andit was great fun.

I also introduced myself to Al Brundage. Hecan certainly control and teach a tremendousgroup of people with great ease and they alllove him.

The dancing continued all morning andafternoon and in the side halls in the eveningwhile they g_ave the exhibitions or whatever youcall them in the main arena. I sat in thehighest balcony so could see everything andonly three numbers impressed me. The firstwas the Chicago Park groups. They coveredthe entire floor and their squares were in per-fect lines and the dancing all done togetherso it was a beautiful sight, especially whenthey did right and left through across the hall.The entrance and exit were wonderful too asone solid mass entered from one end in thecenter and the others entered from the side.The singing of the Star Spangled Banner wasa thrilling thing too, with the perfectly tre-mendous American Flag at the end and thesoloist singing with a clear booming voice thatsimply filled the hall.

The next number by the St. Louis group(see picture) was by far the best and mostspectacular number, but simply done. All thegirls were in old-fashioned dresses of whitewith little brilliants on them, the men in whiteshirts and black ties and black pants. Theremust have been about 40 of them and theydid all round and folk dances, and very simpleones. I congratulated one of them later andsaid it looked more like California than any-thing I had seen and she said that their leaderhad been to California to our May Festivaland was so impressed that she came - homeand designed their dresses and created theirroutine.

Another that impressed me was the SquareDance Association of Wisconsin with their six-pointed star figure.

The end of the evening was quite a sight,for the floor was- solid with dancers and thename callers took turns calling. It was plainto see that no one wanted to go home and Ithink it was all a tremendous success.

LETTER FROM VERA HOIAEUFFERPeg's article on the Square Dance Show

Boat jarred me into writing you the letter I've. been going to send you about our folk dance

contacts on our vacation. We saw the ShowBoat in Victoria, B. C., on the one night weand they were here. We arrived in Victoria,found a motel, got some maps and informationabout daily events, and saw that there would ",he "Dancing on the Green" that night, in one 'of the parks. We found the place, watched abaseball game and wondered if we were in theright place. Finally spotted a gal in a longdress, so I asked her if she knew anything 'about this Dancing on the Green. Togetherwe found the tennis courts where the dancingwas to be held, and got a most enthusiasticwelcome from Marjorie Erb Robbins, a formerGateswinger (the last we heard of her she was '

in England). When the Show Boat people ar-rived, whom should we see with surprise anddelight but Bob and Ginger Osgood, who weretraveling with them. This Show Boat ideaseems wonderful—a trip by water through thisbeautiful country (nothing I want more in theworld than to own an island and a boat in theSan Juans!) and meeting with dancers fromall the Western States. The Show Boat Dancersput on a short exhibition, then danced withthe people in the crowd. Chief recollectionsare Holly swinging some little English lady intrue Gateswinger fashion (and she was havinga wonderful time) and the enthusiasm of thecrowd doing,"Gie Gordons."

We camped for a week on Orcas Island inthe San Juans, and by chance (our son wasbuying fishing tackle and one of the girls hap-pened to say something about dancing whichled the girl in the store to invite us to asquare dance that night) found a very nicegroup which danced at Doc Harbor, a resorton Orcas Island. There were two. squares—•such nice people—no caller, so they dancedentirely to records, and they didn't even haveone record without calls. They were good, andbelieve me, they knew all the latest calls.

The INSTALLATION DINNER DANCE ofthe REDWOOD CITY DOCEY DOE CLUBwas a beautiful party. First big party sinceMildred Buhler left for London, England.A cable from Mildred and Jake congratu-lated the club on the selection of officers—GEORGE TAYLOR is president; SAMSCHLIFF, vice-president; ORPHA WACH-TER, secretary, and GEORGE WALSH,treasurer. Jack McKay and Peg Allmondwere guest callers of the evening. VIRGILMORTON is the new dance director of thegroup.

That hard-working group of Universitywomen, the P.E.O.'s, held their HalloweenParty at the Lakeshore Plaza. The party wastopped off with a demonstration of squaredancing by the entire Square Cutter Club, withJack McKay doing the calling. After thedemonstration each Square Cutter took a part-ner from the audience and there was masssquare dancing—and lots of fun for all.

Reports on PAPPY SHAW'S CONDITIONare all good. Adrienne Murton sent in the lastone. She talked with Dorothy Shaw on hertrip east.

The two-day institute of the Square DanceCallers Association of Northern California waswell attended. Jones Gulch at La Honda wasthe scene. More than sixty members attended.There were callers' sessions, round dance sosions and square dance sessions. Contra dance,too, came in for special time. President JayBalch and his pretty taw, Jan, were pleasedwith the enthuisasm of the dancers and par-ticipants in the various "bull sessions." TheAsociation holds three of these two-day insti-tutes each year, and every caller should affordhimself the experience of at least one such.

: is rich in material, fun, and friendship.Dan and Madelaine Allen attended the Saniego Fiesta de la Cuadrilla and had a won-

derful time. The Fiesta was sponsored by theSan Diego Square Dance Association and theCity Park and Recreation Department.. Out-standing among the many exhibitions was onecalled by "Buzz" Brown (whom you will re-member as "Buster"—of Fresno.) Top callersfrom Southern California, as well as goodcallers from three states, kept the squaredance ball a-rolling and the Aliens felt thatit was well worth the trip.

International Amphitheatre, Chicago, wasthe scene of the third Annual InternationalSquare Dance Festival. This festival was spon-sored by the Prairie Farmer-W.L.S. RadioStation, the Chicago Park District, and theChicago Area Callers' Association. The ses-sions included institutes for callers, for danc-ers, and for teachers. Some were highly tech-nical and some were strictly for fun. Therewere loads of exhibitions and special events.Some of the stars on the program from thesquare dance field were Al Brundage, Ed Gil-more and Herb Greggerson. Since the distanceis so great between east and west it would bewonderful if the progress could be repeatedon the west coast. Wonder why some enter-prising square dance callers or dancers' asso-ciation doesn't get on the beam and bring itto us?

More than twenty squares turned out forthe appearance of ARNIE KRONENBERGERof West Los Angeles, a caller par excellence.The evening of dancing was sponsored by JimMork's Western Whirlers and held in thehigh school at San Leandro. Arnie has apleasant personality that projects itself intothe mike and out on the floor to the dancers—making you feel he is right in there dancingwith you. It was a very pleasant evening.

PARTY NOTE. Something-to-add-to-your-idea file — Class Re-union Night. The pro-gram was mimeographed on a large card, 5x8.The dances were divided into four sections—FRESHMEN, SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR ANDSENIOR—with an M.C. under each one. AllM.C.'s wore square mortar board hats (andthe senior M.C. wore a full dress suit withtails!). The post graduate M.C. took the miketo handle REQUESTS. The back of the cardwas left blank, with the heading "Class Signa-tures and Friends," and everyone went aroundcollecting autographs. Behind the platformwhere the music was located there was a largescroll listing the names of "students" who hadgraduated from the group and had classes oftheir own. I am sure there are many wayssuch a party can be made attractive. Giveyour program committee the idea and let meknow how they improve on this party. We havethe San Francisco Folk Dance Carrousel tothank for this idea. Squares were called byFrank Tyrrell, Carmen and Al Doran and JackMcKay.

Brasstown, North Carolina, reveal many inter-esting handcrafts and other projects carriedon there in the folk tradition. Carving, weav-ing, metal work, basketry, pottery and othercrafts are featured along with folk singing,folk dancing and industrial training. The newdirector, Georg Bidstrup, is a product of theDanish folk schools and features Danish danc-ing. With their previous book now out ofprint, they have released two new ones andexpect to have records soon for some of them.Short term classes and seasonal exhibits arefeatured several times during the year. Margie and I have been again invited tolead some 1500-1600 teen-agers in a folk andsquare dance party at the Long Beach Mu-nicipal Auditorium Friday evening, November28th. This is the fourth year that we havebeen involved in the annual President's Ballof the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Repre-sentatives come variously from Southern Cali-fornia, Arizona and Nevada. It's quite an affairand an excellent opportunity to spread in-terest in folk and square dancing. (Eo. NOTE:Vera Holleuffer led a similar party for theMethodist youth in Northern California Oc-tober 25th in the Oakland Civic Auditorium.All reports say BIG, both in crowd and FUN.)

A good crowd . . . lots of enthusiasm; the pro-gram committee members are beaming hap-pily at one another . . . and the next item onthe program . . . SQUARES!

The floor is packed, the visiting caller isintroduced, and everyone is rarin' to go. SlimLeatherlungs steps to the mike, smiles, andsays, "Let's Walk This One Through. . . ."

About five minutes later, a tired, disinterest-ed crowd is ready to do the "Wrong WaySashay and Half Double Duek". . . and Slimcan't understand why they're not enthused.They cheered when he stepped up on stage. . . and he's avoided giving them all the staleold figures everyone is tired of. "What wentwrong?" he wonders.

Slim has forgotten . . . or overlooked ... avery basic fact. Dancers go to a party todance. They don't mind a 30-second walkthrough; it helps everyone. They don't minda one-minute walk through . . . very much.But after that, Slim is just making himselfunwelcome. His tricky little call would havebeen wonderful at a high-level squares partyor at his advanced class . . . anyplace where

groups. Some of the callers are beginning toinclude it at least once on each program. Thedancers are taking to it enthusiastically. Agroup of the callers are forming a workshopin Contra Dansing to meet on the second Sun-day afternoon of each month. I'm doing rather nicely. I was elevated toclass 5 (4 more to go) and I've even beenelected veep of the Patients' Council. Thethrill of this particular election is the factthat the chief doctor thought my health isimproved enough for such an activity. He israther strict and does not permit any activityto a patient, no matter how easy it may seem,if he thinks the patient's health does not war-rant. It is on this account that I'm as happywith the vice-presidency as I would have beenwith a discharge from this place. And this,too, will come soon, I hope. Meanwhile, staywell.

The Folk Dance Camp office now has threefilms of Scottish dances which may be rentedfor $5 each (for an entire week). They areblack and white and show the complete dances

they specialize in squares. But slim has ig-nored the likes and dislikes . . . the abilitiesof his audience. And Slim has made, one ofthe most common of callers' mistakes today.

There's no such think as a "stale old fig-ure." Use your imagination . . . a little win-dow dressing . . . a slight change in wording. . . something easy, but unexpected . . . andthe oldest of dances becomes something brightand new. Give them a walk through . . . butonly on the parts of the square that are new. . . involved . . . or (heaven forbid!) notdirectional.. Our most popular callers are theones who don't consider themselves "above"calling Bird in the Cage . . . Sally Goodin . . .Dip 'n' Dive . . .and the other old standbys.The dancers like to swing their partners . . -let 'em do it! If we don't . . . we're going towalk them through . . . and walk them through. . . until the dancers start sitting out squares. . . stop inviting guest callers . . . and startdragging out that good old album of dustyrecords with calls ori them. Nice familiarcalls. Nice "stale" old figures that they canhave FUN dancing. Use your judgment . . .call for fun . . . and let's stop walking themto death!

The closing month of the year is one fortaking stock in folk dancing goals as well asothers. Locally, the Fresno Folk Dance Coun-cil now at the end of its fourth year has ac-complished-much and is pushing on to moreand better things. The valley regional council•—San Joaquin Dance Council—recently elect-ed HAL HOLMES of -Bakersfield presidentand DOROTHY WORLING, also of Bakers-field, secretary. One of the objectives of thiscouncil is to foster institutes and it did abang-up job on last Thanksgiving weekendwith a two-day institute with GRACE PERRY-MAN as the folk dance teacher. Squares-weretaught by BOB OSGOOD and this portion ofthe institute was sponsored by the CentralCalifornia Callers' Association.

The Central California Callers also electedtheir new set of officers for the coming yearas follows: FRANCIS MONNIER of Selma,president; CARL FOSTER of Mendota, vice-president; BILL RICHARDSON of Fresno,secretary; and TOM WRIGHT of Fresno,treasurer.

Last month Eleanor McMullau's notes ofher visit to Puerto Rico for the CaribbeanFestival gave us a glimpse of what the restof the world is doing to further the folk danc-ing movement. There is so much to say andof interest to so many that here are more ofher impressions of what was really the year'shighlight in the preservation of folklore:

The folklore of the Caribbean area is in-fluenced by that of England, Spain, Denmark,Holland, France, Africa, Java and other placesbut—in the words of Mr..WALDEMAR LEE,executive director of the Caribbean Festival—"it has a distinct West Indian flavor, whichis the only real point of contact because thekaleidoscopic combination engendered in eachisland is different and unique."

Last month Eleanor's account of Trinidad'scontribution to the festival emphasized theversatile and talented young Negro, GEOF-FREY HOLDER, and his group. However,Geoffrey-—while delving for his inspiration inthe folk dances and songs of his native land—has created a new dance movement and is es-sentially expressing the folklore of his peoplein his own individualistic manner. However, theLITTLE CARIB THEATRE of Trinidad, ledby PERCY BORDE, closely adhered to theoriginal folklore in their music and dances.Rich in tradition and folklore, Trinidad is thehome of the Calypso singers and the steelbands, and from there they have migrated tothe other West Indian islands.

Calypso singers from several localitiescharmed the audiences with their musical ac-counts of the contemporary life of the WestIndies. Real troubadours, they tell in theirsongs the loves and hates, the dreams and as-pirations of the people, and have even beenknown to ruin political careers. The steel bandfrom Antigua, one of the largest and most im-portant of the British-West Indies, is describedby Eleanor as quite a musical phenomenon.Originated because the drums were banned,the principal instruments are made from theends of steel oil drums or in some cases gar-bage cans. They are played with-small sticksand give a variety of trebles, altos and tenors.

The Netherlands West Indies were repre-sented by Curacao and Aruba in a show whichfeatured the Bula Waya, a native dance. 0:particular interest to folk dancers is the fac1

sary to dig into the old traditions and the olddances which had almost disappeared and

^which now have been revived and stand achance of survival.

From Surinam, formerly known as DutchGuiana, came MISS VALIES singing from herlarge repertoire of the songs of the BushNegroes, some of whom have never seen anelectric light, an automobile or a radio.

Martinique's and Guadeloupe's contributionto the festival charmed Eleanor completely.Belonging to the French West Indies, thesetwo islands featured beautiful women's cos-tumes with skirts of rich fabric tucked at thewaist to display elaborately embroidered petti-coats, with gold jewelry and the picturesquemadras, an attractive headdress made from ascarf. Their dances included the waltz, ma-zurka and polka with the distinct flavor ofthese islands, the Bel Air which is of Africanorigin, and the famed beguine.

The American Virgin Islands contributedthe jig music, which with its crude homemadeinstruments has remained almost identical inpattern with the original jig music of Eng-land and Ireland. The jig dancers of St. Croixwere intriguing to watch, enacting in theirdances their own interpretation of the Shake-spearian prose, the legends of King Arthur'sCourt, and other wealth of material which istheir heritage from England and in keepingwith their historical background as favoritestopping places of many a buccaneer.

Eleanor's summary of the Caribbean Festi-val was that it was indeed a cross section ofthe culture of many countries and a delightto folklore lovers.
